I agree. I have tired all kinds and I think it tastes nasty.

Beer always smells like equine sweet feed gone rancid to me. . . I even tried a Guiness in Dublin (supposedly it is "better" at the mothership) - blech.

AlphaFrog 12-05-2007 09:05 AM

I will admit that it took me a little bit to get used to beer...and I still don't like anything really strong (or really weak, for that matter - Miller/Bud Lite=nasty)...and I'd rather drink a seasonal brew then a regular beer.

Beryana 12-05-2007 11:18 AM

Peppers - even the littlest piece causes me to taste it for a week! Didn't taste good the first time either
Ranch anything - makes me gag and just tastes nasty
coffee - I'm a tea person but even that I'm picky about
sushi
vegetables that my mother cooks - she likes to cook things until they are dead (vegetables, meat, etc)
alfredo sauce
White Chocolate
Most canned vegetables (corn is okay)
pears
refried beans
sour cream
fake cheese (canned, slices, melted, etc)

Ew...mine too. And she puts enough salt and pepper on there for a year's worth of veggies. When I make veggies, I either microwave them covered in water until barely hot, or when I'm at work, I just add hot water from the coffee machine instahot and let them sit.

nikki1920 12-05-2007 12:25 PM

The ONLY beer I'll drink is Hornsby's. It doesn't have that nasty beer after taste...

Well, since I don't like olives, I don't like them on deviled eggs. But I know plenty of people who will put a slice of olive on the "yolk" as a garnish.

I've never seen aspic, so I've never had it. Again, maybe it's regional? It looks kinda weird... I'm going to google the recipe when I'm through with this post.
ETA: Hmmm... tomato juice, gelatin, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, sugar and hot pepper sauce? I'm not getting a good vibe about this! What is this dish served with (or is it eaten by itself)?
It's served as a salad -- on lettuce and often with a dab of mayonaisse (homemade or Duke's, of course ;) ) or a similar dressing on top.

I would point out that I detest lima beans, but I don't think everyone else loves those.
I do!

I'm with you on cherry pies, but apple pies and berry pies of any variety (blue-, rasp-, black-, straw-) are heaven on earth as far as I'm concerned.

And I hate rhubarb and pumpkin.

Glitter650 12-05-2007 01:12 PM

Watermelon. Chocolate milk.

nikki1920 12-05-2007 01:15 PM

lima, navy and pinto beans.

PeppyGPhiB 12-05-2007 03:43 PM

I used to be a really picky eater, but I've gotten better as I've gotten older.

I don't like:
- Raw tomatoes, unless in bruschetta in which case the olive oil counters some of the acidity
- Most seafood (though I love salmon - Pacific/wild salmon ONLY, no Atlantic salmon for me!)
- Eggplant, unless you're talking about the color
- White chocolate
- Curry and most Indian food
- Peas
- Cooked veggies, except for corn and green beans
- Avocados and guacamole
- Spicy "sauces"
- Most beans (black, lima, red, white, refried, garbonzo) - I don't like the texture
- Foie Gras

I didn't know my husband had a sister! :p

Seriously, my MIL, like your mother, likes everything cooked to death. She likes her red meat well done - if there's any pink in it whatsoever, she spends the entire meal whining about how her meat is "raw". She has been known to put lovely grilled medium-rare meat in the MICROWAVE until it's done to her satisfaction. Veggies have to be boiled and boiled and boiled until all the flavor and nutrients are gone - and then boiled some more. And everything has to be dead plain - no sauce, no spices, not even so much as a dash of black pepper. She says, and I quote: "If it has any flavor, spit it out, it's bad for you."

Needless to say, I had to educate my husband as to what a steak is supposed to taste like...

You were at my parents' house when my mom did that exact thing?!

I have been known to take vegetables out of the pot about 20 minutes before mom is done cooking them so there is some flavor and nutrients left. She will also boil fresh green beans (from her garden) until they are gray and flavor them with baking soda - because that is what her mom did. Don't get me wrong, there are some things she cooks very well that I have yet to be able to replicate - her chili is one of them. :)

I did have some of the worst stuffing imaginable this past Thanksgiving at a family gathering! There was enough salt in it to last me an entire year - and that was unfortunately really the only flavor to it. Mom's stuffing is SO much better! LOL

LOL - or our mother's were twin separated at birth!

And mom just got a new kitchen too! Three ovens and a stove. She does like to entertain - just likes to overcook food.

Funny story about unintentionally overcooking food - we were having broccoli cheese bites and mom misread the cooking instructions. Because this was during kitchen remodel she only had a microwave. Well, she cooked the food for the time it said for conventional oven - 15-18 minutes!! Needless to say, they really were not that edible.

aephi alum 12-05-2007 11:02 PM

Nope, that would be your mom and my MIL.

