I've had several unsuccessful attempts to make it through a John Updike novel. His tone is needlessly pretentious in its intellectual insularity. The characters exist as if they simply live inside their own minds and that is the only reality there is, or that counts. Maybe I'm not where I should be in my own development to appreciate his writing.:)

On of my all time favorite books is on someone's list. I luv Tryin to sleep in the bed you've made by Debarry and Grant. I guess cause I could really relate to one of the characters.
I noticed that everyone who hated For the Love of Money by Omar T, had already read Flyy Girl. I'd never read it and enjoyed FTLOM. But the sequel Boss Lady-sucks!!!It tells the story from the perspective of Tracy's niece. I enjoyed Taste's like chicken but hated Child of God by lolita files. It is a departure from her normal fun-drama type stuff. It's about incest, voodo and mistakes being repeated through generations. Well written, not my style at all. My first Zane book was Afterburn. I fell in love with Zane......but then I read a few of her other books :( no substance at all. Just explicit sex and not much substance. |
PUSH is the most depressing and disturbing book that I've ever read. :( :(

I am an avid reader and some choices that we have listed are just wrong.
All That and a Bag of Chips is okay. I felt the same way and after i finished it turned out to be very good. The sequel is even better go back and give it a try. Nikki Turner book. It was written in the 80's and they did wear coogi in the 80's it just wasn't as popular with every day people. That was just for the drug dealers and they girls. Trying to sleep in the bed you made was a great book. On my list as one of the best books I ever read. The authors other books were great as well. The only book I have not finished in all of my years was These Bones Are Not My Child. I just couldn't get through it. Great thread :D |
Lately I've been really dissapointed in the selection of novels written by African Americans......I'm tired of reading and seeing the sex me down...shoot me up....my man is cheating on me books. That's all you see now...but I pretty much agree with all the authors/books you all listed earlier

"You should know better" by Tina McElroy Ansa. Awful,
Awful,Awful. I could not finish it. I should have heeded the title as the beginning of a warning: You should know better than to read this novel! |
I thought Flyy Gyrl was alright, but I wasn't blown away by it.
*ducks in case anyone throws something at me* :( |
