They urge her to lose the weight immediately, "for the sake of your sisters..." Of course she complied and lost the weight and she says "I felt great about it." This is from the late-80's era and several years after the highly-publicized death of Karen Carpenter, so it's not like people weren't aware of eating disorders. Anyway I'm sure you're all remembering similar counseling from rush advisors in years past...

Yeah, I don't what know chapter/sorority you're from, but my chapter has never been told to lose weight by any of our AAB members. Please correct me if that's not what you were trying to say, but that's not a practice of every sorority chapter in the country. I also don't see the comparison between being in a sorority and being on professional dance/cheer team.

At any rate I'm fairly sure this thread is about a TV show. So...

Correct KSUViolet that it was a slight hijack above. I am well aware of the DCC discussion in this thread. My tie-in to the DCC 2008 show is this: i was watching the exact same episodes being discussed here, and had similar feelings of nausea that "why are they so concerned about this girls body fat she looks fine to me and fits the uniform etc". My 7-year old daughter was sitting in the room watching the show with me. She was intently interested in all the dance routines and the glamour of the squad, but when this "weight segment" appears in this show I feel a need to turn it off. Even though that's what brings in the ratings, I don't really want my impressionable young girl to see it. So that's what I did - I turned it off. And then I was reminded of that weight story back in college and when it came up, the timing... was eerie.

Carry on...

KSUViolet06 10-25-2008 09:52 PM

The uniform fitting part of this episode was interesting, especially hearing what Kelli and Judy had to say about how certain body types just don't look good in the uniform. I wonder what happens when someone makes the cut body fat wise, but is just weirdly shaped and looks bad in the uniform?

On another appearance-related note, I LOLed a little when they were telling Brandi (girl with the curly hair and long fake nails) that some people may think "stripper" when they look at her and see her dance. I was thinking the same thing, but I thought that that was something they'd say behind closed doors and not to her face!

That Kathryn girl who got sent home seemed very sweet and determined. I feel like she could come back next year and make it. I don't see why they didn't send Brandi home instead.

BTW: Sometimes it's hard to be surprised by the show when you can look at the website and just see who made it, but I still watch lol.

Kelli says that if they can't make the girl look good in the uniform then they get cut.

Going back to the body fat % issue, I may be the only one, but I do think Erica was overweight for the uniform. She's not going to be wearing a DCC uniform if she continues to look like that. Erica was the only one that they said was "fat"--and even then I don't remember that word being used, they said she gained weight (which she did). Most of the other girls were between 14-20%. I don't see how it promotes eating disorders.

Anyways since I know that "my" girl doesn't make the team, I wanna see the episode where she gets cut! lol, if the previews show the girls that get called into the room, then she's not gonna get cut next week either. :( I wanna know why she gets cut.

sunnyhibiscus 10-29-2008 02:09 PM

I remember that in the two hour special from a few years back that Deanna Hernandez was told to lose weight. She's 5'2" and she the most she weighed was 115. There was nothing wrong with her. Her weight looks realistic on her height frame than someone who is 5'8".

Kathryn is a such a sweetheart. I hope that she comes back next year.

I do love this show, though! This makes me even more upset, because I don't have cable anymore :(

The Braves have "cheerleaders" as well. They call them the Tomahawk Team.

sunnyhibiscus 11-02-2008 04:11 PM

I saw the episode a few moments ago and they dig up some dirt about Brandi. They found some unflattering pics on her myspace page. The pics were about Brandi partying, and Kelli said that this was not what we like in the candidates. I think that this is a wise move by Kelli and Judy. I mean, there is nothing wrong with being a party girl, but you need to be more careful.

As for Katie, like Erica, there is nothing wrong with her figure. She is curvaceous. That's all.

I think this episode is something actually GOOD for younger girls to see, in terms of the internet thing. I'm friends with some of my HS-aged cousins and their friends on MySpace/Facebook, and I know that some kids their age will put pics like that up thinking they're cute/cool/sexy/whatever. Also, alot of times when you tell them that what they post can affect real life, they kind of roll their eyes and say "whatever, that won't happen."

I think kids can benefit from actually seeing that the things you put out there can affect you in real life, whether it's with applying for jobs, going through recruitment, trying out for a team like DCC, ANYTHING.

Capital letters and correct grammar would make this somewhat understandable.

