Wow sounds like you are have an amazing time with such a wonderful attitude!! I know how it is when you walk into a room and everyone is clapping, singing, cheering, and throwing up hand signs--its very, very catchy and you want to start dancing along too!!!! But I'm really glad you are having such an amazing time and can't wait to hear more:)

Helloooo all!
Just wanted to pop in and say that open house rounds are officially OVER and tomorrow the first rounds start. I'm wayyy too exhausted to recap the night, but it was absolutely wonderful; I was kind of hoping I wouldn't like any of the sororities tonight so that my decisions on ranking them would be a lot easier, but I ended up loving just about every single one (which, in the end, still made my decisions a lot easier!)

We had to rank our top 14 houses, and even though before tonight I didn't think that there was any way I could decide, everything truely fit into place by the end of the night. There are about seven houses that I'm in love with and seven that I want to give another shot at. Even my bottom six were great chapters with wonderful women, and to tell the truth, I wouldn't be upset if I saw some of them on my invite list tomorrow.

Parties start at 6:00 tomorrow, so send good energies towards Happy Valley!

Haha, yup! I was kind of on an adrenaline kick the first two nights and wanted to organize my thoughts with some quick summaries, but tonight, I just want to relax and get ready for tomorrow.

SigKapSweetie 10-27-2006 08:56 AM

Petals,

I know others have said it, but it's worth repeating: you have a fantastic attitude! I can't wait to see where it takes you. :)

Drolefille 10-27-2006 09:26 AM

Petals, I've noticed that it seems to fall into some sort of place for many PNMs. It worked for me that I wanted to cut the exact number of chapters that I had to each night. Keep having a blast!

LouisaMay 10-27-2006 11:23 AM

Petals, I hope you had a nice relaxing evening. I feel tired just imagining what you are going through. I'm glad that you are feeling excited!

Hugs!!

twinkle555 10-27-2006 11:39 AM

yay!! i hope you get all your top houses!! go petals!!!

First rounds are officially over!

Things went pretty well and I’m super excited to see where I’m going back for second rounds tomorrow. When I got my invites back yesterday, all but one sorority were in my top 14. Today, I was excited to see that 7 of the 9 sororities I was going back to were also in my top 14. Compared to some other girls, I made out pretty well. It seemed like there were quite a few PNMs that got more of their least favorite houses than the ones they ranked higher, and some didn’t even get a full schedule of 14 houses. In the end, I was still really happy with my schedule and was invited back to:

Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Xi Delta
Chi Omega
Delta Gamma
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Sigma Delta Tau
Sigma Kappa
Zeta Tau Alpha

I was disappointed that 3 or 4 groups in particular didn’t invite me back, as I really had some great conversations with the girls that I spoke with. C’est la vie, though, as I’m in love with some of the chapters I visited today and yesterday! So now comes the fun part… names :). Since this rush has been nothing but cold, rain, wind, and typical crazy Pennsylvania weather, I think I have to go with a “places I wish Penn State had a branch campus at” theme.

Barbados – I just really didn’t feel much of a connection with this one. I could probably have fun going out with these girls, but all I could think about was when the party would end.
Cancun- Another so-so house. They were fun and I would love to be friends with the girls I’ve talked to, I just don’t see myself as a part of the whole group.
Bahamas – I had a GREAT time at this suite; I just feel comfortable here no matter who I talk to.
Fiji – This sorority was a lot of fun and the girls seem pretty down to earth, but there was just no spark between the girls I talked to and me.
Miami – This was another early favorite of mine, and I’m still really hoping I get to go back! Though the girls I talked to this time weren’t as energetic and outgoing as the ones I spoke to during open house, I still had a lot of fun and felt super comfortable here.
Hawaii – I LOVE this group! They were one of the ones I really liked during open houses, too, and I only like them more after first rounds. They’re incredibly bubbly and fun, and because of that, it seems as though they’re a favorite of everyone going through recruitment. At the same time, I really had some great conversations here and would be pretty disappointed if I didn’t get invited back.
Maui – This group sort of surprised me with an invite back, but the girls I’ve spoken with seem very genuine and poised. It’s definitely one of the favorite sororities of the girls in my Pi Chi group, and I still want to see more of them before I decide anything.
Acapulco – I can’t really get a feel for this group; it’s kind of lukewarm in my book. In one sense, I really want to see more of what they’re all about because there are a bunch of cool girls here, but on the other hand, after two rounds I still haven’t felt much of a connection to this sorority.
Jamaica – I originally cut this group but still got an invite back. It was definitely a better time than during open houses, but at the same time, I almost feel like they’re a little bit more about partying than I’m up for. They obviously have a really strong bond amongst the sisters, though, which is one of the major reasons I want to join a sorority, so I’m giving them another chance.
Puerto Rico – I know I shouldn’t set my heart on a particular sorority this early, but I seriously LOVE this group! They’re all really mature and I actually had some conversations beyond the typical small talk that made me feel confident that these girls take school just as seriously as their sorority. Their philanthropy is also very relevant to my major, which really makes me excited. I’m trying my best not to get too attached, but at the same time, I’ll be SO happy if they’re on my invite list tomorrow!
Bermuda – This was my least favorite house during first rounds. It was the second to last party, so naturally everyone was totally drained, but my rusher didn’t even talk to me for half of the party and just sort of sat there! It was just a really disorganized situation.
Aruba – I really like this chapter… they’re so real and down to earth and, most importantly, don’t take themselves too seriously. I definitely want to see more of them.
Virgin islands – This sorority was so-so; I’m hoping if I go back that they’ll really shine, as I know they’re a great group, but so far nothing’s really sparked a connection with me.
St. Lucia – I originally cut this house, but going back, I think I want to give them another shot. The girls care SO much about their philanthropy, which I also love, and they just seem like a really neat bunch overall.

