The Adelphian Society was created in 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia; the first secret society in the world for college women. In 1852 The Philomathean Society was created, which today is known as Phi Mu. In 1904 the Adelphian Society voted to become national, and in 1905 became Alpha Delta Phi. Then in 1913 became Alpha Delta Pi, because there was already a fraternity using the letters Alpha Delta Pi. I hope that does straighten up a little of what has been said, because people were refuring to ADPi as ADPhi and what not.

Alpha Kappa Lambda’s Alpha chapter was founded at the University of California in Berkeley. As a side note, AKL was the first national fraternity founded west of the Rocky Mountains. Regretfully the Alpha chapter’s charter is held in trust (i.e. no longer active). The oldest AKL chapter currently operating is Gamma at the University of Illinois.

as has been mentioned, our alpha chapter is no longer in existence because wesleyan college got rid of greek life... that's also the case with our beta and gamma chapters... salem college and mary baldwin college do not have sororities either... therefore our oldest chapter is delta, at the university of texas in austin.
random: allegheny lore says the phi kappa psi chapter on our campus is the longest continuously running chapter in existence. |
I never realized Phi Mu was second oldest... we don't have it at our school, and I really don't pay attention to sororities that don't have charters here (sorry, no offense!) But that's neat.
Whoever said that Lewis school was the Psi chapter of Delta Gamma... where'd you hear that? I always assumed it was Alpha, still. Anyway, Lewis school was where we were founded, and it's no longer in existance. Our Beta is at the University of Washington. I don't have my Watchwords with me (our new member ed had to borrow mine b/c I had notes) so if any of this is wrong, please correct me!:) |
Yep, Carolina you're correct! I'm at Beta (UW) and it's awesome being the oldest on campus :) Except that our house is pretty ancient too, it was built in the early 1900's!
