Same here - one of my roommates in college played the soundtrack in our room frequently, so when I heard about the movie, I was so excited to go see it. I did mention to one of the girls I went with that I *wish* I had seen the play before the movie, just so I knew what to expect (and that way I would've had Kleenex with me! :o)

I'd definitely go see it again, and it's a definite must buy when it comes out! :)

Xylochick216 11-24-2005 08:10 AM

I think I may have to see it again :D

And Roger was totally hot.

Jill1228 11-24-2005 01:24 PM

Roger is a total hottie!

Jesse and Taye looked pretty damn good too

I saw it opening day and the more that I think about it, the more I loved it. It really was just beautiful. Film critics are absolute idiots and I honestly don't know why the reviews have been so harsh. The performances were fabulous, the direction was beautiful and I thought they did an amazing job making it work as a movie. They really developed different storylines, characters and especially the relationships. Little things that I never really understood in the musical suddenly made so much more sense on screen.

Jesse L. Martin has one of the most unbelievable voices I've heard in a while. And a beautiful smile to boot.

sugar and spice 11-25-2005 06:15 AM

I saw it tonight and thought it was pretty good. They definitely did not butcher it, which is about as much as you can ask for when it comes to movie adaptations these days. That said, I usually start crying at Angel's death and sob straight through 'til the end of the show, and this time I only managed a good 15 minutes, so based on the tears alone, it was a little sub-par. ;)

That's pretty much how our son the wannabe Broadway star felt about it.

Of course he's a snob.

I'm sure you're not.

I can't believe you called your son a snob. That actually made me laugh. :)

ASUADPi 11-25-2005 10:04 PM

So I just got home from Rent and I have three words...

I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!

I thought the cast, director, screenwriter did a wonderful job incorporating the integrity of the play into the movie. And doing something like that is no easy task. And I've seen the play like six times, pretty much every time it's come to AZ I've seen it. I love the play. When I was watching the movie I kept thinking "man they are doing such a great job".

I also bawled my eyes out. OMG. Not that the theater was crowded, but you could hear the people crying.

The AZ Republic gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars. (This is coming from the critic who trashed Phantom because Rauol was singing instead of trying to escape  ). I have a feeling this guy has actually seen Rent so he has a general idea what the play is about unlike his review of Phantom (which is kind of dumb since Phantom has come to Phx like 8 times since 1995).

You should hear what he says!

Actually, he's very bright (National Merit, 4.0 through three years of college, etc.), but he does tend to see things his own way.

Can you believe it?

WhirlwindTNX 11-27-2005 06:36 PM

OMG!!!! It was amazing!!!

My only problem was during Will I Lose My Dignity...the leader of the round didn't have a strong enough voice.....btw wasn't he in Newsies?

I was so surprised to find this out, I had NO idea that he could sing! And I also agree on the beautiful smile, though none of the boys beat Roger in terms of hotness, WOW! :D

I loved the movie, I started crying right at the opening credits and didn't stop until the entire thing was over, but I'm also really lame like that. I don't think it can be compared to the stage production since they're really two totally different things, and I thought it was fabulous how well they adapted Rent into a movie, I was afraid they'd add a whole bunch of useless dialouge, but luckily they didn't!

I am a little upset that they didn't do all of "Goodbye Love", only like a small part of it, but I guess it's ok since it wouldn't have really fit in well anywhere I don't think. And I'm glad that they left "Contact" out too.

I will definitely be seeing it again and buying it when it eventually comes out on DVD.

Glitter650 11-28-2005 04:54 AM

My only problem with the movie was that they made the phone messages spoken... having them spoken rather than sung took away from the humor of them. Other than that I thought it was well done so glad they got majority of the original cast together again, I wonder what that was like for them singing those songs again.

It amused me that a reviewer for one of the papers ( I think the SF examiner ?) was putting down the music.. WTF ??

OMG wasn't Adam looking good in this movie?!?!?!!!!

I was like "drool". LOL.

Too bad he's married with two kids. :)

dzfan 11-28-2005 05:46 PM

I haven't seen it yet -- I think that a couple of us are going to see it this week! I can't wait - wooohooo!

a.e.B.O.T. 11-28-2005 06:02 PM

No one did a better job then Anthony Rapp (Mark)... he was fantastic and his voice was amazing. He stole the show vocally for me, so did Jesse Martin!

