Sorry, no clue. What do you have in mind?

Since you bumped this thread, I read back through it. You know that cat cross stitch I mentioned back in December? ... still working on it :( I will be a little old lady before it's done!

deltaphi94 06-19-2003 12:22 AM

If you mean styrofoam like you'd use for silk flower arrangements, I don't know if Hobby Lobby has them. They do carry sheets of crafty foam stuff the size of a sheet of construction paper.

For the flower arrangement type of styrofoam, maybe you could try a home improvement store - like Lowe's - around where they have insulation. (suggestion from my hubby.):)

texas*princess 06-19-2003 12:27 AM

thanks for the suggestion deltaphi (and mr. deltaphi!) !!!

I was thinking of the styrofoam like for flower arrangments in large sheet form!

I thought it would be really fun to make a personalized memo board with it!!

I figured styrofoam about 3/4 of an inch thick (or thicker) would make it light and at the same time easy to cut with a knife. I could buy some really cute fabric, make sure it is fitted tight enough and hot glue or super glue the fabric to the board.

get some cute coordinating ribbon and make the little memo board-like 'grids' and add the finishing touches with buttons and other little embellishments.

deltaphi94 06-19-2003 12:46 PM

I just got home from Hobby Lobby, and thought I'd let you know that they do have rectangular pieces of styrofoam... 1 1/2 or 2" thick and 36" long. Hubby said it would be about the same size at a home improvement place, but probably cheaper too.

aephi alum 06-19-2003 12:52 PM

Random question for my fellow crafty folks... :)

Anyone know what the current airline security restrictions are on the following items?

Cross stitch and needlepoint: Are needles still ok? I figure scissors are right out.

Knitting needles? I heard somewhere that they're forbidden.

Crochet hooks? (If I can't knit I may have to learn to crochet :p )

I'm flying in a couple of weeks, and I'd like to take my cross stitch on the plane... I used to do that all the time (pre-9/11) and attracted great interest among my fellow passengers and the flight crew. :)

texas*princess 06-19-2003 12:54 PM

wow deltaphi thank you soooo much!!! you totally rock!

I know I could go to any store and buy a memo board, but since I'm not taking classes this summer, and still not working, I need to be entertained!!

I *finally* finished my cross-stitch bookmark & it's soooo cute!!
There's not one little square on that bookmark that doesn't have a stitch, so it took me awhile!

It's really cute, it has a little lion head at the bottom, an azure blue diamond at the top with a violet inside it, the ADP letters vertically in the center in azure blue, and 3 white diamonds on the left of the letters, and 3 white diamonds on the right side of the letters. The background stitches are all a deep navy blue color.

My original idea for the diamond at the top was to cross-stitch a miniature version of our black diamond badge, but that didn't work out as planned ;) I went back and took out all the stitches and put a violet in there instead.

The total of 6 white diamonds on the sides of the greek letters are for our six original founders of the Adelphean society! I'm really excited!

texas*princess 06-19-2003 12:56 PM

aephi alum: Last summer I was told I couldn't take my cross-stitch on the flight :( (at least not the needles)

It might have changed since then though

deltaphi94 06-19-2003 01:09 PM

aephi alum... sorry, I haven't flown in years.

texas princess... you're welcome! I always love finding new excuses to visit my favorite crafty store. What better reason than GC? lol It helps, too, that I needed a hair cut and Hobby Lobby just happens to be right there. :D Your bookmark sounds incredible! How did you do the lion? I was looking for a small one that I can convert to cross stitch. Finally found it, but I haven't managed to graph it yet. Not a biggie at the moment since hubby has me pulling my hair out over a Saturday Evening Post for his birthday...

texas*princess 06-19-2003 01:13 PM

deltaphi, I went online to find a lion small enough to cross-stitch on the bookmark and found a pattern here:

http://www.dawnsxstitch.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/leo.htm

I just used the lion head part and didn't cross-stitch "Leo" or the zodiac dates :)

Drat. It's hard to cross stitch without a needle...

"Take this plane to Baghdad or I'll... I'll... I'll cross-stitch a pillow for you!"

btw, that Leo is cute :)

ETA: Thanks for posting that link - she has some very cute patterns. I even found a giraffe :)

texas*princess 06-19-2003 05:56 PM

lol aephi alum! you're hilarious!!!

you're welcome for the link!

here's another one I like to pick ideas from:

http://www.freepatternsonline.com/

^that site also has some patterned greek letters :)

deltaphi94 07-19-2003 03:24 AM

I need motivation!! I've been working on a project for hubby that just won't end... and I really want to toss it aside. Can't do that, tho. So, someone please give me ideas to restore my patience. :)

pinkyphimu 07-19-2003 03:37 AM

what are you doing????? that would help me think of ideas to make it more fun to do!

