On stand, Faulk denies beating his ex-girlfriend
By WILLIAM C. LHOTKA Post-Dispatch updated: 05/09/2003 10:13 PM Football star Marshall Faulk swore Friday that he never battered ex-girlfriend Helen Dunne. He said he still cares for her despite accusations of abuse and even a revelation that she may have lied about whether a child was his. "I still love her. That will never change. She is the mother of my kids," Faulk, the Rams running back, told the St. Louis County Circuit Court jury that will decide next week whether Dunne is entitled to "substantial" damages. A week of inquisition about their four-year relationship of high spending and high jealousy led Friday to a former baby sitter's revelation that one of the boys for whom Faulk pays a total of $15,000 a month in child support might have a different father. Faulk denied each of eight instances of what Dunne had called physical abuse. But he did admit physical contact with her during at least one confrontation, in October 1999. In that case, Dunne was treated at Barnes-Jewish West Hospital for injuries she said she suffered the day before. Dunne has testified that Faulk accused her of cheating on him, struck her with his fists on her head, choked her and broke one of her fingers. He told the court Friday that he had gotten a phone call from a lawyer friend in Chicago who had seen Dunne with another man. Faulk said he confronted her and she denied it but then admitted having dinner with the man. "I'm out, I'm leaving," he recalled saying. "We talked about it. I turned around and walked out of the room. She jumped on my back." He said he shook her off. "She ran and got in front of the door. I pulled her hands away from the door and pushed her down on the bed. "If I wanted to hurt Helen and that was my intent, I could have," Faulk said. "Because she's beautiful" His attorney, Scott Rosenblum, asked why Faulk would have a sexual encounter with Dunne in May last year at his apartment in Clayton, even though she had already filed the lawsuit against him. "Why? Because she's beautiful," Faulk replied. Dunne's attorney, Charles Todt, questioned Faulk about Dunne's allegations of an incident in August 2000, when Dunne was kept overnight at St. Mary's Health Center for stomach injuries. She said Faulk hit her. He said he was in training camp at the time and got a phone call from her in which she said she had been in an auto accident. Faulk said he had nothing to do with any injury to her stomach. He also denied hitting her in July of that year and giving her a black eye. The next day, the couple went to her family picnic, and pictures were taken, he said. None of the relatives at the picnic were called as witnesses, and no pictures have surfaced, Faulk said in response to Rosenblum's questions. Faulk testified that he proposed to Dunne in fall 2000 and gave her an engagement ring. The marriage, he said, was contingent upon both getting counseling from Bayla Meyer, a psychologist. "We argued about money. We told lies to each other. I felt we needed it. We had issues," Faulk said. He said he called off the engagement because Dunne stopped seeing Meyer. Afterward, he said, he tried to get her to reduce her household expenses to $15,000 from what had been $20,000 to $25,000 a month. When that plan failed, he testified, he filed a paternity suit in hopes a judge would set spending limits. Baby sitter's testimony Jacqueline Bird, the former baby sitter, testified Friday that Dunne had been in relationships with other men, like professional basketball players Andre Patterson and Shaquille O'Neal, while having a relationship with Faulk. Bird said Dunne sometimes asked her to lie to Faulk for her. Under cross-examination, Todt asked Bird, who has known Dunne most of Dunne's life: "When did you first start lying for Helen?" "Probably when she was in high school," Bird replied. Faulk said he had believed Dunne during a paternity suit last year when she said he was the father of three of her four children. But he told the court his trust was shaken by Bird's testimony. Vanessa Antoniou, a lawyer in Clayton, told the jury she had prepared an affidavit and a letter to a prosecutor in which Dunne absolved Faulk and took responsibility as the aggressor for the encounter in October 1999. Antoniou said Rosenblum had called her and told her that Dunne would be contacting her. Antoniou had worked for Rosenblum for four years after getting her law degree. In Antoniou's notes of her meeting with Dunne, she quoted Dunne as admitting she had pushed Faulk, pulled on his clothes and tried to block his departure. Dunne now contends that she never said those things and signed the affidavit without reading it. Antoniou said she would never risk losing her law license by making up a false affidavit for Rosenblum's benefit. The trial will resume Monday in the court of St. Louis County Presiding Judge Barbara Wallace. Jurors may begin deliberating sometime Monday on Dunne's suit and Faulk's counterclaim that seeks a symbolic $1 and says she is lying and abusing the legal process. More Celeb Restaurants
