I dont think shes all that...but the stats say otherwise...

Only one of those songs, "Foolish" really belonged to her. The other two songs, she sung a Hook for Ja Rule and Fat Joe. I'm sorry, but singing hooks should not qualify one to win an Aretha Franklin award. As far as Hot 97 is concerned, I don't even waste my time listening to that station anymore.

Don Cornelius Speaks Out!

Don Cornelius has commented that the Aretha Franklin award doesn't have to go to one who sounds, or looks like Aretha Franklin. He goes on to say that "Ashanti cd has sold this and has sold that. I think Irv Gotti called Don and he thought that it was one of John Gotti's boys:D :D :D :D .

AKA2D '91 08-13-2002 09:55 PM

Looks? What do they have to do with anything?

Okay...
The thing with the AF award is that someone who gets the award SHOULD live up to her name/career. Has Ashanti taken up a "cause"? UHHH, NO (I guess the murrrrder handsign???)! Has she had to endure any hardships? UHHH NO! Didn't it take Aretha longer than 8 months to make it or to pay her "dues"? Didn't Aretha write ENTIRE songs, not only HOOKS? YES. Isn't she a musician? YES!

Let's look at the Lena Horne Award: Who is getting it? Isn't it Angela Bassett? Does she look like Lena? HELL you know what NAW! Has Angela had a terrific, LONG acting career, like Lena? Yeah! Has Angela paved the way for AA females, like Lena? Yes!

Whatever Don...what the freak ever! You are just trying to keep ST above board. You know you's scurrrred of MTV and 'nem. You's just trying to compete.

You all are laughing at my post, but I am as serious as a terminal disease.

I saw Re-Re on BET tonight last night. She and Ed, rather, she was cooking this food. Anyway, they go to another room, where Re-Re is playing the piano (these chords and thangs). Ed is doing her interview asking her various questions and stuh. I was sitting there thinking after Re-Re gave her responses, that ASHANTI does not deserve this...SALES OR NO SALES. Ashanti's songs aren't even the same caliber of songs as Arethas. Where is the SOUL, the HEART, the PAIN, the TURMOIL? When you hear Aretha's songs, that's what you get. If you do not believe me, pick-up the work that gave her the title "Queen of Soul".

If anything ST needs to get a Fly-by-night award to these remaking, hook singing heffas (Ashanti, Lil Mo, etc. etc.).

No, I know you are, and you are dead on it, but you're still hilarious! :D

But, I thought the Source Awards would have taken care of the one-hit-wonders and scantily-clad women. Or BET Awards at least...

1913CrimsonQT 08-15-2002 09:35 AM

Soul Train has issued yet another response!

And another! Why are the three paragraphs all one sentence long? Can we say run-on sentences?

Bamboozled 08-15-2002 09:57 AM

After reading these two alleged responses, I am thouroughly convinced that they cannot be represenative of Soul Train. I just REFUSE to believe it. Please Lord, say it ain't so.

*Sidebar* When spelling ain't, why is there an apostrophe between the "n" and the "t"? Exactly what letter are we omitting? I'm assuming it's an "o", but then what is the "ai" about? Not that "ain't" is grammatically correct anyway, but now I'm going to have to check out the etymology of the word. *End Sidebar*

Ok, but if we were to look at those things, Alicia or Mary should have won the award last year... but they didn't. And, I must say, this "thing" with Ashanti is of NO comparison to the Oscars and the success Denzel and Halle has had.
Sorry, I disagree...It goes back to the theory that people are OWED something..and thats not what award shows are about....unfortunately...I saw Training Day and that was NOT Denzels best work, but he was owed the Oscar....and it received the backlash it did....many felt Halle won it because they felt blacks were owed the Oscar...

You dont give Gold medals in the Olympics to the man who has run the fastest all year, whos had the longest career, who carries himself like a true athlete, who gives most to charity...its for the person who runs the fastest. If they run ONE race their entire life, and its the fastest at the Olympics, they win....

Ashanti ran the fastest...

True, but the name of the award is Aretha Franklin Entertainer of the Year award, which means, Ashanti should have had her shoe laces tied tight and perspiration on her brow from running, All Year. Maybe the award should be Soul Train New Entertainer on the Scene.

