^^^ The people who take it seriously are going to be the same people who think CSI is a realistic police/forensic drama, that ER or Grey's Anatomy are realistic medical dramas, that Perry Mason or Boston Legal are realistic courtroom dramas . . . .

Those people already buy into the stereotypes -- they've picked them up from all over the place, and this show will just reinforce what they want to believe anyway.

33girl 07-10-2007 10:21 AM

Some of the inaccuracies were ridiculous (like the fraternities having a quota and one person being able to give bids). I certainly didn't expect the "I'm not gay, I was just drunk" twist. Oh, and some of the acting - yeesh, I haven't seen emoting this wooden since Facts of Life season 1.

It was funny - the way the SNL Tri-Delt skits were funny. However, I wouldn't want younger kids to watch it and think that's really what Greek life is like.

Is it just me or is Cappy really Kutcheresque?

Ah! That's who he reminded me of!!! The name of the actor was on the tip of my tongue during the entire program, just couldn't think of it.

Cappy was some great comic relief.

"Call me!"

banditone 07-10-2007 10:48 AM

The youngster "Rusty" really reminded me of "Jason Melon" - Rodney Dangerfields son in "Back to School".

I somehow doubt that Animal House got this much negative publicity when it came out.

Animal House was also an R rated movie in theaters, not on a TV channel whose largest audience is 12 year olds.

honeychile 07-10-2007 11:37 AM

I'll bite - Greek Advisors all over the country were asking Greeks to boycott Animal House.

Yeah, right.

Oh yeah and why is this on the "Family" channel????

Styrofoam 07-10-2007 02:37 PM

I didn't get to see it, but the reception by greeks seems to be decent. I doubt it can add anything worse than whats out there, so i'm going to give it a chance.

Kevin 07-10-2007 02:45 PM

I don't even get the ABC Family channel. I was going to DVR this thing but I couldn't seem to locate it.

-- it's a channel, right?

33girl 07-10-2007 02:48 PM

Why this mess is called a "Family" channel

Pat Robertson's fault

RutgersPIKE 07-10-2007 03:17 PM

The next major plan was to reposition the channel to market it to college students, young women, or to a more hip audience under the name XYZ, a reverse reference to ABC. Disney soon found that the channel could never be renamed as such. The sale from CBN contained a stipulation from Robertson that the channel contain the word "Family" in the name forever, no matter who owns the network. To create XYZ, the Family Channel would have had to cease to exist - terminating all existing cable TV contracts - and XYZ would have to be created as a new network. Cable companies would not be obligated to put XYZ in the spot vacated by the Family Channel. ABC scrapped the idea after discovering this clause.[2].
The name was revisited at one point, serving as a program block entitled "The XYZ".

Thats why the name family is in it, one of the agreements of the sale was to keep family in it

Uh.. no, actually, its a K and a Sigma, which is S.
"oh, well, you know what i Mean, it looks like an E"
Not really. Epsilon looks like an E. For an example, go look at the Tau Kappa Epsilon House. That is an E.
"whatever. It still looks like an E."
okay, we're done.

New ABC show

I actually didn't get to see the show until today (thank you Tivo!) and I really have mixed feelings on it. On the one hand, I like the basic plot line. On the other hand, it shows a skewed portrayal of Greek life (although not as skewed as others I've seen). It basically takes the media's ideas of Greek life and throws in a little bit of truth. It also portrays fraternity life in a more positive way than how they show sororities: portraying the usual "bitchy, stuck up, stupid" sorority life that we've come to expect from the media.
Part of me feels upset that it's just another portrayal from outside of the Greek community that is going to add to the negative stigma we've already got, but part of me wants to give it a chance and hope that it will actually do some good...

Soliloquy 07-10-2007 11:38 PM

Oh! Another big plus, even if she plays the foil to Casey on this show, the new "it" girl- Rebecca is Pakistani.

That greatly pleases me. She was probably one of the better actresses during that whole show!

Axid angel 07-11-2007 04:43 AM

i totally don't want to watch the next episode, but i must find out what casey does to that girl who is sleeping with her boyfriend.

She'll make her pillows and stuff because she'll wind up as her big. Zeta Beta Zeta: the best representation of a sorority ever....almost as good as Kappas and Omegas are for us guys.

CarolinaCutie 07-12-2007 11:46 AM

Of course I'm being invited to multiple Facebook groups encouraging Greeks to boycott this show. I COULD tell them how I think it's funny and how they should get a sense of humor, but I think I'll just keep my mouth shut and keep watching.

sunnydebs 07-13-2007 10:37 PM

I caught the show tonight on regular ABC. It looks like they'll be playing it on Mondays on ABC family and the following Fridays on ABC. So for anyone without cable, you can watch too, just a bit later. :)

Portrayed fraternities in a more positive way?? It showed us as a bunch of drunk, partying, idiots who cheat on our girlfriends, are closet cases, haze, and insensitive louts.

