Mike,
Congratulations on yet another great article. No need to thank me, though. As usual, I tend to doo little. (haha - couldn't resist) :) ZAX, Jono |
Jono. LOL!
Mike, another nice article and very interesting for cover collectors!:) I wish I had known "Pappy"! He was a Pip! Cheerio as they say!:D |
The October Cross & Crescent Is Posted!
Greetings,
Once again, the electronic Cross & Crescent magazine has been published on-line, on time, and as promised. The Dick Tracy article is a good read. I hope that the first part of my Theta Kappa Nu Ritual article is of interest to my fellow GCers. Part two of the article (November, 2006) will cover the staging, room layout, performance highlights, and basic concepts of the TKN Ritual. Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond Zeta Upsilon Zeta |
I like the TKN article.
When does Cole come out? |
Agree with John G about TKN article even though some got bent out of shape about secrets.
I enjoyed reading it and look forward the the second part next month. Cannot wait to read the Cole article as John is!:) Very Nice job Brother Mike! As always of course! |
I don't know why staff specifically asked Mike to write the TKN ritual article in the first place. It seemed odd to me.
What really has me mystified as an editor is the correction I made to the Dick Tracy article, changing "where they below" to "where they belong". But it still came out wrong! Regarding some of the TKN comments, some folks just don't realize that making a big deal out of it makes a big deal out of it. The less said, the better. ZAX, Jono |
The November Cross & Crescent Magazine is Available
Brothers,
The latest issue of the Cross & Crescent Magazine has been released as promised and on time for the past thirteen months. I think many of you will be very interested in the sidebar about the Theta Kappa Nu coat of arms. Enjoy! Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond Zeta-Upsilon Colony |
Great article Mike.

The OLD Electronic Cross & Crescent
I can't wait until it's referred to as the OLD electronic Cross & Crescent and we get back to a printed format.
There will probably be the same tired "features" of used-to-be Lambda Chi fat cats who line their pockets while doing little or nothing for the fraternity, but you can't have everything. Writing about true brothers who actually help the fraternity is apparently beyond the realm of possibility and the scope of the publication. If it weren't for Mike's articles and Chapter News, I wouldn't read it at all. Finally, what Bozo decided it would be a good idea to write a political piece a week before elections? And about a Republican, no less, as if they're not running scared enough as it is. At least the tag line is accurate: "Lambda Chi and politics have similarities." That's true. As evidenced by the Comments, both have their fair share of idiots. (I'm writing here instead of there just in case someone wants to get into a pissing contest. I don't want to see anything like that in my magazine. That's not what it's for, but unfortunately it's what it's become.) |
Jono,
I’ve got to push back (in a brotherly way) on the comment about the “used-to-be Lambda Chi fat cats who line their pockets while doing little or nothing for the fraternity,” and your desire for C&C articles about “true brothers who actually help the fraternity.” In my role (among others) as national chair of the Call to Lead Campaign, I have been all over the country meeting with these well-heeled brothers and seeking to get into their pockets. Not once have I been refused a meeting; not once have I been denied a donation. Of the hundreds who have donated to our Campaign, we have nearly ten brothers who have donated in excess of six figures each, some significantly in excess. The result is that we will be in a position well in advance of the 2007 Leadership Seminar to announce that we have achieved our goal of raising $6.5 million. These funds will be used to fund educational and leadership development programs, to train our alumni advisors, and to benefit individual chapters. Many of our brothers have “moved on” after graduation as the fraternity has taken a back seat to family, career, and other interests. But my travels have taught me that the flame of our Fraternity still burns, even in those who have had little or no actual involvement over the years. We all have different ways of helping, some with time, some with talent, some with treasure, and some with a combination of all three. Let’s not fail to acknowledge the significant contribution of those who write the big checks. Take my word for it - most of them wish they had the time to do more. In ZAX, Lynn Chipperfield |
Brother Lynn, this is an over view to be sure. Thank You for your insight.
