Yes, I agree. Let's END this thread. I am dealing with all the rest in PMs and I think anyone else who feels the need to partake in this stupid arguement should do the same. Do the world a favor and don't reply on this thread. heh.

Those who want to continue a discussion about Toggle and Leet have every right to reply to this thread if they want.

For those who want to bitch and moan, do so amongst yourselves and please don't clog up my PM Inbox with your BS.

KTHXBI.

Re: I'll pass on kissing your Phi Sig tush.

You know what OohTeenyWahine, since you do not want to deal with this in PMs I'll end it right here on this board. I tried to create a sort of truce and end to the needless teasing and pestering and you would rather just continue it so whatever. Do not bother me. I will no longer communicate with you on these boards and I don't think I even need to give a reason why. Go on and contine your very interesting Togglecase thread. I'll just bow out of it now, and go onto threads that I find a little bit more um interesting. Yea I'm done.

mu_agd 08-25-2004 09:05 PM

so back to the topic at hand, toggle case makes my eyes hurt and takes to long to read and therefore i think it sucks.

I don't know what the original intention of this thread is, but it appears to me on my first reading that it has turned into a not all that subtle attack on a GC member.

No matter what some folks think, that's rude. It's rude to our member and it's rude to the rest of the members who may be offended.

I'm offended.

Some other members who have asked me to either close or delete this thread are also offended. This should not be the place to make fun of people -- especially people you don't know.

While I'm on my little rant, I'm personally getting pretty weary of numerous people using their sigs to take shots at other members. It's childish.

Now, here's the cool part. As a moderator, I have the right to do what I want with threads in this forum. As I said above, I have had PM's asking me to close or delete this thread.

I'm not going to do that.

At least right now.

I hate having to be the grownup here, but if all of you kiddies don't play nice, it's history.

DA,

As the originator of this thread, I can wholeheartedly say that the intent was NOT to attack phisig chickade. While most people might dispute that citing my obviously snarky behavior online, I say this.

If I wanted to lash out with personal attacks I would have done so by hijacking BabyP's "Colors" thread -- where the Toggle issue first came up.

Sure, you may have received PMs from disgruntled GCers asking to close the thread, but many others didn't even make a connection between the user in question and the discussion at hand until she decided to get her panties in a twist (forgive me because I can't find better words to describe it) bitch me out and enlist the aid of her sisters just because I wanted to have a discussion about Toggle.

People didn't even know about "Toggle" until this thread and thanks to Kelly's insight on |33+, many of us know more about that too.

Again, you can believe my intent was genuine and at the same time you don't have to. It's up to you. And you can do whatever you want since you're the mod  , but I can honestly say that closing this thread would be exercising poor judgement, something I am surprised to see considering your reputation as an honest and level headed mod.

There are more controversial and heated threads in CC that deserve your attention. Don't waste your time on this one just because people can't seem to accept the fact that I wanted to discuss this.

But thanks for leaving the thread open for now, at least.

I agree 100%

I read through this thread earlier and agree that while it may have started out innocently, it isn't hard to find the not so subtle attacks. I have seen a few complaints about this thread as well and don't that it shouldn't be closed but a lot of the meanness on here lately has been pretty childish.

Back to the topic...

I do find toggle very annoying and hard to read. Especially when you have people typing full paragraphs in toggle. (The u_make_lj_suck community on LJ has loads of examples of this)

I also don't like people using Princespeak...ie "How R U 2-day?" But then again I am very anal about spelling and grammar. :)

I just learned about Princespeak. At first I was like, HTF does Prince tie in to anything? It took me a while to figure it out, but I finally did.

It should be a crime to use Princespeak unless you're the high and mighty purple one himself.

ilovemyglo 08-26-2004 09:56 AM

its all annoying- toggle, leet, princespeak- all of it-
i abbreviate here and there, have my occassional typos and poor grammar and i sure as hell dont caps or use apostrophes but who really cares at least you can read what i type!

Exactly...anyone who's ever lived/visited Missouri for some time knows that there are actually those random people who do say Missourah. It drives me NUTS though...one of my sociology professors used to say it and it was the most annoying thing ever.

I thought that was part of IM-speak.

MooseGirl 08-26-2004 01:30 PM

For me, I go by two different codes:
For IM, message boards, LJ, blogs I may use some of the "words" deemed annoying. Particularly I like "prolly". (sometimes I forget and actually say it out loud)

However, for websites and written messages of other kinds (letters, posters, signs), I expect to see all the rules of grammar and spelling in effect. I have been known to walk out of a store and never return because they can't spell a simple word correctly on one of their signs.

So for me, I guess it's a difference of "recreational" or not...things I do for fun I allow my self to make typos like crazy and shorten words, etc
But anything else is the usual.

As for Kelly's sig - I can read a few words of it, but still can't make it all out - still trying tho (yeah, another word I shorten often)

DWAlphaGam 08-26-2004 01:59 PM

Trying to read togglecase makes me nauseous. It's also irritating and a waste of time, to both the person typing it and the person (attempting) to read it. I didn't think anyone over the age of about 14 did that. I refuse to IM with my brother (who's 14) because of all the togglecase and princespeak and other abbreviations. I'm trying desperately to teach the kid some basic grammatical rules, but grammar evidently isn't cool.

All Togglecase and leetspeak are annoying.

It's like the language you use when speaking to people directly. If you use profane language constantly, people will make judgements about your intelligence (or level of sobriety). Proper grammar is the way to go.

That said, I never saw this problem on GC since we're (for the most part) educated people.

dakareng 08-26-2004 11:29 PM

I'm not sure if this is leetspeak or AIM or text message talk but I am annoyed by the shortening of words that are not intended to be abbreviated. Words like because. I saw a thank you note from a mother of one of our graduates (OK, NICU graduate so it is appropriate for the mother to write it) that used b/c for because. I'm seeing more and more of what I call 'lazy writing'. The abbreviations and shortcuts are so rampant that there are times that I can't understand the notes in the chart. Am I the only one who thinks this looks ignorant? Didn't the writer pass 2nd grade spelling? It is one thing to shorten words when text messaging but totally inappropriate in a formal letter, even a handwritten thank you note.

I think things like b/c, w/ (for with) and tx (for thanks) are more a leftover from shorthand or speedwriting than anything "modern." Although they are never appropriate in a formal letter or note.

I agree. I always used those abbreviations when taking notes in class. But I would never write a letter using them!

I use those types of abbreviations when taking notes all of the time.

Nothing wrong with it.

But would you use them in a formal letter? That's what annoys me. Sure, we all had ways to speed write while taking notes and that's fine. As long as you can read your own writing you can do whatever you want. It's when speedwriting is used in business communication that I question it.

They don't teach kids these things in school.

If I were a teacher and I caught kids passing notes, I'd mark 'em up with a red pen and make them correct the notes ;).

I don't think that kids know when to use what type of language. They don't understand the concept of "code switching". Do any of you who teach see "cuz" and "u" and such on papers and written portions of claswork?

Yes. Yes, I did. And the class then got a five-minute lecture on when such writing is appropriate and when it is not. I think they were really, really surprised to hear it from me, seeing as how I was their MUSIC teacher.

PM_Mama00 08-28-2004 10:54 AM

I use prolly, cuz, and other stuff because when I'm typing in here or my Lj or in informal emails, I just write like I'd speak and normally I'm typing really fast.

Does it really bother people that much to see "cuz" and "prolly"? Just wondering. It's such a bad habit that I do end up typing that stuff in papers.

There, I admit it.
