I have decided to rush, 100%!! I even called the Campus Activities office to find out the dates, but they said they didnt have any of that information right now. They told me to check back in a week! Sometimes I feel like I am already greek because of you guys and how much information I already know. I think all of you are great people, and hopefully I will be lucky enough to find girls like that on my campus!!:)

See this is why I want to rush...I want sisters who support me 100% no matter what I do. I love the fact that even on here people are so open, friendly, and supportive. It makes me want to rush so much more.
I KNOW! me too. i'm not a legacy and dont have very many friends in sororities. and the ones i am friends with i dont keep in contact with anymore so i dont really have anyone to talk to about this. but i guess i want that support and closeness to girls that i wouldnt otherwise have with other people. girls that are totally different from me and yet i love them and share that "bond" with them. and i guess i'm looking more for a home away from home. i want to go to school as far away from home as possible (actually the school i'm thinking about is only 2 hours from here) and know that if i've just had a bad day i can always go to one of my sisters and she'll support me. i think what most of you girls have is amazing. dont ever take it for granted because...i would trade shoes with you in a heart beat.

Woo Hoo!! bucutie, you'll have to let us know what campus, and which sororities are there. Then, please, oh please, make sure you give us the details during rush!!

It's a crying shame how we beg for these rush threads, isn't it? ;)

bucutie02 05-07-2003 07:07 PM

I go to the University of Houston, and we have six sororities:
Alpha Chi Omega
Chi Omega
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta
Phi Mu
Zeta Tau Alpha

Yes, I will be rushing as a senior:( but that is okay!! If they like me for who I am, then that will not matter!!;)

I'll also be rushing as a senior...but i still have 2 years. (Double major).

My sentiments exactly. Good luck! I'm so excited already, and as a rush thread addict myself I can't wait to read everyone else's! :D

:) Okay, I'm glad to see there are other upperclassmen (I'm going to be a junior) rushing in the fall! I'll be at University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Here's a list of the sororities they have there:

*Alpha Chi Omega
*Alpha Delta Pi
*Alpha Kappa Alpha
*Alpha Omicron Pi
*Alphi Xi Delta
*Chi Omega
*Delta Delta Delta
*Delta Gamma
*Delta Sigma Theta
*Delta Zata
*Kappa Delta
*Kappa Kappa Gamma
*Lambda Theta Alpha
*Phi Mu
*Pi Beta Phi
*Sigma Gamma Rho
*Sigma Kappa
*Zeta Phi Beta
*Zeta Tau Alpha

a bunch to rush for, not as easy as 6 but at least there's more of a variety! You guys rock, I am starting to get obsessed with GC haha. WAHOO to Sorority Life and Fraternity Life tonight!!! ;)

Megerts 05-07-2003 08:47 PM

Okay, so i've been off and on about this whole situtaion. I just really need to talk to my mom. I just talked to one of my friends about it and she said that it would be really hard as a sophmore because it like takes up two spots (?), but if I want to do it I should go for it. I think I might just do it... All they can say is no and I'll just be bitter. Ekk...

Hey, if any of y'all upperclassmen want to chat PM me... It'll be like an adventure, I promise :p

MSKKG 05-07-2003 08:52 PM

Megerts, I'm confused. At all the universities I'm familiar with, sophomores are treated like freshmen. If anyone is treated differently, it would be the juniors and seniors who generally are "free." That means they are not included in quota. I hope your friend's info is wrong. You ought to go for it if sorority life is what you want. Plenty of members pledged as non-freshmen.

ZetaMelOU 05-08-2003 03:07 AM

wow! things are different at OU. It's almost impossible to get in as a sophomore or above. Maybe it's cause over 900 girls go through rush for 12 different sororities.

"Hi Melanie!"

RedFox 05-08-2003 09:48 AM

Anyone?

Has anyone here rushed as a junior or know anyone who has? Let me know...thats really the only thing I'm concerned about...what do you mean by "free" not meeting their quota??

