Re: A possible benefit of the show...

I was watching last night, as I couldnt sleep, and 4 episodes were on, so I got to catch up. A coupel of observations. 1) Candace almost got her ass busted ... hard, being hammered when you are sober sister. should be grounds for serious disciplinary action had she been discovered. 2) Cant stand Jordan. Does she REALLY go through life blaming all bad things that happen to her on, "its because I am so hot that they hate me." The deal is...shes not hot at all. I think she looks like a salamander. If you got them wierd ass eyebrows, and bedroom eyes, dont put your hair up in a pony tail. it makes your eyes that much distorted...and it looks like your hair is pulled too tight. ANd that shit about, "i am just under so much stress and have so much on my plate." I wanted to slap the hooker. Seriously. Youre a pledge. Its not hard. You shut up, and do as your told, and stay outa trouble for 10 weeks. Not rocket science. You want hard? Try school, work, relationships, and being pledgemaster. SHe is the one who had to play kindergarten teacher all quarter taking care of you tools. Shes always the one who has to hear about yall acting the fool. She has to answer to the sisters about ya'll. Which do you think is easier, being new in the org. OR RUNNING IT?? I cant beileve the pledges are so dumb and paraniod that they think Jessica is there to spy. Hey Oliver Stone, Jess moved in late cause no one wanter to live there at first. MEMO: Were in college. We dont spy. If thy didnt want you from the beginning, you wouldnt be there, and secondly, they can get rid of you at will, for no reason, so they dont need a spy. You are acting the fool very publicly. On a non-sarcastic note: I do want to congratulate the ladies of Sigma for carrying themselves like ladies so far. They have a good grasp of PR and greek image. I bet I heard, "You are representing sigma, sororities and greeks everywhere, so remember that." about 5 times last night. Good stuff. Enough of my rant. I feel better now. |
Here's my thing, on tonights episode one of the girls says at the pledge meeting to everyone, "This house sucks". I am kinf of interested in seeing what MTV will turn this into and what happens.

Amen Lifesaver!
Unfortunately I only have seen three episodes and that was while I house sit, but I don't have cable at home. I'd hate to be Jess - all the pledges are rude to her! She has more strength than me though by now I probably would have given up! |
WARNING: This post jumps all over the place.
 I thought the comments from Candace and Jordan about not being Mitzvah-e was just inappropriate slang for not being "Jewish" enough for the sorority. :o I mean Candace is the genius that somehow got through four years of high school and up to her third year of college without taking a single class that addressed the differences between Judaism and Christianity. :( Is humanities not required at UCD?
* Quote:
Don't tell me you could have watched Legally Blonde and make those comments!?! How much time a girl spends on her hair can say a lot. Yes, super curly hair takes a ton of maintence. But Jordan and Candace are overboard. And the last I checked it does not require you to wear the entire MAC collection at once! * How does anyone honestly believe that Candace has her own personality? Everything I've seen, as I sit here watching the first ep, shows me that Candace is turning more and more into a Jordan clone. * I think Jordan and Candace are rubbing off onto Mara but I think she's overall not horrible. So Mara and Jessica have both shown getting drunk off their ass once. No biggie and they weren't out of control. I still like them. * DeeDee....uh I guess she's got to be studying all the time. Or maybe she's flashing her thong some more while riding her crotchrocket. Well, at least she wears her helmet. * Amanda....hmm, her name should now be: Amanda, the straight haired brunette that was supposedly Jordan's bestest friend but was easily replaced by Candace! Actually, even with that name, I'd still be racking my brain trying to figure out who the !@#$ she is. ;) * Zuma, and any SAEPi's that may be lurking- Please Please Please let AEPhi Alum be right about this trainwreck actually helping someone. Like, if ya'll don't have a standards board, make one! And please let them get a backbone. Like Becca. As much as I think she's adorable. (I'm watching the first "talk" to Jordan.) All that happened is Becca saying "there's concerns. yada yada." Then Jordan wants names to go to. And asks them to let her know if it doesn't get taken care of. Like Jordan took away from the conversation that they just wanted to let her know people were talking about her. When the real point was the behavior that was being talked about. Becca....You're going to be President next year. Congrats! But please learn from the show. :) ===== Completely random rant: Just watched a Lee Dungaree commercial about a guy daydreaming about a dead EMU that he's going to mount in his game room. But at the end there's no EMU but a sorority w/ letters SMU. U IS NOT A GREEK LETTER DAMMIT!!! |
Ugh!
