ETA... HEHEHE we are ALWAYS telling one of our sisters "O'Doyle Rules cause that really is her last name |

[hijack] What is Menlo Park like? Is it a wealthy area compared to the places surrounding it? I'm asking because one of my friends from college just moved there and bought a house and I'm really nosy when it comes to other peoples' financial situations :D [/hijack] |

-Rudey --I wouldn't summer there. |

Well really Menlo Park is a pretty "typical" suburban area... it has a lot of trees and homes without fences... it has areas that are nicer than others and a bit more expensive... some large homes some smaller... mainly white people...normal homes in the "less expensive" areas start about 700 I'd say (maybe more...) and that's a small house... and the nicer homes are about a million. it's actually kinda the "middle" of the road compared to the surrounding cities... although none of the cities in the area are really hurting for money.....Atherton (right next door) is a LOT more exclusive and expensive... Atherton doesn't even have any businesses when you drive through it's all really big huge gates and long driveways.... Redwood City (on the other side of Atherton) is a bit less expensive (but also a bigger city) If your friends moved to Menlo Park, they're doing pretty well.. even if it's not one of the more pricey areas of the city. Allied Arts area is a very pretty area I had a lot of friends who lived in that neighborhood and we used to go play by the creek... I also like Sharon Heights...

Fugly, kinda. They just took the preppy thing to major extremes. Maybe it's a tradition down there?
Edit: A quick search found this picture from last year, so you get an idea of what I'm working with here. Edit AGAIN: I guess Webshots isn't a big fan of you stealing their bandwidth, so if you really care, here's the link to the picture. |

Wow, i have had fun reading this thread and seeing just how off base almost everyone is on their interpretations of southern preppy. The bottom line is that most people from other parts of the country just will not ever get it. For the southern lady or gentleman from an old family; dressing is about presenting youself with class and not wearing "fashion" clothes from brands such as Abercrombie, Hollister etc. Most people on here will say that wearing button down shirts, pleated chinos , loafers, short shorts and croakies makes southern men look like old men, and that is just fine because like I said most of these posters just will never get it. It is especialy funny to read peoples reactions to things like the state flag/confederate flag motif belts etc. Its like it blows people's minds haha. I wish i could find a good picture of this sort of thing because i think that some on here truly cannot picture this.

Who says that? I realy dont understand why you would say that. where is that written down? You are making my point for me. People just dont get it. I'm sorry if we are different, but that dosent make us wrong. |

I dont think that the model in the pictures posted by KillarneyRose looks too bad, I dont think he is hiding an extra 15 pounds in thoes pleats. In fact I believe that thoes picture are taken from the Polo website, the top picture being the Andrew shorts I think, which is exactly what I wear on a regular basis. Nothing wrong with the longer ones I just prefer the shorter inseam.
|
kroakies are important
they keep the sunglasses from falling off when you're on a boat or jetski, etc. why all the hate? Just because we don't understand doesn't mean we don't care. (reverse homer) |

I agree... Pleated front pants or shorts are just unflattering, and I also agree with the short lengths KR posted.. first one, while not HORRIBLE, is definitely second to the slightly longer one below IMO... I'm just sayin' |
Whoever said pants or shorts with pleats in them are horrible is baffling to me. They are far classier than flat front pants and shorts that look ridiculous with a tucked in shirt. I don't think flat fronts are very comfortable either.
To me, those that don't live in the South will never understand the prevalent fashions revolving around seersucker, madras, nantucket reds, bill's khakis, boat shoes, loafers, croakies, and standups......and I would much rather look like my extremely successful 50 year old father than a trashy douchebag wearing ripped up hollister and abercrombie. |
Well, as Long as they wear Clothing would be good wouldnt is be?:p
Heck dont most wear cloths that are comfortable with l;ittl;e Greek Recognition?. Are Greeks uncomforatable wearing Letters or Badges? |

I am not ashamed to wear my letters at all.....nor is anyone I know that doesn't flash theirs around on their clothes or cars. For me, I choose not to because I don't really feel the need and I really don't like wearing t-shirts. If you know me on campus and are a friend....then you would know that I am an SAE. |

I feel I should report that after two years, my outlook on this topic has changed dramatically.
1. I am the proud owner of many Vera Bradley items. 2. I purchased Croakies for Mr. AXiD670's sunglasses. At this point, he has only worn them at the beach. :) 3. Seersucker kicks ass. I don't know...maybe I've become more materialistic (read: preppy) in my old age, or maybe it's the influence of living around all this wealth in Charleston...but I want to flaunt it! I've started to become....SNOOTY! Oh dear, have I turned into Rudey? Oh, and in case I haven't said it before...that guy posing in the shorts is waaaaay hairy. :( |