I went through informal rush as a junior :)

I also have sisters in my chapter who went through formal rush in the Fall as juniors who got invited to more than one Pref. I do not know if our school uses the "free" junior/senior system though and our school has 6 NPC sororities.

P.S. I think the "free" junior/senior thing means that juniors and seniors don't get counted for quota. For example, if quota was 30, and ABC sorority wants to extend bids to 30 freshmen and 1 junior, and 1 senior, that would be ok. (Although I am very new to all the rush rules.. so if I'm wrong, someone please correct me!) :)

It really depends on where you go to school. At many schools, particularly where the greek system is very large, it is harder to get a bid as a sophomore, junior or senior, although not impossible by any means. In addition, some schools will make upperclassmen "free" but many do not. I had never heard of that practice until I started reading GC and it is not common in my neck of the woods.
The best thing to do if you want to gauge your chances, is ask someone at your school what the norms are and the possibility of getting a bid if you are not a freshman. No matter what the answer is, don't let it dissuade you if you really want to go through recruitment. Anything is possible and many upperclassmen find homes every year.

MSKKG 05-08-2003 11:05 AM

That's good advice, aopinthesky. I guess it does all depend on the strength of the Greek system where you're rushing. Harder does not mean impossible though, just like you suggested.

Freshmen seemingly do have an advantage in the longevity department, but that's only an assumption because some freshmen members leave school/transfer/relinquish membership/etc. Personally, I'd rather pledge a dedicated sophomore than a lukewarm freshman.

AZpinkkittie 05-08-2003 11:47 AM

I have been a little nervous about rushing as a Junior myslef. I don't really know anyone in the greek system here, so I don't know how they treat upperclassmen who rush, but I can only hope for the best. bucutie02 I can totally relate!! Finding this board was a blessing, especially when you don't have anyone to go through this with or ask any qustions to. Thank goodness for all you guys, I'd be lost!

AZ-AlphaXi 05-08-2003 12:34 PM

One thing you might try if you are an upper classman thinking about recruitment... give a call to the campus panhellenic office. They probably keep statistics like #of sophomores/# juniors/#seniors who registered and # who received bids.

This might give you some insite into how hard/easy the system is on upperclassmen.

blueGBI 05-08-2003 04:17 PM

rushing

I'm thinking of rushing at Penn State, but I'm not completely sure yet. I will be a junior and I know its possible to get into a sorority as a junior, its hard. I still haven't made my mind up yet.

GMUBunny 05-08-2003 05:34 PM

I don't think our school looks down on upperclassmen rushing, but I think that the reason many of those girls don't get bids is pretty common. Most juniors and seniors have more things that take away from their ability to dedicate the time that being in a sorority requires. Of course, a girl who's a junior and maybe has a job but lives on campus is more likely to get a bid than a girl who *hypothetically* has 2 jobs, a fiance, a mortgage, and a double-major.

**yes, it has happened before

I'll be in Houston for Rush this year...we finally have houses....YEAH!!!! It'll be the first year that UH will be able to rush from houses...anyway...I drift

Rush will start September 11th (I don't know either!) and will continue through the weekend! That's what my old collegiate advisor has said anyway!

MSKKG 05-10-2003 12:59 AM

Isn't it August YET?!? I can hardly wait for the rush threads to start!

bucutie02 05-14-2003 10:36 AM

Okay, on Monday I found out the dates for me....
September 10-14!!!!

Also, this is the first year that the sororities all have houses, and are all close together. I think its called greek row? I dont really know, but im really excited, because that is how I picture it at all the other schools with huge greek systems. However, I know the houses at UH are smaller- but hey, im still happy!!!

MTSUGURL 05-14-2003 11:16 AM

August 15- 20 for me!!! (Or let's hope for the 20th - That's Bid Day!) I'm excited. Even started picking out clothes already. :)

Really important to an Alpha Gamma Delta!!! Squirrels become cute after you join, something in the water.

Just to play devil's advocate: wonder what it would be like to hear the alumna's point of view as well?

Not that I'm volunteering - yet!
