God I love Hockey! :) |
The way the wings have been rolling along lately, who will stop them?
I see Detroit and vancouver making the west finals and Ottawa and New Jersey making the east finals. Detroit will earn their 4th in 7 years by beating NJ. |
What exactly is a "power play?"
|
A power play is when one team has a player in the penalty box, making it 5 on 4. The Team with 5 players on the ice is on the "power play", while the team with 4 players is on the "penalty kill".
|
Ok, I LOVE hockey (Go Lanche), but can anyone explain this +/- rating thing?
|
You start a game at 0 if you are on the ice and a goal is scored against you you go to -1, if another goal is scored you goto -2. If you are on the ice and your team scores a goal you add one. The +/- ratings are added up over the season, so when you look at a player like Alexi Yashin of the Islanders who is -20, it means that 20 more goals have been scored against the NYI when he is on the ice, then have been scored for them.

If anybody else has any hockey related questions I, as well as others i'm sure, wouldn't have a problem answering them. It is a rare occurance that i don't know something rulewise (I was a ref for a while).

because they only have 2 eyes and they are subject to human errors. Also it is a dumb penalty if it against your team or a lucky break if it is against your opponent, is it not?:D
|
Plus, because Mario and other finese players have been crying over the roughing over hte last couple years the league decided to crack down....or something.......Im sure our Candaian TKE will comment.....it was just somehting i've heard
Oh, and BTW, Why don't people like Gary Bettman? |
The call that the official are (were) cracking down on is the Obstuction call. Basically you can't interfere with a player who doesn't have the puck, that is called as either a) interference (if the infraction occurs in the defensive or offensive zone) of B)obstruction (if the infraction takes place in the neutral zone it is then followed the type of penalty, ie: Obstruction-Holding or Obstruction-Hooking) here is the official rulebook definition of obstruction:
Obstruction: shall be defined as any tactic by a player who attempts to or who restrains an opponent who is not in possession of the puck, or who physically prevents an opponent from moving freely in the direction he wishes to go. The term "obstruction" shall be used coupled with the appropriate foul (holding, hooking, interference, tripping) when the obstruction offence occurs in the neutral zone. As for bettman he is a tool, more concerned about the business side of the sport than the actaul sport itself. Up here there is a huge feeling that bettman wants nothing to do with the smaller markets, like Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton. Since they compose half of the Canadian Teams, he gets a bad rap. |

Same with the Lady Bing, right?

I do like that new diving rule. Now it means guys like Kariya and Fedorov can't put forth a stellar acting job to pick up a cheap penalty on the opposing team.

You still game teke? If T.O goes out before Ottawa you can post again until next season...we're talking 6 months :o Same deal for me if Toronto lasts longer than Ottawa.... |
Yeah I'm game
What do you think of the fact that bryden's deal fell through for the sens? you think Melnyck will buy the team? |
Quote:
hey i didn't catch the score of the game last night, do you remember what it was? :D |
Is the Hamilton offer done by Tim Horton's? I know that they bidded for the team originally, but that Ottawa won. The Leafs will never let a team go to Hamilton, neither will Buffalo, it's to close to both of those cities. Even if Buffalo ships off to Oregon, it's way to close to Toronto (like 45 minutes from the west end of the city), as great as the rivalry would be, it just ain't gonna fly.
|
I don't think Hamilton has the kind of pop. base or status to hold an NHL anyway...can't even fill the stands for their bulldog games. I've heard Melynik is prepared to spend min. $130 mil for the team and corel centre, even tho it's only worth $85. Not sure why Peltz is interested, i'd prefer a can. buy the team.

New converts to hockey...
If anyone else on this thread is a fairly new convert (like me), there is this great book called The Girlfriend's Guide to Hockey by Teena Spencer that explains the in's and out's of the game.
Oh, and one more thing: Let's go CAPS! -Nicole |

Who's on your jersey
Hey guys,
Help me out. I want to get a new Canucks jersey (I have the old school skate one, in orange and black with Nedved on it - don't ask me why Nedved I am still trying to figure that one out). I figure after 12 years I should up grade but I am torn on who to put on the back of my jersey. Trevor Linden or Todd Bertuzzi? I have always been a huge fan of Trevor and he is Mr. Canuck, but Todd is an amazing hockey player and people in Vancouver just adore him and idolize him... decisions decisions. So for all of you with jerseys who is on yours and why? Todd http://www.sportplanet.com/thunderpu...a/nov14/06.jpg or Trevor http://www.sportplanet.com/thunderpu...a/nov14/26.jpg |