From mtv.com:
NEW YORK — The perks of stardom have always included VIP treatment at your favorite restaurants, but increasingly, being one of hip hop's top dogs means topping your VIP status by opening an eatery of your very own. Following in the footsteps of P. Diddy and his Justin's soul food restaurant chain, Dame Dash, Jay-Z and Fat Joe have joined the restaurateur ranks by opening up supper clubs as well. Dash recently partnered with socialite/DJ Samantha Ronson to open up the Breakfast Club in downtown Manhattan, while his partner Jay-Z plans to welcome friends and fans into his 40/40 Sports Bar when it opens, tentatively on May 28. His spot will feature a mayor-approved cigar room as well as widescreen televisions. Further uptown in his home, the Bronx, Fat Joe has joined forces with successful restaurant owner and longtime friend Jimmy Rodriguez to open a seafood spot this summer, to be named Jimmy's City Island. While the spacious white-draped restaurant will boast what's being called Fat Joe's Corner, which will have a special table for its co-owner, the rotund rapper told MTV News that he will soon have another piece of prime New York real estate to call his own. Joe has bought a space in Manhattan for a future nightclub that he promises will be like "a modern-day Studio 54." The interior will be designed by Ilan Waisbrod, the architect behind Michael Jordan's Grand Central Station steakhouse and a number of Jimmy's restaurants, such as Fat Joe's City Island project. While Joe and Co. had originally planned to call the club the 30/30 Club, in reference to its street address, upon learning that Jay-Z's club was similarly titled, the rapper conceded that he would go back to the drawing board for a suitably festive new name. His as-yet-untitled nightclub is expected to open later this year. —Minya Oh |
Eve's Fall Plans: 'Sex' On TV, Fetish Gear In Stores
From mtv.com:
SANTA MONICA, California — If Eve looks especially happy in pictures from Tuesday's PlayStation 2 party, it's because she'd just received some big news. UPN told the rapper earlier in the day that her sitcom, "Opposite Sex," had been added to the network's fall lineup. So far Eve has only shot a pilot episode, but she said she's looking forward to getting back in front of the camera (see "Eve To Star As Fashion Designer In Her Own UPN Sitcom"). "[My character's] name is Shelly and she's pretty much like me," Eve said. "She has bad luck with guys. Her love life is pretty messed up, but she's successful and very independent but looking to get married. Kind of like me." Eve's manager, Troy Carter, will executive produce "Opposite Sex" with music and TV producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Tracey Edmonds and the show's writer, Bentley Evans ("The Jamie Foxx Show," "Martin"). While she awaited approval on the pilot, Eve developed her Fetish clothing line, due in the fall, and collaborated with Dream on what she called a "hot song" (see "Dream Get 'Krazy' With Loon On New LP Featuring P. Diddy"). Eve has also started pre-production on her fourth album (see "Eve Says Dr. Dre Will Be 'All Over' Her Next Album") and will head to Chicago in July to shoot the sequel to "Barbershop." "Honestly, I don't even know [the plot yet], but it's going to be good," she said. "Everybody's coming back!" —Corey Moss |

Snoop, Method Man Check in for 'Soul Plane'
Thu May 15, 3:46 AM ET "Soul Plane" has been cleared for takeoff, with rapper-actors Snoop Dogg and Method Man coming on board to star in MGM's urban version of the classic 1980 comedy "Airplane!" Snoop Dogg will play the plane's pilot, and Method Man will portray Muggsy, the airline owner's best friend who is put in charge of the plane's business class. Production is set to begin in late June. Jessy Terrero will direct. "Soul Plane" reunites Snoop Dogg and Terrero, who hails from the music video realm and directed the rapper's "Tell It Like It Is" video. The two took a recent trip together to Brazil. During the making of the "Tell" video -- when Terrero learned that he had nabbed the directing gig for "Soul Plane" -- Snoop Dogg revealed that "Airplane!" was his favorite movie and expressed a desire to join the new venture. Terrero and Method Man worked together when Terrero directed the video to the rapper's song "Round and Round," featured on the soundtrack to the 2001 comedy feature "How High," starring Method Man and Redman. Snoop Dogg is in production on Warner Bros. Pictures' "Starsky & Hutch." He is set to embark on a tour with rapper 50 Cent and rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers and is developing an urban version of "The Longest Yard," based on a real-life football game pitting a team put together by Snoop Dogg against a team from the Los Angeles Police Dept. Terrero is attached to direct the project. Method Man next stars in Miramax's "My Baby's Mama" and is attached with fellow hip-hopper Redman to the studio's comedy "Jail Breakers," a remake of a South Korean film. Reuters/Hollywood Reporter |
Pharell looking for love.......

