If a polygamist is legally married (secular), he is usually married to the first wife. He is married religiously to all of his wives. However, there was this one guy I saw interviewed who would divorce (secularly) each wife to legally marry the next. They all still lived together and whatnot but the guy wanted the new woman to feel special. Sometimes these people are on compounds and they don't recognize secular law anyway so nobody is legally married to anybody. That doesn't stop them from applying for government benefits like WIC. |
