Honoray Alumni: Alemannia (Munich, Germany)

hazelle 04-03-2008 06:26 PM

Checked out all pages and have not found the listing for famous Alpha Xi Deltas:

Marcia Wallace (actress, Bob Newhart show) NOT a Delta Zeta (sorry!!)
Goldie Hawn actress
Betsey Johnson-fashion designer
Jan Davis-astronaut
Sandra Scheuer-shooting victim at Kent State

PhiGam 04-04-2008 12:42 AM

We have a ton... my personal favorites are Jack Nicklaus and Payne Stewart. My fraternity has won like 30 majors!

Jennifer Dunn was definitely a Gamma Phi Beta. She's been written about in our sorority's magazine many times and IIRC several years ago she was a special guest at at Founders Day event at her former chapter (Lambda - UW). She was also an alumna of my high school and my aunt knew her back in da' day. :p

Tau Kappa Epsilon is proud to say that Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers is a member of our fraternity.

Delta Chi has many of it's brothers go on to become successful and famous. Names like Benjamin Harrison, William Jennings Bryant, Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher are among the most recognizable of our alumni. But one trumps even these great men.

No offense but, how does a "shooting victim" constitute as someone who is famous? It's unfortunate but, AXiD has many other important/ famous women to mention a unfortunate shooting victim.

Debbie Phelps (and her daughters)-mother a Michael Phelps
Kathryn Stockett-Author of "The Help" which is being adapted into a movie
Dana Ivey-Actress (who just happens to be in the new movie, "The Help")
Evette Simmons-Former President of the National Bar Association (also a Delta Sigma Theta)

Ann Bowden-Wife of Bobby Bowden (FSU Football Coach) and mother of the Bowdens who are coaches at other schools

I'm sure there are more but, I don't want to add anymore, tonight.

She wasn't a victim of a random shooting. The Kent State shootings were a big deal.

But...

same question to you: how are mothers and wives of famous people counted as famous?

Straight from Wikipedia (quite the hefty list):

  • Rabbi Arnold Resnicoff - Navy chaplain, National Director of Interreligious Affairs (American Jewish Committee), and Special Assistant (for Values and Vision) to the Chief of Staff and Secretary of the United States Air Force

same question to you: how are mothers and wives of famous people counted as famous?

I get that the Kent shootings were a big deal but, if we're gonna' go that far-why not make the sorority women who were affected by the Virginia Tech shootings "famous" members, too? It seems odd to me. The Iraq war is also a big deal but, I don't know if my sorority should consider me a "famous" alumna because I was affected by it.

As far as mothers, wives, daughters, etc-you need to check some of the names of people that are considered "famous" because of who they are married to, mothers of, etc. Many of these organizations say, "So-and-So, famous little sister of So-and-So" or "So-and-So, wife of Dr. Seuss" or whoever. If those organizations can do the same thing, I see nothing wrong with saying Debbie Phelps, mother of an Olympic swimmer and an AUTHOR, is famous.

Thank you! What a lovely thing to say.

KSUViolet06 11-07-2010 03:15 PM

I am not the biggest county music fan, but everyone knows that our most famous alumna is probably Carrie Underwood.

Carrie is a very generous Foundation donor and she was also our keynote Convention speaker in 2007. She also donated tons of signed items and concert tickets to our most recent Foundation auction!

She got married over the weekend of Convention 2010 and several sisters were unable to attend Convention because they were invited to attend her (most likely super awesome) wedding.

Just some clarifications (I have my new member book right in front of me...and I know it's legit because it came from nationals since I was colony member!)

Marcia Wallace is not an Alpha Xi Delta, nor is Goldie Hawn.

I surrender all alumni bragging privileges to you. I thought we had a fighting chance with Kirk Fogg, but I was sadly mistaken. Here's to you Dorcas Riley.

turqwind 11-09-2010 05:08 PM

Where was Ann Bowden an Alpha Xi Delta? Where did she go to college?

She's not. She, like als463 who listed her, is a Phi Mu.

Ann Bowden went to Howard College, now Samford.

And AlphaFrog has indeed won at this thread.

turqwind 11-09-2010 05:28 PM

Ann Bowden was 16 when she ran across the Georgia state line with Bobby Bowden to get married. Was she an alum initiate?

I'm afraid you'll have to settle for a tie! From our Accomplished Member list: Agnes White Tizard, Sigma [chapter], Nutritionist; "Betty Crocker" authored Betty Crocker cookbook. There wasn't a color for red plaid...

And KSUViolets08, since you love country music so much, we have Deana Carter & Cathy Deupree (a.k.a. Jett Williams).

One of my favorites, though, is Jean Smart from Designing Women. I was even born on her birthday!

She and Bobby later went to college, as MysticCat said. When he was president of Pike, she was president of Phi Mu. No, she was not an Alumna Initiate. She was initiated in college.

turqwind 11-10-2010 04:53 PM

Bobby had already been to UA and was at Howard when they married. I just wondered about the sorority membership since I had always heard they ran off to Georgia to get married when she was 16. Live and learn.

That's all fine and well but, she is not an alumna initiate. You seem to know an awful lot about the Bowden family so, I'm shocked that you don't appear to know the answer to your own question. Why do you know so much about them?

ChioLu 05-17-2018 01:20 PM

From watching the Today Show this morning, learned that Megyn Kelly is a member of Tri Delta (Syracuse).

What has that got to do with it? Many married people back then were college initiates. It went out of favor but some have lately. We don't have a rule against it.

Proving that the Internet is forever.

I never understood the whole famous people thing myself. *shrug*

This one is famous by birth — chef and Food Network host, Bobby Flay, has a daughter (Sophie) who just graduated from USC (California, not Carolina) who is a DG. He was on “The Chew” today and they showed her graduation photo with her DG sash.

So Sylvester Stallone’s daughter and Bobby Flay’s daughter were both DG’s at USC the same time. DG Dad’s Day was a celebrity event!

Sciencewoman 06-06-2018 09:18 PM

^^^ I know a DG alumna from USC. She married the son of the former/retired CEO of Anheiser-Busch. I'm getting a sense that this chapter may have some connections to the rich and famous....

TLLK 06-12-2018 09:57 PM

This young lady is a Kappa Kappa Gamma at Stanford University and is the chapter's PR chairperson. Her name is Maggie McGraw and her parents are Tim McGraw (Pi Kappa Alpha) and Faith Hill.

Actress Lori Laughlin (“Full House”) said on the Today Show this morning that her daughter, Isabella Giannulli, is in college and joined a sorority. She’s 19 so she’d be a rising sophomore. Isabella’s dad is fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli.

Anyone know details?

panhelrose 08-02-2018 04:44 PM

I believe Bella joined Kappa at USC just based on the fact that USC Kappa is the only USC sorority she follows on instagram, and they follow her too.

Sister Havana 08-02-2018 07:28 PM

Hailie Scott (Eminem's daughter) is a ZTA from Michigan State University.

AlwaysSAI 08-04-2018 01:32 PM

Not famous outside of SAI, but SAI's current National President (2012-Present), Leslie Odom Miller, DMA, is a member of Delta Delta Delta initiated at Butler University.

Sen's Revenge 08-05-2018 09:20 AM

Omari Hardwick (Ghost from Power) is an Alpha.

Barry Jenkins, director of Moonlight, is also an Alpha.