I saw Adam as Radames in Elton John's version of Aida...he was even hotter there...

Also, does anyone know if he ever played Chris in Miss Saigon? If not, he should have!

We did, too. Opposite Heather Headley. What a remarkable voice.

a.e.B.O.T. 11-30-2005 12:32 AM

He was in Rent Cabaret Aida and Fully Commited

ZTABullwinkle 12-03-2005 11:29 PM

Saw the movie today! Who knew that Jesse Martin had that voice!?!?! I will definitely see it again in the theaters...This time with kleenex!

I haven't seen the Broadway version. But it is coming in February. PM me if there is a big difference between the two.

LOVED IT!

FAB*SpiceySpice 12-04-2005 01:47 PM

So I am lame and went to go see this again on Friday night. This time I brought a whole bunch of kleenex with me thankfully. It was just as good/even a bit better the second time around. The funeral scene in the church where Jesse L. Martin is singing to Angel is the most beautiful part IMO, but the whole thing is just seriously fabulous. And I already told my best friend I'd go see it w/her sometime this week. ;) Also, I will most def. be buying it the day it comes out on DVD which won't be for forever sadly. :(

Xylochick216 12-04-2005 05:08 PM

I think we're going back this week.

The more I think about itk, the more I love the part when the people at the support group meeting fade out. It made me sob the first time, and every time I think about it I get teary-eyed.

That was an awesome scene, but the finale was the best....especially with how Mark ended his "documentary." Took my breath away.

_Opi_ 12-05-2005 12:36 AM

Am I the only who didn't really enjoy this movie. I miss it was alright..but definately not one the best movies of the year for me.

I did, however, like some of the songs...

AChiOAlumna 12-05-2005 02:18 PM

Okay, we went last night and saw "RENT." We weren't sure how it was going to turn out for us, but I have to admit we enjoyed it immensely. I thought some of the liberties they took with the movie were very artistic and creative and added to the story...couple of things that stood out for us:

1) I liked how they showed Roger's GF finding out she was HIV+. I think it would've been more powerful to show how she died....that part was omitted.

2) Seeing the shot with the Twin Towers...it took me aback for a moment, but then I realized it made sense because it takes place in 1989.

3) I loved the "Santa Fe" scene....very creative!!!

4) I liked the end of Mark's documentary as well...very powerful....

No, I'm sure there was someone else.

Somewhere.

AlphaFrog 02-03-2006 08:36 AM

Sweet:
RENT! hits the dollar theater the same week the baby is going with Grandma & Grandpa to visit other Grandma & Grampa in Mexico. I think my husband and I have a date Saturday night!

Xylochick216 02-03-2006 10:31 AM

It just got to the dollar theater here, too. I am so excited for it to come out on DVD later this month. I think I'm getting it from the hubby as a late birthday present :)

Jill1228 02-03-2006 12:13 PM

Yeah I just saw this coming across our store wire...I will be all over this

dzfan 02-03-2006 01:40 PM

Loved this movie!! When does it come out on DVD? Really want to buy it :)

I thought that as well.

Here's my short analysis:

If you went expecting to see the stage version on the movie screen, you might have been dissappointed, but if you keep an open mind, I thought it was wonderful. My husband liked it as well.

KDAngel 03-05-2006 04:09 AM

I bought the DVD the other day and I stand by the fact that I love it. I saw it at the NY Theatre before it made it to Broadway, and then 3x on Broadway, and I thought the movie was a great telling of the musical. I also watched the 2hr back story of it all on the DVD and it makes you appreciate it even more. It's just such an amazing story. Great job Jon Larson!!

Xylochick216 03-05-2006 12:31 PM

The documentary was definitely great. I loved the commentary by Chris Columbus, Anthony Rapp, and Adam Pascal. I learned a lot from them :)

Jill1228 03-05-2006 02:15 PM

Yup I bought the DVD too. I love it!

I love the stage version and bought the dvd. While I enjoyed the movie version, I much preferred the alternate ending to the actual film ending.
