Yeah. I think they were invented a year earlier. Of course the minimum wage was raised all the way up to $1.25/hour that year, too.

I'm sure this won't help...

Huge blast rocks Texas oil plant

An explosion has rocked an oil refinery in Texas, killing at least four people, according to local TV reports.

Television pictures showed firefighters picking through the smoking wreckage of the BP plant, south-east of Houston.

Emergency services warned people living near the site of the explosion to stay indoors, the Associated Press reported.

US gasoline prices jumped to a new high as word of the explosion hit the financial markets, reaching $1.604 (£0.8589) per gallon.

The explosion happened at 1330 (1930 GMT) at the western end of the plant, which covers an area of almost 500 hectares.

The Texas City refinery, 35 miles (55km) from Houston, is the third biggest in the US, employing 2,000 people.

It processes roughly 450 million barrels of crude oil each day.

That figure is approximately 3% of the US' domestic oil supply and one-third of BP's output across the US.

A BP spokesman told the BBC there was no official confirmation of casualties, but said at least one man was flown off the site by emergency helicopter.

Texas City resident Mike Martin described "a real loud explosion, like a sonic boom".

"It shook the pictures bad enough to where it knocked them off the wall. And it frightened me, so I jumped out of bed."

AznSAE 03-23-2005 11:44 PM

this morning it was at 2.03

i have never seen it passed $2 EVER over here.

AGDee 03-24-2005 02:09 AM

$2.19 here...

Oh, and I heard a BP refinery caught fire tonight and it's already making crude oil prices skyrocket. Adding fuel to the fire (literally and figuratively!)

I get corny when I'm tired.. sorry

ETA: I should read two posts above mine before I post, huh? My sincerest of apologies.

Bad news:

Indonesia was not able to meet its quota. The OPEC quota is at 1.4 bdp. Indonesia was only able to pump out 952,600 bpd. More bad news, Indonesia will only be able to pump 1.3 bpd by the year 2008.

DeltAlum 03-24-2005 11:31 AM

The refinery explosion in Texas City yesterday will drive prices up a couple of cents per gallon according to news reports today.

ZTAngel 03-24-2005 11:47 AM

I paid $2.09/g this morning. I think I'm going to start rollerblading to work.

BetteDavisEyes 03-24-2005 11:55 AM

I found cheap gas yesterday! It only cost me $2.35 a gallon.
This sucks.

cutiepatootie 03-28-2005 03:45 AM

Yep $2.37 this morning....$20 barely moved the dial :(

I'm wondering whether or not that was really an accident. I've heard that any shortage in gas in the US isn't really attributed to our lack of crude oil, it's attributed to our lack of refinery capacity.

IowaStatePhiPsi 03-28-2005 11:17 AM

$2.05 on Saturday. Highest I've paid since I was in Illinois and Arkansas in February and in Colorado in January.

CougADPi 03-28-2005 08:41 PM

$2.21 a gallon...that really adds up with 60 miles worth of commuting a day!!!

AGDee 04-07-2005 11:49 PM

Up to $2.35 today.. auuugh! I have a co-worker who is commuting 100 miles a day. He may not be making enough money to keep working at this rate.

There was some talk by the Michigan legislature of a bill that would eliminate the state gas tax if the average cost went up to $2.30, but I haven't heard if it passed. Time to go look that one up!

SigkapAlumWSU 04-08-2005 02:56 AM

I haven't been to the pump in a week, but someone told me today it was at $2.50. what the hell? I need to drive accross the state and go house hunting this weekend, but I'm on empty and I really can't afford these prices as a student! I swear, a week ago, it was $2.28, I don't know what happened.

bcdphie 04-08-2005 12:53 PM

I filled up for $0.999/litre the other day, but it has now gone up to $1.04/litre . Thank god I drive a Honda Civic is all I can say.

I think I will write my state rep and suggest that MO does away with the gas tax while prices are high! That is a great idea--- but I am sure my letter to the Rep wil end up in the trash-- although we grew up in the same town, he's a yr younger than me-- he does know me-- maybe I will call his house!! haha!

AGDee 04-08-2005 09:20 PM

Apparently I'd heard the story wrong and what they were proposing was to cap the sales tax at the rate it would be once gas hit $2.30 a gallon. We'd still be paying the other 45 cents a gallon in gas taxes plus 6% sales tax on the first $2.30 per gallon. However, it was fought because Michigan's economy is in the pisser and they need the added tax revenue. <sigh> It was a nice thought.

Dee

amycat412 04-08-2005 11:09 PM

I paid 2.96 the other day. :o

We came over to Denny's last night and the station with the Subway on Grand had cheaper prices than this side of the border. It was 2.35 there and 2.49 over here. I think a lot more people are planning to carpool for all the formals on Lake CDA the next few weekends.

