A Steaming Hot Mess.....
Alright Sorors and Pham,
This show is sad. First, I really don't think that the marketing was done well. I did not see the show advertised on any other channels but BET. The film looked low-budget. Why is it that "Real World" gets a huge budget, but this show suffers greatly when both shows are under the same company. I must say that I am uneasy about a bruh appearing on the show. But, I trust that he will keep his "head about him," through the episode. A while back there was a bruh on the "Road Rules" show, he represented well. Lastly, the young lady that folks refered to as "No Draws" is a mess. I mean, her business is all out there. I wish they would not show women in that light. She craves attention and is most likey dealing with some personal demons. What are your thoughts about the show, if you watched? This may be steps in the opposite direction for Black folks. And you know how we feel about Backwards steps! |
Thanks for the recaps
I missed this because of the Lakers and "Azucar" Shaq  coming back last night. But from what I've just read, I'm not sure if I actually want to view this.
And I'm also not surprised, once again, that BET would run a program like this. Remember, Bob Johnson has constantly said that he's a capitalist, he's market driven and social consciousness doesn't come into play. |
Now let's be real y'all
The problem is... yOu did see a real depiction... Terrible ain't it!
Freaky babes with no draws.. Two chicks fighting outside the club. Sneaking back in the dorm. Making (chef: sweeeet luv) on twin dorm beds. The religious dude who's still a freak. The keep it real dude who doesn't use real soap. TELL ME Y'ALL DON'T REMEMBER THESE PEOPLE FROM SCHOOL?!!!! I do. It's just that we're older and more mature now. BUT I REMEMBER ALL THESE FOLKS. |
Honestly, DJJukebox, I see your point. I really do, but it is still embarrassing to see folks act like this on TV.
Ok and can I please get a story line and better cinematography. You can chat with Kinda today on BET.com. I wonder if she has a sister named SORTA but pronounced SO AR TAY!!  |
*Beep* We interrupt this thread to bring you an important GC Service Announcement...
I'm not sure why there were TWO threads for this, but they have now been merged. Please, PLEASE, do a search PRIOR to posting a new thread. CT4 had responded to djjukebox, but his post was in a completely different thread. I was . That's exactly why we don't post multiple threads with the same topic.
We now return to your regularly broadcast thread. |

hello
is anybody on the BET.COM chat with KINDA???
|
Ok. Can we say THROWN TOGETHER. Because that is exactly what happened with this show.
Who are these people? Where are they staying on campus? What does the suite look like? I mean can I get a peep? Just a little look see? Who rooms with whom? Who is that R.A.? What was that fight sceen all about? Did we really need to see two girls fighting that weren't even part of the show? C'mon now. What a tragedy for BET. |

Embarrassing is an understatement. BET should be run off of television.

I just felt sorry for the child's parents. Especially the father, I can just imagine his embarrassment. If I were him, her behind would not be attending any school that I work for. Sistergirl was a mess. I can't stand when people wear house slippers outside! Not to mention the big furry ones. I won't even get on her nickname and promiscuity. The Dean's daughter. *shaking head*
I know what sorority she WILL NOT be joining. That high ethical and moral standards clause has killed many an interest. |

jabari uh reminds me uh of the guy we've all seen and uh we all feel sorry for because he has no uh friends but we don't want to be his friend because he's uh weird
kinda is the girl that runs wild and garners an unsavory reputation her freshman year and then comes back to school deciding she wants to pledge but can't seem to understand why no one will give her a chance. delano--if he's going to be that big could he at least wear some clothes?? i was eating a bowl of chili when i saw him in that wife-beater with the extra flesh hanging out of the arms of the shirt and with all that hair all over his back and i straight lost my appetite the r.a. seems a bit sugary their "palace" doesn't hold a candle to what you see on mtv. bet is definitely viacom's "red-headed step child." |

Will you love him better now that he is DELANO?!?!!? :p I mean I know he is not AceDawg, but maybe you will see him in a different light. :o http://www.bet.com/images/contesttit...itle012304.jpg http://www.bet.com/images/contestmai...Main012304.jpg Thanks Dancerella.:) ETA: BET is THEEEEEEEE JANKIEST SO and SOs. Only these clowns will have one pic with 2 codes!!!!! |
Thanks to you CT4 for your posting help!:D

Yeah, I thought the RA was a bit Sugary also. I glad someone caught that.
I am looking at this picture with Delano and a Que shirt, I am guessing that will come out in later episodes. But guess what......I won't be watching. |
I don't really know what to think of the show. I think that we have been too tainted by reality tv and that the casting is trying too hard to fit into certain categories...the slut, the jock, the beauty, the nerd, etc.
I don't think the interactions will be natural because there is still too mcuh other stuff going on. (sidebar)Why do they have that pitiful looking pregnant girl on there? I just really think it's poorly produced and developed. It could have been a great opportunity to show black college students and their struggles with racism, overcoming obstacles, and still excelling. But instead, we have a bunch of country bumpkins, stereotypes, and ignorant behavior. |
it's the real world folks
In all of it's ghetto, triflin, messed up glory! Reality Shows are about creating drama first so they don't PICK the people who are fully functional to BEGIN with. Dysfunction is their business.
And FYI, this is not a movie. This is not Malcolm X, or Driving Miss Daisy, or something that sets out to show how persecuted we are, and oh don't we just always overcome and aren't we the most special, entitledcakes. It shows people being people in all of their truly messed up glory. None of these folks are that different from people you probably know in real life. With the exception of No Panties, you have probably done some of the same dumb stuff in your own life that these kids are getting sooo criticized for doing on tv. In real life people DON'T always excel. In real life people make mistakes. In real life sometimes racism wins. In real life black folks can be both ghetto and country and are often both. If you want to see perfect black students being perfect and doing everything they're supposed to do BET also shows a movie of the week periodically that will be more to your taste. And I don't LIKE BET. I hate it. But I think some of the criticisms here are slightly ridiulous- black folks have wanted something like this forever- if the people on it don't act what you see as being the right way then that is not their fault. It's on the people being filmed. |
The movie is Juwanna Mann with Miguel Nunez, Jr. and Vivica Fox.

