It's been 10 minutes, hasn't it?

CAN'T. STOP. LAUGHING.

I'm sitting here alternating between doing real work and reading recruitment threads. BamaDad, thank you for the comic relief!!!!

And frankly, sometimes everyone gets so wiped out during the process that we all feel like skit!

that has to be one of the funniest things i have read in a long time! Good luck to your daughter!

Zillini 08-18-2006 04:35 AM

Thanks Bamadad for the unintentional giggle fit. :D I needed that.

Sister Zillini, being right in the "middle of the fray," so to speak, I bet you DID!:D

I just posted my daughter's Philanthropy Day's results on the Good Luck BamaDaughter thread (selected for 8 houses today). Do you normally make additional posts to different threads with updates, or kind of stick to one thread with everything. I'm kind of a dinosaur who is quite new to chat room formats.

Usually we tend to stick to the same thread for the whole story, but since you started out in one and then got a thread created for your daughter's story specifically, it's certainly not a problem to post multiple times -- as long as you don't mind the extra typing. :D

BamaDad 08-18-2006 10:47 AM

I'm looking forward to southernyankee's posts since we are going through the agony of the wait simultaneously. Best of luck today, southernyankee....

Jill1228 08-19-2006 12:43 PM

Yeah thanks to BamaDad, I am cleaning coffee off my mother in law's computer screen and keyboard! :D

I think BamaDad rocks!

Ladies, I am so happy to know that my clumsy fingers brought you so much joy. When someone first told me I had a small typo via private message, I almost freaked out. I thought the moderators were going to kick me off for foul language, so I quickly posted a reply to let you all know it was an accident. With political correctness at an all time high for nearly every goof one can make, I didn't want you folks to think I was a dingaling. Right now, we are waiting for Preference Day results.

Oh that word wouldn't get you kicked off of GC! :)

southernyankee 08-19-2006 01:48 PM

Hey everyone...sorry for the delay...we have been doing some major damage control here. As you might have guessed, things are not going as well for my daughter as she had hoped they might. After 11 invites to philanthropy day, she had only 6 to skit night. Of those six, only 2 were her favorites. She was cut from several of her very favorites and a few of the ones that she really thought she could like.

She gathered herself together, and went to the parties. She was feeling alittle better as she thought they all went extremely well, especially at her favorites. But then this morning...she had only two parties for pref to return to. One is still one of her favorites, and the other is one that she is willing to try if offered a bid. She is very upset of course, and as we heard in a million other threads here on GC, with no apparent answer, cannot understand what happened.

Not much we can do about it. We prepared as well as anyone could and I suppose it could still work out. Not very optimistic at this point. With only two out of three prefs...she may get no bid at all. I am trying to be positive for her sake, but she is a realist if nothing else, and knows the odds are against her in getting her favorite one, or one at all for that matter.

Congrats to Bamadaughter and all the other girls who are having a great rush. This would include my daughter's roommate, who has had the perfect rush!

All good thoughts are really appreciated. Proudmom and Alum, thanks for all the support.

Oh...for those that are keeping track...Panthers and Giants are the two that are left. Giants being her first choice. Fingers crossed!

lsu_rosewhite 08-19-2006 01:56 PM

Southernyankee...I will keep you and your daughter in my prayers. I'm sending positive thoughts your way.

SIGKAP DAWG 08-19-2006 02:11 PM

Ditto to LSU!

BamaDad 08-19-2006 02:29 PM

Best of luck, southernyankee! But why are you so skeptical about receiving a bid when she has been invited back to 2 of 3 possible parties? I know I am a newcomer to the game, but it seems the odds are still favorable with two houses. Can anyone enlighten me? And, if by chance there were no bid issued, is there not still an excellent chance of getting picked up through the mechanisms you refer to as snaps or quota additions? After all, my own daughter has yet to get a bid - she may be an alternate candidate at the tail end of everyone's potential bid list today. I suppose it depends upon the number of alternates, or secondary choices, each sorority invites back above their quota.

AlphaFrog 08-19-2006 02:39 PM

With 2/3, she's got a more then fair chance of recieving a bid!! And, if she's willing to accept either house, MAKE SURE she does put both houses, or she could be disqualified from snap bidding and quota additions.

Good luck!:)

BamaDad 08-19-2006 02:53 PM

Does anyone know how many extras above quota that sororities invite back for Preference Day, in terms of numbers or percentages?

proudmom 08-19-2006 03:36 PM

Fingers are crossed, legs are crossed, arms are crossed, if there's any body parts left to cross (and there are a few sagging ones, LOL!!), the'yre crossed, too!

She still has one of her favorites, which is very good news. And one that she's willing to give a try - also very good news.

Sending good thoughts your way...

That all depends on the sorority's history and how they are doing this year. With the new release figures (which I think are being used at Alabama), a specialist from NPC works with the Greek Advisor and looks at how the sorority has performed in years past along with how they are doing this year. For instance, if a sorority has historically very high return rates and matches to quota very high on their bid list, they will be bringing back fewer women to Preference than other chapters whose numbers aren't quite as high. The number that I have been told is that chapters with historically high return rates will be bringing back 20% more than they will need to Preference. THIS DOESN'T MEAN 20% MORE THAN QUOTA. That tripped me up a bit when I was trained on the release figures!

