It is! I've heard of several.

BraveMaroon 08-15-2017 03:43 PM

Anyone know what chapter total is? Those are some stout pledge classes.

Thank you Clemsongirl! Congratulations to all the other alumnae, parents and friends of the UGA chapters. Record setting year for formal recruitment and record setting stats for the class of UGA21 in general. This new member class will likely be the driving force in these chapters for years to come. UGA just posted the freshman statistics a few days ago:

Avg GPA: 4.0
Avg SAT: 1344
Avg ACT: 30
Incoming first-year students: 5,800+ and 87% from GA

I second that. And, I hope her roommate situation gets resolved.

WeaverD, having a crazy roommate can wear you down. I totally been there and done that. Hopefully, she can get a new one and possibly find a sorority home through Alpha Phi or COB.

Thank you Sciencewoman. I feel like I'm a Hall Director again, but with my own child. SMH.

Thank you Jolene. I think if she didn't have the roommate drama, her outcome may have been very different, but she's learning to roll with the punches and still being positive. I just feel bad that this is her introduction to college life...dealing with a mean-spirited, petty, and toxic person. I've been having to calm my wife down each night after the tears from my daughter and not let her drive to Athens to show the roommate what an angry mom can really be like. If anything, my daughter is learning real life experiences...good, bad, or indifferent.

WeaverD, please encourage your daughter to explore the opportunity of the Alpha Phi colonization. It truly is an opportunity to lay the foundation of a brand new chapter. I was the general advisor of a Zeta chapter founded at a nearby university. What a privilege it was to work with those women. I can't tell you how often I told them what important work they were doing, and how much easier I had had it, joining an old established chapter! They had a closer sisterhood too, even though my chapter was established and had a house. Best wishes with whatever your daughter decides, but please come back and let us know!

Amen, sista! I've had the same experience working with new colonies in my group. What a blessing and honor!

My sorority sister's daughter went Gamma Phi. They were her top choice throughout all the rounds. :)

So true FSUZeta and Titchou. I was a member of a recolonization process. It took a lot of work, time, effort, trial and error, and frustration, but I think I gained a greater appreciation for what is involved with a new organization and had the opportunity to take on a leadership role right out of the gate. I also take a lot of pride in going back to my chapter and seeing the charter on the wall with my name on it as well as the composite with so few brothers on it but it is surrounded by 20 years worth of composites with 130+ members and remembering that I am part of an older history. It is what sparked an interest in my first professional career and why I continue to volunteer with my organization. I advise a chapter that started off as a colony 6 years ago and finally won a top chapter award at our leadership school this summer. That was a great feeling to be part of the history of this young chapter and group of men.

My daughter doesn't always follow the easy road (as a parent, I sometimes wish she did), but through struggle comes perseverance and through challenge, growth. I'm really not sure what she will do, but what an exciting time to be to be young, in college, and have an enormous amount of opportunity before you.

UGAmom2017 08-16-2017 12:55 PM

Any word on how many legacies Alpha Gam took? I know at least 1!😁😁

BraveMaroon 08-16-2017 09:10 PM

So, word is that Panhellenic upped chapter total to 278, so a handful of houses are offering bids (I guess technically COB, not snap bids). They have until Friday to finish up in time for Alpha Phi to start their colonization.

IHeartUGA 08-17-2017 10:41 PM

According to head counts in a couple of pictures, DPHiE got about 52ish and SDT got 46.

1. I thought when there was a colonization, COB was suspended?

2. Since total is still high, maybe we'll get lucky and after Alpha Phi colonizes, Alpha Xi will be able to recolonize next *fingers crossed*

Titchou 08-18-2017 08:47 PM

They sometimes allow the existing groups to COB for a few days. All depends on the campus situation.

