No point in not sending your 15 year old to backpack across Europe with a buddy for Spring Break. It's time for them to learn responsibility while the adults sit at home hoping for the best. Right.

I wouldn't consider it bad parenting to let kids go on spring breaks when they're in high school. This is not to say my parents would allow it, but we also only got a 3 or 4 day spring break so it totally eliminated the possibility.

Didn't anyone ever go on senior week/beack week? I'm from Maryland so we went to Ocean City, about 3-4 hours from my house, but I do know people who went to Cancun. I was only 17 (like some of the kids on laguna) and my parents let me go off with my friends for a week.

Mmmm no. My mother wouldn't even let me sleep over a friend's house if a parent wasn't there.

One time I lied about sleeping over a friend's house, but went to stay with my then-BF whose parents were out of town. Somehow my mom found out and sent the cops over to take me home.

She's wasn't uber strict either, because I never did have a curfew -- but she made it clear that while I was still a minor, I couldn't go off on my own anywhere.
At that time I hated her for what she did, but looking back her rule did make a lot of sense.

I don't know ANYONE in my high school that went on trips like that during spring break....and our spring break was a week long.

I guess maybe its because my city is on the US/Mexico border, so we (not me...but everyone else lol) used to go across the border to drink/party/do whatever, and then come back.

But I think it is absolutely wrong for parents to let their 16/17 year olds go out to another country with some friends. Hell to the no! I'm absolutely positive that my mother wouldn't. Like OTW's mom, she wouldn't even let me spend the night over at a friends (my mom was uber strict).

I don't want to be so strict with my children, but i'll be stict enough to know that they aren't going 1,000-2,000 miles to a different country, just so that they can hook up/shag/ and drink til they drown. I don't even care how many chaperones there are. Chaperones can't be everywhere all the time.

IF there were chaperones (which we werent made aware of) I doubt they really watched them. I sure as hell wouldn't want my daughter sleeping with all be boys and being shit-faced drunk. No way in H-E-double hockey sticks!!

While not really a senior week/beach week, but everyone always rented houses on the Cape for prom weekend. I can't think of anyone whose parents didn't allow them to go. I also know of people who went to Cancun or Florida for spring break. It was definitely common where I'm from.

Dear Jessica,

You are out of high school yet you can't quite seem to shake the drama factor. Stay away from Laguna and hopefully you'll learn how to grow up!

Signed,
OTW

SRSLY, as much as I hate to admit it...Cameron seemed like he was the more mature one this time around.

I hope Derek and Tessa work out, but I really can't see that happening unless he learns how to defend himself and his girl to his friends. Speaking of "friends"...what kind of friends eat and run? I can't wait until Kyndra gets a taste of the real world. That shit might fly in Laguna, but elsewhere she'd get a major ass crackin'.

I wonder what'll happen to Raquel and Alex next week? She's such a loyal friend and so not the drama queen -- it'd suck if she had to go through crap next week.

How is that bad parenting? We were a smart group of girls. We didn't leave the resort, we were always in pairs, and none of us let another go off alone with anyone. We were all educated about the dangers of Spring Break and actually LISTENED to the warnings and to advice our travel agent gave us. We kept in touch with our parents every day. I don't see the difference in going on a senior spring break when the next year people go on college spring break.

When I first got my driver's license, my mom told me that she had no doubt that I was a safe and cautious driver. It was all the bad people out there that could harm me that she was worried about.

Applying that to letting kids go off on their own vacations, I don't see how any parent in their right mind could do such a thing. Unfortunate things can happen to you no matter how much you play it smart.

I have already answered that question in this thread. ;) To add to my explanation, teenagers and young adults have a higher victimization rate for violent crimes and that has to do with their routine activities that are more conducive to victimization (as well as perpetrating certain offenses at a higher rate). So an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure until my child is 18 or older. Then he or she won't need an adult chaperone for such trips.

Not every college student goes on spring break with friends. But the difference is that these are 18+ year olds and they are now legally held accountable for their craziness (or lack thereof). Until my child is legally capable of living/being on his or her own and financially capable of paying for his or her own stuff, my opinion counts a whoooole helluva lot.

It's funny because my mom always said "all of this will make sense once you have a child of your own." How odd that I came to my senses and I'm nowhere near having kids yet.

What gets me are these parents who PAY for these unchaperoned vacations. But that's for a whole 'nother thread. ;)

Good topic. The invisible GC poll has decided that OTW should start a new thread so we can let the OC crew have theirs back. :)

Why is it that parents say that (about the driving). My mom says EXACTLY (even pretty much word for word) what OTW's mom said!

DSTCHAOS 10-19-2006 12:05 PM

Last night's episode reminded me of how childish and FUGLY Cameron is. Jessica is a lame for letting that little boy play her like that.

I cringe at the thought of high school students acting like "married couples" like Rocky and that dude said they acted like. LOL...what the hell was she pressuring him to do? They're high schoolers!!! And if she knew she was pressuring him too much...and acting a little crazy...why didn't she stop herself?! Why did she have to wait for isht to hit the fan and then promise she'll change for him?