But while you have information unknown to us as Brothers, there are still many questions unanswered. I think that is the question that stands out in our minds as Brothers. What is LXA doing with expantion? What is LXA doing with R M Chapters and why are they closed. We as Alums are very big contributors to the Foundation. Maybe you can pass along Our feelings while at times made in heat, We still wonder. Do not We desearve the posting of such subjects on C & C? Maybe, just maybe We as Alums can be of help. I have no doubt that We are If not the finest Fraternity, We are one of the best!:) You can say You heard it here it first!:D Stay tuned for further developments! |
Tom,
You can be assured that I pass on to other members of the GHZ the concerns expressed on GreekChat. I have found it is an excellent way to avoid the "inside the beltway" mentality that sometimes comes with being too wrapped up in finances and problem chapters, and not having enough exposure to the great things that are taking place at our chapters every day and the great brothers who make them happen. I also know that complaints, when they are posted, arise only from a deep affection for the Fraternity and a sincere to desire to make it better in every way. We're better off today when we were four years ago, and we'll be better still when we celebrate the Centennial in 2009. Sure we still have issues to be addressed, but I have never had more "hope for the future." Keep the faith. And keep up all the great work you're doing for Lambda-Chi Zeta and for our Fraternity. In ZAX, Lynn |
Lynn,
Of all the Lambda Chis I've known, there is no one I respect and admire more than you for all you've done - and continue to do - for the fraternity. You are at once down-to-earth and professional, a fine line that is not easy to walk. My comments, as brash as they were, were certainly not directed toward those alumni who contribute when asked, because it is obvious that their generosity is neither dependent upon an article written about them, nor in anticipation of one. Rather, it was in reference to those who are lauded despite the fact that they won't so much as agree to an interview, which begs the question why these stories are being written at all. Perhaps it is in the hopes that they will "come around", but there may be better ways of accomplishing the same objective, while leaving the magazine to its stated purpose. The Cross & Crescent, at least formerly, was subtitled "an educational journal" but in its pared down online version has become more of a "lifestlyes of the rich and famous". As one brother commented, as much could be found at IMDB, and I would add US News and World Report. It's not that I even object to such bios as much as the sheer lack of anything else that might possibly re-ignite the interest of alumni in a meaningful way. For example, each year brothers are awarded the Order of Merit. Their names are published, but no stories are written (other than videos shown at the General Assembly) delineating the conributions these brothers have made to the fraternity. Would it not be educational to share their experiences and dedication, perhaps inspiring others to increase their involvement in one way or another? Would a more well-rounded view of the Fraternity not make your job just a little easier? People are more likely to give if they can see exactly where their money is going and whom it is helping. A few years ago a feature was written from the viewpoints of three undergraduates about a chapter that succeeded in pulling itself up from the ashes. I found that story candid, compelling, educational, cautionary, and inspiring. It was "about something". Brothers should know that new alumni associations are being formed in half a dozen cities across the country. Just getting together for a few informal events can bring brothers who've been out of the loop back into the loop, which might benefit local chapters and the General Fraternity in the longer term. How about a feature story on both city and chapter alumni associations? As you mentioned, brothers help in different ways, some with time, talent, and treasure. Some of these brothers could be highlighted in the magazine, not because they crave recognition, but because what they do within the fraternity is interesting and relevant. These are just a few ideas. There are many more. In my opinion the Cross & Crescent currently lacks interest and imagination, and as our flagship publication, is a resource not being utilized to its full potential. As an editor (actually just a proof reader), I've seen unique stories reduced to a few sentences or shelved altogether. It's really a shame what our readers have missed. A more balanced mix of reporting would benefit everyone - undergraduates, alumni, and the General Fraternity alike. Writing about someone is fine (in fact you'd make a fine subject yourself), but let's see if staff can also write about something. Preferably something interesting that gives a broader view of who we are, with all our diversity of endeavor, with one common theme - Lambda Chi Alpha. Yours in ZAX, Jono |
Jono,
Thanks for your kind words and for your insightful post. I now understand your frustration, and I can say there are times when I agree. When the decision was made to go to a monthly online version of the C&C, Jason Pearce knew we would face a serious challenge in terms of content. Keeping a publication fresh and interesting month after month is difficult, particularly with everything else Jason and his team have on their plates every day. Nevertheless, with a lot of hard work and with the help of great brothers like Mike Raymond, I think they've done a bang-up job so far. I am particularly intrigued by your idea of a profile piece on the new members of the Order of Merit. There is much about these brothers that is inspiring, and they represent role models for all of us, alumni and undergraduate. John Gezelius, for example, inspires all of us with his continuing desire to give back, both on a local and an international level. Although I suspect Jason has already seen it (he lurks around GC just as I do!), I will paste your post into an email and send it to Jason. You have offered up some great ideas. All the best in ZAX, Lynn |
Brother Lynn, your are to modest to say the least for those of us who know you.
