A rap reality show ?
yet another example of why art programs are SO IMPORTANT in public schools - it fosters creativity (which is something that is lacking in the minds of those who think of these shows). |

Bad news for AllHipHop’s homey Ley, who runs our community. We hear that thug crooner Ray J and Irish from 702 are now happily engaged. The details are sketchy, but now that Ray Ray is signed to B2K’s label, maybe he can afford a rock for Ms. Irish. AND, maybe B2K can give her a deal too. They could be the Hip-Hop version of Jessica Simpson and that other dude, her hubby. So, Ley...you can stop stalking Irish now. Our same source has told us that Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child is also engaged but to an unknown choir director. Guess they didn’t want to do the press release like Lil’ Solange… |
Gerald LeVert to get back with Marc and Shawn
GERALD BACK WITH LEVERT: The franchise returns.
by Ricardo Hazell Gerald Levert (Mar. 3, 2004) *The son of O'Jays founder Eddie LeVert, Gerald had a lot of pressure on him when he made decided to become a vocalist. His fine vocal technique was heard for the first time on the 1985 debut album by LeVert, which also consisted of his brother Shawn LeVert and their friend, Marc Gordon. By the time 1988's "Just Coolin'" had become a major US success, Gerald had already taken time off from the parent group to produce a number of artists with Marc, including Stephanie Mills, James Ingram, Miki Howard, the O'Jays and Troop. He also wrote "Whatever It Takes" for Anita Baker's platinum-selling 1990 set, Compositions. Throw in LSG, production work for the late great Barry White and a his most recent sets on EastWest Records, and you'll find that Gerald has succeeded in making a brand name out of his own talents. But times change. We wander from home in search of ourselves, but sometimes we're drawn back with a vengeance. Recently Gerald LeVert was drawn back in a most unexpected manner, an impromptu performance with LeVert at LA's Universal Amphitheater. "We got back together, we came out at Universal and the crowd went crazy," said the enthused singer. "Now we're going back in the studio. We're going to record some stuff and have some fun," Gerald said. "We've talked about it and now we're basically going to solidify it. It's just like old times. We hadn't done this in a while." Gerald told us that the performance was so spontaneous that before they knew it, the guys were literally back on stage, just like back in the day. "We call Shawn the coordinator," said Gerald when asked how the trio stayed in touch. "He kept everybody in touch and I ran into Mark again after years and years. So, Shawn picked up Marc, we came to the show and we did our thing." "The last time we performed together was around 94, 95. It's been about 10 years. We did that with no practice or talking about it. So, what do we have to lose writing some songs together after old times. I've done my thing and will continue to do my thing. I never thought we'd get back together to do our thing." You look at most successful groups and realize they all have a common denominator, they all break up. LeVert was no different, as we now know. "We had our differences," said Gerald. "We didn't agree on a number of things musically. Now that we're older we have a better idea about what we'd like to sing about. I know I've been through some things, Marc has and Shawn has as well. We're grown. We understand things better and we know each other. I'm going to be Gerald LeVert, I'm going to do my thing and I have my thing with my father. He has the O'Jays and I have LeVert. It's like a franchise. As black people we don't get together enough to try to make things happen and I think the older you get the smarter you get regarding this album. The O'Jays are about to get back together as a group and even if we record a bunch a songs and don't drop an album we can just give the O'Jays some songs you know what I'm saying?" Gerald LeVert is contemplating a return to the days of his career's youth as he and his former partners in songs reunite, but he told us that his primary focus is to become the best male crooner he possibly can. Though he is obviously his father's son in every sense of the word, Gerald says he emulates the smooth, suave mannerisms of Luther Vandross. "I learned a lot from my dad, but I've also learned a lot from Luther Vandross," LeVert told EUR/EURweb. "I watched Luther and I learned a whole lot. I learned how to pace myself. I learned that you don't have party and tire everybody out, you can talk to the crowd. Things like gestures that he does. I learned a lot from him regarding how he conducts his business and the like. "You know, I had heard a lot of things about Luther before I met him about him being hard to deal with and how he's this and that, but he's about his business. Being on stage you've gotta be about your business, he is and that's how come he demands the dollars that he does." Wow, LeVert is 'bout to be back on the scene and hopefully they'll be crispy and clean after years of separation. That's it for now, but if you know anything about Gerald then you know he loves to talk about music and boy did he. We'll have more from our conversation with him in a future edition of EURweb. For now, if you'd like to catch up on what he's been up to just log on to www.geraldlevert.com. Yeah, his web address is so obvious ... but not really. |