Although I signed the petition, the true protest doesn't come from online signatures, it comes from money...or lack there of. If you truly are in protest of this girl getting the award....don't watch the show when it airs. When they can't sell airtime because their Nielsens are in the toliet then they may reevaluate the bases next years award.

CrucialCrimson 08-19-2002 04:32 PM

Why are people acting like this is some sort of public award where the average person's opinion matters or dictates who gets nominated or who wins the award - if they nominated her, then she fits their criteria and so be it, regardless of who it is named after - let that person pitch a fit and have their name removed from the award - but to go on and on about the merit or lack thereof for someone that had a phenomenal year - COMMERCIALLY - and Soul Train is a commercial endeavor - is ridiculous!!

Afrochic 08-19-2002 11:08 PM

Because the average person's money and the average person's support got her and Soul Train to the point they are today.

I agree with you. The peition is good.. but if you think about it this is publicity for soul train. Beacuse now here is a controversy and people are going to tune in to see, if she gets it, shows up, and audience reaction..

Playing Devil's Advocate...

I was just thinking...

If this petition wasn't about a Soul Train award... if it was something else geared toward African-Americans - a political, educational, or civil rights issue - how many signatures would there be on the petition?

How many folks who "voted" on the petition actually vote in real life? The article on MSNBC said that this is the biggest on-line petition response ever. When's the last time we (as African-Americans) received press coverage for being 20,000+ strong behind a real issue?

I think that's a pretty sad commentary...

ososuave 08-22-2002 02:27 PM

What the.....

"Soul Train officials posted an unsigned reaction on the show’s Web site that expressed outrage “over the fact that a people, whose ancestry suffered 400 years of slavery, can be herded so easily into a virtually bottomless mud hole and be taught to sling such mud therein.”

Explain to me what a music petition has to do with 400 years of slavery, I know Soul Train might be pissed off but am I the only one who thinks this reaction is a little too far... I mean they used the phrase "a people". They're calling us as a race stupid (herded so easily), but wait they're black too...this it too much.

Man, at this point if I was Ashanti, I would release the following comment: "Thank you, Soul Train for attempting to bestow upon me this prestigious award...yada yada yada...but I gracefully choose not to accept it...yada yada yada...b/c I feel I do not deserve it....blah blah blah....etc" and state that she feels that such-and-such female singers, who (whom?--I always get these two confused; at least my grammar's better than the writers' employed by Soul Train) she considers her role models and inspiration, are deserving and well-earned candidates for this award...

That would be the mature (and she's the same age as me--21 so if I can think of this so can she) and honorable thing to do...

However, I don't think she has the guts to actually do it...

do you mind if I ask who you think should receive the award? It seems as though everyone's complaining specifically about Ashanti winning this award, but no one seems to think any specific woman deserved it and was robbed...who do we think should've received the 2002 (note, 2002, not last year, or the year before) Lady of Soul Award?

Take a look at the Billboard top 100. Ashanti's album(at #17 even though it was #1) is the highest R/B female album on there. The 2nd highest is Mary J. Blige at #77 and that's been out for over a year! It's unfortunate that some really talented artists can't even get decent airplay, but as long as people shell out $$ for Ashanti can we really blame Soul Train for giving the public what they ask for? Can we blame Ashanti for accepting an award when she WAS on point this year?

Ashanti was on some tabloid show today being interviewed about the petition. She said she was hurt upon finding out about it, but that she is using it as motivation to prove to everyone that she does deserve the award. It sounded like she plans to give the performance of a lifetime, prove the haters wrong, etc.

Ashanti Accepts Lady of Soul Award
Sun Aug 25, 7:22 AM ET

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - R&B singer Ashanti accepted entertainer of the year honors at Saturday's Lady of Soul Awards despite complaints from some music fans that she didn't deserve the title.

"It's definitely an honor to just be recognized for such a prestigious award and I'm just so happy to be here with all my people who have been supporting me," she said during the ceremony hosted by the "Soul Train" music show at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

More than 28,000 signatures had been gathered on an Internet petition decrying the decision to give entertainer of the year to Ashanti. A person identified as Rommel Zamora posted the document at PetitionOnline.com.

Ashanti didn't directly mention the Internet controversy during her brief speech. Patti LaBelle, who presented the award to Ashanti, said the 21-year-old newcomer was "extremely deserving of this wonderful recognition."

