that's sad that "going greek" is being considered the most accurate.

you know, because its a hot piece of mess and all.

Sure, it portrays both sorority life and witchcraft in a bad light, but the movie is still a lot of fun to watch.

I'm glad my sorority experience isn't like that. I'm pagan and didn't "go Greek" until in my late 40s.

I think I remember this one! Two sisters rush, and the one goes to the Popular Girl sorority, and the other goes to the "eerie" house? Sort of like Carrie Pledges.

Honeychile, that's the one. I not only remember it, I have it on video (Yeah, I know, take away my man card now:rolleyes: ). Two sisters go to college, one joins the popular group (Alpha Nu Sigma) and the other the "spooky" (Phi Epsilon Delta = nicknamed Pigs, Elephants and Dogs by ANS) house. Spooky house sister goes all "Carrie" on the popular house after they pelt her with mud and rotten tomatoes. Add in Shelley Winters, Morgan Fairchild (as the b****y popular sorority girl), a demon dog, then get some popcorn and let the good times roll!

If anyone is interested in watching the "Frat House" documentary discussed a couple of posts back, it's up on the site YouTube. Bad quality and broken up into pieces, but better than nothing. :)

http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...=search_videos

The link should bring up all 7 chapters in reverse order, but if not, just search for "frat house: chapter." Have fun.

Anyone besides myself seen/own a copy of it?

It was once supposed to be an hour long special with the two directors (one directed Old School afterwards) current NYU students going from college to college trying to get on the inside of Greek Life and the "pledging" process. The movie won a Sundance Film Festival Award for documentary (until it came to light that what it is in may not actually be all true).

Eventually they stumble upon Alpha Tau Omega at Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania.

(Some facts here may be wrong but this is what I have found researching the topic via the internet and talking with a member of a another fraternity at the school while the movie was shot.)

The two producers paid ATO $1500.00 to shoot the movie in their house where they would pledge them and other Brothers would participate in the pledging process for them to make their documentary. The Brothers who participated received $50.00 each for their work. Everything seen in this movie is according to my source at the school completely TRUE. Which is unbelievable!

If you haven't seen the movie, good luck finding it, but it is worth checking out if you ever get the chance. It really would shed negative light on the Greek system across the nation if this ever aired on National TV. Since the movie ATO at the school has lost their charter and are no longer a Fraternity on that campus.

-Pat-

Someone uploaded it on youtube.com and broke it down into seven parts, that's where I saw it. Yeah, I don't think all of it is true, either.

What I did find interesting was that they say in the movie that the ATO chapter agreed to let them film only if they didn't say the school's name or the fraternity's name. As I was watching it, though, it was completely obvious to me that it was ATO, there's a ton of stuff around the house that gives it away and you even catch a few glimpses of guys in ATO shirts.

this movie is called "The Initiation of Sarah." Hey, when you have Morgan Fairchild AND Morgan Brittany in the same flick, you know it's got to be high quality!! If you have the Plex channel, you can probably catch this one since they run it quite often.

bamabelle99 10-17-2006 12:17 PM

Not sure if this has been said, but The Initiation of Sarah has been remade and will air on The Family Channel as part of their 13 days of Halloween. It stars the girl that played Cheyenne on Reba....(I'm incredibly embarrassed that I know this.):o

Morgan Fairchild is in this version as well:eek:

ETA: If I had read the above post I wouldn't have posted this. Sorry!!

I saw this in my Tivo Guide!! Can't wait to watch it!

Anyway, I recently viewed "Sorority House" from 1939. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031955/

Very sweet old-fashioned movie... I enjoyed it even though the girls end up not joining a sorority at the end. (Whoops, sorry about the spoiler!)

I think I've seen that move, like when I was little. Is there a scene where she's all bitter and talking with her grand father (maybe uncle?) and she and her friends discuss how they're going to exclude all the sorority girls from everything but then it's pointed out they'd be hypocrites??? Or something like that! :D It was a good movie if it's the same one.

Yup... that's the one!