Students disown blackface at GSU
By ETAN HOROWITZ The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 03/04/04 Hundreds of students gathered at a Georgia State University ballroom Thursday to speak out about a racial incident at a fraternity party in January. School officials called the meeting after word spread around campus and students started posting fliers to protest the incident. During the weekend of Jan. 24, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity hosted an off-campus party with the theme "Straight Outta Compton," with guests encouraged to wear hip-hop clothing, said Rebecca Stout, the assistant vice president and dean of students. Two fraternity members showed up in blackface, and members of a historically black fraternity that was in attendance reported the incident to university officials the next week. The fraternity that reported the incident, Phi Beta Sigma, did not want to file charges against Pi Kappa Alpha or the students, so the university did, Stout said. The two students have been suspended from their fraternity, and the university has charged them with discriminatory harassment under the student code of conduct, Stout said. Discipline may range from diversity training to possible expulsion. The university also filed charges against the fraternity, and a hearing will be held in a few weeks. About a third of the student body at Georgia State is African-American. Organizers estimated that 700 students attended the forum Thursday. After it was over, some students hugged, while others cried and shook hands. "All students were able to express that racism will not and should be tolerated at Georgia State University," said Alvatina Upshaw, 22, a junior from Atlanta. |

Martha Stewart Guilty.......
NEW YORK - Martha Stewart (news - web sites) was convicted Friday of obstructing justice and lying to the government about a superbly timed stock sale — a devastating verdict that probably means prison for the woman who epitomizes meticulous homemaking and gracious living.
Stewart was found guilty of conspiracy, making false statements and obstruction of justice. The charges carry up to 20 years in prison at sentencing June 17, but she will most certainly get much less than that under federal sentencing guidelines. Her ex-stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, 41, was convicted of conspiracy, perjury, making a false statement and obstruction of justice, but was acquitted of making a false document. "Maybe it's a victory for the little guys who lose money in the market because of these kinds of transactions," said juror Chappell Hartridge. Stewart grimaced upon hearing the verdict, and her eyes widened slightly. Her daughter, Alexis Stewart, was in tears. Stewart left the courtroom with a somber expression, and she did not speak to anyone at the defense table before going to a holding room away from the media. She and Bacanovic must report to a probation office within a week for processing. Stewart spent most of her last hour before the verdict checking her watch and twirling a pen in her fingers. She later released a statement promising an appeal. "I am obviously distressed by the jury's verdict but I continue to take comfort in knowing that I have done nothing wrong," Stewart said in a statement on her Web site. The jury of eight women and four men reached the verdicts on the third day of deliberations in the case. The verdict came on a volatile day of trading in her company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. The stock shot up on word of a verdict, then trading was briefly halted. The stock plummeted after trading resumed. The charges centered on why Stewart dumped about $228,000 worth of ImClone Systems stock on Dec. 27, 2001, just a day before it was announced that the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) had rejected ImClone's application for approval of a cancer drug. The announcement sent ImClone's stock plummeting. Stewart and Bacanovic claimed they had a standing agreement to sell when the price fell below $60. But the government contended that was a phony cover story and that Stewart sold because she was tipped by her broker that ImClone CEO Sam Waksal was frantically trying to dump his own holdings. Waksal later admitted selling his stock based on advance word of the FDA decision. He is serving seven years in prison for insider trading. Stewart, who averted more than $51,000 in losses by selling when she did, was not charged with insider trading; instead, she and her broker were accused of lying about the transaction and altering records to support the alleged cover story. The government now may press to have her removed from the board of her company. She stepped down as chief executive after being indicted last summer but remains as chief creative officer. The verdict jeopardizes the media empire that Stewart carefully built over the years in becoming the nation's premier homemaker — an image she put forth by way of magazines, TV programs and everything from cookie cutters and garlic presses to bedsheets and pillows. Martketing