I'm not looking for perfection, but more than a satisfaction of popular stereotypes. I shouldn't have to watch movies to see black people doing positive things. That happens in real life, on a frequent basis. So, why shouldn't the ONE channel that's supposedly entertaining us, show more of those instances and leave us feeling good about ourselves at the end of the night? I don't see a problem with wanting that. Yes, there are black people who are ghetto and country. BET shows them on videos and award shows every day. So, I guess this show is just following suit instead of treading a new path. |

If they wanted a "palace", Mrs Edmonds probably could've have pushed for it but if SU will let them use the dorms, why not go ahead and show how ppl act in dorms despite dorm restrictions. About the film quality, I think they're going for a "real",documentary-ish look. They did the same thing with HITS. The show is embarassing but ppl do act like that in real life. At least we have Jacquese (sp) acting right on RW versus the white characters who are acting up. It'd be nice if they had a different range of characters but I guess they wanted all the extremes. 2 or 3 characters without issues would be good. About travelling 30 miles to party, that happens in ATL. Everything's just so far apart sometimes. |
If you go into the show EXPECTING it to be negative, why do you get SO upset when it is? If you hate BET so much for not portraying African Americans in a positive light why would expect them to pull a 180 and put on something totally different? I just don't understand it.
I watched the show and I think that anyone who has gone to an HBCU(or any college for that matter) knows one of these characters. Is it negative because they showed that freshman chick acting up? Is it negative because one of the characters is pregnant? Is it negative because that christian football playa' has two girlfriends? Are people embarassed because these people really exist on hundreds of campuses? With that said, my take on the show is that its garbage. |
I really hated the footage of the chicks fighting in the parking lot. That bothered me. If you are doing a documentary of up and coming African American college students, don't sprinkle it with something as ridiculous as that. I just think that footage should have been canned, it had nothing to do with the story.
I attended FAMU and know people like the characters. These people exist. I just think that this show should be countered with another show on the African American students at Harvard and Yale. Follow them around and see what kind of struggles they are faced with. Hell, follow me around my first year of law school this fall. I will represent the race well. I just feel like we already get so much negative press (evening news, cops, music videos, etc), can we get something positive for once? SOMETHING! |
Cool. I didn't realize that you are an SU jag.

In the next episode they say the weird kid...I know everyone knows someone like this in their life...smells really bad. They said he smells like onions and mustard. Can someone explain to me how you can smell like onions AND mustard? :) lol

BO is the worst. There was a fonk-kay teenager behind me on a plane to Los Angeles. As we were deplaning, he lifted his arms up to get stuff out of the overhead bin and I thought that I was going to throw up. My mom had a really bad cold and had been stopped up for days. She turned to me and asked, "Do you smell onions?" It reminded me of Richard Pryor's trip to Africa and he said the fonk from the taxi driver was just whippin' him' all in the face. Ol' boy's Right Guard went Left!

Riot at Southern over College Hill Student
Students react to reality show
Rioting and lewd behavior greets cast member By JACQUELINE DIX and DOMINIQUE GIBBS January 30, 2004 After the premiere of the new Black Entertainment Television reality show, College Hill, students went on a rampage damaging university property, raiding dormitories and attacking one of the cast members. Students began shooting fireworks, throwing trash cans from every floor (one was set a fire) and male students ran through the halls of female dormitories. When cast member Kinda Andrews arrived back on campus, she parked her car in front of Camille Shade Hall where she attempted to get out. After a student shouted, "There’s No Drawls," students flocked around her car and began rocking it from side to side. An East Baton Rouge Sheriff officer had to mace two male students to prevent them from entering her car. Students gathered in front of S.V. Totty Hall where they discussed and celebrated the explicit actions of Andrews, a freshman mass communication major from Baton Rouge. "It was crazy out there," Andrews said. During the situation Andrews sat calmly inside her car smiling and waving to the rowdy crowd. "I was overwhelmed that so many people were out there. I saw all the students outside as a warm reception," said Andrews. Andrews was escorted and had to sneak into the back of Shade Hall where Director Barbara Campbell ordered the lobby to be closed. Andrews said that she did not attend class on the next day nor did she leave her room and may not for a while until things calm down. "I am happy about the show and was very aware that I was going to receive mixed reviews, " said Andrews. Regardless of students’ reactions Andrews was more concerned with her family’s reactions. "My family is very supportive and are going to be there for me 100 percent," Andrews said. Andrews who perceives Madonna as her idol said, "Controversy is what got Madonna where she is today. I am all for controversy." She is excited about the show and has no regrets. |