Are There Wedding Bells In Pharrell Williams' Future? He Hopes So 05.14.2003 7:53 AM EDT Pharrell Williams Photo: Roc-A-Fella "The only thing I need now in my life, man, is ... my wife." — Neptunes' Pharrell Williams NEW YORK — Even though Neptunes member Pharrell Williams doesn't have the kind of soulful voice that's been honed through years of singing in the church, his club beats and high-pitched hook crooning have helped him shut down the music charts as well as the airwaves. Because of this, it seems inevitable that the Virginia producer, whose popularity and visibility grow by the day, would soon drop a solo album, right? "That's yet to be determined," Pharrell said Thursday night after producing and singing on a new track for ODB (see "Ol' Dirty Lays Down Track With Pharrell Before Turning Into A Pumpkin"). "I don't see myself as a singer. I just try to express myself. I feel better and more comfortable with N.E.R.D., but I'm glad [my new single] 'Frontin' ' is getting [a warm ] reception from everybody." "Frontin'," which features Jay-Z, is one of the lead cuts from the Neptunes' compilation LP, Star Trak Presents Clones, due this summer. The track showcases the famed producer taking the lead, singing most of the verses while Jigga guest stars with a short rap. "I know that I'm carrying on/ Never mind if I'm showing off/ I was just frontin', " Williams sings. "You know I want you, baby/ I'm ready to bet it all/ Unless you don't care at all/ You know I want ya." Pharrell made it clear that he is definitely not frontin' on the song, and his real life feelings have spilled over into his music. He has a void he needs to fill. "The only thing I need now in my life, man, is ... my wife," Pharrell explained. "... I'm close to Jesus. I got the job that I want. My mom and dad are happy. My little brother is a pro out there in San Diego, skating for two different companies, [and] my baby brother is doing well in school. Wherever you are, baby, it's written already. Let's find each other. Let's steal away, take the kids out of school and go to Disney World. I'm there now." Pharrell has his friends and peers seconding his emotions, at least on wax. Snoop Dogg's first real love song, "Beautiful," took over the airwaves, as has the Jay-Z track "Excuse Me Miss." As we all know, Pharrell produced and sang about being with Ms. Right on both records. "We need to get to love," said Pharrell, who is also planning to produce songs on Jay-Z's upcoming Black Album. "There's a lot of violence out there." Pharrell and the fellas aren't the only ones talking about relationships over Neptunes beats. Clones will also feature a track from the rapper sometimes known as "God's Son" along with his girlfriend. "We got this new Kelis album coming out," Pharrell disclosed. "It's called Tasty. She's gonna kill it. Her and Nas did a song called 'Popular Thug' together [for the Clones album]. They're making some great statements about themselves. It's incredible. We got a Clipse album coming out [later this year], Hell Hath No Fury. I'm excited. This is so great, man." Besides Nas, Kelis, Jay-Z and Dirt McGirt (a.k.a. ODB), Star Trak Presents Clones will also feature Busta Rhymes, Super Cat, Spymob, the Clipse, Fam Lay, Roscoe P. Coldchain and Usher, among others. The video for "Frontin' " will be shot in Miami May 21 with Jay-Z. —Shaheem Reid |

The Smith's Come to Television
By Kristin Vaughan, BET.com Staff Writer Updated on May 15, 2003 -- Megatalented couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith will produce a new sitcom called, "All of Us," that will appear in UPN's new fall television lineup, UPN announced Thursday. An excited Pinkett Smith spilled the beans a little early when she appeared as a guest on "Late Night with David Letterman" on Tuesday (May 13). She told the late night talk show host that she had just received a call that delivered the good news that a new television show based on her and megastar husband, Will Smith's, family life "just got picked up." "All of Us," which the Smith's will produce together, is a blended family comedy that is based on the life of the hot celebrity couple. "The show is about a wife and man and new wife trying to get along" for the sake and love of a little boy, Pinkett Smith told Letterman on Tuesday. Smith and his first wife, Sheree Zampino, had a son, Trey, before they divorced in 1995 and he remarried Pinkett Smith in 1997. Pinkett Smith said that television is in need of more shows that deal with families that have been through divorce and blended families formed after remarriage. "Sheree and I have done such a good job of trying to overcome differences like two grown women." "Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce and we don't have enough" shows that deal with it, Pinkett Smith said. "All of Us" will be part of a new Tuesday night comedy lineup on UPN. |