Well said! And in one of my classes, my professor said that bosses can google your name for background information. So if you have any damaging photos that will ruin your chances at anything, take them down immediately! Also, clean up your profile and have an appriate e-mail address without any strong words or symbols in there (like the two numbers that look identical when you flip them). Because if someone googles your name and see something that is not right or if you have an e-mail address that looks too risque, then... you know what happens.

Just a mini-hijack.

This show is one of my reality show favorites. The coach and his wife were also on an episode of one of the wife swap shows.

To be honest, I think professors telling their classes this is a little extreme. I also heard this a lot in college, and I followed this rule and blocked my facebook pics when I was applying for jobs, but left webshots up and you can easily find pics on there when you google my name. Now, having worked for 3 companies in the HR/recruiting field, I have never once googled somebody. Nor do I know of any people in the same industry who have done this. I'm sure some employers do, but it doesn't seem to be the big deal that everyone makes it out to be.

I will agree with you on the email address though, and same goes for voicemail. I've seen so many applications and resumes with "sexiigurl2005" or REALLY risque ones. As far as voicemails- atleast change it to slightly more professional, you don't have to go overboard. I just hate hearing music blaring, a lot of slang terms, or especially horrible ringbacks.

Back to DCC, I'm surprised Leah was cut. It seemed like they really only picked on her that one night, then she was done. I'm glad Alyssa is still in the running, she's my favorite rookie!

epchick 11-11-2008 03:22 PM

The girl I know got cut in this past episode. Kinda sucks for her, but I don't know how far she thought she'd go. She was on a dance team in HS, for maybe like 2 years, but I wouldn't consider her a "dancer" and she wasn't ever a cheerleader (well not that i know of).

sunnyhibiscus 11-13-2008 11:39 PM

Five of those people that were cut (either from last year's squad or from the training camp rounds) are now Dallas Mavericks Dancers. I think that something like the Dallas Maverick Dancers, Dallas Desperados Dancers or the Dallas Ice girls are for those who want to develop for the DCC, for those who have run out of mileage for the DCC, or who is not cut out for the DCC.

And it's a little late for this, but I have a feeling that Megan Fox will be the head choreographer of the DCC one day.

sunnyhibiscus 11-16-2008 01:04 AM

Next week is the season finale. I have a feeling that one of my favorites would be the last cut, based on next week's preview.

As for tonight's episode, I wasn't surprised that Sunni was cut. She had a lack of endurance.

KSUViolet06 11-22-2008 07:17 PM

I feel like they made more cuts toward end of this season's training camp (like, in the last 2 episodes) than they did last season. They seemed to be a lot more particular this year and not taking on some "on the bubble" girls who may have made the cut last season.

I remember that last season, they even took on more girls than they were planning (38 instead of 36). They probably feel as though they were too lenient last year (even taking on a girl who could barely do the kick line).

I really liked Alyssa and I hope she tries out again next year.

sunnyhibiscus 02-06-2009 02:46 PM

*bump*

I've read on the official website that the DVDs of the past seasons are in the works. I hope that it gets on DVD. By the way, I love the new website. I'm sure many of you have seen it. I love the cheerleaders' blogs. They offer great tips and insights.

The Pro Bowl Representative is Nicole Hamilton. I guess that she have redeemed herself after missing that NFC division question.

And auditions start on May 10th, which is on a Sunday. I think that it's weird to have auditions on a Sunday, especially with many people going to church.

Well, the games are on Sundays. So if Sundays are out of the question, they shouldn't be there.

Jennifer McMahon gone ?

I read rumors on two different DCC message boards (yahoo DCC group & cmt.com) that Jennifer McMahon might have been kicked off the squad. Her profile, blog, and individual picture are gone from the official DDC site. She is still on the group picture. Anybody hear anything about this?

You came to GreekChat and signed up just to post that? Axe to grind much?

AnatraAmore 06-20-2009 09:52 AM

Bumping because the website says they'll be airing Season 4 this fall... yay! And a couple of the girls from last year's training camp are back: Brandi Kilby (the one who looked like a stripper) and Sunni Cranfill.

KDAngel 06-21-2009 11:19 PM

I love this show, but I don't watch CMT aside for this so please bump it again when it's going to air again.

WenD08 06-23-2009 05:22 PM

not until the fall. the air date hasn't been announced.
