My name is Arlanna.......pronounced Ar-LaY-nA

tld221 03-12-2004 11:51 PM

been gone for a minute...

mi nombre: tanesha (the "t" of tld, in case ur wondering)

and through life, i realize the "right way" to spell my name is with an "I" instead of the "e" and i am not feelin that!

so, tanesha with an e will do just fine. :D

p.s. oh yeah! senior member status! happy 100th post to me.

Well folks...the name is Typhanye. The "e" is crucial, as are the "ph" and don't forget the first and last "y's".

We won't even discuss the numerous mispronunciations, misspellings and mistakes. It's pronounced Tiffany but not spelled that way, nor is it Tiffani, Tifane, Tifany....

I have been called Tyrone, Typhoon...by teachers for Pete's sake.

Sometimes, when I am really tired and fed up, I just let folks spell it any old way they feel. The major indicator is when I say "Typhanye" and the person says "how do you spell that?" I think "dang, if you didn't even try the old T-i-f-f-a-n-y routine, then I can't even be concerned with trying to get you to be down with my itsh."

It's a pretty common name but spelled differently. Moms was trying to be creative all up in the city of Compton...shoo!

The strange thing is I am really what my friends call the "anti-Tiffany." Tiffany means princess...of course and I think my mom intended on me being really prissy (and it worked for the most part until I got older) now I tend to be a bit rough around the edges at times...loud, vulgar, crazy, you name it,

Love your name!

Thanks! People will usually spell it Leila or Layla. My sister's name is Sadikia, pronounce Sah-dah-kee-yah. And I can't even begin to list the ways people have butchered her name.

:D Carolyne is a nickname that one of my friends gave me a long time ago. I got this account when I was still a prospective. There was no way in h-e-double hockey sticks I was gonna put my real name out there! ~lol

...Tyrone?

It is a different type of spelling but how do you get Tyrone from that?

Chaiya, Chava, Chaya and all similar spellings mean "life" in hebrew. I've been thinking of chopping off the "La" in my name and just going by Chaya. Your neice must be a very special girl. :p
Oh, she most definitely is!! Thanks!

You're welcome Epitome! :)
Yes, I can imagine the misspellings that your sister must see.

So when you say your name, people normally spell it "Leila" or "Layla?" If so, this would be good news for me b/c I really like the "Leila" or "Leilah" spelling. It means "black beauty" in Arabic I believe.

My little cousin has your name and it's pronounced the same way. She is quick to correct someone if they call her Dee-dra! lol

I'm surprised I'm the 1st one on here! I used to be the only Shannon I knew, but as I get older, I meet more! So much for individuality...lol

I actually know quite a few Deirdres. So for me your spelling is what I am used to for the pronunciation. The frustration for my friends is being called Dee dra.

My name is Sharon.

I agree TonyB. I could even see if there were an "r" in my name. She was an old librarian with purple hair who was subbing a class I had in 10th grade. I chalk it up to the PHS, purple hair syndrome.

My name is Sharon.

Most of the Deirdres I know go by the English pronounciation, Dear-dree, but I like the -dra better, too.

Strangely, most of the important people in my life have been named Sharon. I LOVE that name!!

I too face the frustration of being called Dee-dra, but I am somewhat used to it. No matter how much I tell people it is Dear-dra, they call me Dee-dra. Or, I tell them to call me De-De, but of course they insist on messing up my name. Uhhhhh, when will the madness end?!?!

Ladygreek,
I actually prefer being called Dee dra to Dee i dra. I use the former as my everyday pronounciation and the latter as what the announcer calls me every few years when I get another degree. :D

I prefer the sound of Dee dra. I only have one "r" in my name so I don't experience being called Dear dra.

De6, you're "Deirdre" right? If so, I don't know why people are leaving off that "r" before the "d." I am "Deidra" and so I don't mind being called Dee dra or Dee i dra, both are proper pronounciations of my name b/c the former pronounciation leaves the "i" as silent and the latter acknowledges the "i." I hear your point, however, b/c if I clearly had an "r" before my "d," I'd want you to pronounce that. Kinda hard to have a silent "r." :)

But maybe I am just missing some sarcasm there.

Candace with an A, not an I means Nubian Queen, literally. Some baby books say full of light, like a candle, but I prefer this meaning better.