Candace pisses me off to no end. No matter what anyone does, she suspects a plot to catch her doing something bad. Guilty conscience much?
"They baked these cupcakes for the pledges. I personally think it's a plot to try to catch us breaking the rules." And why is there NO pledge/sister interaction? ALSO... if you don't like being around girls or large groups of girls - WHY JOIN A SORORITY?!?! I know that sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming being surronded by people 24/7, and I think it sucks the way they invaded the house, but deal with it. These are your pledge sisters, you know, if you make it to initiation they will be your SISTERS - that's not a title I take lightly. At least try to make an effort to get to know them and drop the attitude! |
All six girls are listed on the SigmaAEPi website as being inducted/initiated. Twelve "Theta Thangs" all together.
|
Grr...
The whole thing with them not participating in the games and stuff really ticked me off. The whole crack about making it feel like they were 5 years old again really got to me. Like the one girl said on the first episode (I think it was Becca) that if the pledges didn't want them to be there, they wouldn't have any problem shipping them out. Maybe they should bring up that option to the girls in the house that arn't following the rules.
Oh, and them trying to get Jessica to follow them in breaking the rules... talk about acting like you're 5 again... Many other things made me mad, but I'm too worn out from the show to gripe about the rest of them... |
Does it bother anyone else that there is a framed and matted caricature of the FIVE pledges hanging over the couch?
|
actually, it says "check back in a few weeks and find out who became a sister" I would take that to mean that not everyone does.
Is there any more doubt that some of these chicks are only there for the cameras? Hello, how much of a brain does it take to know that if you live in a sorority house/pledge house that you won't have a lot of privacy and be around other girls all the time? Why would you subject yourself to that if you hate it so much? |
Okay...WTH is up with Jessica getting slapped in the next show? That is seriously messed up!
Actually, today's episode seemed like they are getting more used to the cameras being there. I just got that vibe. Like they still care how they look and everything, but they have let their guard down a little. And I have actually caught people skipping out on retreat before, so let's not pretend that is something that never happens. I feel for the other girls. It seems like the non-house girls really try to act normal and sisterly, but I think it was a big mistake for them to agree to air their laundry on national TV...now they know! |

I think planning the In-House without even asking/discussing it with the girls in the house first was a bad move. It's understandable to need a break and want to get out of the house, but the fact that they had to go to a bar further convinces me that they are alcoholics! And while I do agree that asking Jessica to break the rules with them was very childish, at least they finally addressed the issue with her instead of whispering behind her back, "omigod, maybe she's a spy!"
Next episode should be interesting...I too want to know what the heck the slap was about. Side note: Wow! We actually saw the SAEPi sisters involved in an episode...it wasn't entirely about Jordan and Candace! |
alright, i totally fell asleep before last night's episode came on, so someone PLEASE give me a recap!!! I read mtv's recap, but it looks like it was written by a 10 year old, and i know yall have the more important parts!

Amanda, Jordan, and Candace decide to sneak out of the house before everyone came over and went to a bar for some drinks. They stopped at Starbuck on the way home to cover the alcohol and are caught by Leslie. We saw snippits of SAEPi meetings discussing how the In-House went, how the pledge-house girls felt, and the fact that some of them weren't participating which defeated the purpose. Candace got a little closer to some of girls while doing make-overs. Later, she got in an arguement with Jordan over a silly comment Jordan made that Candace took offense to. They later have a heart-to-heart about why Jordan is the way she is and her obsession with her appearance. Jordan and Candace talk to Jessica about her feelings about breaking house rules. She says she doesn't want to break them but that she won't tell on them if they do. She says she'll keep it confidential even though she's in the ackward position of being close to pledges not in the house as well as sisters. Candace replies that they would feel better about breaking the rules if Jessica broke them with the other girls. Jordan suggests they all pick a night, have a house drinking night, and chat. Scenes for next week: Jessica gets slapped by Sylvia at the bar. |
who the heck is sylvia?
|
hmmm...