Unregistered- 10-20-2006 09:32 PM

Watching Laguna makes me so happy that I never had to go through that drama in HS.

I had two "serious" BFs (for HS anyway) and I dated, but I never had that kind of drama.

I couldn't help but feel sorry for Raquel, though. WTF was Alex doing asking those girls for their phone numbers right in front of her? He doesn't even go to their school, right?

Still patiently waiting for Kyndra, Cami, et.al. to get majorly screwed over.

DSTCHAOS 10-20-2006 09:52 PM

I've decided that Cami is right: Tessa is like a wet rag. No personality...no "umph!!!"

Rocky's the one with personality and, when Tessa's in the room, the room doesn't light up until Rocky walks in.

epchick 10-23-2006 02:10 AM

I'm sooo happy that MTV is putting full LB episodes on there...now I finally get to watch what you all are talking about :)

HBADPi 10-23-2006 12:27 PM

Out of sheer boredom I watched a few of the episodes this past wkend and it was probably the most painful thing ever! Kyndra is not cute and her and Cami need to get over themselves. Hands down, this has to be the worst of the seasons.

WVU alpha phi 10-26-2006 04:59 PM

I was watching the show last night and I'm pretty sure I stopped being a Kyndra fan. When they were showing highlights from last week's episode they show Kyndra pretty much flat out making fun of Tessa to Derek. The thing I liked about Kristen was that she was bitchy but they never really showed her just blatantly being mean to LC.

Also, Kyndra's ex boyfriend.. showing up in Cabo next week on spring break? Why the hell is this kid 20 and in college and hanging out with high school juniors? If that doesn't prove he's a loser then I don't know what does.

I remember Kristen saying some rude things at parties when LC was around....like she'd talk really loud so LC would hear her or whatever. But yeah, I think those girls are over the top.

Tyler is nasty, I'm sorry, what 20 year old with a normal social life and/or sense of social boundaries dates a 16 year old??? I understand they met when he was still in high school, but she was 14 when they met and he was 17! It's just wrong. Then he goes on Spring Break with them? LOL That guy has LOSER written all over him. Granted, he's a loser who's parents have a very nice house, but a loser nonetheless.

I sort of just want to stick a carrot in his mouth to shut him up. Especially when he was talking about the price of his shirt and how much the ring he gave Kyndra was going to appreciate in value. Barf.

My goodness. I don't ever recall being that mean in high school.

Alex, you do not call your ex a slut just because she's not crying over you. Stop being delusional because SHE DOES NOT WANT TO GET BACK WITH YOU. I like how he totally was stood up by Rachel and Lexie at the club. I laughed when Breeana preetty much gave him the cold shoulder.

They really should have stopped Laguna after the Class of 2005 graduated. The Class of 2006 is NOTHING like the original.

They are trying SO HARD and that's what makes it so pathetic.

I guess Kyndra was supposed to be cast as "a Kristen" with a sidekick named Cami. Cameron was cast as "a Stephen." I guess Wet-Blank-Tessa and More-Fun-Rocky are supposed to be "LCs." Etc. and etc. When you have that type of formulaic drama, it's cheesy.

KDAngel 10-29-2006 03:32 PM

Alex looks like Stephen to me sometimes before they make it's obvious it's him (by zooming in and what not). Craziness.

DSTCHAOS 11-01-2006 11:11 PM

They showed the parents at Spring Break this time around.

Tyler and Kyndra's parents were the ones they showed/discussed so I guess they do have chaperones at least this season.

One of my "pledge" sisters went down to cabo this past April and saw the Laguna Beach people (although i dont know if its this season's cast or not). Although I dont know if its true...she did mention something about pouring drinks on them.

I think i might need to get some details from her ;)

So there was a new Laguna tonight? My DVR's set to record all new episodes on the channel, but I just checked my recorded list and...nothing!

I know that MTV shows repeats 293840298342 times, but I just like having it there and ready to watch!

Apparently MTV's doing a similar Laguna Beach-esque reality show in my neck of the woods. I'm not sure where they'd film it or what neighborhood they'd target because I can't think of any that's as affluent as LB. Plus, it's boring over here.

ETA: Nevermind, I found this: http://pccollecting.blogspot.com/200...tv-island.html -- they're filming on Maui. I already know what kind of idiots they'll showcase -- kids of 1960s/1970s hippies who never left. Not necessarily "Hawaiian" or local looking...but the bleached blond/blue eyed surfer type. Way to promote true Hawaii, MTV.

The article does state, however, that ratings have slipped...but the cast will be returning for a 4th (their senior year) season. Just grrrreat.

KDAngel 11-11-2006 06:02 PM

Even though the ratings may have slipped everyone keeps watching it, so what do you expect? Why get rid of a thing that's still making you a ton of money? Viacom's no idiot.

Rocky, stop being so damn intense. You are highschoolers. If Alex is acting distant then it's because you are both kids. It's really not that serious.

I bet you that the man that you think you love at 17 or 18 is not the man or even TYPE of man you will want to be associated with when you get older and more mature.