Maybe our economy would be better if we had cheaper gas prices, and then people would have more money in their pockets to spend places... IE the gas station??? People should get free vouchers for the gas station if they spend a certain amount on gas.

I pay $37 for my Mountaineer when I'm near empty. This sucks.

OH! Marathon on Northline between Fort and Dix always has the cheapest. Unfortunately I have a BP card so I'm stuck paying 2.22 right now, but Marathon's this morning was 2.17. There were two gas stations in Westland that were battling each other and got down to like 1.9something yesterday. Too bad no one Downriver is smart enough to do that.

Don't these gas stations realize that if they sold it cheaper than everyone else, they'd get more business and gather more revenue and probably make out about the same?

chideltjen 04-09-2005 05:45 PM

It's up to $2.50 a gallon here... and I just got a new full time job that has an hour commute. :( (Total... not one way.)

I suck with numbers and such, but is that true?? This morning gas is 105.7 ($1.057 CDN per litre). How much would that be in US funds per gallon?

Being the bored nerd that I am, I figured the $1.057 CDN per liter to be $4.89 US per gallon.

Right now gas around here is at about $2.19 a gallon. This isn't cute at all.

tinydancer 04-11-2005 01:10 PM

The station nearest my house is $2.18. I sure am glad I don't have to drive too far to work.

Sister Havana 04-13-2005 12:24 AM

It is around $2.35 near me. It's up to $2.65 in some parts of Chicago. And this is before May 1, when stations have to start selling the summer blend...that usually kicks prices up. People are predicting $3/gallon and more this summer.

Thank goodness I take public transportation to work...that's all I have to say.

AchtungBaby80 04-13-2005 12:43 AM

Oh, Lordy, gasoline was up to $2.34 the other day. My mom came home this afternoon and announced that it was $2.17, so we all got excited. This is insanity! I'm glad I only work .7 miles from my apartment...that means I can walk if I have to.

ztawinthropgirl 04-13-2005 06:24 PM

Here in Greenville, SC, average break-down:

Low-grade = $2.19/gal.
Mid-grade = $2.29/gal. (which is what I put in my car)
High-test = $2.39/gal.

I'd kill for those days....(only like last month..grrrrrrrrrrrrr)

at the moment in LA gas starts around $2.60 - 2.80...we will be hitting that $3 mark very soon...

AGDee 04-13-2005 09:14 PM

Down a little again here.. $2.19 today, after I paid $2.35 last week

Peaches-n-Cream 04-14-2005 12:37 AM

$20 bought less than 9 gallons of gas tonight. I think the price was about $2.30 a gallon.

lifesaver 04-20-2005 03:19 AM

Top 5 Signs gas is too expensive.

from www.mysa.com

People slipping under your car at the gas station to catch any spilled drops from the pump.

Bank loan officers set up shop at the gas station.

Signs at the pump read: "If you have to ask, you can't afford it."

Gas pumps are reset to sell by the ounce, not the gallon.

Even the cab drivers take their customers to Park & Ride.

ZTAngel 04-20-2005 09:25 AM

I paid $2.18/g in Orlando.
It is $2.27/g in South Florida.

Just thinking about how I have to rent a moving truck and drive from Orlando to Atlanta and pay all that money in gas makes me sad! :(

I paid $2.39/g in Miami yesterday. :( WTF!?!?

RUgreek 04-21-2005 12:52 AM

i knew it, this was all a scam to convine and pressure legislators to approve the alaskan oil drilling bill. Oh well, so much for the refuge, at least we'll get better prices on gas (in about 6 months)...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlates...952496,00.html

chideltjen 04-21-2005 02:27 AM

Gas prices down slightly at the local el cheapo station. Was $2.49... now $2.45.

I start commuting a half an hour to work next week on the freeway. I'll be filling up every week. I'll be using my Safeway discount for sure if I can.

kstar 04-21-2005 09:20 AM

I still haven't paid over $2 a gallon yet... Though the drive out to the boonies for gas is almost not worth it now.

Query: Is it legal to buy lots of those plastic emergency gas cans and use it to transport/store gasoline for my own personal use?

I'm theorizing yes, and if it isn't illegal, it's probably not very safe.

RedRoseSAI 04-21-2005 12:12 PM

Had to pay $2.46 for premium yesterday. :(

I wouldn't think it's illegal. People do it all the time for lawn mowers. Also, during the hurricanes in Florida, people were filling up 10 of those at a time so they could use it for their generators.

Sister Havana 08-14-2005 12:35 AM

Prices here are getting absolutely ridiculous. I paid $2.61 for gas today. I will not be surprised to see it go over $3/gallon by Labor Day. It already is $2.99/gallon at a few stations in the city!

RedRoseSAI 08-14-2005 01:12 AM

Yup, today I paid $2.95 for premium in Morton Grove-ish
