Major: Music/Voice/Performance (Opera, Broadway, Jazz) Minor: African American Studies I am currently working with my husband at Hewitt Associates, while I am auditioning for different broadway shows. I will also be performing at the Lyric Opera this Nov. (My very first concert yeahhhh me) and I am hoping that will be open some doors for me. Undergraduate Minor- Elementary Education
Graduate Major- Educational Technology Future Ph.D. Program of Study- Instructional Technology I think that for those people who are still in school, I recommend publishing an article and presenting at conferences. That is the easiest way to network and learn new skills. Also, getting work study /fellowships /internships /assitantships in your area would also be beneficial. Good luck on those of you who are graduating or looking for graduate schools! Peace and Blessings! |

Major: Radio/TV
Minor:Broadcast Journalism Graduation: May 03 I've been the Sports Director here on campus for the past year. I do play-by-play and color commentary for all sports. I just grew up playing all sports, and it's become one of my passions in life. I've interned at a small radio station, but didn't get to be involved with the sports programming which was unbearable. I found out my happiness in life is being near athletics. I'm lucky I found that out before I got out there and signed a contract doing something I'd hate. While I know I have to pay my dues, knowing what makes me happy will keep me striving. Internships are not only valuable for the experience but for the outlook it gives in on what you might or might not want to do for the rest of your life. Look out for me on ESPN, FoxSports, or on any sideline! Best of wishes to all those striving for their dreams as well! AFAM and Eng.
I just changed my major last week and I am absolutely thrilled to say I am now an African-American Studies major (English minor):D Because of the raggedy public school system, I didn't really start learning about the accomplishments of African-Americans (besides Dr. Martin Luther King jr and Rosa Parks during Black History Month) until college, and now I'm HOOKED. I LOVE it and I'm excellent at it! And I feel more people need to be educated in this area (including history, culture, sociological aspects, etc.) I struggled with the decision for a long time because I'm used to stability and security which you can have with nursing, primary and secondary education, business, etc. But I thought about what I really wanted to do and have stepped out on faith. I plan on getting my M.A. in English (African American Literature) from A&T, and then pursuing my Ph.D. This will combine two of my favorite things....EDUCATION and my CULTURE so that I can teach on the college level. There are so many things I want to do now like intern at the Smithsonian African Art Museum, Study abroad in Africa, and do more research. I am so excited!

For pre-med, med, dental, pre-dental, pharmD...health students
Hey y'all check out this website, pretty informative for people in the health fields: pre-med, pre-dental, med, dental students, pharmd, residents...
www.studentdoctor.net also check out their forums, its like here, the people there are on top of their stuff too. Also any pre-meds , or those considering taking the MCAT and applyin to med schl & stuff, holla at me. I've some gr8 tips to share :p |
Thank you Miseducated!!! I am looking to take the MCAT next year so any tips you could forward me would be greatly appreciated! I am going to a medical university next year initially to do an accelerated graduate nursing track to become a Nurse Practitioner, but I think I still want to become a doctor. I know it sounds crazy to go that far as a nurse, and then go to med school, but that's what I want to do. I also feel that if I stick with my original plan to graduate from MUSC as a N.P., then apply to MUSC's S.O.M., I would be among the 'preferred' applicants. I will definitely throroughly check this site out (probably when I am bored at work ;) ), I just skimmed over it just now.
Did you watch the show "Med School" on the discovery channel? They followed students in all four years of med school through their first and last semesters. I really enjoyed that show! Anyway, good looking out...and I will look forward to any info you could pass my way. My primary address is OneSavvyDiva@aol.com, or you could use the addy in my profile! Thanks!:D |

Primarily my current job fuctions include dealing with clients in our Private Bank (investable assets of over 3 million+), and preparing 1041's, 1099's, 1040's, and writing SQL reports to help with this homegrown system called Trustease. Major(s): Textile Design and Marketing double
Minor: Music My dream is to become a singer/ producer/ song writer after I graduate. I've been singing all my life, writing for the past 8 years, and producing for a year and a half. I was going to be a Music major @ 1st but so many people auditioned so I was accepted as a minor student. If I wanted to be considered a major I had to audition again, I was like Hell-to-tha-nawl and plus the theory and the eartraining was hard. I declared TDM 2nd semester freshman year and been sewing and designing ever since. I want design for recording artists one day and design bridal wear and evening wear 4 women, then work my way down to men's wear and have my own line of clothing (JUST LIKE EVERYBODY AND THEIR MOMMA). I also want to act (movies/ stage/ tv, choreograph, draw for a comic book company, any and everything I can. So wish me luck........you may be listening to my songs, wearing my clothes, watching my movies and doing my dances one day. |
It feels so good to finally be able to post a response to this thread. I registered with GC as a rising senior in High School and I'm finally in college so:
Questions: What is/was your college major(s)? I am a Public Relations major and Iwould like to pursue a double major in African-American Studies. What is/was your college minor(s)? I dont have any minors yet but I'm thinking about Internet Imaging or Photography. What do you plan to do with your major? I have no idea where my major will lead me but my heart wants to do something in the non-profit sector. I have this desire to change the world someday. Maybe I will only change people thoughts, but even that will have a huge impact. What internships have you pursued to better prepare yourself for the working world? I haven't had any internships yet but I have applied for an internship with Breakthrough Collaborative (a teaching internship) and I hope to do that. |
Re: College Majors/Minors
FOR THE CURRENT STUDENTS
What do you plan to do with your major? What internships have you pursued to better prepare yourself for the working world?[/b] [/B][/QUOTE] My current major is Finance. I am currently also pursuing obtaining my license in real estate. With my degree, I plan on working for a retirement firm. African Americans and other minorities are the "working" poor. I hope to be able to take my degree and help educate others in the community on how to save their earnings so that they can live comfortably later on in life. |
I am a Mass Communications Major with emphasis in broadcast journalism. I want to go to law school and eventually be either a political analyst or host and produce my own show geared towards the political issues facing minorities. This would emcompass political leaders and their platforms, different bills before congress, how to contact your mayor, representative, congressperson etc. Also giving minorities the pros and cons to big ticket issues that we many times don't know much about, just what the politician wants us to know.

