I saw Eisley last night at a show in DC...you may have heard of them because MTV News did a little feature on them. Anyway, they're pretty decent. It's a little wussier than what I normally listen to, but they're definitely worth checking out.

Also if you like hardcore check out Every Time I Die. They're DA BOMB.

bafromkc 10-31-2003 10:59 AM

The Low Life. They are big in the DC, MD and VA area. They have played with OAR and are touring some colleges now. They are really good.

MoxieGrrl 10-31-2003 11:07 AM

Hmmm....don't know if I posted this one here before, but RUTH RUTH!!! To my knowledge, they only had one CD, and one video on MTV (Uninvited). They rock my world! "I Killed Meg the Prom Queen" is my fav. Around 96-97, they were on tour with Everclear.

I thought everyone listened to them?!

How about The Julianany Theroy. (SP?) They are very good for emo. Or Thursday who was great in concert!

Lil' Hannah 10-31-2003 12:24 PM

It's Juliana Theory. They're from the Pittsburgh area, I do believe. I had a class with a girl who was friends with them.

I saw Thursday and they called us mother f'ers. Mother F you, Thursday. Their new album is too preachy anyway.

Before they broke up :( the Dismemberment Plan would use our house as their place when they were in town. One of our sisters is from DC and befriended them. There were a lot of local articles about the D-Plan sleeping in a sorority house. They were nice guys.

Josh is one of my best friends...It's University of Mississippi, not Missouri.

Yes ye was a Kappa Sig...great guy too...sooo talented.

I think he is freakin awesome and he writes all his own songs!

I am an idiot, I meant to quote this post not the last one. Josh writes ALL of his own songs...no co-writers at all!! Great to see that people are embracing his music...finally!

LOL, sorry I got the schools mixed up...

I swear I saw a 60 sec commercial with his song on it and bought his CD and I haven't regretted since. I listened to it over and over again on my trip here to Korea :)

hottytoddy 12-18-2003 05:33 PM

Yeah the CD is good...the next single os going to be "Everybody wants you" He had a hard time deciding which one to make the next single. He told me last weekend that he is going to re-record it for radio...and it's going to be in some movie with Julia Stiles. He has a lot of good songs too that are unreleased. He's a talented guy.

hottytoddy 12-18-2003 05:38 PM

wait? you're in Korea??

Special Disaster Team- local band, I graduated wiht the members, it's a punk ska group, and they're pretty good... Just got back from their first tour... Still trying to get a deal with a major label, still producing records in their mother's garage.

Falcon 5-O- these guys opened for the Big Red Rally this year, they rocked hardcore... Check out their single, "Dirty Hot Girl"

hottytoddy 12-20-2003 06:15 AM

Anyone reading this should check out Teitur!! it's really mellow..kinda makes me think of James Taylor...

Rudey 12-20-2003 06:27 AM

You anti-mainstream weirdos need to listen to songs that play on the radio more often.

-Rudey

hottytoddy 12-20-2003 06:36 AM

I am not ani-mainstream at all.
I just also enjoy all music..and it isn't always mainstream...this thread is to inform others about good music that they probably haven't heard because it isn't mainstream.

The radio honks.

I'm going through my mp3 collection.

Wolfie! They're a little strange and some people don't find them accessible but I love "You're Lucky I'm Skinny" and "Yeah Yeah You" and "Hello Saturday."

I forget if Allister was mentioned yet but if so, those of you who like cheesy generic pop-punk (like me) will get a kick out of them. My favorites are "The One That Got Away" and "Pictures."

Basement Jaxx makes really dance-able music although they have been getting bigger lately so you might have heard of them (they had a song in the Bend It Like Beckham soundtrack).

More Wisconsin love: the Benjamins are fantastic. Apparently there is a Welsh band by the same name but I imagine they aren't as good. They've got kind of a classic Weezer sound. Try "Gave It Away," "Wonderful" and "Sophia on the Stereo."

The Candyskins are the only Brit pop that I ever really liked. A little bit like Blur or Oasis but catchier.

The Weakerthans: a little bit emo/indie, but good emo.

Student Rick: Old school pop-rock -- a little Weezerish.

Sloan: I'm not sure how I'd classify these guys -- maybe in the Dismemberment Plan/Imperial Teens category, although they are catchier.

Reggie and the Full Effect: Really catchy pop-rock with a little punk thrown in for good measure. My favorites are "Your Boyfriend Hates Me" and "Everything's Okay."

