I yelled also. I'm really going to miss Luther---he had an unique vocal style that won't be duplicated. He was my favorite male singer.

#1 Leading Lady 07-02-2005 12:52 AM

R.I.P Lutha (Big & Small) I just spoke to my mother and she was like the man who should have been your daddy died and I'm like who Lutha? She said Yeah and I think I blacked out. I immediately came here to GC for confirmation. My heart is broken and my condolences and prayers go out to his mother, nieces and family. They say the death of your child is the hardest. Poor woman has lost all of her children. It makes me sad thinking about it. I am now going to bed now....this was too much info for me to process this evening. Pouring some Kool-Aid out for Lutha.....drip drip drip

MeezDiscreet 07-02-2005 02:19 AM

i almost cried. i am truly, truly a fan of luthers. he was my second fav. recording artist (second only to prince). just the other day i was listening to the luther fan site on launchcast. i'm so saddened by this. i was hoping that he'd get well and record again. he will be truly missed but never forgotten with his timeless hits like "wait for love," "supastore," and "since i lost my baby."

christiangirl 07-02-2005 02:58 AM

Ok, we're totally cut off in the store, no radio or anything, so I just read the news in your posts. I don't know, I know I was too young to truly appreciate some good Luther, but I still want to cry. Growing up, Luther was "the only old guy my parents listen to who's actually cool." I wanted "here and now" played at my wedding (still do). I'm so sad, I don't know what to do...I think I'll go watch some Madea, I don't like this feeling.

TonyB06 07-02-2005 02:30 PM

Rest in peace, Luther. The musical style he exhibited will not soon be duplicated, and that is our loss.

and for my money... "A House Is Not A Home" will always be the gold standard of Slow Jams.

Kloud9 07-02-2005 02:49 PM

When I heard the news yesterday evening my heart hit the floor, literally. Words can never describe how much Luther meant to me. I don't think I prepared myself for this day, even after the stroke. I just knew he was gonna recover!!! A part of me was waiting for someone to announce this as another hoax but the more I saw it on TV the more the walls came crashing in. I feel like I've lost a near and dear loved one. I have everything Luther has ever written and some. This man was my absolute favorite singer of all time and I don't think I'll ever listen to music the same. My sister called me to see if I was alright cause she knows how I am about Luther, I had to pull the car over and let the tears flow. I STILL can't believe it. His funeral will be a sad one indeed. First Rick, now Luther. No one will ever compare to Luther, no one. I can't imagine how his mother is feeling. All of his siblings preceeded him in death. Lord my Luther is gone. This man I grew up listening to in every relative's household. This man, whose songs I always said would play throughout my future wedding reception. I even fantasized about him being there in person to serenade my husband and I. This is too sad. Lord my Luther is gone.

AKA2D '91 07-02-2005 03:10 PM

So True. I just feel sooooooo bad for his mother. All of her chilidren are gone. Now, she must take care of her grandchildren. Luther was taking care of them in the absence of his siblings.

:(

#1 Leading Lady...you ain't right! :o LOL
When I told Mr. 2D Luther had passed, he said which one, big or little Lu? He was soooo wrong as well. :o

Now, Luther can join Barry White in "music heaven." Do you all realize Barry White passed away July 4th weekend 2003? :o

To anyone going to Essence: please share the tributes the artists at the festival have for luther.

I was doubly hurt because we JUST lost Ronald Winans and I just KNEW Luther was going to get better. I feel so bad for his mother because I know she's taking it hard. I just still can't believe he's gone.

Why have I spent the weekend looking for as many of his CDs that I could find? Should have already owned them, oh well.

*sigh* Yall remember the first tribute they gave him back in '03 at the festival? That was the first time I heard Usher sang ("A House is not a Home) it was beautiful. I also LOVED how Ruben redid "Superstar" :(

I am still in a state of shock about Luther's passing...he will truly be missed. It was weird because the last few days Luther had been on my mind, not like I knew him personally or anything like that....but for some reason he had been on my mind, and the news came on Friday....and I just can't beleive it. A truly great one is gone.

I remember one summer I was in B-more, NY and Philly, and I saw Luther each time he was there in those cities and I was there....there was nothing like a Luther concert. The man could really put it down. I remember back in '88 I was on my way to see Luther and Anita Baker...yeah that crazy drama tour and I never made it because I was in car accident...damn so many things are coming to mind now. I saw him all the time when he came to Philly. I remember the tour with En Vogue and the drama #2, and the Boyz II Men tour...man he is going to missed.

Funeral Arrangements & Update on Untimely Death

*Funeral services for Luther Vandross will be held Wednesday and Thursday in New York at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, located at 1076 Madison Avenue (at 81st Street). Public viewings are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Friday in New York at Riverside Church, located at 490 Riverside Drive.

As the world continues to mourn the passing and celebrate the life of Vandross, Fox News.com’s Roger Friedman is reporting that the late singer was caught in the middle of a disagreement over his method of care at the time of his passing.