Assume that quota is 50. Let's say that sorority AAA usually matches to 40 women from their first bid list and goes 10 down their second bid list before making quota. Therefore, what they "need" is 60 women on their bid lists to make quota (because 10 women from the first bid list chose a different sorority). If they are a chapter with high return rates on other nights and a high percentage of PNMs ranking them first, they will get to invite 20% more than this to preference. 60 women plus 20% = 72 invitations. Keep in mind that some PNMs might decline these invitations if they receive more invites than they are allowed to accept.

Perhaps sorority BBB has return rates that are a little lower and usually needs to go down farther on their bid list to match quota. The percentage of "extra" that they get to invite is higher. It is all very mathematical and is determined after lots of evaluation of years past. When I say that how the sorority is doing this year factors in as well, it is possible for chapters who are having an unusually good or unusually bad year to have their numbers adjusted. It is all monitored very closely to allow the maximum number of chapters to make quota and the maximum number of PNMs to be matched.

That said - I believe 2 invitations to Preference are fabulous! Especially when the PNM really really likes one and is positive about the other.

In all rush stats I've ever seen, most women that preference are placed somewhere.

Best of luck to your daughter, and my fingers are crossed for her!

Hey Southernyankee,
Alpha Chi Emily is right, if she goes to both pref parties and turns in her bid card ranking both, odds are VERY good that she will get a bid. No way to guarantee it, but she should get a bid. If not, she could consider COB (or COR, open recruitment, however they say it). Almost every group has new members who don't show, or decline a bid, or quit after the first week, and the sorority can fill those spots. She needs to keep that mind open!

Zillini 08-19-2006 11:48 PM

I agree whole heartedly agree with all the sentiments already offered. I hope and pray your daughter is not overly discouraged. I truly hope she made the most of both Pref parties she attended. It only takes one.

southernyankee 08-20-2006 12:49 PM

Thanks for all the good wishes! My daughter did enjoy both parties, and liked Panthers even more after pref. Her favorite is still the Giants, but would be happy with either! She said the girls made her feel very welcome and wanted...but she has felt that way before during this long week and then got cut! She feels her radar is off right now, so is just hoping for the best!

If she doesn't get a bid...she should hear by 1pm. If she does...bids are being handed out after 5pm.

Best of luck to your daughter!

ADPi Conniebama 08-20-2006 02:13 PM

Whew these SEC recruitments are aging me - I hope your daughter gets what she wants - 5:30 right? no phone call no phone call no phone call - ok it is 1:15 so if she didnt' get a phone call then we will hear the good news tonight

GOOD LUCK SOUTHERNYANKEE('s DAUGHTER)

BamaDad 08-20-2006 02:16 PM

My daughter thought they had until 2:30 PM CST to make the dreaded call. I hope she is wrong and southernyankee is on target. Best of luck again, southernyankee!

southernyankee 08-20-2006 04:58 PM

Well.....no dreaded phone call!!! We have a bid!

Bamadad, thank goodness I didn't get back on the computer and see your post about 2:30! I don't think my stomach could have taken that extra hour and a half! My daughter thought it was 1pm, but whichever...it in now almost 4pm, so I think we are safe! What a relief.

Is still anxious about which one she got...but is more for the fun of it now! Will love either one. Oh...and Bamadad...one of the two that my daughter has is one of the ones your daughter has! They could be sorority sisters!!!

Thanks again for all the good wishes...I will let you know the outcome when she remembers to call her parents in all the excitement!

P.S. My daughter called us at 12:30 to ask a question about doing laundry...and her dad and I almost had a heart attack thinking it was "the call"!

lsu_rosewhite 08-20-2006 05:11 PM

I just knew it...I am so happy for your daughter.

Job well done, southernyankee!

proudmom 08-20-2006 05:11 PM

I am very happy for you and your daughter and I'm equally impressed that she's happy no matter which one she gets a bid from (although I'll bet she's hoping a tiny bit more for one over the other). That shows a great maturity and open-mindedness that a few more PNMs could use!

I remember when my daughter when through and they brought her rho chi group together before bid distribution. She called to tell me that they had pulled 5 girls in to tell them they had not received any bid...and she wasn't one of the 5! It was as big a relief as I've ever had knowing she had her bid.

I cannot wait to see where she ends up! :)

carnation 08-20-2006 05:12 PM

LOL! My oldest got her bid and dashed off to the sorority house *without calling*! I was coming apart wondering if she was off upset somewhere and her dad finally suggested calling her top choice house and asking if there was a new member there by that name. Thank the Lord there was, I don't know how I would have played that one off!

Congratulations, all you Bama parents!:)

dgdramadawg 08-20-2006 05:14 PM

Hooray for southerndaughter!!!!!! Wherever she pledges, she will have the time of her life!!!

well...the verdict is in...

My daughter is sooo happy! She is usually not one to show her emotions much and trys to act like nothing is a very big deal, but not today. She is absolutely thrilled to be a...

Giant! She got her first choice. They went skipping,( and trust me, my daughter does NOT usually skip lol) to the.....

Pi Beta Phi house!!!

I am so thrilled that she got one of her very favorite houses, and all the drama and worry was, in the end...so worth it. I really believe what all the experienced GCer's always say..."she will end up where she is meant to be, and it only takes one!"

She couldn't be happier!

Waiting on Bamadad! Hope your daughter is as excited as mine!
