Yea you're right...he did win the popular vote. And I voted for Gore...and at the same time...I'm SO GLAD Bush won.

Are you making a point by deferring to what people around the world think???

About 6 years ago he and my dad looked disturbingly alike - to the point that my friends started calling me Baby Saddam. :p

If that were to happen Ronald Regan would have to stand trial for providing chemical weapons to Saddam. and i would be willing to bet the farm thats not gonna happen.

no, I've never thought about if I was brainwashed or not, would brainwash me? "smelly liberals?" the left isn't unified enough to "brainwash". However, I have thought about the other side of the coin- as in what if Bush is right? I even considered joining the republican party and tried to get down the College Republicans. But I just don't agree. It's not that I don't think there are some valid points in the republican platform or that there aren't some alright republicans, like John McCain for example. I'd vote for him. But the direction that Bush has taken the republican party, and the country for that matter, is just way too far to the right. And yes, I do think there's a bit of a "conspiracy" if that's what you want to call it. I don't feel like typing everything I think out now, but if you look the 2000 election, Enron, the war in Iraq, put the pieces together and something smells fishy. I also strongly disagree with the notion that we as a nation have some God-given responsibility to bring the "American Way" to everyone else. That's just a modern-day version of taking up the White Man's Burden.

I hear what you're saying...and I hear the arguments all the time. And actually for me, its not about being republican democrat or a "smelly liberal" ;) Some things I agree with, some I don't. To me right now...the Democrats have placed themselves in a position where they benefit politically if the economy takes a turn for the worse, if we DONT find Bin Laden, and if we DON"T find WMD's..and that bothers me. Lets face it, no politician is perfect, and no PERSON politician or not can be 100% trusted...whether it is Bush, Clinton or Gore...that's why I am an independent and I vote by the issue, not by the party. I just refuse to buy into all the "garbage" that's spewed about Bush i.e. he only went to war for his Dad and that he's this evil little man. Peoples perceptions depend on party affiliation sometimes...because many of the Democrats who were for the war when Clinton was in office..weren't when Bush wanted to go.

Politics as usual I guess...

As far as conspiracy theories...I think I will start a thread on that. I know my community has tons of them that run so deep...people actually perceive them as the truth i.e. AIDS was invented just to kill the black man... and KWANZAA! (although its not a conspiracy theory....many people do believe this "event" has legitimate African origins).

I'm proud to say G Dubya is my president. He's not perfect...but I'll take him over Gore anyday.:D

I only hope that someday I'm as sure of myself and politics as a lot of you seem to be.

I don't mean this to aimed specifically at you, Bethany, but your comment above touched a nerve. I have equal frustration with those of you who are so abosutely sure of the opposite viewpoint.

I guess I just keep getting dumber with years and experience, because none of this stuff (speaking of the political side) seems nearly as black and white as it used to be.

On the other hand, maybe experience is a good teacher and some of you will one day notice that there are some shades of gray. Particularly in politics.

In any event, this thread is supposed to be about Saddam being captured.

This is actually the best post that I have read about politics on GC. :)

Instead of saying this is a great accomplishment...some people have to immediately go to "Yea well...what about this...and what about that..."

PS - If your tone continues in the same manner i.e. "What the hell..." your response will go unanswered.

would it really? people need to keep things in perspective. so what if we caught saddam? what does that mean? does that mean that iraq is going to be better off now as before when he wasn't in power but alive? people just want a scapegoat to blame their problems on.

President Clinton speaks out on Saddam's capture....

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former President Clinton praised the capture of Saddam Hussein and said the ousted Iraqi president finally will answer "for decades of tyranny and murder."
"I am glad he was captured alive so he can be brought before the bar of justice," Clinton said Sunday in a statement.

Clinton saluted U.S. troops, who found the bearded and disheveled former dictator in an underground hide-out on a farm near his hometown, Tikrit. Clinton also congratulated his successor in the White House.

"Saddam Hussein's capture is a tribute to the skill and bravery of our troops and the good work of our intelligence officers," Clinton said. "I know President Bush is very proud of our troops today. I congratulate him and them."

And just what does that have to do with this thread? Or didn't you read my entire post? It talks about the politicalization of the thread only.

Edited to add that there is a separate thread specifically to talk about the politics of Saddam's capture.

Sorry for my mistake.

Everybody, take a deep breath, step back. There you go. Now breath out and think happy thought. Done? Very good, proceed with the civil discussion please.

I have read all the posts and actually, I thought the entire thread
was very civil when compared with many in the past.

This is just one of those topics that carry a lot of emotion. Most of us know someone who has/is fighting in Iraq so we have a lot to say about it.

OBL may never be found. If anyone wants to hang their hat on that issue, go right ahead, but most people SHOULD realize he is an entirely different kind of enemy. His followers-specifically the ones who know his location- believe in his message.
Saddam's closest followers believed in the money.

And yes, the Dems platform was being scripted around the economy and Iraq. THAT's politics. They just backed the wrong horse. Americans can have short memories. So nothing that is happening at this moment will insure success for any party in the next election. What WILL determine the outcome is the "state of the nation" when the polls open.

DeltAlum- I'm with you. The older I get, the more grey I see!
(on so MANY levels!) :p
ps-grey is an acceptable alternative spelling!

Precisely. I would simply take the word "can" out of the first sentence. And I always waver about using gray or grey.

Really good post.