experts have said that the company is so closely tied to her name and face that the effect could be devastating. Stewart was easily the most recognizable face in the government crackdown on corporate crime that began with the collapse of Enron in 2001. Stewart's supporters claim she was being targeted because of her celebrity status. The government's star witness was Douglas Faneuil, a former Merrill Lynch & Co. assistant who said he passed the tip about Waksal to Stewart on orders from his boss, Bacanovic. Faneuil said that when he told Bacanovic about a flurry of selling by the Waksal family that morning, Bacanovic blurted: "Oh my God, get Martha on the phone." He also said Bacanovic pressured him to lie about the transaction. Prosecutors further contended Bacanovic doctored a worksheet of Stewart's portfolio after the fact by making the notation "(at)60" next to her ImClone stock. A forensics expert with the Secret Service testified that the mark was made in a different ink. In addition, Stewart's personal assistant testified Stewart altered a computer log of a Dec. 27, 2001, message from Bacanovic, then immediately told her to restore the log to its original wording. Also, a longtime Stewart friend, Mariana Pasternak, testified Stewart confided that she had known the Waksals were selling. Pasternak said Stewart added: "Isn't it nice to have brokers who tell you those things?" But Pasternak admitted on cross-examination that the remark may have been something she herself thought, not something Stewart said. In closing arguments, prosecutor Michael Schachter said the story about the arrangement to sell ImClone at $60 was "phony," "silly" and "simply an after-the-fact cover story." He said Stewart and her broker "left behind a trail of evidence exposing the truth about Martha Stewart's sale and exposing the lies they would tell." For its part, the defense tried to discredit Faneuil as an admitted drug user and a liar. When the scandal broke, he initially backed up his boss, but later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, saying he had received an extra week of vacation and a free airline ticket for keeping his mouth shut. Stewart did not testify, and her lawyers called only one witness during a defense that lasted less than an hour. In closing arguments, defense attorney Robert Morvillo said that the conspiracy as outlined by the government was too sloppy to be true. He urged the jury to let Stewart get back to "improving the quality of life for all of us." "If you do that," he said, echoing Stewart's slogan, "it's a good thing." Stewart could have faced even more prison time, but the judge threw out the most serious charge — a securities fraud count that alleged she deceived investors in her own company when she publicly declared her innocence in the scandal. The judge had referred to the charge as "novel." At times, the trial seemed more fodder for gossip columns than the financial pages. Stewart's arrival each day was chronicled by a barrage of photographers and camera crews, with the tabloids taking careful note of her expensive handbags and stylish heels. Celebrities Rosie O'Donnell, Bill Cosby and Brian Dennehy all showed up in court in support of Stewart. Stewart had a reputation before the trial as a ruthless businesswoman, and in court she was portrayed as rude, insulting, demanding and cheap. According to testimony, she once threatened to take her business elsewhere because she did not like her brokerage's telephone hold music. |

There was a recent interview, if I'm not mistaken w/ ET. She was asked was she about to get married. She responded by saying to the EFFECT (which is not a quote) that she wasn't ready to settle down and wasn't sure if she had found "him".
Again, this is not a quote, but this is how I took it. IMO, THAT (latter part) was a diss. :o |

From EUR web-Merlin Santana killer gets 25 to life
TV STAR SHOOTER SENTENCED
Man convicted of killing Merlin Santana gets 25 to life. *The man convicted of shooting and killing actor Merlin Santana of The Steve Harvey Show, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Damien Gates, 21, was sentenced in Los Angeles last Wednesday with the judge calling the killing truly senseless. Gates was given two 25 to life terms, plus 20 years and an additional life term. Santana was shot in the head on Nov. 9, 2002 while sitting in the passenger seat of a friend's car. Gates was convicted Feb. 5 of the first-degree murder of Santana and the attempted murder of another man in the car. Two other people were charged in the case. Brandon Douglas Bynes, 25, who pleaded guilty in January to voluntary manslaughter and assault. He is awaiting sentencing. The other person charged is Monique King, 17, who is charged with one count each of murder and attempted murder. An officer involved in the case testified that King falsely claimed that Santana had tried to rape her, which prompted the Gates and Bynes to attack the car. Its girls like Monique King that should be shot on site! A man is dead and another in jail for life because of trifiling games. |
