ETA: Yep, in fact there is even a thread entitled "AOIIs and The Junior League."

I think you may be perpetuating negative stereotypes about an organization with which you have no experience.

Sound familiar? It kinda jumps up and down on my irony button. ;)

I think you must have learned the word irony from Alanis Morissette because I don't think you know what it means. Thanks for bringing up a completely unrelated thread. OMG. There are AOIIs that are Junior Leaguers. Who'd have thought? Where did I say there was anything wrong with the JL? You have a little something wrong with reading comprehension or else get overwhelmingly defensive when someone says anything remotely negative about JL. No, I have never tried to join the JL. Relaying my sister's experience isn't spreading negative propaganda, it is illustrating the point that JL is not always completely open to everyone. My sister loved JL when she was in Seattle. Not so much when she moved home. I know exact details including chapters, and I didn't have to experience it myself to know it's true. She's not some cousin of some friend's roommate. Regardless, your fall back defense that sorority chapters don't always accept sisters that transfer is unrelated and a distraction from the original topic. We are discussing whether or not the OP would be turned down. Whether or not a chapter of a sorority would refuse her if she transferred is moot since she has not been given a bid in the first place.

As an aside, you might notice that you get an overwhelmingly negative reaction on GC. It's because of your persistent aggressive manner. When you respond, try to take a deep breath and realize people are not attacking you and everything you hold dear before responding. Every post you make sounds like a mean attempt to put someone in their place. Definitely not a way to make friends or influence people.

Oh and incidentally for the oh so charming poster who quotes me like it's your job, I didn't say that joining the nontrad students group would be a substitute for being in a sorority.

Oh my Jesus, yes, regarding the competitiveness of ANY organization.

If there's a job quoting you, I would like to apply. Vastly more interesting than my current employment.

Don't understand what it is about Hart + damn near everyone else here on GC, but my God, how exhausting it must be to be offended by EVERYTHING one reads on the internet and to have the compulsion to aggressively DEFEND everything that hurts one's feelings.

All that being said, we were due for this. Love y'all!

That isn't at all what you suggested, this is what you stated:

It appears that the assumptions were your own. Your comments (made with AUTHORITY) were based on nothing more than a negative stereotype -- the same sort of "tent talk" that is discouraged here.

I agree that I do get an overwhelmingly negative reaction from the same clique of dominant forum personalities. Some of you feel free to challenge and respond however you wish to others (sans the deep breath), veer off-topic, and pile-on, but react dramatically if challenged yourselves.

I'm really not that bothered if someone disagrees with me. It's a discussion forum.

This seems overly dramatic -- where, exactly, did I go "for the jugular" on this thread? Your characterization of "every post" I make seems a lil exaggerated too.

I just don't see a skirmish worthy of popcorn on this thread.

I'll let you in on something. There is no clique. I'm not friends with 33girl or Old Row or Titchou, but when you start making aggressive, ridiculously unnecessary statements I stand up for other posters no matter who they are. Before you came around, I couldn't remember a time I actually agreed with some of these people.

You go for the jugular when you go digging for unrelated threads to pull in my sorority affiliation into the argument. What exactly does that have to do with anything other than to inflame the situation? You dial it up to 11 on every single thread you jump into by bringing people's organizations into the discussion in an offensive manner. You may not see it, but every other member of GC does, and no other single member has been the source of more closed threads than you. That's not a record you should be proud to own, btw.

The way you could have handled this discussion on JL is to discuss YOUR experience in JL rather than discount others stories as simply negative propaganda. Just as in Greek Life, negative stories are often well deserved. You and the Junior League would have been better served by this discussion than the defensive ugliness that we just saw. THAT'S how GC is supposed to work.

Ain't this the truth! I'm not sure AOII Angel and I ever had a civil word for each other until Hart came along. So when I received a PM from her, I was a little slow to open it. But what a sweet message it was offering Panhellenic support in light of Hart's comments about my chapter of initiation. I have much more respect for her now and make an effort to see things from her point of view more than I did in the past. So, if anything good has come out of all this, that's at least one. Thanks, AOII Angel. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

Actually, what 33girl said is true. READ what she said. She said that it is competitive in SOME PLACES. Not everywhere. Some places. That is perfectly true. And yes, I can say that with some authority, since I have been a dues-paying member of 3 different AJLI-affiliated Leagues in 3 different parts of the country since 2002, including being a delegate to an ODI where I met women from countless other Leagues and learned about their processes. There are some Leagues that are extremely competitive. It may not be the norm anymore, but that doesn't make 33girl's statement anything less than absolutely true.

(And I am quite certain I am not in any kind of clique on GC.)

amIblue? 11-21-2012 10:48 AM

Any time you end up with 33girl and Titchou coming down on the same side of an issue, whatever that issue may be, it's as rare and as brief as a solar eclipse.

ETA:

I really loved learning the history behind your name. I've always wondered why Cajuns named their kids things like T Bob and T June. Now I know. ;)

Old_Row 11-21-2012 12:04 PM

I never admonished it for its age. I admonished it for behaving the way it does at its advanced age. I think you are supposed to be more mature at some point and I keep trying to picture my momma doing the things it does. I just can't imagine it in real life.

I do know the real definition of irony too. Like when it admonished me for having my user name because it makes it think I am elitist after it spent all its time focused on being mean and negative about Ms. Titchou's chapter. I think that is being a hypocritical bully.

I hope everyone has a wonderful turkey day that is filled with yumminess and love!

Well, I guess nothing unites people like a common enemy. ;)

But since you brought it up...

I sent the mother that you were battering on that thread a supportive PM. She sent me several too.

