Dad always had the best ones though...a couple years ago he came home after the first day of class and had this great story:

He's reading the roll call with a new class, making sure he knows how to pronounce everyone's name, filling out the seating chart, etc. Normal routine, no big deal. He's about 1/2 way done and he sees this one name that makes him pause. He has no idea what to say for the first name, so he just says her last name, "Miss Smith?"

The young lady stands up and says, "Mr. _____, my name is Sha-Theed!"

My dad just says okay and jots down the pronounciation next to:

Sh*thead Smith

Dad showed me his class roster - the name was actually spelled S-H-I-T-H-E-A-D.

 Someone SLAP his parents for spelling it like that!

Speaking of which, there was a kid at my high school named Physique!

greeklawgirl 01-12-2004 12:18 PM

Speaking of Gaelic names, since my husband is Irish, we have lots of them in the family. My husband's name is Sean (sorry, Kiki) and he spells it with the failte (sp?--I'm talking about the accent mark between the letters). His sister's name is Roisin (pronounced Ro-sheen). We also have a Siobhan and a Clodagh in the family.

On my side, we have all the traditionally Greek names. We have an Aristides, an Iraklis, an Olympia, and an Eleftheria. BTW Annie--my mom's name is Calliope (although its been translated into something else in Englsh)!

As for kids, greeklawboy's last name just screams Irish, so we tease each other that we're going to give our kids really Greek names to give them a complex. Just imagine a kid named something like this:

Odysseus O' Brian
Themistocles Mallone
Terpsichore Maguire
Aphrodite Callahan

Oh, the cruel possibilities are endless! ;) :p :D

tnxbutterfly 01-12-2004 02:10 PM

Way back when I was in the 6th grade, I went to school with Michael Jackson. He was our class president and everything.:D

When I got to 7th grade, there was a girl named Cinnamon and also a girl named Cherry (pronounced Sherry) in my class

DigitalAngel126 01-12-2004 02:25 PM

I had a tennis instructor named Michelle Michelle. She was named Michelle when she was born and then married a french guy who's last name was Michelle. It was really wierd calling her "Mrs. Michelle". heh.

I see no problem with giving kids an ethnic name, I think it's a nice way to de-mutt a little. If I ever end up having the little terrible carpetcrawlers, they'll probably have fairly Irish names, since I do. :)

ADPiSAI 01-12-2004 04:06 PM

Phuc.
It's... Vietnamese, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), and I don't know what the real pronunciation is, but you know what everybody would be saying... kind of like Sh*thead there.

I have a cousin named Jupiter, but he goes by Jay (I don't blame him...).

I have an ethnic name too, but it's my middle name, and I don't use it, except on official docs. It sounds a bot like Cynthia (my first name) though.

There is a guy on Average Joe 2 named Phuc and he pronounces it like "book", but with a "f" sound in front.

I think the name "Phuc" is Vietnamese too (given that there are a helluva lot of Vietnamese restaurants that have "phuc" in their name, somewhere), but the guy on Average Joe 2 said on camera that he is Chinese (I think someone asked him if he was Thai? And he countered that, no, he was Chinese).

Perhaps he has various Asian ethnicities / countries in his heritage.....

He spells his name "Phuc".

Fuk is a Chinese last name. Sometimes spelled Fook (I think). The Anglicized pronunciation is usually Fook (as in shoe)

BWAH HA HA HA HA.....

juniorgrrl 01-12-2004 06:08 PM

I've got an "ethnic" name - its French. Aimée. My middle name is another French name; its a family last name. My last name is also French.

No one can frickin' pronounce it. And when I teach people, most choose not to and call me Amy. It's a perfectly nice name, but ITS NOT MINE.

I would never take the trendy route with names for my kids. My SIL named her little boy Liam, which is way too trendy, and doesn't go with their last name. Thank God it wasn't a girl, she would have been Lola, which is just sending your kid down the road to stripperdom.

Her SIL's kids are named Peyton, Parker and Lauren...really, they should have carried the P-theme. Lauren just doesn't seem to go with the others.

With names, like so much else, one man's trash is another man's treasure!

I can pronounce it, as can most people if you tell them. It's really not that hard. I have a name that people don't pronounce correctly--until I show them how. After one or two times, everyone gets it!

Well, I suppose if we had twins, we could name them after famous mythological Greek twins:
Castor and Polydeuces; or, if girls
Helen and Clytemnestra; or even
Apollo and Artemis.

Yuck! Lets keep our fingers crossed for no twins, lol. ;)

I don't suggest Paris and Helen, or Oedipus and Electra...nor Vulcan and Aprhodite...

You know my kids are going to have some crazy Norwegian names like Thor, Gunnar, Freya, or Astrid. Valkyrie and Valhalla anyone?

I have a sister (no lie) named Astrid.

If my last name were Banks (it's not) I wouldn't name my kid Robin. It's just asking for it.

I like Skandinavian names. Astrid is a beautiful name for a girl, and for boys, I like Sven, Lars, or Skaar.

