This might be dangerous but if you hold a lighter/flame just at the end of ribbons, it melts it and seals it so it does not fray. Then you don't have to buy anything.

My ribbons aren't frayed.. but the rust from the safety pin has leeched in to the ribbons, so they have some brown spots on them.

I like to think they have character!

I took out my old lavalier from it's box (it was in a clear box with a blue sponge-like bottom) and the spongy-stuff melted in to the chain. It was a mess! I brought it in to a jeweler, and they were able to clean it up nicely.

We received our 14k gold lavaliers when we received our pledge ribbons. Does anybody else give those anymore? (This was over 20 years ago!)

Fraycheck is found in most sewing and crafts stores or in the sewing/crafts section of moost department stores. Costs around $1.75 for a 1.5 ounce bottle....you only need the tiniest amount.

I have a 14kt gold lavalier that I was given by my big sister when I initiated :) I still wear it (almost 25 years now ;)

We don't gt lavalieres when we are initiated, instead we get a neclace with the crest on it. 3/4 of the sororities on my campus do this.

Mine was a lavaliere with a crest on it.

It was engraved on the back with my initiation date as well.

I treasure it ;)

No, it's not hazing to give them. It becomes hazing when chapters start giving penalties or punishment for NOT wearing them (i.e. "Wear your ribbons 24/7 or you'll have to do 50 push ups"). I'm sure if they (the class) just decide on their own to wear them all the time that it should be no trouble, as long as it's made clear in the beginning that they're totally optional. I hope this clears things up for you.
But for us, if we're going to give out ribbons and tell members to wear them, it must be all of the members or none at all-- even if it's optional, it would still be considered hazing-- we can't segment out a section of our chapter for any activity (outside of what our international directors would deem a higher educational purpose -- and they must approve everything before it is put into action). So I think this is a policy for some sororities, but for others it would seen as hazing per international bylaws.

I do want to communicate that no direspect is intended, JocelynC-- I just want to clear up that any ADPi's reading this don't take this idea back to their chapters. It doesn't work for us.
