I will admit, I have used my accent to get people to like me, notice me, remember me, get ahead, you name it.
The asst. superintendent of schools here calls me "Texas". In an area where people drive their "cah" to the "bah" to drink some "beeah", I stick out like a sore thumb. (This accent makes me want to poke out my own eardrums!). My students say I talk like Sandy on Spongebob. :p And dammit, I love Blue Bell and Mrs. Baird's.... If I said how I really felt, this post would be 10 pages long, so I'm fixin' to stop typin'. |
I have to agree about the new england accent dzsaigirl. At first its kinda cool but the novelty wheres off and Im like "PLEASE PRONOUNCE YOUR R's".

Southerners tend to be very loyal. Like Coke was created and based in Atlanta, GA. So most places in the south people will ask for a Coke, meaning any soda product. Even if the place only serves Pepsi. ask for a Coke they know to give you a Pespi if thats all they have. You don't hear pop or soda at all really.
|
AlphaGamDiva, do you mean something like, "She's a sweet girl, but bless her heart, she has a face like a split-rail fence."? Yeah, I've actually heard that one. We tend to season our insults with sugar!

Some things that I love about the south are the sweet tea, friendly people, peach or apple cobbler, and family cookouts. Like CarolinaCutie mentioned, I could not live without Chik-fil-A or Krispy Kreme. OMG, lets not start on Waffle House, I love the way everyone yells mornin' when you come in for breakfast. |

"God love her, but....she gotta bigger 'stache than my great uncle/2nd cousin jebb" "bless her heart, but....the only pageant she'll ever win is miss county hawg" "God love her, but.....i seen double-wides with less storage space" "bless her heart, but.....i do believe she was prettier with that extry 150 lbs at least when someone insults you, they also "bless your heart" ;) |
I love how you said EXTRY... that's so country and it just tickles me to death :D

Last night at work (I work at Cracker Barrel) I waited on this table of three southern women (the accent gave it away) and when they left, they wrote on the back of their check "The waitress was just precious!" For the rest of the night my manager teased me about being "just precious" *lol*

I have to say being from Louisville, that it is truly a mix or blend of North and South, one complementing the other. I'm from Louisville, been there since I was 5 and when I go out to eat I always ask for a Coke. And we have Chick-fil-A's, so by those two standards, we are a southern city, probably more so that Lexington which is actually further south. Hmm, interesting.

All the talk about sweet tea and sugar vs sugar substitute got me thinking
i usually make sweet tea with regular sugar... so today i bought some splenda and made my sweet tea with it.. at first when i put it into the hot water it kinda foamed up... but all in all it tastes almost the same..no yucky aftertaste... i think im hooked on splenda :) |
Being southern mean not caring what other regions say about us because we know we are the best.;)

As a born and bred Mississipian :D (plus educated in Kentucky) I can definitely say that I miss the South and will probably move back when I'm older. Things I miss: - Of course sweet tea (and not having to ask "is this sweetened?") - The FOOD! In the South, soul food and southern food are the same thing! :D and don't get me started on grits... - The people. Sorry to stereotype, but people are friendlier down South. - Etiquette. The only place I know where a girl (sorry, young lady) can still attends charm school. ;) Ahhhh, memories. :p |
i have lived in north carolina for 9 months and i already like it more then cali.
southern chicks are sweet :) |
The southerners just have impeccable grasps on geography, bless their precious little hearts.
Although the sweet tea sort of made up for it. |
*dies laughing*
Kath, you are tooooo precious. ;) |

Oh, don't lie, Blaine. Everyone knows we're all about cows up here.
Our sorority house is actually a barn, and we keep the cows tied up out back in between us and Kappa Sig. |

Yankees in TARA!!! ::swoon::
Ok you want to know where is "Southern" and where is "not"? Quite simple. If you go to any "home cooking" restaurant and macaroni and cheese is listed on the menu as a vegetable, then you're in the south. I love being southern. Sure we have our problems and our somewhat checkered past, but I wouldn't trade it for the world!! |

does anyone else think those girls in those pictures look like Peeps? tee hee
Only true southerners not only know what a debutant is but have been training to be one since they could walk (ie: coming out parties) ok you are southern when your grandmother served everything in its own little dish on the table - including the salt and pepper....its not food if it doesn't have its own dish! oh and there is only one form of Iced Tea in the south - SWEET! oh sweet home Alabama, where the skies are so blue *sigh* dammit now I'm so very homesick |

I love the South. Some of my fondest memories are my St. Patrick Day Trips to Savannah, a Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, trips to Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Hilton Head, Knoxville, and eventhough traffic is a bitch, lets not forget the fun in Atlanta. I've always lived in the South, while I find northern cities cool to visit, I'll never live anywhere but the South. I'm even making plans for a move further south to the Charleston, SC area because I love it so much. :)
Forever Southern, |
The best thing about being from the South is being called a Southern Gentleman. Well, not on GreekChat, but in real life.
|
I'm not from the south but I've loved the places that I visited. New Orleans is great, Savannah is great and I really like norhtern Florida. I want to move to New Orleans.

question about the south...
Is texas considered part of "the south"??? I have heard conflicting answers, so I want to know if it is or not. For example, does someone from georgia or alabama consider texas as part of "the south"?
ronnie :D |
Texas is like it's own region. There's the East Coast, the South, the Midwest, the Great Plains, the Mountain States, the Southwest, and the West Coast . . . and then there's Texas. :p