Jeg liker å lære norsk! ;)

Ohhh, will you be my ViKing, as I am a ViQueen? I bet you'd look hot in a Norwegian sweater!

If you're ELCA Lutheran I couldn't ask for more.

Oh and my friend from Iowa says GO CYCLONES... :D

I have a close friend whose name is Astrid. Shes one of those people whose name fits her perfectly- she is extremly unique, so when people ask me and my friends to explain Astrid, we simply look at each other and say "Astrid is, well, Astrid like".

I actually like the name Astrid, and from what she tells me its actually quite common in Denmark (which she speaks, and we always try and convince her to talk more!!! it sounds soooo fun!!)

But since my name is fairly common, but cannot be found on stickers, pens, kid's bike license plates, etc I REFUSE to put my child through that. My child will be named something she can find everywhere.

Hahaha

I think they named him that b/c they thought it sounded prestigious or something. His parents are real wealthy, uppity, high society people so I guess they figured it sounded...rich. Who knows!

wrigley 01-12-2004 11:44 PM

I went to college with a guy named Rocky. His brother's name is Stoney. His parents were geologists.

Greeklawgirl, I went to Greek school with a girl named Aphrodite.

I was named after my grandmother as were 6 other cousins so family get togethers are a riot.

Question

There's been alot of talk about "bad names". So I'm wondering have any of you thought about legally changing your name if you don't like your given name?

Has anyone just changed their name for the fun of it?

I legally changed my name when I was 21. I was born Cindy, but felt that I'd be taken more seriously if my legal name was Cynthia.

AOIIBrandi 01-13-2004 01:07 AM

My bio sister has a friend named April with sisters May and June - no lie.

I knew girls in H.S. named Amethyst, Mystery, and Dixie

DigitalAngel126 01-13-2004 01:10 AM

The Phuc thing got my thinking. My dad is a sales trainer (he teaches people how to sell stuff) and he has classes all the time. People get flown in from China and Japan and what have you all the time, he's used to that...But this one time they had a Norweigan (SP?) class and one guy (my dad says he was like the class clown) was named Geicgh (or something similar). Pronounced: Geek. I understand cultural differences and whatever, but my poor dad said he couldn't bear saying the guy's name without almost laughing. I can't say I wouldn't do the same. ;)

ETA: Friend of mine has a daughter named Diamond. Oy.

Dionysus 01-13-2004 01:21 AM

Not a name like mine, which is the flip side of the April/Apryl thing. My name looks like a "normal" name, but not pronounced in a normal way.
 This makes people so confused.

I explain to people it's quite simple: A-may. I'm happy if they can get out "Ahmay" (which I hate).

Sometimes, though, I've had people say "Oh, that's too difficult. I'll just call you Amy." WTF? Next time I get that, I think I"ll be sassy and say "okay, while we're making up names for each other, I'll call you ______ (fill in the blank with whatever comes to mind).

Peaches-n-Cream 01-13-2004 01:35 AM

I would not name my hypothetical children Mulva, Bovary, Gipple or anything that rhymes or sounds like a part of the human anatomy.

My apologies to Jerry Seinfeld. :p

Oh NO we have the SAME HAT!!!!

I still think Summer Eve is the MOST unfortunate name I have come across EVER.

LuaBlanca 01-13-2004 02:12 AM

I babysit kids named Storm and Harleigh.
My dad went to school with Marcia Mello. She had a sister named Cara.
My godchild's name is Falin Kenadi.

My ex-boyfriend's sister's name is Savannah...which I think is pretty.

I go to school with a Zhalet (pronounced Shah-lay), Ilona (pronounced Ill-on-ah), Andrina, Lelia, Gypsy, and a Dunja (pronounced Done-yuh). I think those are pretty names though.

I will never name my future daughter Francis or Francesca because I HATE the nickname Fran/Franny/Frannie/etc.

I don't mind the name Shawn but I will never spell it Sean because I hate that and always read it "SEEN"

There was a girl named Harley who came through recruitmentment this year, and before Pref, the girl who was going to be preffing her was like, "We need to get this girl! There NEEDS to be a girl in this house named Harley!" (Unfortunately Harley ended up going AEPhi.)

There is also a girl in my house named Bryttannee, whom I adore, but the name is a bit too much, veering off in that stripper-esque directions with all of the Tyffanis and Mitzis. We also have a Tiffany (whom I'm pretty sure is legitimately a Tiffany and not a Tyffani) and a Stephani.

There was a girl named Lynzi who went to my middle school.

Buffy is actually short for Elizabeth. Apparently the Queen Mum was called Buffy by family members.

How the heck do you get "Buffy" from Elizabeth??? I understand Eliza, Liz, Beth, etc...but Buffy?
Although I bet there are probably some silly young mothers out there who liked the TV show so much that they named their daughters Buffy. Silly, silly people.
(Not that I can really talk. My mom heard the name Erin on the Waltons and liked it so much that that's what she named me. But at least Erin doesn't sound like a stripper name.)