It was the girl's father... and they were going to create an "anti-sorority," after none of them joined a sorority.

DeltAlum 10-18-2006 06:58 PM

Has anyone mentioned Zorba?

RedRover 10-24-2006 12:00 AM

A couple of thing that I want to add...

About movies and hazing, the incident that is at the climax of FRATERNITY ROW is based on a real incident that happened at UCLA or USC in 1959. CSI
used a variation for one of its episodes set at fictious Western Las Vegas University.

On a lighter, add TOO MANY GIRLS to the list of movies. The 1939 musical introduced Lucille Ball to Desi Arnaz. If you can image Lucy as a sorority pledge. Unfortunately, she looks her age, 26 or 27 in 1938/39.

tld221 10-24-2006 10:31 PM

no one's gonna throw in the ABC Family original drama "The Initiation of Sarah?"

cause clearly i watched it.
[/sarcasm]

ETA: ok clearly GC is all over it. never mind.

I own Too Many Girls, it's interesting to see the vast changes in sorority life since then. This is back in the day when women went to college to find husbands rather than to get an education. But, I have to be an old movie snob here (I seriously watch too many for my own good), the movie was made in 1940 and Lucy was 29 (Desi was 23). However, this was before the days of I Love Lucy and Lucy didn't have her crazy redhead reputation yet, she was still a B-list Hollywood glamour girl. I wouldn't exactly say "she looks her age," though, there was a lot of gray area back then in movies about ages, a lot of teenagers looked older, older people looked younger, etc.

Adpigal 10-25-2006 10:47 PM

what about these?

Has anyone mentioned Going Greek? I personally love PCU. Also the new one Accepted, that was cute. Van Wilder also has Greek life.

Adpigal 10-25-2006 11:18 PM

I forgot about Pumpkin!

Rain Man 10-27-2006 03:04 PM

I don't think anyone here have mentioned "Stomp The Yard", scheduled for release in January 2007.

Other Greek movies are "[In The Name Of] Tha Brotherhood" and "Tha Sistahood" and its sequel "Tha Sistahood 2", directed by Big Walt Anderson.

Van Wilder's getting a sequel! I love Van Wilder but I think I'll wait for Taj to come to DVD before I see it. It looks pretty much the same but set in England.

I rented Going Greek last week. Though mainstream Greek life is relatively foreign to me, the scenes and events looked very plausible and I figured there was a degree of accuracy of what mainstream Greeks do.

Oh, and I found it to be funny and the characters to be very believable.

mlevy86 01-06-2007 05:15 AM

two other movies are as follows:

1) is called Fraternity Row- This is an independent filmed in 1976, which discusses greeklife from the 1950s. It is one of best and most accurate films I have seen.
2) The Tall Lie- I am having trouble finding this title but I know it was from the 1950s and features teh professor from Gilligans Island

Can I rent Fraternity Row? I mean is it at a Blockbuster video? I would like to see that.

Fraternity Row is a great movie, saw about 10 years ago. It randomly came on tv one day and i have been looking for a copy of it ever since. If anyone knows where to get it please share.

No DVD or VHS listed on Amazon. This is the kind of movie that might turn up as a "One Dollar DVD" some day. It was a good little movie though. I can't remember the last time it was on TV.

It takes so little to please her...

This is one of my absolute favorite movies. One of the funniest scenes was when Elle told the legal team that she couldn't reveal the client's alibi because it would break the bonds of sisterhood. They all went  but I am sure that all of us greeks understand her situation exactly.

SoCalGirl 01-07-2007 03:02 PM

I think Legally Blonde came out in 2001, because she's in the Harvard Law Class of 2004.

I suppose most have seen some of the ads for "Stomp the Yard", which seems to focus on BGLOs and step shows.

As I am not knowledgable about either, I'll leave it to others to comment on how well it does this.

I just saw Going Greek last night. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it was nowhere near as amazing as Animal House. Better than the cover description suggested at least. It's up there with PCU as far as greek movies go on my list.
