I could not find an Epsilon chapter for Alpha Phi, ASA, AST, or Phi Sig. I tried the forums, Google, and the National Websites.

My old Baird's copy has this information:

Alpha Phi--Epsilon chapter at Minnesota (not sure if they are still around) but founded in 1890.

ASA--Epsilon chapter at Fauquier Institute (not sure if active) founded in 1907.

AST--I don't see an Epsilon chapter listed

Phi Sigma Sigma--Epsilon chapter at Adelphi College (not sure if active) founded in 1920.

No real secret other than that was the way the founders chose to do it!

Like I said, it's confusing to many. The only kinda cool thing is you can get a pretty good idea of the age of the chapter looking at the second letter -- like the Psi Alpha, Chi Alpha, etc. -- The "Alphas" were right after the single letter chapters. Then next comes Psi Beta, Chi Beta, etc. (The "Betas" were installed in the 1920s mainly.)

You can't find it because Alpha Sigma Tau has never had an Epsilon chapter :)

Oh tricky! I'm glad you told me that! I was about to go to the library and go through the other Baird's Manuals!

Pi Phi pin guard

Right - the Pi Phi pin guard is traditionally the crest, done in gold filligree -a diamond shaped lozenge with a bird (Help! I forgot what kind, I believe that it is either the eagle or a phoenix, now I have to look this up) with arrows in one talon and wings stretched upward. Officer dangles may be added, but I have never seen a Pi Phi pin with a letter pin guard unless it was a very old one (pre-1930's). Excellent question - I have often thought that our pin was unique for this very reason. :)

carnation 12-13-2007 09:52 PM

Mine is a Gamma for my Pi Phi chapter, Alabama Gamma. Most of us had Gammas instead of the guard!

Then I was wrong & different chapters do it different ways. Thanks for the info, I always thought that every chapter used the crest. Carnation, do you know if the bird on the crest is a phoenix or an eagle?:)

carnation 12-13-2007 11:36 PM

I think an eagle. If it were a phoenix, I bet that it would have been widely publicized and they would have made it part of the ritual--it's so symbolic!

Hmmm, I called the Pi Phi Express rep in StL to order a guard for my D's badge and she said everyone orders the crest guard.

Sigma Kappa's Eta is active and is at Illinois Wesleyan University.
I think it may be our oldest continuously open chapter, but I'm not sure of that. They did just celebrate their centennial.

Thanks...your groups listing of chapters is not the easiest to navigate. Neither is AOIIs for that matter!

Phi Mu's Eta chapter was at Hardin College in Missouri, according to my history book. It was closed in 1911, one of several chapters who were ruled against in order for Phi Mu to be accepted into the NPC. Hope that helps!

AOII's Theta chapter is a DePauw, founded in 1907, it is currently inactive.

Alpha Phi's Theta chapter is at Michigan, founded in 1892. (Looks to be still active from the Michigan Panhellenic website)

Alpha Sigma Alpha, don't see a Theta chapter in my Baird's Manual.

Chi Omega's Theta chapter is at West VA, founded in 1905. (Looks to still be active from the WV Panhellenic website)

Kappa Delta's Theta chapter is at Randolph-Macon Woman's College, founded in 1903.

ETA: Not sure if Alpha Phi, ASA, Chi O, and KD are active Theta chapters....but I know AOII's Theta chapter isn't active currently.

Thanks you guys! I found that one last night but apparently missed it when I alphabetized the list. The Eta chapter of AXO is at Bucknell. I found them all in order of their admittance to NPC since I used the NPC site as a platform to find the websites easily. I've got everything updated and hopefully correct now!:D

Typo (ta kala's, not yours). It was Caldwell College in Kentucky. It became Kentucky College for Women in 1913 and I'm not sure but I think it then became Centre College. Either that or it no longer exists.

There's some sketchy info about this school, both online and in KD's history books. ???