The members of my chapter would never.....wait, Ricky did cheat on his girlfriend with her sorority sister.

Well, the Tekes on my campus would never.....wait, there were those rumors about Jon and Glenn.

Okay, the Sig Eps at ASU would never....oh, I almost forgot, they lost their charter for hazing and then (alledgedly) burned down their house so no one else could have it.

The Pikes would never.....yeah, they were known as the Country Club boys.

Never mind.

ROFL

Soliloquy 07-14-2007 01:38 AM

http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...ad.php?t=88630

And it has begun.

I know the OP was just trying to find out information, so I'm not purposely flaming him/her... but I just find the reference to be funny. Quite funny actually

Axid angel 07-14-2007 03:33 AM

you know what would be really scary? if some of the writers wanted to do research about greek life and were lurking around this site right now.

I just saw the show last night and I was thinking the same thing. Dude's answer to "why are you rushing?" at the Omega Chi house was too generic for me. Why did everyone look around like whoa? LOL!

Lady Pi Phi 07-14-2007 07:23 AM

I caught 5 minutes of this show and quickly turned it off. It's one of the worst shows I've ever seen.

The writing is awful. There is no originality. The writers used every cliche and stereotype within the first 5 minutes. What were they going to do for the rest of the show? Plus the acting was terrible.

I don't think this show is going to last. It's not a train wrck. It's just bad TV.

ASUADPi 07-14-2007 10:41 AM

The greek references and the absurdity of what they had greeks doing pissed me off.
The storyline between the brother and sister I thought was kind of interesting, I just didn't expect it to be resolved, semi-resolved by the end of the episode. She was a typical older sister, not wanting your brother around. I felt that exact same way, albeit, in high school. I totally understand the annoyance of having your little brother come around and invade in your "turf".
I found some of the storylines interesting, hated the greek references, but my roommate was like 'take it with a grain of salt'. Because let's face it, NO ONE wants to do a show on the reality of greek life. Yes, there would be some drama, but the reality is I think people would say "god their boring" and that doesn't make good television.

SoCalGirl 07-14-2007 10:53 AM

The ABC airing was heavily edited! I enjoyed the cable version better.

dvs-dz 07-14-2007 12:51 PM

I just noticed three scenes deleted (and they were also deleted on the rerun on ABC Family last night):
1. Rusty entering the sorority house
2. The Kappas deciding to give Rusty a bid
3. Casey and Evan having dinner together

I'm assuming the cuts were made for additional commercial time. I imagine ABC was able to sell more ads for the show between Monday night and Friday night.

I think one of my favorite parts was the Kappa bid written on a post-it!

They also cut the beginning scene at the ZBZ house where you assume rush has started--where a PNM and a active start fighting---but then you find out that they are both actives and they were just doing a rush skit. I was kinda sad they left that part out.

Ok, so the acting is bad, but I kinda like the show. Yes it does play into stereotypes, but we also have to remember there are chapters of sororities who live up to the stereotypes, so its not 100% inaccurate.

SoCalGirl 07-14-2007 03:41 PM

They also cut the part in the bathroom where the Senator's daughter says she's looking for her rape whistle. I'm sure a lot was edited for content and some for time but I don't think they edited it well. The scene where Casey and Evan have dinner is pretty important.

preciousjeni 07-14-2007 11:45 PM

I joined that virtualrush.com site to see what the fuss was about. My screenname is "aridiculousshow" so uh why all these lil kids "digging me" and asking me to vote for them? Is it not apparent that I believe it is A RIDICULOUS SHOW?? Hmmm... :p I love kids!

DeltAlum 07-15-2007 02:04 AM

Just like real life.

KatieKate1244 07-15-2007 05:11 PM

I actually enjoyed it. And if anyone is stupid enough to believe that's what Greek Life is really like, well, they'll probably be eaten alive in the rush process. Their fault.

JaimeNicole 07-15-2007 10:54 PM

Greek on iTunes

This thread is getting really long and have only been skimming parts of it so I'm sorry if this has already been said, but I just wanted to let everyone know that if you didn't watch the 1st episode and want to know what the hype is all about, the pilot episode is available for FREE on iTunes.

ROFL if you think a show is not going to last because of these things you must have been living under a rock for the past 5 years. Look at 99% of other shows on every channel...

Well I apologize for having an opinion. I didn't realize that I needed your permission to have one.

There are a lot of shows that are really good but only last one season. There are a lot of crappy shows that stay on the air forever. I just happen to think this one won't last.

But perhaps I'll just go and hid out under my rug until you tell me it's safe to come out.

This might be a stupid question...but what channel is the cable version on? Are you talking about ABC v. ABC Family? Or ABC Family v. another channel? I watched it on ABC Family and so I'm guessing that was the one that was heavily edited because I don't remember any of the scenes you're talking about and I want to see them!

She's talking about ABC vs ABC Family. The version that was heavily edited was the ABC version.