Re: College Majors/Minors
My Major is Computer Information Systems
My Minor is Accounting I would like to work in the Social Services via the Government. The SYSTEM needs some serious debugging. I want to help the less fortunate in the African-American Community. No internships yet. Just work experience in semi-related fields. I intern next semester though - only have 2 more classes. Also, I'm in an organization in my school for CIS students called CISTA. I gain practical, hands on experience (like installing computers/software in area schools). We help the community and we learn things that our professors don't teach. I'm also a member of the American Marketing Association at school. When designing databases, websites, etc. I will need marketing skills to help my client sell his product. I will need to market my skills as well. |
Major: International Business (Honors) with a concentration in the Asian-Pacific...all this means is that I will be writing a thesis in my senior year and many of my electives have been about the Asian-Pacific such as learning Japanese. Konnichiwa Sorors! :D Anatatachi wa ogenki desu ka? (How are you all?)
I graduate in Spring 2005 (if it be the Lord's Will) but I will be interning at Disney this spring. |

It's amazing what a difference a year and a couple of setbacks can make. I'm still on my original plan, (somewhat, I want to pursue a Master's in Nurse Anesthesia instead of Nurse Practitioner), yet things have just been postponed for about a year and a half. :( What about ya'll? |
am i the only one not in love with my major? ive been tryin to figure it out for 2 years now, and ive been through all of them: journalism, economics, afam studies, math, photography, communications, and now secondary education.
all of these things are great, but i doont have 100% passion for them. what if i dont want to be an educator after this semester? i cant fool around anymore, im about to be a junior, and i cant afford to keep "testing things out." i've been to advisors and things, and everything sounds great, but not enough passion to do it. :( any advice? |
Although I have had a professional career in procrastination, I somehow wound up in graduate school (...meaning I wasnt ready to enter that twilight zone (gasp) known as the real world).
I went to a conservatory in where I majored in Piano Music Performance and minored in Mass Media.. (And to think I actually thought I could get a job) "How has it prepared me"....the question is how much time do you have.... Firstly I learned the most important lesson in life.."Its all politics" ..I actually learned that sometimes your teacher "really does not like you". and there is nothing you can do about it. Going to a white school I learned that they were not exactly welcoming to a chocolate sister who played everything from jazz to classical (and they especially hated gospel music) However, with all of the drama of going to a conservatory I learned discipline...patience....strength...when to speak and when to shut up.....patience....how to clear my own path where there is no trail...and did I mention patience...... The internships I had was with the Columbus symphony, The Recording Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (aka The GRAMMYS) and currently I am at Steven Spielbergh's movie company Dreamworks (hey, nothing to do with music but the free advance movie screenings are cool)...What I learned most about my internship with the GRAMMYS was that everybody in the music industry, especially those who want to seem important, want to give you their verbal resume and whose "tour" they are on and when they go to the "studio" (blah blah blah). But I learned how to do things in a very professional manner, from interacting with artist to networking etc. I also learned that I dont like working for other people. So currently I am a concert pianist.....(I decided this because it is obvious that I dont like to work a 9-5...and clearly I am a diva in training...yes I am the spoiled baby of the family) So lets just assume that if I dont become the next Lang Lang, or build a conservatory of my own, (or marry a rich guy)...lets just assume that I will be in a world of trouble. |

Questions:
In Undergrad I majored in Family Studies. What are you doing now professionally? I am currently working as a Case Manager for a local Domestic Violence Center. How did your major(s)/minor(s) prepare you to do your job? It really didn't. I have had 2 casemanagement jobs since graduating Dec 99 and my on the job training helped prepare me for the job that I am in now. My internship was in a adolescent girl group home. As for Grad, I am majoring in Public Administration with a concentration in Public Policy I plan to work for a victim's rights organization, hopefully dealing with Child Abuse Legislature. |