I also know some from IHQ who check G C and there is a lot of interesting information and comments here. This has replaced Digital on our web site. True, the Brothers, here on G C who are many and spread all over the world, have insights and things to say for the good and the bad of l what happens in LXA. If any as we know have seen and read many of the items and posts on G C, they can see what the Brotherhood of LXA really is. From Eastern Long Island to California, Minnesota to Texas, that is where we are located and do keep up on all of the items and problems of our Fraternity. As you know, we are all men and Brothers who have our own minds and ideas and profess them proudly to try and help our fellow Brothers. I am sure having worked with the New now, some what older IHQ people they also understand. Jason is under the gun for a Monthly C & C, but as I was told once, the main % of reading was about Zetas. Well, We as Brothers are always interestred about our Brothers from no matter where and the new ones who may join us. Granted the ones who of our Brothers have obtained stature, there are many of us who add to the Alumni Foundation with no matter how little or how much. We are important also. Maybe if Jason reads some of the posts, the C & C can be taylored more. I am sure it will take a while, and We are all patient. But if a change is needed, heed us. Not only awards (Order of Merit), but what about articles of the Grand High Zeta Members who give their time and effort for LXA.? They are the people who are important to us. Why, Because they are looking over the Brothers along with the IHQ Officers. |
December Issue of Cross & Crescent is On-line
Brothers,
The latest issue of the Electronic Cross & Crescent Magazine is on-line and on time since November, 2005. Commitment made and kept! I hope that you all enjoy this edition. Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond, Z-U Zeta |
Mike, reading your historical writings is always high on my list to read.
The history that you present is always an in depth essay of LXA of yore. The Warren A. Cole story is one that is very interesting as very little, many times, is unknown about Brother Cole. I cannot wait to read the second part of the Cole history and about the expedition. |
Did you notice in the chapter news, that a lot of alumni have posted comments expressing their views on how IHQ has kept them in the dark about operation standards of their former zetas that are now closed, and expressing a need for recolonization.

Electronic C&C: Thanks for Your Help!
Brothers,
The latest issue of the Electronic C&C was posted, as promised and on time, last night! I want to thank all of my fellow GChaters who helped in any way with the discovery of Warren A. Cole's "lost grave site." You humor, advice, research, encouragement, and work are much appreciated by me. John G., thank you for taking the time to actually find and document the grave site. I wish that I could have been there with you! I hope all of you like the Warren Cole article and the rest of the January Cross & Crescent magazine. Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond Class of 1967 Miami University Oxford, Ohio Zeta-Upsilon Zeta |
Was on C & C and now cannot get on it for some reason. PMed you to see if you could be of help!
No email advisory and cannot get on through LXA Site! Anyone else having problems? |
We can always do a summer tour!

Brother Raymond,
Great article on Cole's grave site. Somehow, I missed the December issue, so I just read Part 1 of the Cole story for the first time. While it is interesting that Cole's sons didn't join Lambda Chi Alpha, it isn't really surprising, is it? Since they would probably have been college age during the time when their father was sort of an "nonentity" at headquarters? It's my understanding that Warren Cole wasn't even listed as a founder or even a member during the time between 1920 and 1957. If a fraternity had given my dad the boot that way, deserved or not, I probably wouldn't join either. Regardless, great article. Do you have plans for a Part 3? In ZAX, Ottor |
Brother Mark yes, it is chilling to read.
