They like to make big time drama on this show, and what could be more big time than that... Bart dying doesn't effect ALL the characters... how does that effect Jenny, etc... but Vanessa dying effects them all as they all have some connection to her of sorts at this time...

I'm not sure how close they are planning on staying to the storyline in the books since they've already veered off course quite a bit, but if they're planning to stay somewhat in line with it then I don't think it'll be Vanessa. But I agree that it would definitely impact more people.

Isn't the actress who plays Vanessa really popular among fans?

I'm still going on the Bart Bass thing...Chuck will not inherit as much of Bass Industries as he would have imagined. This will also allow Chuck, who clearly loves being part of a family, to stay connected to Lily, Erik, and Serena in a way he wouldn't be able to if there was a divorce.

My money's on Bart Bass.

YES! And considering how disappointed Bart was in Chuck's interest in the bar in Brooklyn, I think he could totally end up not inheriting as much of the biz as he thinks.

a.e.B.O.T. 10-23-2008 02:42 PM

Yes, and Bart leaves it all to someone out of left field, like Eric... that would be a interesting dynamic, Eric vs. Chuck

I still don't think they'll kill off a young person. Bart's death could impact some more than others--ostensibly, Bart would have left the care of Chuck to either his own wife or to close friends. The close friend in mind would be the Archibalds, who clearly aren't in the position to take in anyone. In a crazy TV kind of way, I could see this impacting the Humphreys since Nate is now living with them.

Nate's dad dying doesn't really impact anyone. I think they'll have him come around once in a while to stir up the pot. It's likely that Nate has money from the other side of the family, and I could see the Captain trying to come back for some of that.

I can't wait for tonight! Or tomorrow, since I tend to watch it on the train ride to work on Tuesdays...:)

ALL of Nate's money is from his mother's side. That's why their assets were frozen I think.

We'll see what happens tonight.

did anybody else find jenny's new look kind of annoying? her bangs really bothered me. but the fact that she finally stood up to Eleanor was AWESOME!

I like the hair, I hate the makeup.

I thought the whole look was very 'trendy New Yorker', I liked the makeup better than the hair though.

Nate! You can do so much better!

mu_agd 10-28-2008 09:18 PM

yes! Kaitlin Cooper!

a.e.B.O.T. 10-29-2008 01:35 PM

i thought the haircut was kind of butchy... I thought this was just a weird episode for Jenny, she didn't really do anything, but her world fell apart at the same time, but then again, it didn't... very weird plot choices here...

big p.s. the actor playing jenny is only 15... so i felt a little uncomfortable seeing her dance in her bra and kissing Chace Crawford who is 23

WVU alpha phi 11-04-2008 01:30 PM

Thoughts on last night's episode? I was only half watching because I was reading at the same time. I didn't like Jenny's clothes for the fashion show at all though. I was also surprised when her father tried to have the officer arrest her- and also thought Serena's mom should've stayed out of it.

ZTAMich 11-04-2008 05:21 PM

Gossip Girl Gets it Right

NYMag has the best commentary on last night's episode...this is my favorite...

Oh! The Baby Gossip Girl that takes a picture of Nate and Jenny kissing is the same weird Serena Munchkin who accosted Dan and Serena in the park! Plus 1 for not forgetting that New York is an island where you see the same strangers all the time.

so so so true

That was the last episode I watched. I think I'm two behind now - Bonfire of the Vanity (which is currently downloading, SLOWLY, on iTunes) and the one from tonight, if there was a new ep tonight (which I think there was, because I saw a preview for it).

I didn't like Jenny's fashion show clothes much either, which is unusual, because I like most of the clothes she's designed, including the taffeta green one and the plaid-with-pink-tulle punky one from this season. Along with the whole makeover and hanging out with Agnes & Agnes's dude (what's his name again?), they're really making Jenny into more of a hipster character now.. which although I find it a bit eyerolling, does make sense. Since last year Jenny got booted from the uberpreppy Blair Crew, and now she's gotten booted from the House of Waldorf (which I have the impression of being very extremely classic and a bit conservative, maybe a bit Carolina Herrera), it makes sense for her to go more gritty. She seems to be a girl of extremes. I didn't like Jenny last season, and I was liking her a bit more this season, but after the last two eps, I think I'm getting sick of her again. Although I'm fascinated by the Nate/Jenny/Vanessa triangle.

I'm wondering how long before we get Dan/Vanessa in some form. It seems almost inevitable... I mean, they end up together in the books, no? Speaking of Vanessa, what did that blurb in the article about the death notices mean? That killing off Vanessa would get Cecily Van Whoever off the producers' backs? Does the author not like the show's version of Vanessa?

What does everyone think about Aaron Rose, now that he's appeared. He's so squicky to me, but Serena does seem to like the artsy/hipster types. I feel that this season is showing us a wider New York - last season was mostly uber-preppy UES, now we're getting some more of the grit.