I don't know what it is...maybe it's the east coast sorority girl in me...maybe I went to a campus where everyone liked to party and have a good time! I relate more to Candace and Jordan than any of the actual sisters. They enjoy going out and having fun! The sisters go to the bar, sit and watch Candace and Jordan enjoy themselves! Then they go home and bitch about them being "un-Sigma!". Someone needs to define what "Sigma" is, because if it's sitting around and bitching about other girls having fun, I wouldn't want to join! And I think Jordan has a point about the sisters not getting to know them and such. You never see the sisters anywhere but at the bar watching over the pledges. They don't come to events, they don't stop by the house. If all they see is them out at the bar doing their thing, how is that getting to know them and helping unite them?
Kudos to James, because I agree that Jessica is no model pledge! She's a little butt kisser who is soooo annoying! I would be willing to bet she would rat out the other girls for drinking if she sees them doing it. As for Becca, she's the only sister I really sort of like, but she needs to just chill out before she has a breakdown. And the sisters just need to stop bitching to her about the pledges. |

Ok, I'm done... |
I have to agree that taking time to go to a bar doesn't seem like an issue to me(I didn't see the show). From the 2 shows I have seen I do think they are making them look more unlady like then they are, but then again, it's MTV. Remember these women are 18-22 and a majority of their social life is about going out and drinking I don't think that is atypical.
I'm 24 and my girlfriends and I meet on Tuesday nights for wine nights and I don't think that blowing off steam and having a few drinks are a problem. They are trying to make them look like certian types so we can all remember them like, "You remember the pretty drunk one or the chubby goodie goodie...." I mean it's TV and although the show isn't the best idea, I don't think they are showing anything that doesn't happen....that doesn't mean I would suggest such an idea of MTV following anyone, but it hasn't been that bad...not good but no Sexy Sorority Sweethearts either. |
i don't think they are alchoholics...they are in college, give them a break and i am sure that mtv has decided to focus on their drinking habits. not to say that before candace turned 21 they showed her drinking... but i agree that they should not do it in the house, and it's not "their" house...its SigmaAETT's house, and they chose to live there. So they need to abide by the rules of SigmaAETT.
as for jessica, i totally agree that she is no goody goody and that mtv is totally pretending she is. i mean, the girl was shaking her ass on the bar! thats "un-sigma" like too!!!! |
I tend to use the word "alcoholic" very loosely. I did not mean that they are addicts but, in the context of the MTV show, practically all we see them doing is drinking. I'm sure MTV is playing it up, but if anytime something is good, bad, boring, stressful, etc they say "let's go drink!" then IMO they drink too much.

The average college weeks consists of at least two party nights during the week. At my campus its Tuesday and Thursday, with Thursday being the big one.
Friday and Saturday are party nights also, but bigger off campus. So if they go out twice a week its easy to have a lot of party footage. |
I think that Jessica is a suck up. I can not stand that girl. If anyone is being fake, I think it is her. That is just my opinion.
I really don't think that the "pledge house girls" fit in this sorority. (well, the original five anyway) I don't think they are being fake, I do however think that they know that they don't fit and don't really care. That isn't to say that I hate them at all. I think they are normal partying girls. I just don't think that Sigma is the house for them. If the sisters thought that they were being exclusive this quarter, just wait until those five have a hand in rush. Some of them seem to live for being exclusive. |
Wow, Davis has the most complicated Greek system I've ever seen ...
