Y'all, look. I still wish that John would close this thread because it's not accomplishing anything. People have stated, and then restated their opinions and all it's doing at this point is hurting feelings. I seriously doubt that any of the regulars here are going to change their minds or methods because someone was ugly to them on this thread. And if you flame someone a second time, you'd better bet they're going to dig in their heels; you know you would and I would too.

Let's just agree to disagree and get back to discussing the particulars of Greek life!

A pirate walks into a bar w/ a steering wheel hanging from his zipper, and orders a drink.

"Arrrgh, Cane rum and cola please me lad."

Barkeep replies, "You know you have a steering wheel coming out from your zipper, right sir?"

The pirate responds: "Arrgh! That must be what's driving me nuts."

Can--
I'm all down for it...it's just certain individuals feel that it's important to make a daily effort to tell me I'm a bitch. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

No one should have to leave because of that, it's a free country!

So basically, in a free country, we would be able to say what we want (sarcastic or otherwise) without being attacked for it, right? Y'all kill me with this irony bit, I swear. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

I can't speak for other friends/interests, but I just realized why I bite my tongue in these boards, and yes, believe me I do.

I have been hesitant to speak my mind because of my interest, and I don't want to jeopardize it. Yet, when I see ill behavior, I want to react to it. But, even though I have Senior status, I feel like I'm being regarded as a Junior. I am NOT the new people coming in, asking "stupid" questions or saying I am going to be an XYZ, bt when some of y'all smell blood, you just grab a flamethrower, and we all know how those work.

I used to worry about how my comments are received. We're told not to act brashly, thi could affect our chances, but GLO members have had carte blanche. I used to think of this as my board, as well, and I need to get back to that sense of sharing. So, since we're all open and above-board, I will stop holding back, I mean, we're all equal, and you all respect droll humor, of which I have been abundantly blessed.

HeidiHo 05-21-2001 12:18 AM

There's this class I have where this one guy is a know-it-all, another guy never says anything intelligent, another is insightfull but sometimes rude, aother girl has a dry sense of humor that I sometimes don't get right away one girl is always apologetic when she speaks & this one guy always says that he's dumb.
Maybe that's this board, my class, my work, and the world. People vary & you won't like 'em all. You learn from different people & go on with our life. Everyone just needs to relax.
Heidi

That would work if we weren't all members of GLO's and wanting to portray them in a good light, while discussing issues. I think it just calls for a higher level of decent behavior and some manners. There are those who are considering becoming members. They take an opinion away with them of all of us, even when it isn't everyone of us being snippy. I'm just shocked at how many don't give a flip how they represent their organizations with their postings. I can take it and I can dish it out, but I just don't think this is the appropriate place to "let it all hang out."

KDChi Penguin 05-21-2001 04:43 PM

ok, so the same "stupid questions" are going to be asked anyway and no one is changing their attitudes so whats new? To be honest, anyone who is active in their house knows that the same questions are asked time and time again each semester and so they get answered in a way that the prospective rushee gets enthusiastic about going greek and that is what we want. We don't want to be rude and discourage them because we are tired of being asked the same questions. We want to encourage not discourage. How many can say they are sick of repeating the history of their chapter establishment or even the establishment of your particular sorority? The answer is never!

I doubt anyone is going to change who they've been their whole lives because of something you posted on a message board. Seriously.
I've never asked anyone to change their personality, I really wouldn't give a hoot if they did; nor am I about to change mine, which is to say that when someone is rude, I will call them on it.

My point (which you obviously missed) is that everyone has a right to ask anything they damn well please, and if regulars are tired of the same questions, imagine how tired other regulars are of hearing "go search" and "all Greeks are equal, go into rush w/ an open mind" as responses.

SERIOUSLY.

pledgetrainer2 05-23-2001 01:58 AM

No one said that they thought they would change anyone's opinion or their manners, but at least we can show the rest of the world that we aren't all the same-making rude comments to new comers and having arrogant attitudes. That is EXACTLY what we are saying we aren't to the world, and then have too many exposing that very attitude. It doesn't matter what kind of fancy description of great things you have done or are doing, if you appear to be a jerk to those who want to ask questions or express their opinions on this board.

I thought not.

People on the internet deserve the same respect.

KappaGirl...I agree...you would respect those when they knew you in person, it only give us a bad name when we're rude in any forum. I like to stick up for my sisters too!!

All I'm saying is this. Obviously "calling people out" on being rude isn't working, so maybe that's not the best approach. I suppose there's a difference between doing that and attempting to change personalities, but both are futile attempts, as proven by this board.

As a non-greek who hopes to BECOME greek, all I have to say about the way greeks present themselves is the following. There are some rude and arrogant people I've met from the org I want to be a part of. HOWEVER, I am intelligent enough to know that they are not representative of the org as a whole, and certainly not of greek life in general.

JUst a note on communicating, where possible people should confront others in private (email) if they think a specific person is being rude or whatever, and they think they have the moral authoriyt to call the person on it.

In private people are generally less defensive.

I don't remember anyone ever saying "all Greeks are equal" relative to rush. As far as telling people to go into rush with an open mind, I'll keep saying that till I'm blue in the face. Why? Because it makes sense. Would you rather see responses like "the Omega Mu's suck, unless you're desperate don't pledge them"? I'm sure that would go over well. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

There aren't always people on here from the schools the rushees are asking about, and I'd rather give a generic response than have them feel ignored.
