I was a Rho Chi years ago. I had a transfer woman in my group who had come from a top tier private college to our state school. She was just an ordinary looking girl but with a great sense of humor and outstanding grades. She had transfered due to family financial reasons. She was cut at skit day by all groups. We sat in the private room set aside for these situations for 45 minutes! She was so distraught! It took a while but I found that she had gone thru recruitment at her previous school and was cut there as well. How absolutely devastating for a young woman who obviously had assets no one else could see! I felt so bad for her and knew I was not offering anything nearing the amount of sympathy she needed - no matter how hard I tried. She left that day looking so sad and I cried even more! Fast forward two years....I was at a PH meeting and there she was! She had COB'd another group and was their PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!
Talk about making lemonade out of lemons. I greatly admired this woman for having the guts to try a third time and finally getting the brass ring. She was so polished and so self assured that I went up and gave her a big hug. I've never been prouder of anyone in a GLO than I was of her. It can happen.

I tried to Google and it asked me if I meant "Glam Beauty". Typo maybe?

ETA: I think she means this...

AnchorAlumna 09-04-2007 11:10 AM

The Glomerata is Auburn's yearbook. So a "Glom Beauty" is a yearbook beauty.

AuburnPNMmom 09-04-2007 03:40 PM

I will - she is going back to the chapter room tonight......

FSUZeta 09-04-2007 08:25 PM

that sounds promising...hope she gives it a shot!

AuburnPNMmom 09-04-2007 08:48 PM

My daughter did not take the bid. I fully understand the reasons. I think she needs to make her own mind up and be where she can be happy. I thank you for helping me through my worries and questions. I believe that things will ultimately work out as they are meant to be......

UGAalum94 09-04-2007 08:54 PM

Good luck! Let us know next fall what she decides about re-rushing and how it works out.

UNCKKG 09-04-2007 09:07 PM

It sounds like you gave her a lot of really good advice and support, which probably helped her make the right decision. If she wants to take this year to think about rushing again next year, I would suggest that she try to join campus organizations that have lots of Greeks as members. This will give her a chance to get to get to know girls from different houses, and if she clicks with any of them, they will certainly help her out during rush next year. The sororities' websites will usually list the organizations they're involved in. I hope she puts this behind her and has a great freshman year! My Kappa big sis got laryngitis during her freshman year rush and had to drop out right before pref night. She re-rushed as a sophomore, and everything worked out, but she was actually really appreciative of the year she had to find her place at Carolina on her own, and she always encouraged me to keep up non-Kappa friendships so I would have as broad a social circle as possible.

AuburnPNMmom 09-04-2007 09:59 PM

Yes, she is already going to meetings this week for various organizations, and actually this seems to have bolstered her again.....She has a new resolve and I am glad for that.....

icelandelf 09-04-2007 10:05 PM

I applaud her for her strength of character and you for instilling it in her.

AuburnPNMmom 09-04-2007 10:07 PM

awww - thanks - I am proud of her....

Tom Earp 09-29-2007 04:21 PM

As much as I hate to say it, welcome to Southern Schools recruitment. It seems from all of the reports, very brutal. You are pretty much chosen before hand.

I am sure she is dissapointed, but, that is the way it is!:o

SthrnZeta 09-30-2007 09:29 PM

So how did the meetings go? Did she end up somewhere else through COB??

AuburnPNMmom 09-30-2007 10:36 PM

Things are *somewhat* looking up...She is not in a sorority and is hoping for a bid in January. Her favorites have completely changed from what she thought before rush -The sorority she thought she wanted would not have been a fit for her..she has been selected to one of the groups on campus that assists an athletic program....She is the only one not in a sorority that is a member and she LOVES the girls she is with - and wishes for a bid to that sorority but also likes 2 others - the hard part for that is meeting the girls....I am hoping something will open up with that one....The girls are really sweet -- I just keep encouraging her - grades are good - really good and other activities she has is keeping her busy....she has been to every football game with pledges from fraternities and has met many girls also.....It is still hard for her at times, but she has a good outlook on the situation....Thanks for asking.....

SthrnZeta 09-30-2007 10:44 PM

Best of luck to her! Please keep us posted when she finally finds her home :-)

AuburnPNMmom 09-30-2007 10:46 PM

I will - I have my fingers and toes crossed for the one she wants and that she will meet other girls to the other 2 - one of them is heavy in my family - with one former national member - just hope that they all keep the recs they got on her....not sure how that works with COB....

SWTXBelle 10-01-2007 08:25 AM

Someone from Auburn weigh in - would it help for alumnae to write a "re-introduction" note - perhaps letting the chapter that PNM is interested in spring recruitment?

FSUZeta 10-01-2007 08:36 AM

yes, please. writing a letter to let the chapter know that the pnm is interested in the chapter sounds like a great idea. please auburn folks, let us know.

AuburnPNMmom 10-01-2007 12:02 PM

The girls who are interested do fill out a form and it is in the greek office....I think, though that they really go by the girls from their pref list who didn't match anywhere.....I don't want to hurt her chances, but one friend who did a rec did email the rush chair, because they sent her a note thanking her for her rec, but had all the wrong names on it so she wanted to make sure they even knew who my D was.....and to let her know she is still interested....

FSUZeta 10-01-2007 05:22 PM

i did email 2 advisors to a chapter that i sent a rec. to when i found out that the pnm i wrote the rec. for had to drop out of recruitment due to illness and found out the chapter had a few slots open . they invited the girl to a few events and she ended up accepting a bid!

shadden 10-01-2007 09:21 PM

I am very curious about which houses she likes at Auburn - are you willing to share?

FSUZeta 10-01-2007 10:19 PM

i don't think that's a good idea before the fact.

lillylover3 10-04-2007 10:18 PM

no, definitely not a typo. guess you'd have to be from the south to know what miss glomerata was at auburn! it's like a beauty pageant. all the sororities nominate girls to represent their chapter at the event. it's sponsored by the year book.

AUAZD2001 10-16-2007 11:35 PM

If I remember correctly, the winner goes on to compete in the Miss Auburn University pagent (whitch feeds into Miss Alabama and then Miss America.). I think Delta Sigma Phi's Miss Fall Rush pageant does as well.

AuburnPNMmom 01-17-2008 11:57 PM

My daughter has turned down several bids - even when I was telling her not to.....but... in the end......she is now a proud member of....................
