O+, found out while I was pg.

I donated all through high school and college, but haven't since then. I should, though.

I looked it up, our daughter can only be O (although the site didn't go into spesific +/- so I suppose it's possible that one of us might carry a - gene.

Drolefille 06-27-2006 09:40 AM

She'd almost definately be +. Both of you would have to have the - gene. So like 1/4 chance of - and 3/4 of +.

bruinaphi 06-27-2006 10:03 AM

I am O+, CMV Neg.

CMV is a virus that somewhere between 50 and 80% of the adult population carries in their blood. If an adult gets CMV it can be silent or they may have flu like symptoms for a couple of days. If a baby or immunosuppressed patient gets it, they can die.

I give blood every 56 days. It takes 1 hour (from the moment I leave work to getting back to my desk), and is one of the most rewarding things I do. I give at UCLA's Blood & Platelet Center. I know my blood goes to babies who have transplants or are very sick at UCLA.

If you can give blood, please do. The US blood supply is far lower than it should be. If everyone who is eligible to give did so twice a year, we would not have critical blood shortages during the summers and holidays like we do now.

To answer the original question: I have known my blood type my whole life and come from a family of all O+ parents and siblings.

WhiteDaisy128 06-27-2006 11:30 AM

I am B+

I found out when I was being processed for my Marine Corps ROTC scholarship (which I later dropped).

There's also that handy search at the bottom... of course it only shows up AFTER there's a new thread!

ADqtPiMel 06-27-2006 01:05 PM

I'm O+, and I've known it as long as I can remember. I'm not allowed to donate blood.

BobbyTheDon 06-27-2006 02:02 PM

LOL wth?

Thrillhouse 06-27-2006 05:04 PM

I merged the two threads together.

I've always known that, and so the first time I found someone that didn't know their own blood type, I thought it was incredibly weird. :p

Type A: calm, patient, sensitive, responsible, overcautious, stubborn, unable to relax, conservative, reserved, punctual, perfectionist, introverted, obsessive, self conscious, uptight

Type B: individualist, dislike custom, strong, optimistic, creative, flexible, wild, unpredictable, passionate, forgetful, irresponsible

Type AB: cool, controlled, rational, sociable, popular, critical, sometimes standoffish, indecisive, aloof, unforgiving

I have O blood type but the description is nothing like me. I'm much more type A, with the exception of not being "conservative" or "uptight".

The Blood Vessel (a blood collecting van painted like a pirate ship) is in front of a local hospital today and one of my children is in the hospital so I think I'll donate. I hope it doesn't take long and that I can still go to the gym later. I remember that one of my sorority sistrs passed out during pledging because she went up on the sunroof to get a tan for a couple of hours after she gave blood.

Double Red Cell Donation

UCLA Blood & Platelet Center has started a Double Red Cell donation program for every day donors (it used to be that only family/patients could do double red cell donation).

There are several really great advantages to this program: (1) people who give blood two or three times a year can stay on that same schedule, but double the effectiveness of their blood donation; (2) donors say the automated double red cell donation is more comfortable than regular whole blood donations because a smaller needle is used; & (3) Donors also receive back their own plasma and about a pint of saline, leaving them better hydrated than before the donation.

I hope that programs such as this one serve to increase the blood supply.

I know that the post is a few years ago and I didn't read this whole thread when I realized it was so old.

But to the diabetic who doesn't know her blood type, ask your dr since they prob have to take your blood sugar levels 3 or 6 months a year.

I'm A+ of course :)

A+, B+ and O+ ....go figure :).

The blood bank called recently to ask Mr Sageofages to donate blood. He responded "I am sorry I can not donate, I am in a high risk group" and hung up the phone. Whereupon I said "what the F*ck do you mean HIGH RISK group? Is there something I should know?" He looked me *without* blinking..."I am in a high risk group...*afraid* of needles"

geez...I did throw the sofa pillow at him.

Updated to add, since Mr Sageofages heart attack, his fear of needles is much less (considering he had 16 bags of fluid running into him ...16 needles). Still not donating, but doesn't cry anymore when he has to have a shot :).

In the past 7 years that I've been eligible to donate I've already donated 1 1/2 gallons to the Blood Bank of Hawaii. Provided that I remain healthy, I will continue to donate! :)

Since posting this in 2004 I've upped it to 2 gallons. I would have donated more, but I've had a string of bad luck as far as my health goes.

I last donated about a week and a half ago. The Blood Bank of Hawaii was at an all-time critical and they called me at work begging me to come in. Luckily I was feeling up to it. :)

DolphinChicaDDD 06-12-2007 08:23 PM

I donated for the first time this winter, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be one of those statistics about people who don't go back.

Its not that I wouldn't want to give blood again, but I had a hard time donating it. I was rejected in the past because of low blood pressure, but this time I made the cut off. Barely. I was hooked up to the machine for nearly an hour. The nurse kept coming over, asking if I felt faint, and then resetting the timer to give me more time.

If you can't give a pint in 20 minutes they can't use your blood and they disconnect you. I can't believe they left you on the machine for nearly an hour, that's horrible!

SWTXBelle 06-13-2007 05:30 PM

AB+ - I'm anemic, so I can't always donate, but I do whenever I can. I hate the "stick" to test my blood worse than the actual needle to draw it!

Fascinating! My Mother is A+ as was my daddy. My brother claims that the Army typed his blood as AB-. He refuses to be re-tested, so until he's officially on the transplant list, I guess he's taking some major chances with his life! Yet, there were three baby boys born within 15 minutes of his birth, and my parents often wondered if they were given the right child...

Oh, I'm A+.

I'm going to be donating for the 8th time in July (4th time this year). I'm finding that donating blood is getting really addicting.

I notice whenever I go to donate and it's really nice out, that there are far less donors, so go donate people!

I've always met the nicest people while giving blood! I'm in the Gallon Club, but haven't been allowed to give as often as I'd be willing lately.

Animate 06-14-2007 12:17 AM

B+ Just gave blood last week too!

AnchorAlumna 06-14-2007 09:50 PM

A- .
My brother is O something. Dad was A+. Mom was A something.
I wish I could donate. They can't get the needle into a vein, and when they finally do, it blows or collapses. NOT fun.
But many thanks - MANY - to those of you who do!:)

SWTXBelle 06-14-2007 09:57 PM

Military blood typing

Honeychile, my father was incorrectly typed all his years in the Air Force. He found out only when admitted for back surgery - my brother went to donate blood and discovered he was NOT the same type as dad. We shudder to think what would have happened in the 60s if he had needed a transfusion - tell your brother to get over his bad self and get re-typed!

From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely thank you! My brother insists that the Army wouldn't have mistyped a combat soldier, but there's just no way he could be AB- ! You are just too sweet for giving me the ammunition (no pun intended!) to push him to be retyped! Thank you, thank you!

AXi1257 06-14-2007 11:56 PM

O+.

As an RN, I am giving blood products constantly to my fresh hearts (bypass patients) so I know the need for donors! Just last week, we had 4 emergent surgeries over the weekend... we went through so many blood products that weekend!

Yes, I do know that this is an older post but.....
When one donates, you are told to take it easy the rest of the day. Do not work out, do not smoke and drink water.
