Name: Beth Chapter/School: Theta Tau (UT Arlington) Pledged: Spring 1991 (I think -- so long ago it all blurs together!) Offices I've Held: None because I got married and quit school *laugh* Why I Joined APO: Philanthropy, friends, fun, something to keep me out of trouble Anything Else: I returned to school in 2005 -- to the University of North Texas. UNT has a much bigger APO chapter than UTA had had (as I believe Theta Tau is not active now) -- but in order to become active they basically told me I had to transfer my membership and essentially "re-pledge" (with their chapter -- not that I would *be* a pledge, but I would be regarded as such for a semester). I'm not sure if that was entirely accurate, but it was what I was told. I opted instead to retain my alum status with Theta Tau and joined a local spirit & service group instead for this 2nd time around in school. |
Quote:
Welcome! Yes, Theta Tau is inactive, but I think that there is the beginnings of a rechartering effort there (mostly due to glitches in the chapter listing software at the National Website that I think I understand. :) As for UNT's policy, I believe that is within the rules, they get to vote on accepting transfers and having a semester of learning about chapter traditions (and getting a chapter Big Brother might be another) I think is acceptable. The chapter I was active in (Kappa @ Carnegie-Mellon) didn't do it. |
:)
Hi Naraht!
That's awesome about Theta Tau -- it always seemed odd to me that UNT has always had such a large chapter, while UTA struggled (and then went inactive). I knew UNT was within bounds :) I just couldn't fathom going through it all again! *laugh* I'm 34! |

Also I loved the ideals of what APO is about...I haven't looked back since Anything Else: I've had one of the shortest active memberships in my chapter's history (I graduate in a few days) but that doesn't mean I'm going to go quietly into the night. |
^^^Welcome to APO and congratulations on your upcoming graduation!!!

I saw one brother with about the same about of time as a brother as an undergrad start a chapter as a graduate student. All of the same opportunities after graduation no matter how long you were active! Randy |

Chapter/School: Nu Sigma, Stephen F. Austin State University Pledged: Spring 2006 Offices I've Held: Pledge Class Fellowship VP(Spr 06), Pledge Trainer(Fall 06), Sergent at Arms(Fall 07) Why I Joined APO: I wanted to find myself and what I really was about. So I feel like serving the fraternity, community and school was the best way to do it. Anything Else: I was the oldest to pledge in my chapter, and my nicknames are Old Man River, Granddaddy South, Father Time, and Doc Holliday. |
Welcome!

How do APO & GSS interact at SFASU? YiLFS Randolph Finder James W. Dean Pledge Class (Fall 1986) |
Well, I know as myself goes, I interact with GSS here all the time, but it's a rift between some of the members of Gamma Sig and past APO members.

Chapter: Pi Chi, Duquesne University Pledged: SPC o7 Offices: Sgt.-At-Arms Why I pledged? Tradition Grandfather-Kappa Beta 1954 Uncle-Pi Chi 1974 I'm third generation |
Welcome Andrew!
Welcome Andrew!
Did the chapter know you were a legacy? I've heard of both situations. My undergraduate chapter had one sibling pledge 3 years after the other so we all knew. OTOH, I also heard of one chapter where chapter didn't know until the legacy's father showed up for initiation. Randy |
Yes the whole chapter knew
It's not something I hid from the chapter as I was pledging, my uncle pledged the same chapter as I did It and many of the alumni that pledged when he did all those years ago are still quite active and close to the chapter |
Cool
Did he make it there to see you initiate? :)
|
No they couldn't make it sadly
My grandfather hasn't associated himself with Alpha Phi Omega for a long time, he pledged over 50 years ago But we made my uncle our chapter advisor |
Thank you for the info. I know that Alpha Phi Omega, unlike some other groups, doesn't have any official meaning in the recruitment process, but it is still interesting to me to hear about those for whom it is true.

Name: Onnolee
Chapter/School: Alpha Gamma Mu - William Paterson University of New Jersey Pledged: Spring 2006 - Alpha Zeta Class Offices Held: Recording Secretery, Rush Chair, Service Vice President, Assistant Pledgemaster. Why I joined: It's a bit of a long story. Two years before I actually pledged, a pledge from that semester's pledge class approached me and asked me to fill out a survey about what type of service the campus needs most. From them on, I was interested in APO, but I never pledged or did anything about it. Fast forward 2 years later, and I'm in RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) preparing to be baptised. There was a weekly bible study and I had been unable to go all semester until this one particular day. I rushed down to the chapel, and no one is there, because it was Club Fair day. So my priest put me in his car and we went over there. Down from the Chapel table was the APO table and I saw a brother that I knew. The rest is history. I feel like, in a corny way, that it was fate for me to become a brother though. Anything else: I think I said enough up there, haha. ^_^ |

Welcome Heather and all brand new brothers!