deltaphi94 07-19-2003 03:51 AM

spoiling hubby lol. he has this 'man room' plan, and asked me to stitch something for him a couple years ago. it was huge and took like 5 months to finish, then he decided to torture me again. had to be (about) the same size, related to hunting. yeah. so, i found this kit on ebay for a norman rockwell xstitch. dummy me didn't bid on it and missed out. showed him the picture in the completed auction. HE went and begged me to find it somewhere else. of course, i did. sooo.... i am now trying to finish this stinkin norman rockwell of a man and his hunting dog companion. i'm sure it will look great when it's finished, but ugh. i started it maybe 3 months ago, and it's just now 1/2 finished. in one of my (many) late nights recently, i noticed that the stupid dog isn't lining up w/ the rest of the piece, and I SO don't want to take 1/2 of it out! hence the desire to toss it aside. of course, it may be easily fixed, but i can't bring myself to look at it any more.

sorry for the rambling. :D

This thread reminded me (again!) how much I desperately need to make a scrapbook!!! I've been saving up stuff for one, and it has turned into a drawer...but I never seem to get around to doing it! Ah well, such is the life of me!

pinkyphimu 07-19-2003 04:03 AM

well, i have only finsihed one of the xstiches i have ever done, so honestly i am not hte one to help with this. the rest are in a bag on the bottom of the closet. is it a stamped xstich or counted? if it is counted, i am definately no help bc i don't have the patience for that...

-take it outside and stich while you are hanging out in the sun.
-the faster the print gets finished the soon the hubby can hang in his man room and get out of your hair...j/k.

deltaphi94 07-19-2003 04:26 AM

all i have to say is... i'm glad we're sisters. :)
i'm kind of bad about finishing my xstitch of momentary choice, but it's a lil different when it's for hubby. he tends to pester me a lot, especially when i'm trying to work on it.
and, for the record, it's counted. w/ about 50 or so colors.
if only your idea about the man room were true! he has this crazy plan that i'm going to paint it for him, then he'll put new flooring of some sort in and hang these things. sure, the flooring won't be an easy job, but it's his room. therefore, he should at least help paint. at least, that's how i see things.

texas*princess 07-19-2003 06:37 PM

Best of luck with the cross-stitch deltaphi94!!!

Most all of my x-stitches are smaller patterns, but I've never done one with 50 different colors  Best of luck with that!

Usually when I'm working on a larger pattern & have to count blocks for a large area of space to start stitching again, I count the space about 10 times to make sure I got it right (those blocks are so tiny!).. and even then, sometimes I end up a little of... I try my best to compensate for it though.. like if I'm off by a teensy few that isn't too noticable, I'll condense the middle section inward or outward depending if I under- or over-counted my space.

deltaphi94 07-19-2003 09:40 PM

thanks texas*princess... i'm gonna need that luck i think. it was going so well, and i found a mistake. fixed that one w/ no problem, but this is much bigger. i'm hoping that i've just miscalculated and the oops won't be as bad as it looks right now.
the finished size will be about 10x12" and is one of the largest i've done. (hubby's other one is about 9x15") before that, i stuck with 8x10 or smaller. what was i thinking? lol

dzsaigirl 07-20-2003 12:46 AM

I still have all of my pics, placecards, notes, rush nametags, etc. from DZ in a box...I have been telling myself I will scrapbook it, but I just haven't. I even have the agenda from my very first meeting! I just can't seem to trust myself to pick layouts that I will be happy with for the rest of my life, so I keep procrastinating!

Also, while waiting for pix to develop in Wal-Mart the other day I discovered that they have a craft section (I did not know this, as my discount shopping is done at Target...). This gave me the huge urge to learn to crochet. I am ADHD, so I am always fiddling anyway...might as well get something productive out of it!

So is it easy? It looks interesting and what is really exciting is the selection of different kinds of yarn and the different colors. Do you think this is something I can do?

It not too difficult. I taught myself how to crochet from a book I picked up at Walmart, and after making a few trial dishcloths, I crocheted a hat and scarf.

Next I'm going to take up knitting, which seems like it will be much more difficult.

aephi alum 07-20-2003 09:19 AM

Good luck with that x-stitch deltaphi94!

I feel your pain. I've been working on the same darn x-stitch for over a year now. I think it's 14"x15" - it's the cat-on-a-bookshelf one I described earlier in this thread. Lesson learned: NEVER stitch on black aida cloth.

BetaRose, knitting is not hard to learn at all. I find crochet much more difficult... I've tried it and let's just say the results weren't pretty.

lol...aephi alum, I thought your lesson learned sounded familiar, so look what I posted shortly after the thread was started...

"Note: I will NEVER stitch on black again, and I hate the metallic flosses."

I'm sure you'll make it through your project eventually, with many headaches behind you. I definitely know what you're going through!

TigerLilly 07-20-2003 12:26 PM

OK, what is this Mod Podge stuff??? Sounds perfect for what I want to do! I've made collaged diary covers for myself, and wanted to do other things but couldn't figure out how to cover / seal it. Could I get this stuff at Hobby Lobby?
And I'm also addicted to scrapbooking. Actually I'm addicted to taking pictures and scrapbooking was the only way to control the massive amounts of photos!

texas*princess 07-20-2003 12:36 PM

Tigerlily -- you can usually find Mod Podge at most all crafty stores including Hobby Lobby.