Sorry if any of my comments don’t seem as optimistic as I’ve usually been—my attitude hasn’t really changed, I’m just absolutely beat from 6 hours straight of recruitment and want to spit out my thoughts to organize and make sense of everything!

I also just want to say that all of the groups here really were great, each in their own ways. I swear I’m not a Pollyanna, but really, I’m excited to see where I’m going because each sorority is so unique that I’m sure there’s one for me somewhere in the mix.

With that, here’s how I ranked everything tonight. Tomorrow we can go back to up to 8.

1. Puerto Rico
2. Hawaii
3. Bahamas
4. Miami
5. Aruba
6. Maui
7. St. Lucia
8. Jamaica
--------------------
9. Barbados
10. Acapulco
11. Bermuda
12. Fiji
13. Cancun
14. Virgin Islands

Finally, I just wanted to mention that if anyone wants to know anything more specific about what’s going on, feel free to PM me. I’m just trying to refrain from posting too much information publicly.

Thanks for the support, everyone!

BabyPiNK_FL 10-29-2006 12:44 AM

Aww, I'm rooting for Jamaica (my mom is from there!) and Miami (because I'm from there!)

blackngoldengrl 10-29-2006 12:56 AM

Glad to see things are going well, I know who my favorite is ;)...but if I'm picking a warm tropical destination, I'll pick Hawaii, since I hope to go there someday.
Get some rest!

Drolefille 10-29-2006 11:55 AM

Yay SK is still on the list... but I'm going to root for... Puerto Rico because you like it so much :D

It's ok to get your heart set on one, just a little, whether the group cuts you or not, your mind (and heart) may change throughout the evening. YAY for you!

SigKapSweetie 10-29-2006 12:31 PM

Well, I'm biased, of course...:p

I think I'll root for Hawaii; one of my Beta Tau sisters just moved there with her hubby, who's in the Navy and is currently deployed on a sub. She's got lots of pictures of the beaches there, and they're gorgeous!

honeychile 10-29-2006 12:52 PM

I know sisters at three of your top fourteen! Wishing you a Panhellenic good luck on getting Puerto Rico or Hawaii (although I do hope they're in my three, too! :D )

It seems that I have cousins going through Recruitment at PSU, too - or at least, according to my mother. I know I won't hear until the end, but I just don't know HOW y'all can keep track of every house!!

ETA: As a genealogist, I feel the need to say that my cousins would be my second cousins, once removed. My first cousins' children are my age!

How do you know this? Did you PM her to find out? :)

I'll root for Hawaii just b/c I think it's beautiful there & want desperately to go back soon.

YAY! Alpha Phi is on the list, so i'm secretly hoping they are in your top 3, but just follow your heart.

I'm gonna root for your Puerto Rico and (since everyone is picking Hawaii) i'll pick the Bahamas!! lol

Yay! SDT is still on the list. *crosses fingers*

I love the names you went with...I'd love to be any of those places right now.

I'm glad you had a good time, and good luck!

Lots of luck for the next round!

petals 10-29-2006 10:37 PM

Hello all!

Today was sort of a mixed blessing; I’m really starting to see what they mean when they say that you’ll end up where you’re meant to be. Here’s where I was invited back to for round 2:

---Today---
Bahamas
Fiji
Acapulco
Maui
St. Lucia

---Tomorrow---
Virgin Islands
Miami
Barbados

I was really disappointed that Puerto Rico and Hawaii weren’t on my list, as I’d had wonderful conversations with quite a few sisters there and was most excited to see them today. Luckily, I have more of a “favorite four” than just a single favorite to set my heart on, two of which were on my schedule! These would be the Bahamas and Miami, not to mention that I didn’t dislike any of the other houses on my schedule either, so I’m excited to get to know them better. Today, for example, I was really surprised to be invited back to Maui and St. Lucia, but after their skits (Round 2 = Skit Round) I’m IN LOVE with these ladies! Onto the recap…

First I went to Fiji, which wasn’t great, but wasn’t bad. I think I’ve mentioned before that I can definitely see myself as friends with these girls, but I’m not so sure about sisters—there just isn’t much of a spark there. Conversation was kind of slow.