So they have NPC sororities: AChiO, KKG, A Phi, Chi O, Pi Phi, Tri-Delt, DG and Theta. And Alpha Kappa Delta Phi, the Asian interest sorority, is a member of the Panhellenic Council. Then there are three NPHC sororities: AKA, DST, and SGRho. I'm assuming there is a PanHellenic Council, too. Not unusual so far ... But wait, there's more! There are two multi-cultural sororities (Phi Gamma Theta and Alpha Sigma Rho). There is Sigma Alpha, an ag sorority. There is SAEPi, the subject of MTV. And then there are six other sororities that don't have websites or names I recognize (ADOmega, LDG, Lambda Theta Nu, Omega Xi Phi, Chi Delta Theta, and Sigma Omicron Pi). Are these other sororities not part of the local NPC or NPHC by choice, or do they have their own council? I can't imagine being a rushee with all these bewildering choices. I'm used to, you either do formal rush/COB or you choose an NPHC group to rush. If you wanted to check out all your options here, you would have to attend so many meetings and rushes! Theoretically I support a diversity of options for rushees, but this seems crazy! Maybe it makes more sense if you're there. I agree with my sister XiLovin - it's not so much that these SAEPi girls are bad, but you wonder, wouldn't another chapter have been a better fit for them? Which leads me to uncharitable thoughts as to why they picked Sigma - the MTV angle - but I'd like to think they had better motivations. |
Fuzziealum, I couldn't agree more. Also, chantilly lace, you are right on the money in my opinion.
|
apparently all the AZD's are in agreement today, bc i totally concur. As I have said from the begining, these girls (candace and Jordan and even Jessica a little bit) don't fit in what mtv has portrayed sigmaAETT to be like. And I also am for diversity and letting PNM's have lots of choices, however i think maybe at davis there are too many choices.

Let's all say it: EDITING!!!
This show is being edited creatively as is every other "reality" show on MTV....I'd bet my fuzzy bunny on it. ;)
1. The retreat being "sprung" on the house pledges. We are given no timeline between the meeting where the non-house pledge said "this house sucks!" and the retreat. For all we know, there was a 2-3 week notice to the house pledges that this would be happening. I know even in a small group, a retreat takes a lot of planning. They didn't announce it one day and have it the next. Come on, that's just not realistic. 2. The Sigmas being "un-fun." I think it's more that they probably went to the bars or restaurants where MTV was not allowed to film (and they knew it). They know that even if you have one beer, MTV will use it to promote the "sorority = alcohol" image. I have no problem with Jordan and Candace going to the bar...I have a HUGE problem if they left a retreat to do it. If you can't give a weekend of your life for a sisterhood retreat, you shouldn't even be pledging. It just confirms that J & C are only there for the cameras. |
UCDavis is like many other colleges in this country as far as the amount of diverse sororities that are on the campuses. What you all have to realize is that a couple of the sororities that were method were asian-interest and some of the others are latina. So you wouldn't go to ALL of their informations. If you are interested in joining an asian sorority, you only have to go to two informations. If you are interested in joining a multicultural sorority, you only go to two informations also. Don't knock the college for having a wide range of choices so that everyone can find their place.
Zeta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. "Keeping the Dream Alive" |
No one was "knocking" the college for its diversity. Fuzziealum was simply pointing out that the system seems confusing and might be overwhelming.
|
I have to stick up for Jessica. For some reason I dont see her as being a butt kisser and I dont think anyone ever said that she was the "model" pledge. IMO, she is being real and honest. Jordan and Candace are being real and honest also, but you definately see a small show being put on for the camara's also.
Ok so when Canadace and Jordan asked if the other 5 girls in the house were welcomed to come to the party (non-sigma function) that the girls were having she smiled and didnt respond. It was a "what do you think?" type question. They had made NO attempts to even get to know the other pledges outside of the house and even admitted they kind of secluded themselves off. No offense, but of course your probably not invited, they dont know you really and you dont seem to want to know them. As far as the meeting they had about the house and Jessica didnt have to attend. She gave them the message Becca told her to give them. They asked her if the whole house had to go and she said no, she wasnt included. When they even asked her if she would tell on them she was like, I dont care what you do, you're grown. Even though I feel loyal to the sisters I wouldnt tell. She has never said she didnt drink or party or dance. She's even admitted she's a partier. To me she's been just plain honest and real so far. As far as the sisters only seeming to spy. Its aq college town and we all know that everyone goes to the same places in college. Even on my campus of 40,000 I bumped into sisters everyplace I went. Plain and simple if you get caught, you get caught. |
I don't understand what the problem with Jessica is...what exactly has she done??? So far we have seen that she is quiet among girls who have talked crap about her from the nite she moved in, and also abandoned her when she needed them to pick her up. I don't recall her ever telling her housemates NOT to party or to "tone things down," nor do I recall her saying, "oh, I don't party or drink, it's bad." I DO recall her saying that hey, she likes to go out too, she just doesn't feel like doing it in the house, but that's her decision and she would not get invovled in the decisions of others, nor would she try to get them in trouble as they so retardedly assumed for so long. So...what exactly has this girl DONE. I mean, come on, if there was really some shady drama going on, MTV would have been sure to catch it, and as it is they have had a tough enough time making random blah scenes interesting.