There are so many types of Mod Podge!

I'm not a big Mod Podger (is that a word? :p) because I don't know more about it..

DWAlphaGam 10-30-2003 04:53 PM

*bump*

I finally finished a big afghan (it fits a queen-sized bed!) that I've been crocheting for about a year, and it inspired me to look for you guys' crafty stories. :)

BTW, for beginning crocheters, here is a really good site with a bunch of tips and photographs of how to do the various stictches:
http://crochet.about.com/library/blb...M=ss11_crochet
I learned to crochet when I was 8, but I have no idea how to do all of the fancy stitches since I've only finished 2 projects, and I found that site to be extremely informative.

texas*princess 10-30-2003 05:48 PM

wowie! congrats on completing such a huge project!

embossing

I was wondering if anyone has tried embossing as a craft hobby?

I randomly thought of it earlier today since I was thinking of Christmas cards (yes, already!). I thought it would be neat to make my own and have seen some beautiful ones that were made by using 'embossing' methods.

What would be the best way to get started?

texas*princess 11-11-2003 02:45 PM

bump bump bump:D

aephi alum 11-11-2003 02:58 PM

Sorry, never done embossing...

But since you bumped the thread, I will mention that I just discovered a yarn store in my hometown! They haven't been open very long. They have every type of yarn imaginable (including some that I have no idea what you'd make with it) and knitting and crochet patterns, also cross stitch and needlepoint patterns and supplies.

I see a maxed-out credit card in my future... :p

honeychile 11-11-2003 03:40 PM

I love crafts, but haven't had much time to do them lately.

But I was in my pastor's study, and he had "Amazing Grace" done in counted cross stitch on his wall. It was THE most beautiful piece I've ever seen! Has anyone ever seen a kit for this?

deltaphi94 11-11-2003 06:55 PM

I haven't seen an "Amazing Grace" kit in a while, but you might check around at Hobby Lobby (if you have one), Michael's or JoAnn Fabrics. If they don't have it, you may be able to find one online -- maybe even eBay.

I did a google search, and found one very similar to the one I saw. The only difference was that the one I saw had more blues than burgundies in it. I may take a trip to the local Pat Catan's tomorrow!

Oh, this will be for me, not my pastor! ;)

edited to try to add the photo, but it's not cooperating!

HI There,

One of my sisters just started selling Close To My Heart stamps and scrapbooking stuff so I decided to have a party to help her get her business going. We ended up doing Christmas cards with embossing as our project and I absolutely fell in love with it. Once you know the way you want your cards to look it's really easy to do - can't believe I didn't do it earlier but it always looked way to hard. Only warning is that it can get expensive by the time you get the embossing gun/warmer, the ink and the various powders you want. Saying that though, between my mom and myself we bought the stuff to do our own cards and I can't wait until finals are over so I can get working on my cards.

Also, I'm throwing a 50th anniversary celebration for my parents at the end of January. I'm trying to come up with an idea using the embossing stuff for favors for the party. That is if I have time to make it since I'm doing a creative memories scrapbook for them to have on display at the party.

So many projects I want to do and so little time to do them.

Carolyn

Has anyone ever used a computer program to help make their cross stitch designs? I saw quite a few on ebay recently and was wondering if it was worth it.

AZ-AlphaXi 11-22-2004 03:42 PM

Yes .. I have a computer program (pattern maker) that I use. It was real easy to make my own set of greek letters. On the other hand, importing pictures has been problemmatic ... to many colors .. bad choice of colors...

carnation 01-22-2006 10:29 PM

Yeah! I finally found this thread!

Today at Michael's, I discovered an irresistible cross-stitch pattern--a wreath of vegetables. It will take me forEVER but is absolutely perfect for the TV room.:D I wonder if I can cross-stitch and cruise GC all at once?

texas*princess 01-22-2006 10:44 PM

carnation that sounds awesome! you'll have to post a picture of your finished product!!

aephi alum 01-22-2006 10:45 PM

You can.

Women are more predisposed to multitask than men are. I've been known to watch TV, read GC, and cross stitch simultaneously... drives my husband crazy. (He couldn't multitask if his life depended on it.) I sit on the commuter rail and listen to my iPod and cross stitch... other riders are convinced I'm listening to Enya or something, when I'm actually listening to Linkin Park or Evanescence. (I've been asked.) So, "x" away.

Oh, the cross stitch pattern I mentioned when this thread was first started 3 years ago? Still haven't finished the frelling thing...

texas*princess 01-23-2006 12:08 AM

my best friend invited me to this scrapbooking party that is held the 2nd weekend of the month. it's from 6pm till midnight. everyone has dinner and then gets scrapping away! I'm really excited... my first one will be in february. this gives me a great opportunity to finish my 1st college book, then maybe another time I can work on my UNT one.. then Violet's puppy book.