Next up was St. Lucia, who had a really funny skit that showed these girls are able to make fun of themselves and just have a good time doing the silliest things together. That’s really important to me with any friends of mine, let alone a sorority, so while St. Lucia had been sort of so-so before, I’d definitely put them in my top 3! I’m also loving this round because sisters are remembering my name and our conversations (which I find AMAZING after meeting so many people!), so it definitely feels great to walk into a room and actually recognize some people that recognize you!

My next visit was to Maui, which depending on how Miami goes tomorrow, might just end up being my number one choice. I was surprised to be invited back here for first rounds and really REALLY surprised to go back for second rounds—but definitely not in a bad way! This was the funniest skit of the day; these typically poised, classy sorority girls were having so much fun being total goofballs in front of a huge crowd, and I LOVED it. It really made me respect them so much more!

After Maui I stopped at Acapulco, which I’d been lukewarm about before, but had a great time at tonight. I didn’t have as much of a connection here as I did with Maui or St. Lucia, but I’m not totally discounting these girls either.

Last up was the Bahamas, one of my favorites from first rounds. What I like about this sorority is that they’re super easy to talk to and just hang out with. They’re REAL girls, not your typical sorority sterotype, and they obviously love their organization and do a lot of great things with it.

I’m really excited for tomorrow as well; tonight was kind of long but nothing compares to nine hours of recruitment like yesterday. While my decisions on who to cut and how to rank have been pretty easy until now, if my opinions change about tomorrow’s sororities like they did for today’s, I’ll definitely have my work cut out for me.

epchick 10-29-2006 10:46 PM

YAY bahamas is still in the running!!!!

I'm glad that you had an awesome time at Maui....and your attitude is superb!! I applaud you for that :D

aephi alum 10-29-2006 11:35 PM

Don't let the cuts get you down. If I understand your system correctly, you still have a full schedule, and you're going back to some of your favorites.

Keep an open mind, and keep plowing forward. Have fun!

petals 10-29-2006 11:49 PM

Right, I forgot to mention that I do have a full schedule. This was the first day that I saw girls drop out on the spot after getting their schedules back because they were only invited back to 3 or 4 houses that they didn't really enjoy. My favorite girl in our Pi Chi group was one of them, unfortunately. There were also a lot of tears, so I was counting my blessings when I got my schedule back.

Drolefille 10-30-2006 01:43 AM

Congrats on the full schedule, I'll now be changing my vote to.... St. Lucia.. because I like girls who can just be silly :D

Keep up the good spirits!

adpiucf 10-30-2006 11:47 AM

It sounds like you are having a great recruitment at PSU! Coming into prefs, continue to keep an open mind. As you go to rank your final choices keep that open mind to the possibility of being a member of a few "top choices."

Don't rank a chapter you truly could not see yourself as a member of, but also remember that all of the PSU sororities include members from various backgrounds, majors and interests-- you can certainly find your niche in a group of 50+ women and you need to remember, too, that you aren't going to like all 50 all of the time no matter which chapter you may join!! ;)

Keep a "Top 3" list in the running and remember that while the chapter you join become your "sisters," you can be friends with many "sisters" and other chapters, as well! This is your opportunity not only to join a sorority, but also the Greek Community.

Have a wonderful time and congrats on so many great invites and your positive and down-to-earth maturity!

Buttonz 10-30-2006 11:50 AM

I'm glad your having a great time!

Congratso n the full schedule :)

pinkyphimu 10-30-2006 05:43 PM

i think your naming system is the best i have ever seen. i am also from pa...and now i am here in new england, so i understand the crappy weather! have fun!!

twinkle555 10-30-2006 08:58 PM

congrats on the full schedule :) i cant wait to see what tomorrow brings!

petals 10-30-2006 11:14 PM

Hi guyyyys,
Tonight was great—I feel SO confident in the way I ranked everyone for prefs. I visited the Virgin Islands, Barbados, and Miami.

First I went to the Virgin Islands, which I had some ties to going in to recruitment. Luckily, I’ve been picking what’s right for me and not my friends, though, so it feels good to go back because I want to be there. Tonight was fun, and it’s always easy to talk to the girls here like I do with my friends back home, but at the same time I’m just not feeling a spark like at some of the other houses.

Next up was Barbados, which although they had a really great skit, it felt like the girls I talked to were bored or didn’t want to be there talking to me. Even when I flipped the conversation and asked about them, they didn’t get excited. I look at it as a blessing in disguise, though, because it made me realize that this isn’t the place for me.

