Therein lies the question ... how do you define biggest?
Most undergrad chapters? Most total chapters (including grad or alum)? Most people initiated? Most living people initiated? Most currently active collegians? Most chapters installed (even if not active)? You're going to come up with different answers ... From what I've seen on this thread, Beta Sigma Phi has the most chapters of any women's fraternal org. Most undergrad chapters, an NPHC group will win. You could narrow it down, say, "only collegiate fraternal orgs," or "only NPC orgs." Now clearly Chi O is the biggest NPC org, but I think it's a stretch to call them the biggest women's fraternal org, looking at the numbers of Beta and the NPHC groups. |

That is funny to hear some of these ideas that people get about which sorority they watn beccause of stupid little thigns like that. Colors and numbers are not a good basis for selection but oh well - whatever those girls seem to want as long as they are happy....kinda odd but very funny.:p |
CHI OMEGA is the largest women's organization.. second only to Girl Scouts.. This being fact, CHI OMEGA is the biggest national sorority.
|
Sigma Nu is none of the above:D
I know we are in the top 7 in every category that they use to compare NIC groups. Top 3 in most from what was said at our 60th Grand Chapter. We want to be #1:D |
Can't this thread just die? People are getting so competitive! We have all heard these facts repeated over and over... no need to anymore!

While I am proud of being a Delta Zeta, I am more proud of the fact that I am GREEK. Numbers are important, but to be honest, I try and not get caught up in them. We do have the biggest number of intiated women and the reason I think this is so cool is because its makes me think, wow, all these beautiful women share in the same ceremony as I and share in the same experiences as I do. I do not think it is cool so I can tell all my friends and family, "hey, we're the 2nd largest nationally and have the most intiated members". Granted, its neat, but I don't use it as bragging rights.
Every sorority and fraternity is different for a reason. Each has its own individual history and traditions. I think we are all unique and I am proud to call each and everyone of you my greek brothers and sisters...NPC, NPHC, local etc., etc. Greek love and mine, Blaire |
AOII...
Alpha Omicron Pi has 178 collegiate chapters.

AOPi may have installed 178 college chapters - but I believe only about 110 of them are still around and active today. |
my apology...
...alnd I certainly want to get it right
AOII has 101 active chapters |
I think that Chi Omega is the largest. And i know that Kappa Delta is among the top 5 but i'm not exactly sure which number.
|
reviving controversy. Been boring on this site lately.
|
Food for thought...
Because NPC operates on the quota total system, there is much less dispartity between # of active chapters, # of members, and # of alumnae. Chi Omega takes all three.
And, let's re-examine this whole largest women's organization in the world. It's not the Girl Scouts. It's the National Panhellenic Conference. |
ASA is the largest national sorority*!
*out of all the sororities founded in 1901! hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee |
Come on people, fight. I'm bored. Where is the statician when u need 'em.

HRM.
Well the Girl Scouts are just part of WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts). There are only like 2 countries where they're called Girl Scouts, the US and some obscure place. I'd be willing to bet that WAGGGS membership is higher than NPC membership. Unless you're just limiting it to the US.... LOL! Yeah for GC bickering! If anyone cares, I am a proud and devoted member of both NPC and WAGGGS! |

I think that it means how many initiates in total over the history of a sorority. My sorority and SDT were founded in 1917. NPC sororities founded in the 19th Century will probably have more initiates since some are 50+ years older.

Numbers can be so hard to pin down, can't they? Chi O's website says: "Today, Chi Omega is the largest women's fraternal organization in the world with 240,000 initiates." When they say "initiates," I'm not sure if they mean living initiates or total-since-founding initiates. Anyway... The website of P.E.O. Sisterhood, a fraternal organization for adult women says that P.E.O "has grown from that tiny membership of seven to more than a quarter of a million members in chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada." P.E.O.'s "more than a quarter of a million [i.e., 250,000] members" would seem to be more than Chi O's 240,000. As for the oft-repeated claim that Chi Omega is the largest women's organization (sometimes the claim is largest "non-profit" women's organization) except for the Girl Scouts, again numbers can be tricky. According to the website of the Woman’s Missionary Union, a women's organization connected to the Southern Baptist Convention, that group has "a membership of approximately 1 million." The website of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs reports that that group "currently has members in 6,500 clubs around the United States, and more than one million members worldwide." Granted, the US membership is not clear, but just an average membership of 40 would take the US membership over 260,000, and I'm guessing (I know I shouldn't do that) that most of the GFWC's members are in the US. Please don't get me wrong -- I'm not slamming Chi Omega. Chi Omega is an outstanding organization, and its sisters have much to be proud of -- so much, in fact, that it seems to me that they don't need to keep repeating a questionable claim. |
I believe we have a winner....

Here are some nice stats!
NPC consists of 3.5 millions of the women in sororities. To me I don't care if my sorority has 300 chapters. It might give good bragging rights, but 1 or 300, I am proud of my sorority. This elitest attitude coming out of some posts are slightly disappointing. We are all one big greek family, and instead of finding out which crazy uncle has the most kids, we should be happy that all of us make up a huge community. DG isn't one of the sororities with the smallest number of chapters, and it also isn't one of those with the most - but it is my home and it is my family. So hooray for whoever has the most after the cookie peddling 5 years old, and hooray for whoever has the least number of chapters! We all found a home and a family - and I think that is the best bragging right. <3 (God, I am so hokie sometimes!) |
Hokie but oh so right.
I've gotten to be good friends with an ASA, who had her DZ friend come in from out of town. The three of us and an unaffiliated friend went out and got to talking about sororities -- and the unaffiliated one was going on about how, well, ALL the sororities want her, but she's really not INTO sororities, etc.... so I launched into a little lecture about how sorority life is all about the SISTERHOOD and golly, let the system have a chance to work (re: rush), and it came to me..... wow am I a greekchat girl. |
All I know is that Alpha Phi's are the third largest & fourth oldest, but I also wanted to know who took first and second (and/or third oldest). It's always fun to know!
