Idaho football player shot and killed
September 20, 2004 Eric McMillan, 19, a University of Idaho student who played cornerback on the football team, was shot Sunday evening at his home on Lentner Ave. in Moscow. McMillan died from his injury at 4 a.m. today at Gritman Medical Center. Witnesses who called the police at about 5:20 p.m. Sunday told officers they saw a older white BMW driving away from the area. Macaulay Culkin Joins List Of Busted Young Celebs
Macaulay Culkin is probably wishing he had stayed home alone Friday. The 24-year-old former child star was arrested in Oklahoma City on suspicion of possessing marijuana and a controlled substance (without a prescription). He was busted during a traffic stop, spent two hours in jail before being released on $4,000 bail. In all, authorities say they found approximately 17.3 grams of weed, eight white Xanax pills (2 mg each) and 16 round white pills identified as Clonazepam, about 2 mg each, in a clear plastic baggie. F.Y.I. In recent months, numerous grownup kid celebrities have been in the headlines for getting on the wrong side of the law, including troubled Terminator 2 actor, Edward Furlong, now 27, who was nabbed for drunkenly trying to free lobsters from a restaurant tank. Growing Pains cutie Tracey Gold, 35, who famously overcame anorexia, was arrested for drunken driving after a crash that injured her family members last week. Today’s Britney Spears gossip includes a report that Brit and her hubby Kevin Federline “spent a marathon 48 HOURS in bed” after their wedding. Insiders claim the couple “retired” to their plush honeymoon suite in the early hours Sunday — and were still there late last night. And a bodyguard revealed he had been given strict instructions not to disturb the lovebirds. He said: “We rang for Britney once and she went ballistic. She said we were only to contact them again if the world caved in.” You’ll recall that Britney said last week she wanted to try for a baby on her wedding night. She wasn’t kidding. Hotel staff had orders not to disturb them in their presidential suite, which included a king-sized bed and marble bathtub big enough for two. As is tradition, the bride and groom held a post-wedding breakfast with family the day after tying the knot. But Kevin’s mom Colette was left to eat alone with his step-father on Sunday morning. And when asked where the couple was, his Mom said: “Where do you think!” On another note, Britney’S wedding guests were given goodie bags — containing a silver teardrop key ring with a photo of the happy couple. There was also a pair of Gap jeans, a packet of “Choose Juicy” mints and Nike trainer laces. Apparently the couple got the idea from gifts given out at the Oscars. One guest said: “The key ring was nice but Kevin’s granny didn’t seem too thrilled with the trainer laces.” |

50 Cent 'Locks' Down Film Debut 1 hour, 29 minutes ago By Carla Hay NEW YORK (Billboard) - Rapper 50 Cent  will make his film debut in the semi-autobiographical "Locked and Loaded." 50 Cent will play a former drug dealer who gives up a life of crime to pursue a music career. "The Sopranos" writer/executive producer Terence Winter is writing the screenplay for the project, which is expected in theaters in 2005 or 2006. The project will be shepherded by Interscope Geffen A&M chairman/CEO Jimmy Iovine and Eminem (news - web sites) manager Paul Rosenberg, who have inked a first-look feature film deal with Paramount Pictures and MTV Films. Iovine and Rosenberg were, respectively, a producer and executive producer of Universal Pictures' "8 Mile," a 2002 feature film loosely based on the life of its star, Eminem. The film grossed nearly $117 million at the U.S. box office, according to Nielsen EDI. The "8 Mile" soundtrack (Shady/Interscope Records) spawned Eminem's "Lose Yourself," which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in addition to winning an Oscar for best original song and a Grammy Award for best rap song. Rosenberg is a VP at Eminem's Shady Records, to which 50 Cent is signed. Sources say the label is expected to release the "Locked and Loaded" soundtrack. Reuters/Billboard |

So, did she or didn't she? And is she or isn't she? Britney Spears most definitely got married last week, People magazine reports in its Oct. 4 issue filled with pictures of the pop star and her fiance, Kevin Federline, in wedding apparel and surrounded by family and friends What the couple didn't do, according to the Los Angeles County registrar's office, is file a marriage license after the ceremony. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm..._spears_wedding __________________ |

Kim's lil' parking problem
Lil' Kim was a bit too fashionably late to Harlem's new Cherry Lounge the other night.
When she arrived at the club around 2 a.m., security wouldn't let her driver pull up to the entrance, as they had allowed Wyclef Jean, Sean (P. Diddy) Combs and Bruce Willis to do. "I don't know what's going on," she told us as she sulked in her Bentley. She then remarked, "You better not write anything bad about me, b****." Oops! Too late. http://www.nydailynews.com/front/sto...p-201282c.html Why in the hell was BRUCE WILLIS there? WTF? Did Timbaland and DJ Clue really put Bruce Willis on the list for their club? He's 49, shouldn't he be at home with his kids that have messed up names like Scout, Rumer, and Tallulah? |