Warren Cole was a hard driver and did what We think was his best in the days of yore as it were. As you mentioned, He was expulled, but later reinstated as he should have been but lost to History in LXA history. It was a concerted effort by four Brothers from all over the country, but Brothers from all over who were able to find where He was buried. It was an effort starting with Mike Raymond, suggestions by Jono, digging by me and the final result by John Gezeilzus in his trip. Yes, I beleive it was at the Denver GA in 1958 that he was reinstated. This is something that Brothers of LXA will be able to hold forever. I was having PC Problems and with the help of Jason Peirce on the phone yesterday, it is now cleared up! Who says IHQ is not there for us?:) Mike another outstanding job that you know I could not wait to read! Mark, there was a period of time that Coles name was not mentioned. Sad to say the least. Now, maybe We will be whole again! |
The March Issue of the C&C is On-Line
Brothers,
The March issue of the Cross & Crescent magazine is once again on-line. It has been issued on the 2nd day of the month, as promised and on time, since November, 2005! Seventeen issues in a row with 272 pages of information, colorful illustrations, reader feedback, and interactive links to other sources of information within most articles. The C&C magazine is also a great example of IHQ staff and volunteers working together to benefit our Brotherhood You might find the history section of some interest. I want to thank Jono for his valuable help in putting the history article together. Hats off to Tad, Chris, Jason, and the rest of the C&C team! Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond, Z-U Zeta |
In a word Brother Raymond as usual,
KOOL!:D |

Either give them back to the Zeta and save money or for Brothers to save them for their own history!:D They are around $10.00 to buy from IHQ if they will let you! Since I never was a Pledge old term I did not have one, but have one now for the History for My Zeta!:D |

If many have not realized it, Brother Raymond is moving on to other thing with in LXA and Brother Hren has taken over the reins of History of LXA History of LXA C & C! He is very capable of doing this as have know him many years now!!! He is a great Historian and leaves no stone unturned to give us a good article. While Mike will be missed, he has someone who will be super for us!:) |
Brother Jono,
That was an excellent article, and I am definitely looking forward to Part 2.......and thanks for throwing that picture of my pledge pin in there, it looked great snuggled right between the others, although from the looks of it, it was quite different in design. |
Brothers,
Thank you all. If I did a good job it's only because I was inspired by the best. Mike, glad to give you a break so you can concentrate better on your new "challenge". Tad also wrote some nice articles, especially the one about Rubottom, as did Lynn on the Call to Lead campaign. Chris did a great job with the photos. I'm already working on Part II and I must say it's driving me crazy. That little pin sure has a peculiar history - more than you'd think. So Trey, you recognized your pin, huh? Yep it's snuggled right in there. The last two on ebay were different from any others I'd seen. Let's hear it for ebay! In ZAX, Jono |
Wow if Jono says it is unique, then it must be a real treasure, for this Brother knows so much about our jewelry that I dont know how he is capable of remembering all of it.
Thanks for the compliment Jono :D |
The June C&C Magazine is Now On-Line!
Greetings,
I am happy to report that the new issue of the Cross & Crescent magazine is now available for your reading enjoyment! This is the 20th issue of the magazine published, as promised and on time, since November, 2005. A promised made and a promise kept by the Editors and volunteer staff of the magazine. All Lambda Chi content by an all Lambda Chi team.... You just have to read Jono's article about our Pledge/AM pin illustrated with many examples of the pin. This is the second part of his series on the Pledge/AM pin. What next, Jono? The article about Dabbs Greer is a good read too. An easy bit of Lambda Chi Trivia to ponder: what other two cast members of the Walton Mountain TV series were Lambda Chis? Oh, it was not John Boy! It takes a lot of work to put each 16 page issue of the magazine together. Please let your Brothers know that you appreciate their efforts. Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond, Z-U Zeta |
C & C is once again over the top for many reason!
Brother Jono Hren has taken the reins from docroc-Mike and done a tremendous Article about the History of LXA/TKN! While as An Electronic C of C, I have embaced of how I felt about it, I have come to fully endores it as a Monthly Update It is amazing to see how many People are Brothers! While I did not know them, they still cared about LXA!:D |
OK the new Cross and Crescent was up today (well yesterday :) ), and yet again another wonderful article by Brother Jono. I just love hearing about the history of our pledge pin and brotherhood badge.

The New Electronic C & C Is Available!
Brothers,
The October issue of the Cross & Crescent Magazine is now available. This is the 23rd issue of the magazine published as promised and on time. So far, a small team of staff members and volunteers have published 368 pages of fraternity related material in this format. Be sure to read Jono's excellent article in the history section of the C & C. There is also quite a bit of chapter news to read this time around. Enjoy.... Yours in ZAX, Mike Raymond, ZUZeta |
Onr of the first things that I read when it is put up.
Amazing of some of the Brothers that many of us do not know! Brother Hren's article was very inlightening. |
Color template
Hello all,
I believe I heard or read somewhere that someone or some committee in IHQ was revamping the color scheme for the CoA. Or something to this extent. Also, the article made it seem/implied that some detail was lost in the change towards this final version of the CoA; I assume they're working on this as well? Anyone have any info on this update of the CoA or perhaps I just imagined this? ZAX, Adam |