AP Photo White, 58, suffered the stroke while waiting for a kidney transplant needed because of complications from years of chronic high blood pressure. Shaherah White said her father must be stabilized before he can undergo a transplant operation. "My dad had surgery May 1 to place a catheter in his arm," she said. "He had a stroke ... that affected his speech and the right side of his body, but he is in great spirits." The deep-voiced White was hospitalized in August 1999 for a blood pressure problem that forced him to cancel several performances. He was undergoing dialysis treatment to stabilize his condition. "He's had a minor setback, but have no fear, he'll be fine," Shaherah White said. "He will definitely be performing again." She spoke at a news conference on plans to rename South Park Recreation Center after her father, who grew up in that section of Los Angeles. White, whose popularity reached a peak in the 1970s, won two Grammys (news - web sites) in 2000 for best male and traditional R&B vocal performance for the song "Staying Power." |

Tyra 's new show.
From the Sacramento Bee. They have a big interest in Ms. Tyra.
A model life? It's not all that By J. Freedom du Lac -- Bee Pop Culture Writer Tyra Banks is among America's top models -- and a trailblazing one, at that. The towering 5-foot-11 beauty who used to say she wanted to be "the black Cindy Crawford" realized her dream by rising to supermodel status in the 1990s, when she became the first African American woman to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated's annual swimsuit issue and the first African American to earn a contract with Victoria's Secret. Banks has been in more magazines than she can count; endorsed plenty of products, from cosmetics to basketball shoes; and drawn five-figure paychecks just for walking up and down a runway for an hour or so. At 29, though, she's starting to shift her focus. She hasn't walked away entirely from the modeling world. She's still signed to Victoria's Secret, and she'll be featured in an upcoming issue of Elle. But Banks is spending less time worrying about how she looks and more time thinking about how other people look, as creator and executive producer of the new reality-TV program "America's Next Top Model." The series, premiering at 9 p.m. Tuesday on Channel 31, centers around 10 women who are competing for a big break -- not to mention a Revlon contract, a guaranteed appearance in Marie Claire magazine and a deal with Whilhemina, a top agency. The wannabes will live together in a New York City penthouse and go through "supermodel boot camp" as they try to prove they're the next Tyra Banks -- with Banks and a panel of three other industry experts voting somebody off of the show every week. Great work ... if you can win it. Banks talked about the show, the industry and a certain superstar forward from the Sacramento Kings during a conference call with reporters. She is, by the way, the only TV executive producer who has ever graced the cover of GQ in a bikini. Q: You've done so much stuff in your career; what made you want to do this show? A: I've always had an affinity for television. It has a lot of power and it reaches the masses. I wanted to get across this message about the modeling world and being a top model and what it takes -- trying to dispel myths about it. Q: Everyone on the show is female. Did any males try out? A: We were thinking about males, but we decided for this first season to have all females. I hate to say this, but the modeling world is one of the only occupations where women make a lot more than men. Q: It's quite an eye-opener, the sequences in the first episode with the bikini waxes and all that screaming. Did you start the women off with waxes and photo shoots in the freezing cold to show that being a model isn't just fun? A: It was important for me to put the girls through what real models go through. You see models shooting on the beach, and you just assume it's 90 degrees. But sometimes, it's 20 degrees. That is the difference between a model that's just kind of OK and a top model. A top model makes you think that they're having the best time in the world. As far as the bikini waxes, I can say that I've never had one in my life -- and never will. But every other model has. Q: Can we expect to see any cat-fighting? A: There's 10 women and there's only two bathrooms, so there's definitely conflict. If I lived in there, I'd have some conflict, too. Q: You've said you want to dispel myths about modeling. Are they myths about the job itself -- that modeling is not as glamorous as people think? Or is it the public's perception that models have low IQs? A: All of that. One of the girls on the show is a med student. She's drop-dead gorgeous and she also wants to be a doctor. There's also a full-figured girl who's studying to get her master's degree right now. A lot of people think models are stupid. It's not that they're stupid. It's that (many are) uneducated -- similar to athletes. Models are pulled out