Or just deferring recruitment so you only give bids to PNMs who have proven themselves academically.

Deferred recruitment means you actually rush all semester long...a semester -long opportunity for dirty rushing...a semester-long rumor- and gossip-mill...I hate deferred recruitment!

Hi Tess, 6 to 8 weeks is indeed the norm. In most of our chapters, it's a six-week program stretched to 8 weeks - we count the first week as a sort of "paperwork" week, and the last week is initiation week. I, too, would prefer a longer time. It gives a New Member an incentive to make her grades, but the idea is to discourage hazing, plus many, many schools require this time period of the Greek groups. I only know of 1 school (there are probably more, but they're rare) that requires the old semester-long new member period.

I am in a local sorority and we have had some members that were in NPC sororities before they transferred to Eastern. I have only personally seen 2 come through since Ive been in school. They both had chapters here, but just didnt fit in with them. When they talked to Greek Life about it, they were told they were welcome to join us (were the only local sorority here). They both loved us and are now sisters.

We also had one of our sisters transfer to U of M dearborn and joined another local there becuase she missed greek life so much, but she realized they werent right for her and dropped within a year of being initiated. She is now coming around to our events more often and plans to be more active with us when she starts grad school.
