oh, i hve another one - people who wear dingy/dirty/2nd rate para. i know we sometimes be on a budget, but that doesnt mean you have to break out that 5 year old shirt with the hole you think no one will notice or the jacket that is a little bit too small. and please, stop making puffy paint shirts!!! i had to have an intervention once... it wasnt cute. save your pennies and buy some good para. stuff that will last you. stuff that hopefully wont shrink, fade, and what not. |

From someone who has judged step shows, the reason it takes so long is because we have to sit there and add up all the points for the different categories. Which brings me to another point. If your chapter (or group) is hosting the step show, please provide the judges with (cheap) calculators. Adding by hand / in your head really slows the judge down. Also, it is not always the judge's fault. We turn in the score sheets to the chapter (or group in charge), then it is up to them to get the results out in a timely manner. |

hey soror, quick question: do judges score teams after they perform or at the very end of the show? |
Quote:
The way I ususally do it is to take notes in the margin and put down a few scores as the groups perform. It is usually pretty easy by the end of the night who has won. Some groups step, some groups (mostly the guys) just stand there with their shirts off grinding the floor and each other while yelling offensive remarks about the other frats. And, I'm like 'dude, you're grinding the floor and each other and trying to call another frat gay????' |

Step show judges don't have a national organization with meetings to make it all uniform (or do they?). :) There are judges who essentially do the rock paper scissors thing because they don't know what the heck they just finished watching. Whether groups are scored after each performs or at the end is sometimes based on the rules established for that show. |

I'm not a fan of step shows but I love shows where you get points deducted for trying to sex the crowd. If you aren't going to step, do not enter into a step show competition. Save your sex and your offensive remarks about other frats for your bedtime routine. I went to a show last week where there were HIGH SCHOOL students on stage gyrating to J.Holiday's "Bed." The crowd was yelling but my Sorors and I sat there like ":rolleyes:." I even BOOO'd as they left the stage. Their mentors need to be flogged. The mc of the show said "yeah...I heard you all screaming...you forgot these are children...." |

One of my biggest pet peeves has to be when a step show has a majority of participants from the same fraternity or sorority. I love the bruh but after 2 teams I can predict whats going to happen. Variety is a good thing. |

Soror....where you at the step show in Murfreesboro TN? b/c the same thing happened and I was sitting there like "Imma need for these young azz kids to get off the stage with this mess!" And it was to "Bed" I believe..... |

You were there too???? This is a darn shame if we were all there and didn't meet:mad::mad::p;):D. |

YES!!!! That is so annoying!! Especially when the majority of the audience are members or connected to the organization. I went to a stroll comp this past spring, and there were 2 teams of 2 different orgs competing...two from the same org made it to the finals and the winners were one of the teams from the other org who made up most of the audience, their sisters were also in attendance; I really like variety in shows i wouldn't have minded having another fraternity/sorority on stage. Another thing I must add which pertains mainly to fraternities...the 'thug' look isn't appealing especially if you're supposed to be a college educated EXAMPLE for younger men of color, I want my folks to be proud that I joined a brotherhood that helps folks like me out, not for em to scold me cause they may think it's a gang, LOL. I also don't care for many chants, ESPECIALLY those that involve various profanities or some that are pretty much just folks hollering nonsense! We're much more grown than this, let's act like we are! |
I concur the grinding in all of the steps shows really can go... points should really be deducted for overtly explicit movements!
|
^^^ Basically. If you can't do a real show without making it resemble a BET video, you shouldn't be stepping. That includes whipped cream and that dang pyramid of men. That pyramid is so
|
good lord. not the whipped cream. you'd be surprised at how many people are NOT impressed by that whole thing.

Hayle, I'm shamed for us as sorority women. Can we show that we have standards at some point? That's why I don't like stripper moves in strolls. |

With thousands of members, smart people have figured out that we're a diverse group of women and that no subsection represents the whole. Dumb people and those who aren't exposed to our diversity are of no concern to me. |

That bolded part got under my skin. I thought our collective purpose as Black Greeks was to uplift. Part of uplifting would be to provide positive role models for everyone, not just those who already know us. There's young girls that will be debutantes or are fighting some tough circumstances who might not have the first clue about sorority life but could be inspired by our sorors and sistergreeks. They may want to be like us someday. However, watching some pornographic simulation as a twisted portrayal of organizational pride is shameful display that could confuse young girls. It could confuse those who have not been exposed yet but are bound to be exposed at some point in life. |

This one stroll I vividly remember had much more to do with clapping and throwing the yo to the left and the right with some shimmy moves added than us doing any actual strolling--we would only stroll four steps at a time before getting into the elaborate hand moves. I had to leave the stroll line to do what I do best--twirl my cane!! :D What can I say? I learned all the 90s Kappa strolls only to learn in the new millenium, they're obsolete. :p Keep it simple, Nupes! |
^^^I think I have seen that stroll you speak of LOL
Alot of my peer orgs (and NPHC orgs as well) think we need to be extra with strolls....the simplest strolls entertain people, you're not on So You think You Can Dance or Dancing with the Stars you're strolling to a beat plain and simple...*shrugs* I was trying to learn a stroll but it was way too extra (I felt I had to be a professional choreographer :D ), I'm all for simple strolls especially if you're just doing it at a party that's not hosted by your org. |

Yeah, strolling gets really complicated when you look at undergrads doing their thang at a function. If I can't get those new school strolls, I always have "Old Faithful". ;) But trying to learn too many of these newer strolls can make you lose an important phone number in your memory because you remembered one too many 8 counts to a stroll.