of school early, because this industry and our society worship youth. It makes them uneducated -- but not ignorant. Q: How do you think the parts of the show dealing with appearance will impact younger female viewers? A: That's always been a thing I've had to balance when it comes to the show and when it comes to being a model, period. I used to get so many letters from girls talking about how insecure they were looking at me and my pictures. So I decided to start a camp called T-Zone. I take 60 girls up into the mountains (near Los Angeles) every year, and we talk about beauty and body image and sex, dating and relationships. I dispel a lot of myths about my industry, and about how I look physically and all of my insecurities. That's what the show does, too. Yes, it's glamorous. But the modeling world is nothing but entertainment. I hope that girls understand that they should open up the magazine, enjoy it and then put it down -- just as a guy will watch a Lakers game, enjoy it and then turn the TV off. You'll see how these models look when they wake up in the morning, and everybody ain't pretty. Hopefully, it will show girls that the modeling industry is about creation. Q: When you first got into the industry, there were some top models -- and I'm thinking of one in particular (Naomi Campbell) -- who didn't want to see you succeed because she didn't want to be replaced. But here you've created a show that could help somebody take your own place. You must not be worried about finding work. A: I've never been worried about that. I think my experiences with the person you're talking about helped me realize that there are so many spots, and everyone has their time to shine. By that person being so negative to me, it made me open up my arms even more. When I was at fashion shows and I started getting more famous, if I saw a young girl sitting in the corner who was very nervous and insecure, I would go up to her and give her my phone number in Paris and say, 'Call me.' I tried to be as supportive as I can. I think this show is only an extension of that. My mom told me to always just compete with myself. I'm all about helping. I want to see somebody else be a star. I'm tired. (Laughs.) Q: Finally, we haven't seen you at any Kings games lately. Are you and Chris Webber still "friends." A: Uh, I'm not going to talk about that. But I love Sacramento. It's so beautiful. Yeah. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Clinton Assails Bush at Commencement
by Barbara Powell, .c The Associated Press JACKSON, Miss. (May 19) - Former President Bill Clinton accused President Bush of spending more time fighting the war on terrorism than on domestic issues during a commencement speech at Tougaloo College. ''I supported the president when he asked for authority to stand up against weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but we can't be forever strong abroad if we don't keep getting better at home,'' Clinton said Sunday to a crowd of about 8,000. Clinton also criticized Bush's position on affirmative action and tax cuts just two days after the President formally kicked off his re-election campaign. Clinton stayed for the entire three-hour ceremony and shook hands with each of the 144 graduates at the relatively obscure historically black college. But this private school of 800 students will also be the site of the Aug. 13 Democratic presidential debate. Judging from the warm reception to his every blast of the Bush administration, Clinton had a lot of supporters in the crowd - which included former Democratic governors of Mississippi, Ray Mabus and William Winter. On the stage with Clinton were Governor Ronnie Musgrove, and U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., a Tougaloo graduate and a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. ''We Democrats in Congress miss you,'' Thompson said, referring to the Republican majority in both houses of Congress and the Democrats' inability to derail Bush's tax cut plan. Clinton, who commands as much as $350,000 a speech, was speaking at Tougaloo for free. Clinton's attack on the president comes as Bush - who in the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll had an approval rating of 71 percent, down from 77 percent during the war in Iraq - is drawing criticism from Democrats for his tax cut proposals and support for ''race neutral alternatives'' to affirmative action. Clinton laughed long and heartily when student government president C.J. Lawrence assured the crowd that selecting Clinton was not an example of affirmative action. ''Yes, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby were also considered, but I assure you Bill Clinton was selected solely on his merit,'' Lawrence said, drawing a big round of applause. Despite the laughter, Clinton spoke seriously about what he said is the need to show that America takes care of its citizens of all races and all income levels through affirmative action