Last was Miami, one of my favorites from open houses and first rounds. I talked to three girls here, two of which were WONDERFUL and I could have gone on talking to for hours, but the third (like at Barbados) just wasn’t really into the conversation. Even when she would get excited if we had something in common or something, she wouldn’t look at me! It was really bizarre, but I still love this place.

With that ends second rounds! Here’s how I ranked everyone for prefs, where we can go back to up to 3:

Maui
St. Lucia
Miami
---------------
Bahamas
Acapulco
Virgin Islands
Fiji
Barbados

We have tomorrow off (for Halloween) which = pref dress shopping time for me. Thanks for all of the support, everyone!

EGAOPi 10-31-2006 01:31 AM

I'm so glad that you've felt close connections with several sororities and that things are going so well. You definitely have a great attitude about recruitment. Happy Halloween and keep us posted--can't wait to hear about prefs!

Hi Petals! I am so happy you are having an amazing time and you are making some great comments about your feelings, etc., about each chapter. Have fun and good luck dress shopping! I hope you find some smashing sales and can also pick up some shoes...LOL (I buy outfits to go with shoes so I have something for shoes I must share with others :D ).

Stay warm!! It is freezing here on the West Coast!

I'm glad your having a good time, good luck!

I'm sooo wondering if SDT is still there...must wait till it's over lol!

PSUSigKap 10-31-2006 09:38 AM

Something to keep in mind during prefs. . .look around the room at the other pnm's. they're the ones who will be in your new member class, and most likely the ones who you will be closest to in the sorority. don't not go to a sorority because of the potential new member class, but keep in mind some of these women will be your sisters too. that might also help in your decision if you have 3 fabulous prefs and you don't want to be there until christmas deciding! ;) i've had a great time reading your thread! good luck for the rest of recruitment.

FSUZeta 10-31-2006 10:02 AM

sage advice from psusigkap!!

best wishes that you find the perfect pref. dress and that you get all three of your top choices for prefs!! happy halloween!!

LouisaMay 10-31-2006 10:10 AM

Good luck, Petals!!! I hope that you find a dress that makes you feel wonderful:) I can't wait to hear how things go.

Hugs,

adpiucf 10-31-2006 10:57 AM

Have fun dress shopping! I know recruitment is stressful, but I think taking the day off to relax, study and shop will give you some perspective on the process and the ability to see the big picture. You'll probably run into a lot of PNMs today who are out shopping, too! :)

Enjoy your day off and keep in mind that prefs is the sororities' last chance to sell you on joining their organization. The chapters who have invited you to prefs have taken a special interest in you and want to share with you what has made them pledge their loyalty to their own sororities. It won't be strange to see sisters or even PNM's shed a tear at a prefs event, which includes a ceremony that usually involves singing and testimonials about sisterhood. You will likely be paired with someone you have met earlier in the week. Definitely look around at the PNMs at this event, as you've likely seen them throughout recruitment and maybe spoken to some. You'll be spending a lot of time with some of these women, as well as those already in the chapter. Remember, you don't have to love everyone all of the time, but you should feel like you can be yourself around them without having to put on an act to feel like you're part of the group!

As with the past few days, look for a few chapters you would be happy at-- remember that not only are you joining a sorority, but also becoming part of the PSU Greek community where you will have sorority sisters and "Panhellenic Sisters" within the Greek community. While you will share a special bond with your chapter sisters, there's no limit or rule saying you can't be friends with ladies from other chapters or unaffiliated women!!!

Don't rank a chapter on your final bid card if you truly couldn't see yourself enjoying spending time with them and wearing their letters, but be open to the possiblity of membership in more than just one sorority if you truly want to be a member of the Greek community and ensure that you have maximized your options. If you can only see yourself as a member of one sorority and would rather not be Greek at all if you can't be in that one, than certainly make that choice and don't let anyone tell you that you must list more choices on your Bid Card! This decision is yours-- don't allow anyone to influence you unduly. Make the choices you feel most comfortable making.

Enjoy today's shopping adventure and Happy Halloween!

Waiting not-so-patiently to hear news on how many prefs she will attend and some detail on her shopping trip and the special dress she purchased!

its been interesting reading this. I'm in a service sorority so its interesting to me to see what goes on in the social sororities. I spent 3 years at Arizona State, and they have 13 sororities (panhellenic sororities), and they have more students than Penn State, which is just something I find weird/interesting. I guess it just all depends on what the student population is like! I do want to point out that my sorority, Omega Phi Alpha, absorbed one of Penn State's locals, Theta Alpha Pi, so they are now our Alpha Theta chapter, named that in honor of their history!

Good luck and have fun with prefs!