Weaver D 08-23-2017 01:18 PM

Fingers crossed. My daughter had an interview with Alpha Phi today as part of their colonization process at UGA. They still have a few events over the next week with the final two being by invitation. She has had positive interactions with the ELC staff and she thought her interview went well. I was even able to find an alumna that knows my daughter well to complete a rec.

BTW - the roommate drama continues, but my daughter is continuing to be kind & courteous, focusing on school and staying out of her way until housing can make the necessary room changes.

clemsongirl 08-23-2017 01:26 PM

I am so hopeful that Alpha Phi works out for her! Keeping my fingers crossed about that and her roommate situation.

I can so appreciate your situation. My daughter and her roommate freshman year did NOT get along at all- 2 very strong personalities just clashed from the beginning and it made for a horrible 1st term- she was able to move 2nd semester and she was so much happier- on a positive note however, now that they have lived apart for last 2 1/2 years they are friends again and have both "grown up" so to speak. I won't say they are best buddies but they do have a friendly connection once again and I am grateful for that, and that they both have moved past all that and can be positive and encouraging to one another. Stick with it as you don't know how this will end. As for the Alpha Phi colonization, I am so very happy to hear she is pursuing this. When Alpha Phi colononized at Ole Miss- my girl went through it but unfortunately it did not work out well for her- it was a blessing in disguise though as it led her to Theta where she is very happy. I encourage her to continue and let her personality shine!! I am truly hoping and praying for the very best for her. Please do keep us all posted. We are all wishing the very best for her. :)

FSUZeta 08-23-2017 06:01 PM

WeaverD, I am so glad your daughter decided to give Alpha Phi a try. Hoping for the best for her!

Jill1228 08-25-2017 07:30 PM

Crossing my fingers for her

ShadeTree 08-26-2017 09:44 AM

Good luck to your daughter. Hope she finds a home in Alpha Phi. They are a wonderful organization!

Weaver D 08-29-2017 08:50 PM

So the roommate situation has been resolved. The other young lady moved out and one of my daughter's high school friends from the same building is moving in!

My daughter also texted me to let me know that she was invited to the Alpha Phi Pref Day event tomorrow night and she is thrilled! Bid Day is Thursday!

It's been over 20 years since interacting with Alpha Phi but they were a strong chapter when I worked at a campus in OH. Looking forward to the opportunity for my daughter.

clemsongirl 08-29-2017 09:00 PM

I'm so happy to hear this!! I know different groups do it differently-do you know if a pref invite guarantees a bid?

No idea, but excited for her!

I am so thrilled and beyond excited for her. I hope this means she's getting a bid. I have my fingers and toes crossed. How very exciting. Please keep us updated and let us know how it goes. :)

I had a young friend join at U of Alabama when they colonized. She said at the end of the pref party, they announced that everyone there had a bid.

That sounds like the most exciting/awesome pref party. What fun that would be!

And WeaverD, I'm so happy things are looking up for your daughter. Crossing my fingers Alpha Phi works out for her!

That's how we've been doing it lately, but it wasn't always that way, even just a few years ago.

The chapter I advise led the pref ceremony for my own chapter at Michigan when it recolonized a couple years ago. I couldn't go on the buses to that event due to Parents' Weekend at my daughter's college, and I was really, really disappointed when I found out that they were all there for the actual Bid Opening at the pref event and I missed it! They had announced that Bid Day would be the next day, so it was a big surprise.

So I was at a Pi Phi chapter house with my daughter, instead of celebrating the recolonization of my own chapter. It was just one of those times when you really wish you could be at two places at the same time. I really wish I would have been there, because all of the members I advise were so happy for me and so thrilled to be the ones to lead pref and partake in the recolonization rejoicing.

Whether it's tonight or tomorrow, WeaverD, I sincerely hope your daughter finds her home with Alpha Phi.

Weaver D 08-30-2017 07:23 PM

Proud to say that my daughter received a bid to Alpha Phi!!!! Tomorrow will be the bid ceremony! Thank you all for words of encouragement and support!