and after-school care programs. Clinton suggested that Bush's priorities are fighting terrorism, not domestic issues. The Bush administration, Clinton said, ''is still focused on defeating terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, and that's good, but not good enough. The power of our example is just as important as our military might.'' Clinton also took aim at the growing budget deficit and Bush's tax cut proposals - all issues that are being raised by the nine Democrats who are running for president in 2004. Sunday's crowd at Tougaloo made it plain who many of them would like to see in the White House. ''I think if you were to take a vote here, they'd vote for Bill Clinton if he was running again,'' said Jerry Keahey, class of '61. Clinton, who sang along with the choir to ''Lift Every Voice and Sing'' and chatted at length with many of those around him on the podium, also took time to take a jab at Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss. Lott lost his Senate Majority Leader position after his comment in December that the nation would have been better served if retiring Sen. Strom Thurmond had been elected president in 1948 when he ran on a segregationist platform. Referring to the 134-year-old college's need to raise money to renovate its old buildings, Clinton suggested that Lott might want to help them raise money to make up for his remarks. ''Reach out, don't give up on anybody,'' Clinton said. ''This is Sunday. Ask Lott to give you the money for the buildings. He said he was going to spend the rest of his life making up for the little trouble he had.'' |

Michael's New Look
Wacko Jacko's kinky afro
By Tara Conlan, Daily Mail 19 May 2003 He is legendary for his efforts to transform the looks that helped him find fame. Afro Jacko: CLICK image to enlarge So it was something of a surprise to see Michael Jackson turning the clock back by more than 30 years at a 1970s themed party. Guests gasped as the 44-year old singer arrived at a Miami restaurant wearing a giant Afro wig, rhinestone-studded jacket and leather trousers. The hairstyle was almost identical to the one he wore as the young lead singer of the charttopping Jackson Five in the early 1970s, performing hit songs such as I Want You Back, ABC and I'll Be There. As his solo career progressed, Jackson underwent plastic surgery and had his skin tone lightened, removing all trace of the cute teenager who once sang alongside his brothers. At the party - to celebrate the 70th birthday of family friend Al Malnik - the father of three seemed happy to go back to his roots. He stayed at the party at The Forge restaurant - restored by Malnik in the late 1960s to become Miami's most glamorous showbusiness haunt - for about two hours on Saturday night. One guest said: 'It was like he was back in the 70s. Michael didn't dance, unfortunately, but he was jigging around in his seat.' Jackson, who claims he was 'betrayed' by interviewer Martin Bashir in an ITV documentary earlier this year, has released home videos in an attempt to counter the negative publicity he attracted. These are to be shown here soon on Sky. http://images.thisislondon.com/v2/sh...03_288x450.jpg |

Buh-bye Lisa Gay Hamilton of the Practice
McDermott, 5 others leaving 'Practice'
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) --The Boston law firm of Donnell, Young, Dole & Frutt is undergoing a dramatic downsizing. Dylan McDermott, Lara Flynn Boyle and four other cast members of "The Practice" are exiting David E. Kelley's ABC legal drama next season after their options were not picked up by David E. Kelley Prods. and 20th Century Fox TV. The slimming of "Practice's" actor payroll comes as the Emmy-winning series faces at least a 50 percent reduction in the license fee paid by ABC. The show endured a rocky seventh season -- ratings took a dive after a midseason time-slot shift to Monday -- and secured an eleventh-hour pickup for 2003-04 on condition that the estimated $6.5 million license fee be halved -- though ABC committed to returning the show to its longtime 10 p.m. Sunday home. McDermott will guest-star in at least four episodes next season, and it is unclear if the other exiting cast members will make any appearances. In addition to McDermott and Boyle, the departures include original cast members Kelli Williams and Lisa Gay Hamilton. Marla Sokoloff, who joined "Practice" during its second season, and Chyler Leigh, who signed on this season, also are gone. "Due to economic and creative realities, many key people will not be returning, including Dylan," Kelley said Monday. "It hurts, professionally and personally. This is perhaps the finest group of actors and people one could ever hope to work with; I hope for all of them to recur if possible, and if I'm lucky, I'll get to work with them on future projects as well. I'm indebted to each and every one of them." While budget cuts were expected given such a substantial license-fee