OMG honeychile I entirely agree. My mom actually got reallys nippy with a CNA tonight who was trying to pretend she was a nurse. My mom got all snotty on her and said "I have a BSDH and I work for a major medical corporation. You are not a nurse. I want a nurse. NOW." The lady about peed her pants, but we got our nurse. ;)

I'd have to say, some of my biggest pet peeves come from working in Starbucks over the summer. Mainly, it's the reeeeally rude customers (we lovingly refer to them as Boca Bitches, for those familiar with Boca Raton, FL) who have amazing superiority complexes and say they've had cappucinos from ALL OVER THE WORLD, and that definitely isn't the right drink (keep in mind they haven't even tasted it, they just LOOKED at it). Then you have the customers who are complete and utter slobs, and then decide to leave it all for us to clean up while the line is out the door... and last but not least, we have the people who pour out half of their coffee in the trash can to make room for the milk (I say this because the bags had a tendency to leak)- for crying out loud, if you want a lot of milk, just tell us to not fill up the cup all the way!!!
That's all, back to lurking :)

oh my word, someone who understands what i am going through. those reasons mentioned above combined with slacker employees are some of the reasons why i am quitting in a few weeks.

justamom 01-03-2004 08:14 AM

Sorry Tom, but the Starbucks commentary reminded me of a few things...
When I worked at Steak and Ale, we had a ton of repeat clientele.
Two types of people got lousy service from me the NEXT time they came because to me they acted like scum.

Lousy tippers and PEOPLE WHO PUT THEIR CIGARETTES OUT IN THEIR FOOD OR DRINK!!!! YUCK! How disgusting to mash it into the potatoes when there's an ashtray right there!!!

Maybe I should have posted this under pet peeves...

honeychile 01-03-2004 11:59 AM

JAM, that disgusts me so much, I can't even bear to quote it!

I don't think these are superficial, so much as things that drive me crazy:

*people who cover their face with their hand when they sneeze, then try to shake mine!
*when I have to do 2-3 interviews in a row, and can't wash my hands in between.
*people who bring their kids on a interview! Hell-o! If you can't get daycare to apply, why should I think you'll be able to work?
*toothpicks for any use other than stabbing an hors d'ouerve.

and, okay, you get a call on your cell phone while we're together. PLEASE tell the caller that you're doing something, and you'll get back to them, or I will immediately assume that my presence is unrequired!!

I'm guilty of that! Sometimes I get shiny and if I'm about to take a pic with my friends, I don't want to be shiny in the pic!

I'm superficial about REALLY REALLY bad roots... I myself had highlights from 9th grade in high school until the summer going into my junior year of college. I know how expensive it is to get your hightlights done and touched up, but if you're going to get highlights, you should maintain them, or just go back to your original haircolor (like I have done). I was standing over a girl who was sitting on the subway, and I couldn't help but look down at her head... horrible roots. And right after I noticed that, I saw her blatantly pick her nose.

That leads me to my other pet peeve... in general just your manners, ie. don't blatantly pick your nose in public. Don't chew with your mouth open, common sense stuff.

Others--

-neglected eyebrows
-those clear bra straps when worn with a tank top for a dressy event. I saw a girl at a fraternity dated party wearing that and they weren't even fitted so it looked really sloppy... just wear a strapless bra.

I know there's no way it's real (unless the Pinto and foodstamps are a result of a designer bag fetish gone awry?).

KillarneyRose, OMG! I think that we are kindred spirits! I HATE knockoff bags. I, myself, have a slight designer bag fetish and it kills me when I see someone with a fake Burberry or Coach signature bag (by the way with Gs instead of C...what is up with this, do you really think this passes as a real one?) Hi, I am a new college grad who saves her tiny paycheck so I can buy a nice bag...don't think that your $30 knockoff from the mall carts will even look remotely like a real one!
Oh that feels so good to let that out...very cathartic

Actually, a few years ago, Gucci made a bag that is very similar to the Coach signature collection. Instead of C's, they made their's with G's. It was Gucci who began the design and Coach copied it. I don't think the Gucci bags took off like the Coach bags did. This is what I learned while working in designer handbags at Bloomingdale's. :) I too had thought for a while that people looked cheesy carrying around obviously fake Coach bags only to learn later that they were carrying around a Gucci.

valkyrie 01-03-2004 06:06 PM

I'm superficial about moderators who delete posts for no good reason just because they disagree with them.

PM_Mama00 01-03-2004 06:09 PM

People who buy really trendy designer stuff. OH and those pointy toe shoes. Like pointy as in "if you fell on my foot I'd rip you a new asshole". They bother me adn I don't think they're cute at all. Why do u want your foot to look a few inches longer?