Pat McCurdy: As far as I know, this guy's hit that epitomizes the college lifestyle, "Sex and Beer," has not left Wisconsin and Minnesota. It should. We always listened to it last year when we were drinking the dorms.

OK Go: These guys have gotten a little bigger lately so you might have heard of them too, but they make the catchiest good pop music that I have ever heard since Fountains of Wayne. I don't know anybody who hasn't become an immediate fan after hearing "You're So Damn Hot."

Motion City Soundtrack: I saw these guys last year opening for the Starting Line and they're great. They're starting to get really big within the pop/punk/rock circuit so if you start listening to them now you might beat the bandwagon. ;)

Fall Out Boy: These guys are incredibly; they're my new favorite band. They come from the same pop-punk-with-a-touch-of-emo school that Starting Line and MCS do.

Mason Jennings: He's like all the boy singer-songwriter-guitarists that have cropped up lately but he's smarter. He's written some of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, starting with "California" and "California #2" and "Darkness Between the Fireflies."

Okay Basement Jaxx were pretty big dance wise about 2 years ago up here with the song "Were's Your Head At?".... cool album cover too (it's the one with the albino ape).

Sloan is very common up here, and has been for about five years, played on radio, bars, tv. To classify them I'd compare them to Weezer (one of the more common comparisons), but they describe themselves as "geek rock" or "nerd rock".

However I will have to check-out some of the bands you mentioned.... they may be good but haven't broke out of their region yet.

I wouldn't compare Sloan to Weezer simply because I think they are "darker," which puts them more into the Imperial Teens category for me -- but I suppose they are more like Weezer in the fact that they are less "jammy" than IT and their songs tend to be faster and lyrics tend to be catchier.

It's funny how music can be so different in different countries -- some of the stuff that is huge in Britain and Australia and even Canada never even makes it onto the radio here.

I think Basement Jaxx is starting to blow up even here though; my ex-boyfriend showed me the "Romeo" video last winter and every since then I've heard "Do Your Thing" everywhere -- I think that was the song that was on the Bend It Like Beckham soundtrack, and it's also on the SSX3 soundtrack which I played religiously this fall while avoiding studying for midterms.

Also for dance music I LOVE Madison Avenue's "Don't Call Me Baby" but I heard the rest of their music is not so good so I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned The Darkness. I saw them on the MTV Europe Awrads. They have a cool sound, kinda like Queen.

Exit Broadway. Cute boy with a girlfriend who needs to break up with her for me is in it.

Basement Jaxx have been relatively popular here for at least 5 years. They even had a song off their first album in a Coca-Cola commercial.

The Mars Volta is an awesome band. Two of the guys from At The Drive-In are in it. Amazing performers...unfortunately I've only seen videos of their shows.

FiReKraCkEr 12-22-2003 02:26 AM

Blindspot, an AWESOME ska band...

A great band from Seattle.

You should check them out. They are like a mix of Staind and Train.

HAHAHAH LOL!!!

They are by far my fav band. I've watched the new DVD wayyy too many times to admit. Wish I could quit school & follow them around going to shows...like SpreadHead or something...guess that makes me a PearlHead?

FiReKraCkEr 01-07-2004 07:48 AM

I like FeFe Dobson. She's from Canada and sings "Take Me Away". She's already huge here.

ISUKappa 03-03-2004 08:32 PM

A few from when I was in school. They all sound a lot alike--rock/folk/blues mix. Live shows are awesome. I don't know if they're all still playing together or not.

The Nadas www.thenadas.com They've been together 10 years now. All 4 of the founding members were members of a GLO at Iowa State--3 Pi Kapps and one Phi Delt. The Bass player has since left the band and been replaced. I will love this band forevah.

Dazy Head Mazy Just a lot of fun. I think they know almost every member of Tri Delta from when I was in school by name, so many came to their shows.

Domestic Problems Great band from Michigan.

The Why Store Mr. ISUKappa's favorite band from college. The lead singer sings/looks/acts like he's constantly stoned.

Well they're FROM up there, so that's why...they're not big here at all yet. My friend saw them at Yale in the spring and then we saw them again in Minneapolis.

Nikki_DZ 07-27-2004 12:25 AM

Crazy Ivan.

They're a local band in the Cincinnati area (Xavier students and grads), and their CD "We Scholars" is amazing.