cut for an old show, the exodus came as a surprise because five of the six actors whose options have not been picked up -- McDermott, Williams, Hamilton, Sokoloff and Leigh -- were flown to New York last week to appear at ABC's fall schedule-unveiling presentation and party. "For the past seven seasons, we've successfully relied on David E. Kelley's creative vision for 'The Practice,' and we'll continue to rely on his vision for the future of this series," the network said. "While we're sorry to see these talented cast members leave the show, we're excited to discover what David has in store for 'The Practice' this fall." Sources said the cast reduction was Kelley's idea and is part of his plan to rejuvenate the veteran show, which won the outstanding drama series Emmy in 1999. It is understood that Kelley's camp has taken note of how other long-running dramas, including NBC's "Law & Order" and "ER," have used cast changes as a creative spark to keep a show fresh and even bring in new viewers. Several new regulars are expected to join remaining "Practice" cast members Camryn Manheim and Michael Badalucco -- both Emmy winners for their roles -- Steve Harris and Jessica Capshaw. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

I LOVE The Practice!!! I wrote an ANRGY letter to ABC earlier this year for changing the time slot of the show. I had a plan for Sunday nights and I KNEW that I had to be ready for The Practice @ 9pm. Then, they pulled a switcheroo and moved my show to Mondays. WTF was ABC thinking? There was NOTHING on TV on Sundays and The Practice set me up for Monday mornings. No one ever remembered to watch the show on Monday nights which caused the ratings to drop. NOW THIS?!?!?! WTH is The Practice without 90% of the original cast? What are they thinking? I love "Eugene" (and I can live without "Jimmy"), but how can he carry the show alone? And on top of that, they slap me in the face by making "Eugene" have some sort of relationship with "Jaime." They couldn't find a sista to hook him up with? The Practice is just perpetuating the stereotype that successful, professional Black men have to get white women.... but I digress. ABC makes me sick!!! I would strictly boycott that station if it weren't for My Wife and Kids. I am about to write to David Kelley and ABC because I am FED UP!!! |

'Idol' favorite a really big talent--and that's the problem
May 20, 2003 BY BILL ZWECKER Concerns about the health of Ruben Studdard --who many believe will win the second "American Idol" crown Wednesday--have surfaced after media reports that music uber-mogul Clive Davis is deeply worried about the singer's girth. Davis allegedly fears that Stud-dard's 350-pound weight could lead to the kind of critical health crisis Davis' longtime friend and associate Luther Vandross is coping with. The singer is lying comatose and near death following the stroke he suffered April 16. Though Vandross slimmed down drastically several times, many thought his years of obesity and yo-yo dieting contributed to him suffering the stroke. On numerous occasions, Stud-dard's lethargy onstage--assumed to be caused by his size--have generated concerns within the "American Idol" operation, but two very highly placed "A.I." honchos played down those reports Monday. They also denied that the enormous pressure of being one of two finalists on the show is any different than the kinds of pressures Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini faced last year. "The only difference is that 'American Idol' is now a huge part of the national popular culture landscape. Appearing on the show turns these kids into instant celebrities, and the finalists are now so well-known to tens of millions of people," a key production staffer said Monday. As for Ruben's weight and stage presence, another staffer said, "Certainly, we're all concerned about Ruben's health. Everyone knows the long-term effects of being tremendously overweight will eventually lead to serious health problems. That's something Ruben needs to start working on--and he knows it." Another source close to Davis confirms that the recording industry legend is "deeply, deeply distraught about Vandross' condition. ... They are such good friends, and Clive is releasing his new album," but the source insists it is wrong to automatically merge Davis' thoughts about Vandross with his plans to produce the "American Idol" winner's first album. "After all, it might just as easily be Clay [Aiken] who walks off as the winner Wednesday night." That having been said, "Clive--like so many who know and love Ruben--understands losing weight will be very important for him in the long term." As for Vandross, Davis will release his new album, "Dance With My Father," on his J Records label in early June. He shouldn't of said anything! QTE |
In order to prepare for his role as Blues legend Robert Johnson, Sean "P.Diddy" Combs will do something he has never done--pick cotton.