Oprah's Car Winners Hit With Hefty Tax Bill
When Oprah Winfrey gave away 276 cars last week to the audience of her show, images of people laughing, jumping, crying -- some hysterically -- filled the airwaves and the giveaway became stuff of legend. Late night talk show hosts and newspaper columnists are still talking about it.
But now some of those eager prizewinners have a choice: Fork over $7,000 or give up the car. Um, did they think just because it was Oprah they didn't have to pay the taxes. Duh! |

Manute Bol, Broke and unable to walk... San Francisco Chronicle Fellow Warriors reach out to aid a gregarious giant down on his luck. Manute Bol, the NBA's tallest player in his heyday, is broke and unable to walk after a June car crash -- old teammates rally to help Jorge L. Ortiz, Chronicle Staff Write They made an unlikely pair -- the Brooklyn-born gym rat with a classic basketball pedigree alongside the former Sudanese tribesman who stood a foot taller. Their friendship flourished through two seasons of playing together for the Golden State Warriors and, more to the point, hanging out and laughing after practice to the extent that Manute Bol named one of his sons after Chris Mullin. Each went his own way when their NBA careers were over. Mullin, an All- Star player, would return to the game as an executive with the Warriors. Bol's path has been harrowing, taking him from ill-fated goodwill missions in Sudan to financial straits and the desperate world of celebrity boxing. Now he's in a hospital bed, recovering from a terrible car accident. As Bol recovers from his brush with death, Mullin and the Warriors are extending a helping hand. They have organized a fantasy camp aimed at raising funds to help pay the mounting medical bills incurred by Bol, who has been in a Connecticut hospital for nearly three months after being severely injured in the crash June 30. Bol suffered three fractured vertebrae in his neck, a head wound, a crushed wrist, a broken kneecap and internal injuries when the cab he was riding in veered off course, bounced off a guardrail and smashed against a rock ledge alongside a road in Colchester, Conn. The taxi driver was killed. "The accident was very big,'' Bol, 41, said from his bed at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain. "People did not think I was going to live. But rehab is going very well, and I can sit by myself, and I can talk to people.'' The 7-foot-7 Bol, as tall as anybody in NBA history, still can't walk without assistance, and his left wrist -- which doctors grafted to his abdomen to promote circulation -- remains in a cast. His vertebrae have healed, but Bol said doctors told him he won't leave the hospital before next month. When he does, Bol, who does not have medical insurance, will face a huge debt he says he can't afford to pay. He gave away large sums to Sudanese Christians persecuted by the country's Islamic fundamentalist government, and his NBA pension does not kick in until he turns 45. So the Warriors are stepping in. Mullin, now a team vice president, and former teammates Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway will participate in a Nov. 19- 20 fantasy camp dubbed Run With TMC, a play on the trio's nickname -- Run-TMC -- during their heyday with the fast-paced club in the early 1990s. Not only will the fantasy camp's proceeds defray some of Bol's medical expenses, but Mullin hopes the event will focus attention on Bol's travails and help get him started on the road back. "He's a survivor,'' Mullin said of the gangly Bol, who came into the league at around 200 pounds. "You looked at him in 1986 and you thought, 'Are you kidding me?' Somehow he found a role. He used his height, blocked shots. He had an effect on the game and on people.'' Bol, who ranks second in NBA history in career blocked shots per game (3.34), played only two years at Golden State, 1988-90, before a brief appearance in his final season of 1994-95. He left an indelible impression, though, both with his shot-blocking and, improbably, his 3-point shooting. Coach Don Nelson often had Bol station himself beyond the 3-point arc to draw opposing centers away from the basket, and Bol actually made 20 such attempts in the 1988-89 season. "My heart is still with the Warriors,'' said Bol, whose unlikely story and gregarious personality won him the affection of the team's followers. "I had my best years there.'' The years since his 1995 retirement haven't been as kind. Bol moved to Khartoum in 2001 and reportedly was offered a job as Sudan's sports minister, only to have it withdrawn when he refused to convert to Islam. He returned to the United States in 2002 and has since partaken in several questionable publicity stunts in an effort to raise funds and awareness about war-torn Sudan, where the government-supported Janjaweed militia has killed more than 50,000 this year. Bol once suited up to play for a minor-league hockey team but then declined to get on the ice. Another time, he boxed against William "Refrigerator'' Perry in a pay-per-view event, and on another occasion he signed up to play the role of a jockey, never actually climbing on a horse. Despite playing eight full seasons and parts of two others in the NBA -- from 1985 to 1995 -- Bol said his bank account is depleted and he has fallen behind in the rent. He had been making a living through personal appearances and delivering speeches before the accident. Twice in the last year, Bol was arrested at his Hartford home after domestic disputes, one involving his daughter, the other his wife. He said both were minor incidents that were not violent. Mullin said his willingness to help his friend comes with the stipulation that Bol take steps to straighten out his life. "I believe there's something about him that he can offer if he finds the right niche, like he did here,'' Mullin said. "All the other places it didn't work, and here it did for that short period of time. "There's something there that needs to be illuminated. Hopefully out of this tragic situation something good can happen. That's our motivation, to try to make that the final outcome.'' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A friend in need The Warriors will raise money for Manute Bol's medical expenses through a fantasy camp in which pros and former pros mix with "campers." -- The Warriors Foundation Run with TMC camp is Nov. 19-20 in Oakland. Former Warriors stars Tim Hardaway, Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond are the featured participants. -- The camp costs $5,000, is limited to 16 people and comes with a variety of trimmings. -- See www.warriors.com for more information or call (510) 986-2200. -- Donations toward Bol's expenses also are being accepted by mail: Manute Bol Medical Fund, c/o Fleet Bank, 4 North Main St., West Hartford, CT 06107 E-mail Jorge L. They are trippin'!! I would put some money on the side or something and pay those taxes!! A FREE car? And they are complaining about $7K? PULEEEZE!! I work out a payment plan or something.
Trust me, no one should be complaining because they obviously are doing well enough to be sitting their behinds in the Oprah audience instead of working. :o That's just my opinion... :p |
How did Twitney and Thug Lyfe Kevin manage to pull off a wedding that was not only ghetto-fab, but PWT as well? HOW YOU DO THAT?!