|
I don't have any problem with Davis having Latina sororities, etc. But I do think that if the Greek life office wants to properly support Greek life, they ought to make it more clear on their website what the different sororities are about. Most GL sites have a page of brief stats on groups - or allow them to put in their own mission statement. Right there a rushee could see, "OK, these are the Latina sororities, these are what I'm interested in."
I know actual students may not get their info from the website. But with that many groups to choose from, how do they find out about them on campus? If you know nothing about Greeks, how do you even find out that Latina or Asian sororities exist? Most people know about NPC groups and NPHC groups if they know anything (and lots of us didn't going into college). As it is, I think it would be hard to make an _informed_ decision about which sorority to choose. For example, if I went to UC Davis, I'd probably consider the NPC sororities and the multi-cultural ones. But I'm willing to bet I'd hear all about formal rush long before I found out what the different multi-cultural groups have to offer. It's in the interest of all the Greeks on campus to make expressing an interest in Greek life easy and to let potential members know what their organizations have to offer. That doesn't mean they all have to do formal rush NPC style, but I sure hope there is some sort of rush/Greek life booklet that tells women what their options are, how to rush each group, etc.! Like I said, perhaps being on campus all this is clearer, but I get the impression Greek Life isn't well coordinated at Davis, and the groups aren't necessarily working together to benefit them all. That is, if the website is any indication, and it may not be. |
The more I watch this show, the more I think that it is an accurate portrayal of the pledging process.
Sure, at times some of them are a bit wild, but every pledge class has a few women that need to learn how to represent themselves as a member of their new sorority. The underlying theme is that these pledges are learning about themselves and growing through Sigma. The scene with Jordan and Candace in the bathroom could have happened in any one of our houses. The bonds of sisterhood that are being shown make me proud to be Greek. |
Re: Let's all say it: EDITING!!!
Quote:
Does this stuff happen? Of course it does! We can probably relate 80% of it to our own chapters. My issue with the show is its context. Following the pledge process of six girls who you stick in an MTV house is not a portrayal of sorority life. You could film a show in a dorm with all these same rules and watch the same thing we're watching under the guise of a "sorority documentary." |
ok i might repeat what people have all ready posted, but i was too tired to read all the post. well you know how in the opening credits they show pictures of all of them.....well has anyone notice that in the last shot there are other sororities names written in the background. like Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Delta Gamma. are these sororities on ucdavis? or did they just write whatever sorority came to their head?
|
Yes, I was wondering this as well! The "DG" letters caught my eye on the first airing and i've been curious ever since, SigKapQueen...
|
So here is where people are now posting at MTV.com since the Sorority Life message board is down. Some of the SAEPi's have posted there too (they seem pretty legit, i.e: really don't seem like imposters...)
So go here and say what you think. It is actually on the Taildaters board... *NEW* Sorority Life Message Board at MTV |
SL sucks!
Just wanted to add my two cents.
I personally hate the show Sorority Life. The only reason I find myself watching it is that maybe, just maybe, they will show something interesting. The girls do arts and crafts and leave whenever they want - WTF! If I ever left during an event all hell would have broken loose. I also think that Sorority Life gives a bad name to other sororities out there and for new girls who are going to rush this fall. We aren't all about drinking and partying, are we?! We are known to have our fun, but I think rushees look past that when we know, in our hearts, that we have other things to offer as a sorority. The show basically sucks in my words. Does anybody actually agree? |