"I got on the plane this morning to come here from Philadelphia because it's worth it," LaBelle said. "We have to support our babies. ... Her overall success of the past year exceeds those of all other female solo artists or groups."

Ashanti, who led all other performers with five nominations, also captured one award: best new solo artist.

She has sold more than 2.3 million copies of her self-titled debut album, released earlier this year. Among her hits are the singles "Foolish" and "Happy," and she has become a sensation with numerous TV appearances and magazine pictorials.

Ashanti's critics complain that she's not talented enough to deserve the entertainer of the year honor, especially since it is named after the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Previous winners include Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, TLC and Jill Scott.

"It is an insult to other entertainers who are more deserving of this award and Aretha Franklin. Ashanti simply lacks singing ability and stage presence," the petition states.

The late singer Aaliyah's single "Rock the Boat" won two awards: best R&B solo single and song of the year. In the group category, Destiny's Child won best R&B/soul album of the year for "Survivor" and best R&B single for "Emotion."

The other winners were:

_R&B/soul album of the year, solo artist: "Songs in A Minor," by Alicia Keys.

_R&B/soul or rap music video: "One Minute Man," by Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott.

_R&B/soul or rap new artist, for group, band or duo: "Night & Day," by Isyss featuring Jadakiss.

_Gospel album: "Believe," by Yolanda Adams.

_Lena Horne Award for outstanding career achievement: Angela Bassett.

Co-hosts for the eighth annual awards program were Arsenio Hall, Jill Scott and Shemar Moore. Winners were determined by an unspecified group of radio programmers, recording artists and music retail employees.

Ok I caught the Soul train Awards thirty minutes into the show...so there may have been some good things that I missed....... here is my take on it.

The show was relatively........wellll.....BORING.

Who Made the Show

Jill Scott- Jill Scott should have performed more than one song. She was one of the FEW entertainers to take the stage that I actually enjoyed and who actually could sing. Her smile is worth a million alone.

Angela Basset- She is a Diva what can i say.

Patti labelle- She should have sang and added more entertainment value to the show

Cece Winans- Class act

Lailah Ali- Was it just me or was she looking at the other presenters like she wanted to give them a uppercut to the chin? But she smiled it off rather well.

The last girl group (of the GOZILLION) The one where they were standing in the picture window at the beginning of thier act...The lead singer could sing. I thought that were half good.

The HOT MESS REPORT

Is it just me or did anyone else notice how OLD a lot of the Albums being recognized were. Come on people!.....example...DESTINY"S CHILD SURVIVOR?????? WTF Not to mention the second award they were up for there was only 1 other nominee.....(Go Figure) There are far more artist out there who deserve recognition for thier efforts.

Arsenio needed to slap whoever told him that hairstyle looked good on him. His 4head looked longer than ever. HOT FOREHEAD MESS

Whats that other fool name who hosted.....what is his purpose? HOT WORTHLESS MESS

Who Da Hell are all these Girl groups that are popping up?????HOT TALENTLESS MESS

I was saving the best for last.......
ASHANTI PROVED...That she is a HOT MESS. She looked a Hot MEss she sounded a HOT MESS OVERALL....HOT MESS. If they throw up one more Murder. Inc. Hand sign I will just puke. OVERALL HOT MESS

other than that....:D

CrimsonTide4 08-25-2002 02:55 PM

So Soror,
Let me see if I read this correctly. . . you thought this show was boring and full of several types of HOT MESS!! :p

I did not watch because of several reasons: tired of award shows especially ones that honor CDs from 2000, miscellaneous groups who have not been out longer than my last hair do, Shemar Moore (host whose name you 4got), etc.

I am however pissed that I missed JILL -- that is my homie.

Oh well, it's Muuuuuuuurder :D

DuttyRed 08-25-2002 11:15 PM

Hey Sorors,

I caught the show and outside of the countless, nameless girl groups (Extacsy, Exhale, Isis, WtF!!!), I was shocked by Arsenio's "Sideshow Bob" hairdo. It is very funny to see a forty five year old man try to hold on to his youth. Oh, and can he please stop with the "fa-shizzles" and the "hizzouses". Jill definitely held it down with her performance, but that was about the only good performance of the night. My other favorite "performance" was that of one Lawrence Fishburn. I can't really describe it, but lets just say he takes himself waaaaaaayyyyy to seriously.