Not surprisingly, the posters piling on this thread are many of the same ones who were piling on and ridiculing the mother on that thread:

You quoted and responded to me, not the other way around, to inject that the JL was mean to your friend. You then became emotional over my analogy. And there are quite a few points that are analogous to Greek discussions here. Imagine if I had suggested that in a group so large, surely she could find some people to ‘click’ with … advice that is routinely passed out here.

A number of you practically push one another out of the way to correct inaccurate minutia on this forum – but melt down and argue ad nauseam if anyone comments on yours.

There was no disrespect intended toward your GLO in linking the thread about AOIIs in Junior League – there is nothing inflammatory on that thread regarding your GLO or JL whatsoever.

On the other hand, you pull your GLO into everything dramatic and contentious you post – it’s your username. How is your GLO "better served" by "defensive ugliness?"

I think Titchou and I do basically agree on things actually, we just might disagree about the way of putting them across (if that makes any sense). :) No, the real amazement in this thread is the fact that NBH and I did a two-part joke.

Does anyone else smell azure you-know-what?

The only dramatic things I post on GC seem to involve you. Isn't that odd? Most GC'ers seem to think I'm fairly benign and easy going, dare I say nice. I having stated my affiliation, unlike you, will stand by my behavior on GC. Other AOIIs know who I am, and I am known Internationally in AOII. Trust me, I behave in accordance with the ritual and teachings of AOII. It must be nice to hide behind the anonymity of only your school. Keep believing you are some innocent in all of these threads. That post was not innocent, and linking the AOIIs in JL thread wasn't meant to be nice and you know it. Your tone is anything but nice.

AZTheta 11-21-2012 03:12 PM

1) Re: "battering". There are several of us who recall the exact sequences and contents of posts in the threads in question, and that interpretation is not at all consistent with what happened. Perception does not always equal reality. See my post upthread re: feelings are not facts.

2) If you guys think the JL is elitist, well, anyone in Tucson can join here. Seriously. They let anyone in. They are too busy with their projects to worry about what zip code you live in, or any of that other nonsense. There are other, much more exclusive organizations here. JL is not that way.

3) I am a little annoyed that you guys are having caramel popcorn and wine and all of a sudden I am out in the cold. Why was I not invited or included? I am, after all, the most Panhellenic-spirited poster on GreekChat. And, I bake. Did I get put in the corner and no one told me? My feelings are seriously hurt, my knickers are in a twist, I popped my pearls, boo-bucking-hoo.

4) What is your GLO, Hartofsec? I know it can't possibly be Chi Omega or Alpha Delta Pi because their published creeds sure don't reflect in your posts. I've taken the time to read up on almost every NPC's published creed or symphony or values or mission statement; this month I am celebrating a different NPC GLO every day on my FB page. I have learned a lot about the other 25 sororities (and, after I finish with the NPC, I'm doing the NPHC. And then I'll take requests for any other GLOs).

5) 33 - I caught the NBH thing, my jaw still hurts from hitting the floor. AAMOF this entire thread is just one big jaw-drop, and it's all because Mercury is in retrograde. And don't be calling up she who shall not be named, please.

6) If this thread gets locked after I post, or there are no more posts, then I know it is true: my power to kill threads is intact.

Never, never would I cast you aside!! She was just esp nice to me at a bad time so I needed to reciprocate and start being nice to her. We need to be inclusive - though selective...or is it that we should discriminate? I can't keep it straight. Lordy, I'm just getting too old for all this. I swannee!

thank you, Titchou, and I won't take it as a cut against me that you spelled discriminate correctly, even though I left out the "r" in discriminatory, and the OP seized on that and ignored all the other awesomesauce stuff I posted, because I'm so spiritual and deep, and it's okay if you are friends with other people, I can share. Swanee - Old Southern slang for "swear." (not curse, that's a whole nother ball of wax, but promise) It's kinda like "I DO declare!"

And I had to get some work done or I would have made more caramel corn.

I have cane syrup and sorghum in the cupboard - I was just going to make the pecan (that's pah-can - not pee-can Alex frickin' Guarnachelli) with fresh pecans from my inlaws trees for tomorrow. I will make extra for us to share.
(and throw in a couple shots of brandy....)

Happy Thanksgiving!!

LOL. I know I've heard everything in there -- including "She didn't use Duke's mayonnaise."

Titchou 11-21-2012 09:28 PM

You really do have to be Southern to get that one! I've even said "does this come in pink?" But it didn't - though a lot do - but the one I wanted didn't so I had to settle for a dull silver finish....oh well, it shoots just as good as a pink one would. And I don't have to worry about it clashing with my wardrobe....

HQWest 11-21-2012 09:41 PM

LOL heard them all. I think they left out a couple though.

For example overheard while buying Thanksgiving items
"well how are yo-u-uu? I haven't seen you in ages!"
"well - lost my husband.
Pause
"it was the secretary"

That and "Mama 'n'em" are my wife's favorites. She has no gun, so she's never asked "Does this come in pink," but she probably would have asked for purple anyway.

Bless her heart.

Another one they left out: "Precious." As in "Aren't you precious?

"Bless your heart."

MysticCat: I post a photo of the badge as my profile photo, usually post a photo of the flower as the cover, and write a blurb about the GLO with a link to the website.

One of my close friends serves on a Homeless Outreach Board and he was super impressed with Theta Phi Alpha's philanthropies and statement of purpose/philosophy (that was today's GLO).

I'll post the salute to Sinfonia for you here (if this thread doesn't get locked) or can send you a link to what I post.

I am purposedly not entering into all this Southern Speak convo. You guys need subtitles. It's stressing me out.