"I'm going to work on a farm, learn about sharecropping and picking cotton," Diddy told the New York Daily News. "I swear to God. I'm doing cotton picking." Production for the movie starts in September. Johnson was labeled King of Delta Blues, in spite of recording only 29 songs prior to dying at the age of 27. The film will be shot on location in Mississippi and directed by Tim Blake Nelson, whose last work was the Holocaust drama, The Gray Zone.; Combs has received critical acclaim following his roles in the Monster's Ball with Halle Berry and the independent film Made. He is said to be taking acting classes in hopes of perfecting his craft and landing more roles. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ James Brown Pardoned by South Carolina Soul legend James Brown was pardoned yesterday by South Carolina officials for his past crimes in the state. Brown - who served a two-and-a-half-year prison term after a 1988 arrest on drug and assault charges, and was convicted of a drug-related offence in 1998 - was granted a pardon by the Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. The 70-year-old "I Got You (I Feel Good)" star said in a statement, "God bless America on this beautiful day. I hope my pardon shows the youth that America is a beautiful country." Brown unsuccessfully tried to get a pardon for his crimes in 2001, but yesterday's decision means he is fully forgiven from all the legal consequences of his crime and his conviction. State Representative Ken Kennedy, who spoke on Brown's behalf, says the pardon will allow the singer to share his experiences and help others. He adds, "I've been a fan of James Brown all my life. I've listened to his music all my life. I think this is something that he deserves. "He has been one of our great entertainers in this country. He's done so much for the country and for me as a young person growing up here." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Michael Jordan Tried to Steal My Date -- interesting article ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
Matrix Director's Wife Airs Dirty Laundry -- Literally
It should be the best week in Matrix Reloaded director Larry Wachowski's life. But with exquisite timing, court papers have emerged at thesmokinggun.com that probably make him feel like he's in the Matrix itself. Wachowski's wife, Thea Bloom, is suing him for divorce -- and it's going to get ugly. Her court papers not only reveal all his financial dealings with Warner Bros. but also suggest that recent gossip in the British press about Wachowski being a cross-dresser could be true. To wit: In the legal papers, Bloom says the couple's decision to separate was mutual and "based on very intimate circumstances ... which I do not elaborate on at this time for reasons of his personal privacy." But Bloom is more interested in money than undergarments, and with good reason. According to her papers, the Wachowski brothers received $16 million for their work on The Matrix movies recently -- and it's unaccounted for in her divorce. Interestingly, if Bloom had waited until this fall to file for divorce, she might have passed the magic 10-year mark under California law. She and Wachowski, she claims, were together from 1984-93 and then married in 1993. A judge will have to decide if that constitutes 10 years of marriage. In the meantime, Bloom will be watching The Matrix Reloaded box office very carefully this weekend -- and maybe doing an inventory of her unmentionables as well. |
I heard on the radio yesterday that Trenyce will join the cast of Girlfriends next season as one of the girl's niece. I'm not sure how true it is, but I'm just telling y'all what I heard.

Michael Jackson Hospitalized Briefly
Thu May 22, 5:30 AM ET Michael Jackson was hospitalized briefly after falling ill on the same day he was scheduled to give a deposition in a copyright lawsuit. Jackson was hospitalized in Indianapolis on Wednesday for observation and treatment before the deposition began, Brian Oxman, an attorney for the Jackson family, told The Associated Press. Jackson was released after a couple of hours and boarded a private jet Wednesday evening to return to Los Angeles, Jackson spokesman Stuart Backerman said. Jackson, 44, "was not feeling well and was feeling weak," Oxman said in a telephone interview. Neither Oxman nor Jackson spokesman Stuart Backerman knew which hospital Jackson was taken to. "He has, in some occasions in the past, not eaten when he should," Oxman said. "He can become very concerned and nervous at depositions. He doesn't like lawsuits, and it makes him ill to have to cope with litigation that people seem to heap on him." Jackson arrived in Indianapolis on Tuesday for a deposition in a lawsuit alleging that the Jackson Five used the name of another Gary band and two of their songs without license. The deposition was to be given in a meeting with attorney Norman Reed, who is representing Gordon Keith, the man who signed the Jackson Five to his Gary-based Steeltown Records in 1967. Keith has said he received no credit for tracks that appeared on a 1996 album, "Pre-History: The Lost Steeltown Recordings." Robert Meyer, who represents Jackson at the Chicago law firm Swanson Martin & Bell, has declined to comment on the copyright lawsuit. Keith and musician Elvy Woodard, accuse Michael, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon Jackson with infringing on the trade name Ripples & Waves, which was the name of another Gary band during the 1960s. |