My mom is actually an excellent cook - she cooks Indian curries that would take paint off your car, stir-fries veggies so that they're warm but still crunchy, and makes the most amazing mac and cheese. I inherited her cooking genes... and her recipes :) ... and I have converted my DH to the realm of properly-cooked food :)

Sorry, I guess I should have clarified that it was not your mother and my mother that were separated but my mother and your husband's mother. I did know it was your mother-in-law.

SOPi_Jawbreaker 12-06-2007 09:54 AM

If I'm boiling veggies, I actually like them cooked until they're soft. Same with pasta. However, if I'm stir frying, then I won't cook the veggies that long.

My mom is usually a pretty good cook but the one weird thing she makes sometimes is cooked iceburg lettuce.  Yeah, you heard me right...cooked iceburg lettuce! And yes, it tastes as disgusting as it sounds. Whenever I would see her about to make that, I would be like "Ok, ok, I'll eat the lettuce but I want mine uncooked. I'll eat it as a salad."

nikki1920 12-06-2007 10:34 AM

cooked lettuce?

Baking soda as a flavoring?? That just sounds gross.

My MIL doesn't know how to make real gravy. The only kind she knows how to make is the powder from the little packages. So at thanksgiving, she pours out all of the "juices" from the turkey and then makes powered "brown" gravy. I refuse to eat it (I even offered to make gravy one year and she told me no!)

Hey, a kindred spirit!

Add to those:

Coffee
Chocolate and mint together in any form
Aspartame in anything
Melons (I love watermelon but I'm allergic to melons. :( Canteloupe actually smells like poison to me.)

whiteandblack 12-06-2007 02:38 PM

okra.

joliebelle 12-06-2007 07:22 PM

i don't like...
tomatoes
pork (ok, but i eat bacon)
fish
okra
onions
peppers
egg yolk
meatloaf
i think that's it...

Velocity_14 12-06-2007 07:41 PM

I absolutely HATE:

eggs---yuck!
potato soup---soup is not supposed to be thick...eeewwww!
dressing without cranberry sauce---it just doesn't taste right without it
any type of gravy
okra---just yuck!

Dear Lord, you should eat my mother-in-law's gravy! It's AWFUL! It's just thickened grease--absolutely no flavor and thick and gloppy. The mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving look so sad:(...and taste so plain...

I actually get to try this treat three times a year. She makes the SAME meal for every holiday--turkey, potatoes, gloppy gravy, etc.--for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.

genesis412 12-07-2007 02:36 AM

Mayo, hot dogs, sushi, any kind of fast food and gravy. All terrible!

LouisaMay 12-10-2007 04:58 PM

Everyone seems to think I've crazy, but I absolutely detest GARLIC!!!! Please keep it away. I hate everything about it! So in most restaurants, I have to be so, so careful about what I order. I've even been to places that put garlic on plain old green beans. Now why would you do that to a perfectly good bean?

WOW ... exactly the same thing happened to my Dad when he was a kid ... and he NEVER ate anything fowl ... so we had both turkey and ham for Thanksgiving and Christmas when I was growing up ...

dzrose93 12-11-2007 01:02 AM

Tomatoes and bananas -- I think it's a texture thing because I like the flavor of both. Banana flavored pudding is great, but the homemade stuff with actual banana pieces makes me squirm. And I'll eat cooked tomatoes but not raw ones -- the slimy seeds get to me.

justabeachbrat 12-11-2007 04:23 AM

Jello. Any color. flavor.
It jiggles.
I am not a squishy food fan.
They served jello in the dorms alot. I put some on a spoon, shot it off, and it stuck to the wall. Yes, immature, but serving it, disgusting.

Honeykiss1974 12-11-2007 02:02 PM

vegemite! :) I love it on sandwiches whenever I can get it.

LucyKKG 12-12-2007 07:02 AM

I don't like tomatoes even though my family grows amazing tomatoes (apparently). I also detest coffee. I don't like it in anything (a drink, ice cream, chocolate, etc.) Just EW!

PageantDiamonds 12-12-2007 02:40 PM

I would never eat a hot dog, and I don't let my son eat them, either. I also dislike the texture of squash.

cheerfulgreek 12-12-2007 04:17 PM

I know this isn't a food you eat alone, but I hate mayonaise. It's SO gross, and it makes me gag. I'm getting sick thinking about it.:(

I couldn't resist sharing that I thought of y'all when my mother-in-law served aspic at Christmas dinner. Part of my wife's Christmas present to me was to eat a bite or two of mine any time my MIL left the dining room. :D