If they can't afford the taxes, then they might not be able to afford insurance either. And that would be a doggone shame to have one of them riding around with a raggedy bumper on a free car. Plus, they wouldn't have to pay the taxes right now would they? Wouldn't it just be a taxable gift when they file next year? I bet I'd find a way to itemize it off of there...;)
I'm glad to hear that Manute Bol is getting help from his teammates. |

As like all shows when you win something or with anything you win you have to pay the taxes on it. I doubt that a car that cost 26k or howevr much it cost, will actually cost them $7k in taxes, depending on where they live. I know that the county that I live in the sales tax is only 6%, so if they get the car from their town which is what is happening so that they can get what they want in the car, I can't see any city having a sales tax of 27% that they would have to pay $7k in taxes. But hey if someone does live in a city or county where the sales tax is 27%....that really bites.

A radio station here gave away a house, car, furniture and a bunch of other stuff. Part of the prize was a "morgage" because people were going to have to pay taxes on all of that stuff. It is also not unusual for people on game shows like the Price is Right to sell a bunch of their smaller stuff (the refrigerator, scooter, etc.) to pay all of the taxes. One last things about game shows and taxes....I read somewhere that the show Extreme Makeovers (That's the one about the houses right?) trys to get around the tax issue by "renting" the person's house for 7 days for the value of the renovations. The IRS allows you to rent your primary residence for up to a certain number of days a year and not claim it as income. Lots of people tried to do this during the 96 Olympics in Atlanta. |

I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't have to pay for something that's FREE. Free is free, lol. |
Giveaways are not ALWAYS free.
If you notice with some giveaways there is FINE, FINE print which tells you that there could be taxes and other costs associated with the winnings. Watch those game shows (Game show network) like Wheel of Fortune, etc. At the end of the show, when all the credits are rolling it says it. I"m sure GM isn't tripping, they got what they wanted PUBLICITY for the vehicle. |
Income taxes are assessed once a year. The IRS doesn't randomly collect taxes throughout the year for lottery winnings or other prizes.
As far as some of the people not being able to pay the tax, which will vary based on their situation, they've got a few options. They can always give the car back if they can't appreciate the gift and don't want to be bothered with Uncle Sam. They can sell the car and get an affordable car in order to pay the tax. The reports say the highest amount of tax is $7K. Depending on what they buy and how much money they have left over, they may not be taxed the $7k and will have plenty of change left over which IMO is a better deal. It'll still be a free car and they have until April 15th to work that out. Most likely GM will claim this as a marketing expense since Oprah was the go between. If they were given a 1099 for the value of the car, I'm sure the other tax consequences were thought of also. Oprah may have gifted them an amount to cover the tax since she really didn't give them the cars. |

I know when you see lottery winners with those 500 bigillion dollar checks that is not what is actually put in their bank accounts. |
That's what I thought. I know a rep for the IRS is at the casinos when you hit over (I THINK) $1,000. I wouldn't know, but it's what I heard. I only won $800. :o

Quote:
In the case of lottery winnings, you will receive the net amount (whoever issues the 1099 does the withholding) so it's not like you really saw the money or really got the full amount. It's treated like wages paid by an employer who withholds the taxes hence the "net amount". Estimated payments and w/h are technically not the same thing. In the case of prizes, you get a 1099 for the value, no taxes are taken out and you aren't expected to make an estimated payment at that time. Can you willingly make a payment? Yeah, sure. But why up and give the IRS the money when it can stay and collect interest until it's actually due. I recall one client in this situation and we never made an estimated payment because of their new income. |