“What will come out in the next few days will be the story of how his manager, Carmen Romano, fought to keep Luther on track with his medical care,” Friedman writes in his column. “Opposing Romano were Vandross' mother and sister,” who, according to a source, “did not keep appointments he was supposed to have. It was a constant struggle to get Luther the attention he needed."

Friedman says he was told that Vandross was having physical therapy at the time of his death.

"They were walking him and he just collapsed," a source told him.

Vandross, 54, died at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, N.J. The cause of death was not revealed, but a statement released by hospital spokesman Rob Cavanaugh said that Vandross "never really recovered" from a stroke two years ago. The singer suffered from diabetes and severe swings in weight.

Artists at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans Friday spoke warmly of the vocalist, whose romantic ballads are most likely responsible for thousands of babies birthed during the eighties.

"I'm gonna try to give a hand to Luther Vandross one more time," John Legend said while onstage, just hours after hearing of the singer’s death. "All us people making slow jams now, we was inspired by the slow jams Luther Vandross was making."

Aretha Franklin spoke of his loss onstage before singing “Precious Memories,” while Alicia Keys said a few words in his memory before dedicating her hit single, “If I Ain’t Got You.”

"I can't believe it, I'm so sad," Keys said backstage. "There's something in the back of your mind that wishes someone was playing a big prank on you. That's how I felt when I found out. I couldn't even believe it. I'm happy to say I can call him my friend. I think he's such a wonderful man that's left behind such a beautiful legacy. That's something that will truly inspire generations to come. We will absolutely miss him. We pray for his family, that they heal, and ... My goodness, this is so sad."

Ruben Studdard said of Vandross backstage: "Luther was a big influence on me. I'm blessed to be able to have seen him do his thing and have him influence me musically. I love him. He has been and continues to be a great inspiration to me. He will be truly missed."

Patti LaBelle offered: "He was one of the greatest voices that ever sang a song. He was one of the sweetest men I have ever known. And he was one of the best friends I have ever had. I'm so happy that his legacy will live on forever. ... Luther was one of a kind and will never be forgotten. I miss him more than words could ever say."

Luther’s everyday fans are feeling the loss just as deeply. His passing has led to the sudden and dramatic movement of his music on Amazon.com. According to a release from the web site, his CDs dominated the site’s “Movers & Shakers” list for Music, making up 22 of the top 25 spots within 24 hours of his death. On Amazon.com’s Top Sellers list for Music, “Dance With My Father” shot up from No. 2,835 to No. 3. “The Night I Fell in Love” went from No. 48,400 to No. 6, while Vandross’ “Greatest Hits [Original Recording Remastered]” jumped 57,887 percent from No. 4,639 to No. 8.

That is so very sad.:( Luther did not have a nurse to get him back and forth to appointments? :(

I was so sad to hear about Lutha! For some reason, I just thought that he'd recover. His family is my prayers :(

9dstpm 07-06-2005 06:57 PM

I'm sitting in my office playing his greatest hits CD on my computer. I'll probably play all of his CD's this week. I had just walked into my best friend's house and we got on the computer when we got the news of his passing. In Memphis, they played all of Luther's songs all day Saturday. I'm still stunned that he's gone. :( My condolences and prayers to his family, especially his mother.

jitterbug13 07-06-2005 07:52 PM

I remember my mom, her friend and my aunt and uncle seeing Luther in Columbia back in '88 with the Anita drama. Anita had just dropped out of the tour and they replaced her with Pebbles (now known as Sister Perri). I wanted to go, but I was too young (8 or 9). I was so excited to hear her talk about Luther and Pebbles and all I remember her fussing about how bad Pebbles was!

Good thing he came to my hometown when I was 14 and saw him with En Vogue in '93. They dropped out not long after they left.

Question: on the Fox News story, they mentioned his sister and mother. I thought all of his siblings were deceased!

Anyway, I do miss Luther a lot and I wish I was in New York to express my coldolences (sp). I think and pray for his mother and the rest of his family during this difficult time. I try to think about is as God needing another angel to sing in Heaven.

AKA2D '91 07-06-2005 10:49 PM

Didn't Luther and EnVogue "fall out" too?

I wonder if Luther and Anita ever "make up"?

I still can't believe it. I saw some pics from the memorial service.

I want to post them here, but don't know if it will be acceptable. Did anyone make it to the service? A few of my friends went, they were out in that rain.
I want to create a classic Luther cd as well, but some of the songs I don't know the titles too. Can I get some assistance?

RIP Luther

I still can't believe he's gone either. He was truly a powerhouse of talent. Luther had some pretty big shoes that no one can fill.

My heart goes out to Mrs. Vandross.

Even as I viewed the clips from the service, I was still waiting on someone to say Ah HA! Joke's over! I just can't believe he's gone. I really and truly can't. :(
