PA Anyone??
Does anyone live in the York, Harrisburg, Hanover area of Pennsylvania? Hubby and I are talking about relocating. I am interested in school systems, private schools, things to do for black people, what areas not to live in and any other info that may be helpful.
If we move, hubby will be commuting to DC, which is why counties closest to the PA/MD line are what we are looking at. Thanks!!:) |

that is a serious commute! i know some people who live in that general area who commute to baltimore area... but i can't imagine pushing that extra hour (plus) to come all the way down to DC every morning.

umph
there is a guy in my husband's office that commutes from westminister (carroll county) into dc. when hubby and i were looking at some of the builders (ie: ryan homes) the models that are going for over 300K down the street from me are going for b/w 130K and 150K right over the line. with what we make now, we could live very comfortably. its going to be an ongoing conversation. i refuse to be house poor. we are looking at the eastern shore and the shenandoah valley as other options.

shenandoah is BEAUTIFUL.

I have a co-worker who lives in Richmond and works here; that's a 2 hour commute. Each way. People in the DC metro area do it a lot, mostly due to housing costs. But with gas prices being what they are, I'm not sure how long that will continue for the average worker.

yup
that is what i heard, but hubby doesnt want to live in virginia :(.

Teena,
This happens in law too. Employers always want to find out whether you will be around for awhile and think that if you are from out of state that may not occur. I recommend identifying an important connection to the place where you want to go. Employers respect this and believe that it will keep you in an area. For example, do you have family there? Other ties? You would want to point this out early on in your cover letter noting all of your qualifications - yes, it's that important to employers. I recommend explaining the tie that you have in the cover letter and reiterating somehow during the interview. It costs employers alot of money to train someone that leaves so they want some assurance that you're likely to stay in the area. For some reason, it's almost as if they see themselves as interchangeable with other companies so it's not enough to just say that you really want to work for their company. YOu have to have more...geographically so think about it. I'm sure that you have some tie to the place where you want to move. SC Quote:

not one single testimony for the great city of NY? :(
well that's understandable. the nightlife is very 21+ (and 23+, then 25+, sigh), expensive ALL the way around, the dating scene - garbage (everyone's dated everyone). and no one is from here anymore - everyone is a transplant from either Smalltown USA or another metropolis (DC/Atlanta/LA/Chicago/Seattle). the AA community - where? we're around, but then again we're not. its hard to explain. my educated AA circle are NPHC, and were not as deep as some other cities. plus raising kids here, while i am a product of it, would not recommend it, not even in the "suburbs" of the outer boroughs. so, where does a Noo Yawker relocate when she knows nothing comes close, even through all its flaws? I know there's some sacrifices, but i leave NY for more than 2-3 days and i start to get the shakes. |
To the Sorors in Houston:
I will be moving there in July to attend TSU for an MBA w/ conc. in Health Services Admin. I will be visiting next week primarily searching for somewhere to live. I'm still in the "broke student" range. Are there any suggestions? I plan to have a GA position and a job... |

Hey Sorors,
I will be moving to HOUSTON in the next month or so. I will be staying with a friend at first, but where should I move once I get my own place? I want to be near as many professional black folks as possible. I'd prefer to live as close to the city as possible too. Do any restaurants in Houston have black Friday like they do in Dallas? Thanks a bunch :) |

Feel free to PM me. ;) |

Sorors, I am moving to Houston this summer. I've set the date as the last weekend in June. I'm looking for a job there, but I'm not having much luck. I recently received a BS in Health Services Administration, & I will be attending Texas Southern University in the fall working towards a MBA w/ concentration in Health Services Adminstration. I've been checking the openings at hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, & the Greensheet. The "I got the hook up" thread made me think of this one. Do any sorors in the Houston area have any suggestions or know of any openings? If so, please pm me! Just a little additional info: *I was involved in other organizations & held executive offices *Graduated w/ above a B average *recently completed an internship in the Marketing & Foundation department of a local hospital There's more including my goals, attributes, & a cover letter & resume, but I wanted to keep it brief. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to respond! |

unspokenone25, pm coming your way! |
Oh, & just to update, I have a job & finished turning everything in for classes (I think).
|
Ok. I see alot of Houston people in this thread. Anyone have a realtor that could assist me in in finding a nice place? I am not sure of the one I'm working with.
|
Cosign ... I'm one of those relocators that u mentioned. Ever since I was a little girl, when I used to come to visit my uncle and aunty in Brooklyn, I always said I wanted to live here ... and now I am. In the end ,it has made me a tougher/stronger/independant (in a good way) person, and Ibesides I just love the fashion and the overall swag. Though Im from a smaller urban setting .. I feel like NYC is my new home :]

I'm glad I found this thread again!
I'm relocating to San Marcos, TX in August as I got a new position at Texas State. It's between Austin and San Antonio. I think a lot of the students live in Austin, anyone have any insight about it? I'll probably be traveling to Houston regularly as well to join the alumni chapter there (it's the closest one to me). So everything I've read about Houston has been helpful too. |

I've been to Texas State a couple of times for a step show. It's the consumate college town. But, there is a great outlet mall in San Marcos so you'll definitely enjoy that! |

I've been warned about the outlet mall :p already! I'm looking forward to experiencing a new place though. |

Anyone have any advice on my move from New Orleans to Houston???
Hello Everyone,
I am in need of some advice. I just graduated and have accepted an offer with a very prominent company in Houston. The problem is that I'm getting more scared everyday. I am from a small city (New Orleans) compared to Houston. Everyday my nerves are bothering me more and more. I have been to many cities, but it was only short-term, I even lived in Harlem for 3 months. Please give me some advice on how to deal with this. I am driving myself crazy, even the apartment hunt is killing me. I just want to calm my nerves. I Love New Orleans because everybody knows everybody. LOL. But, I know its not the best place to be Post-Katrina, so I chose to start my career elsewhere. But I think that I am starting to regret it. I leave in approximately 2 months, and I just don't know what to do. :( |

I'm from Houston - born and raised. The one thing about Houston is that you need a car. As far as apartments - it depends on where you want to live. There is decent housing and not so decent housing all around town. If you don't like long commutes, then try to live close to your job. Right now the housing market is so-so, leaning towards the buyers side, so you might be able to get a very decent house / condo starting at around 150,000. Recently a developer was auctioning off his condos starting at 80,000. No matter where you live, go see it first - just don't go by the web site. There's lots to do and get involved in, so don't worry about a social life. |

Thanks for the info. That sounds really cool. It's just that the area where my job is located is not exactly a great area to live in and I hate to commute. |

I love Houston, but there never really was or is any true urban planning and there is no zoning. So, you (the general you) could live in a great apartment / house / condo and be next door to a trashy automotive shop. There is a web site that you can use to check out property in and around Houston, www.har.com, but like I said, before you commit to anything go see it first. |

I just moved to Houston about 3 wks ago. You have a job, so that's one thing out of the way. Like everyone else says, calm down. If you really want help with an apartment, you can always try a locator. www.houston.craigslist.com or www.thegreensheet.com. I also found this one http://houston1apartments.com/ helpful, but the natives will know more.
