i've had mine for about that same amount of time and haven't gotten any to give out either. i just assumed that google didn't like me and that is why.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get gmail, so if anyone has an invite to spare, please PM me! It would be most appreciated!

I've given away around 9.

But recently, they really did dry up.

I think google is trying to make folks stop selling them on ebay and other places before they start giving out invites again. There are many accounts created by individuals right now that are just wanting to farm out invites to turn a profit.

I have invites. First three people to PM me with their full names and current email addresses (needed for the invite form) get them.

If you have an invitation, it will say Invite a friend to join Gmail next to create a filter. If it doesn't say that, you don't have an invitation.

Effort under way to offer troops Google's high-storage e-mail

ARLINGTON, Va. — There appears to be such a thing as a free lunch for deployed troops and their families.

Now it’s a matter of feeding them, so to speak.

Some self-professed computer geeks have joined to give deployed troops access to invitations for Google’s free e-mail service, Gmail, which offers an unprecedented one gigabyte of storage that will let them share photographs and videos across the Internet.

Gmail is currently available to the public only through the much-coveted invitations, which let users test it out as Google experiments with the software. Demand for the invitations is so high that they are being auctioned on eBay, and Internet sites have popped up where people barter deeds — mostly good deeds — in exchange for an invitation.

Now, invitations for the free e-mail accounts are available for troops overseas, particularly those serving in combat zones, said Anne Mitchell, president and CEO of the California-based consulting firm Institute for Spam and Internet Public Policy.

To register, troops need to log on to www.Gmail4troops.com and select “request an invite.”

“We’ve heard from some of the troops who said one picture from their wife, and it wiped out their entire storage space, or a new photo would delete an older one. [Gmail] has a gig of storage, and troops can see clips of home movies, clips of their babies taking their first steps, of their children’s graduations,” Mitchell said.

While the accounts are available to all servicemembers, “we are giving priority to those in the Iraq and Afghanistan and we ask them to let us know if they are enlisted, warrant officer, or officer, what unit they’re in and where they are stationed,” she said.

“We ask if they are enlisted or not because, though have been overwhelmed with donations, if the time comes when we have more requests than donations, we want to start triaging so that the enlisted troops on the ground, those who really stretch the dollar and feel the pinch, so it gets in their hands first.”

Gmail is still in the beta phase and while Google plans to make it public, those plans are not immediate, a Google representative said. A criticism of the service is that its users will be targeted with advertisements based on profiles and e-mail usage and the accounts can become a repository of personal information, to include information about troop locations.

Gmail4troops.com started when Drew Olanoff, who works for an Internet consulting firm in Pennsylvania and is regular reader of actor Wil Wheaton’s blogsite, e-mailed the actor to trade a coveted invitation for Wheaton’s commitment to solicit others to donate invites for troops deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait.

Wheaton, best known for playing Ensign Wesley Crusher in the TV series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” from 1987 to 1990, agreed, and he was inundated with responses, Mitchell said. Two days later, the two started Gmail4Troops.com and brought in Mitchell to pair donated invitations with troops’ requests.

But the anticipated flood of requests didn’t come, she said.

“We have several thousand accounts donated, and while we’ve already given out several hundred, we have had difficulty getting the word out to troops,” Mitchell said.

Olanoff said he got the idea from a soldier serving in Afghanistan, who pleaded for an invitation after “thumping” a swap site where people promised to trade goods and services. He thought, heck, troops already were serving their good deeds, and he pitched in to help, he said.

EBay, the online auction site, started selling the in-demand invitations a few months ago, when prices peaked at roughly $60, an eBay representative said. As the number of Gmail account listings on eBay has increased over the past few months — it’s now in the 800s — the listing prices have dropped and now range from 99 cents to $20 for multiple invitations.

Up at the top of your screen you should see the search bar and then directly under it (if you have invites) you'll have text that looks like this:

Show search options Create a Filter Invite a Friend

Almost just like that.

You first need the name (any name works fine) and *CURRENT* email address of the person you want to invite. You just put that into the little boxes that come up and click okay and it'll say something like "Invite Sent".

When they finish registering, you'll get a little note and they'll be automatically added to your address book.

I emailed myself a 6 meg file yesterday so I could have it at work. Anyone tried emailing anything larger than that?

Same here. I think they're trying to slow down the ebay invite sales. All they're doing is forcing the prices up.

Exactly...I wish they'd either send out more invites or open it up to squash the ebay-ers!

Well, I think they tried, but the ebayers were content to sell accounts for 99 cents each.

Looks like they're up to between $2-$3 now.

Once the invites were being passed out often. For now, it seems Google has put a stopper in them.

Should be back up in running eventually.

I only recieved two invites, after that I never recieved any. It's kinda disappointing because I love gmail so much and would love to share it with people!

I've had my gmail for a while now and I still have gotten no invites either. My room mate got gmail a day after me, and she barely uses it, yet she got 1 invite so far. So I'm completly confused as to how they hand out invites, it must be completely random I'm guessing.

Sent a few files with very large attachments from work to my GMail box with no problem at all the other day... other mere mortal web mail portals (that haven't upgraded their storage space) would have choked! :)

It works like whatever e-mail you were using previously. It's just better in so many ways (in my opinion).

Enter your username and password.

From there it's no different really from any other web based email service.

How long did it take y'all to have invites to give out? I've had it for a few weeks now, and still haven't received any invites. I think gmail doesn't like me!

Within 2 days, I had 6. I gave those out and got 2 more. I gave those out and got one more.

I haven't had any since then though. That was awhile ago.

My list is old.

Is there anyone still waiting for an invite?

And does anyone have any invites left?