Finally: I really love Rufus. And I can't wait to see where they all go to college. I know in the books they scatter to different schools, but I kind of predict they're all going to end up at one place in the show for the sake of ease.

agzg 11-24-2008 09:20 PM

Well, if they remain true to the books, people will scatter, then Gossip Girl will stay in NYC to follow the Carlisles.

Did anyone see the commercial for next week's episode? I CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE IT.

agzg 12-09-2008 02:47 PM

OK - spoilers for those of you who haven't seen it yet:

Lilly's secret? Abortion??? AHHHH another wrench in the tires for Rufus and Lilly. Which, I guess, is alright, but I think it was apparent (at least it was to me and live-in) that Lilly's mom didn't want her to start with a clean slate - she wanted to ruin the chances of Rufus and Lilly getting together. We'll see how that pans out. It's almost a little too daytime soap opera for my tastes, though.

I'm luke-warm on jerkface Chuck and I'm luke-warm on Chuck loves Blair Chuck. Can't we have a happy medium? I hope we get there soon.

It will be interesting to see the estate battle pan out - if in fact there is one. It seemed that Lilly wasn't going to fight him for it but now that Rufus is temporarily out of the picture maybe she'll actually put up a fight. Not sure.

Serena waffling between Dan and Aaron is starting to piss me off. I'm happy that Blair's actually acting like someone with a soul for once, though.

Is it weird that live-in loves Heroes, but last night he fell asleep during Heroes but was riveted during Gossip Girl? I know it's on later, that's how we see both - but he's been bored with Heroes lately and much more into GG.

I don't think Lily's secret is an abortion--there's no way that they'd know the gender of a kid. I'm calling that the kid is traipsing around France as we speak, or a worst-case scenario of stillbornness.

Hint: For spoilers, use [ color=whitesmoke ]; then replace it with [ color=gainsboro ] in quotes. Plain white shows up too easily in quotes.

Whitesmoke gets you this: This is a spoiler.

My husband I and sat down and watched Gossip Girl with my teenage son the other night. Everytime "Chuck" was on my husband would yell out, "STELLA!!!". The actor's brooding overacting was very Brando-esque.

My son was really p o'd and asked husband to leave the room! It was pretty funny.

I can see how the show is addicting. But, Chuck needs to dial down the acting about 10 notches...

My husband also kept interrupting to ask how the characters were related, not knowing their names he called them - Bad Teeth Boy, Patchy Bearded Emo boy, Too Much Makeup Teenager, etc. The only one he liked was the mom whose husband died in the wreck.

We may have to watch again next week to see the finale. Hee - guilty pleasure..

LOL! I totally love Lily--she's my favorite character!

agzg 12-10-2008 04:41 PM

There won't be another new episode until January 5th - stupid winter break!

WinniBug 12-10-2008 07:33 PM

I do NOT like Aaron Rose...he's too skuzzy for me....something just doesn't seem right...

I don't think Lily had an abortion, I do think there's a Rufus/Lily love child running around somewhere....

And I was almost in TEARS when Chuck turned to Blair with that look on his face..omg, I felt SO bad for him!

Same here. And not sure if it's legit or not. It'd definitely pull a different audience though. Age wise. Which kind of works for me in that it won't take away any of the show's young characters.

Perez ran the story today too and later said producers or whatever called and said it's not true. So who really knows.

sthrnsweetie007 12-12-2008 01:08 PM

I would think if they did a spinoff of GG, why would it not be The It Girl ?

It seems like the character of Jenny would have more of a following anyway... and filming the rest of the teenage cast at college, plus keeping up with Jenny in school, seems like it would be difficult in Season 3...

They have to have some sort of plan... a network would never sign a show that does not have a least SOME of idea for 5 to 7 seasons. They will have some way were Dan, Blaire, Serena, Chuck and Jenny are all still the main characters too... (or at least most of them)

Well, that's true, and sending everyone off to Yale (as opposed to the variety of institutions those characters attend in the books) would go a long way in making Season 3 filmable.

Yes! As much as I would love it if Serena went to Brown, and as much as the "California University" thing annoyed me about 90210, the only way we'll have a good Season 3 is if they all end up at one school, and hopefully not NYU or Columbia (gag gag).

I started this episode thinking, "am I still watching this melodramatic bullshit" and ended it with "omg, what happened on New Years and are Blair and Bass going to finally make this shit happen?"

We don't know. Near the very end, after Blair got Chuck down from the ledge, Uncle Bass put a wasted chuck in the limo and Blair told him not to tell him about New Years. Whatever that meant... it made it sound like Blair and Uncle Bass slept together... Dan and Serena are not blood related, no matter what, so I do not see where the constant hang up is...

I think Uncle Bass is the one handing Blair flowers in the previews for next Monday's episode.

I also think Uncle Bass is kind of hot. :)

Uncle Bass needs to fall off a cliff, no matter how hot he is. And I think Lily and Rufus's child comes into play later on but I'm not sure how? Though I'm very curious lol.

Previews didn't show Chuck at all in the next show? Unless I missed it which is possible. Blair seems to be back to her old games next week though lol.