AXJules 01-03-2004 07:06 PM

I think some of you are confusing 'superficial' with 'pet peeve' or 'annoyed with'. To me, being superficial is when you're critical of someone or something for a shallow reason (teeth, grammar, stitching, etc)

justamom 01-03-2004 08:17 PM

I'm just as guilty! BUT, it's not my fault! I was inspired by
layla2728, I just couldn't help myself!!!

TriDeltaGal 01-03-2004 08:21 PM

ZTAngel,
Oh no, these bags are definitely fake Coach bags...the fake Coach bags here in LA are sold by some shady manufacturing company starts with a G (I don't know the name, I would never get that close to one of their vendors :D ). I don't think it is a possibility that the sixteen-year old girl working at Cinna-Bon at the mall is going to have a Gucci. I will admit though, when I was in Venice, Italy some of those street vendors sell some mighty realistic "designer" bags on the street but I just couldn't convince myself to buy one.

Maroon5grl 01-03-2004 09:04 PM

-The Tiffany heart tag bracelet, I've seen the real thing and hundreds of imitations so much over the last year that it makes me want to puke.

-Fairly short people who wear really long trenchcoats...we all have our personal clothing/style limitations, so please recognize them and dress accordingly...the coat is not SUPPOSED to trail on the ground behind you. I just want to shake these people and say, "You are not Keanu Reeves!!"

-Really gross frizzy hair that looks like it hasn't been brushed since the person rolled out of bed. My natural hair is very frizzy so I think this is one of those psychological "you hate in others what you hate in yourself" things, but with an hour and a half of my blowdryer and straighening iron the problem is totally cured. Why don't people make an effort to look presentable??

-Couples who are ALL OVER EACH OTHER in public places. This grosses me out and reminds me of how depressed that used to make me when I was single. Even now that I have a boyfriend it still disgusts me. Holding hands or or a few kisses is sweet, but full on sucking each others faces out is not cute and nobody else needs to see it!!!! Isn't making out more special when it's done in private anyway, rather than on display for the masses to see?

I am too busy to spend an hour and a half  blowdrying and straightening my hair so sometimes it is frizzy.

James 01-03-2004 09:26 PM

I think you are right, although I can see how people can get confused.

I am trying to think of a good way to express the difference lol . . .

Maybe the Jeans thread?

Pet Peeve: I hate when people don't turn right on red when the traffic is clear.

Superficial: There are two almost identical items and you will only buy the one with the designer label.

Or, using an example someone already posted (wihtout knowing it)
You know when someone is in a store and their bra straps are hanging out??? that's so tacky!!!!! (pet peeve)

I will not speak to someone because I think she's a whore if her bra straps hang out (superficiality).

I wasn't asking for forgiveness, lol. I am just surprised that she spends an hour and a half doing her hair. The funny part is when my hair is frizzy because of humidity, guys think that it is really wild and sexy. :p I can work that friizzy hair. ;)

tunatartare 01-04-2004 01:26 AM

*Really bad spelling/grammar. I just can't stand it when grown up people can't spell basic words. Also when grown up people have horrible handwriting that looks like an elementary school student's.
*Fake nails. You know those really long ones with the weird designs and stuff on them? The other day, the woman sitting next to me on the subway had nails that must've been at the very least 2 inches long, and she needed to get out a baby wipe for her kid, and she couldn't open the box because her nails were so long. Why get nails like that if you can't do anything with them and they look horribly tacky?
*Anything that's imitation designer. I just can't stand it. If you can't afford the real thing, just buy something nice that doesn't have a cheesy, modified label on it. This goes for everything, purses, clothes, etc.

rainbowbrightCS 01-04-2004 01:40 AM

I hate (hate hate hate) dirty people. Like the ones who dont bathe or have dity under the nails. Or greasy hair!

I can kinda (sorta) understand a homeless person or some one who is currently working with their hands (like gardening or whatnot)

Otherwise there is not reason!!!!

Well what exactly do you expect a homeless person to do? It's not like (s)he can exactly go and and shower whenever (s)he feels like it...

I said I could understand why for them, in most cases. But in major cities there are shower for them, for like $1 or less. Plus Burger King has a sink where they can wash their hand/face.

But then again this is what I am superficial about.

I am superficial about housewares... I believe in having nice pots, knives, china and crystal... and sterling flatware. I am baffled when I see couple getting married and registering for pages and pages of things, and not including such items, which I feel are necessary for a proper home.

As for clothes, I do LOVE nice, luxurious high-end items... but I'll wear anything I find cute - whether it's from Target or Versace... The only item I consistently splurge on is jeans... nice jeans make such a difference!

My pet peeve is going to a biz lunch and seeing people who don't know how to properly hold a fork. It makes me want to stick a fork in my eye, call their parents and berate them for raising such a poor excuse for a human being.

Whew! I feel better. When I was growing up, table manners were stressed, so I am a real stickler for this.

Also, I hate white below the waist after Labor Day.
