MoxieGrrl 05-22-2003 10:20 PM

Diary of a Mad Bride - required reading for anyone getting married. It's such a cute book! :)

I'm also reading a book called Romeo right now. It's a psychological/serial killer thing. I *love* books like that, and this one is really good!

Anxiously awaiting the arrival of the next one in June....

They are really a change for me, because I mainly read mysteries and theatre biographies.

I don't care much for fantasy either, but I'm reading the first Harry Potter Book. It is so cute. I also wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It is so good. Hopefully I can get the 2nd book at Half Priced Books tommorrow

GeekyPenguin 05-23-2003 01:07 AM

Yay for this thread! I am going to the library soon and stocking up on fluffy girly books to cheer myself up.

KerriMarie 05-23-2003 02:57 AM

I'm such a fan of fluffy chick fiction - like cotton candy for my brain! Mmmm, cotton candy... Bridget Jones is good, and The Edge of Reason had me laughing out loud. I have also read and loved all of the Shopaholic books. I also got The Nanny Diaries recently, and absolutely loved it. Funny stuff.

She's Come Undone is a slightly heavier book (no pun intended), but it's amazingly well written and a great story. I couldn't put it down - I sat in class reading it. It's really wonderful.

I absolutely HATED Four Blondes. I thought it was crap.

Along the lines of Harry Potter, I often re-read The Chronicles of Narnia when I'm bored and looking for something to read. They're a bit preachy, but still good and they're nice reminders of my childhood.

KappaStargirl 05-23-2003 10:20 AM

I've been on a big Neil Gaiman kick lately. For those of you that listen to Tori Amos and keep hearing a mention of a guy named Neil, that's him. The line "If you need me me and Neil'll be/Hangin' out with the Dream King" is a reference to his brilliant Sandman series. I swear, I am moving to Minnesota and having his babies.

I'm also reading his American Gods. Other books I'm in the middle of: The Lovely Bones by Alice Seibold, The Subtle Knife by Phillip Pullman, Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote. Of course, that's not counting all the stuff I've bought but haven't read yet, or the stack of overdue library books on my dresser.

Of course, all of this is just filler until the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

If anyone wants recommendations, I suggest The Book Report Network. I review for them :)

texas*princess 05-23-2003 11:17 AM

I'm all about the fluffy chick fiction too! :)

Last night I just could not put down Eating the Chesire Cat ! I just wanted to know what was going to happen next!

I guess I'm going to have to order another book because it looks like I might finish this one tonight (and I just started reading it yesterday!)

texas*princess 05-24-2003 03:37 PM

 I finished reading Eating the Chesire Cat and OHMYGAWD!!!! That book was so awesome!!! It kept me on the edge of my seat until I read the very last page!!!!

Silverblue 05-24-2003 03:41 PM

I prefer nonfiction and history. Right now, I'm reading Jacques Pepin's autobiography, "The Apprentice." If you're at all interested in cooking -- Food Network junkies, I'm talking to you --you'd love it.

Steeltrap 05-24-2003 03:56 PM

Women's fiction reader

I also like what I call "urban women's fiction," going back to the early 1990s when Terry McMillan did Waiting to Exhale, which came out about five years prior to Sex and the City.

I'm looking forward to Trading Up, Candace Bushnell's new book and Maneater, by Gigi Levangie Grazer. Right now, I'm reading Always Wear Joy by Susan Fales-Hill.

LeslieAGD 05-25-2003 04:50 PM

For anyone who likes Historical Romance novels, I started reading a new author named Cathy Maxwell who is awesome!

docetboy 05-25-2003 04:58 PM

You can't go wrong with Tom Clancy

Hey! What exact order is the Shopaholic series? I have the first one and just started reading it. I love it! But I was confused as to what order they went in? Thanks!

DZHBrown 05-25-2003 05:56 PM

The 2nd one is Shopaholic Takes Manhattan and the 3rd is Shopaholic Ties the Knot. Great series!!!

Confessions of a Shopaholic
Shopaholic Takes Manhattan
Shopaholic Ties the Knot

I'm pissy they are only doing three! My sisters were all down last week and one of them tried to read the books out of order - she got yelled at!

John Grisham is also a good author

texas*princess 05-27-2003 01:02 AM

Since I read Eating the Cheshire Cat WAY quicker than I thought I would, I didn't order another book quick enough, so I'm patiently waiting for my next few to trickle into my mailbox.

My Summer Reading List got three times as long when I made a trip to B&N the other day... so we'll see if I finish them all :)

His stories are really good, but when you get to the end of the book, they just...quit. They never have a proper ending. It's like you're just left hanging and thinking, "Where's the last 20 pages?"

greeklawgirl 06-04-2003 02:26 PM

For those ladies out in GC-land who are looking for some hysterical, grrl-power type of books, I HIGHLY recommend Jill Connor-Browne's Sweet Potato Queens series:

"God Save the Sweet Potato Queens"
"The Sweet Potato Queens Book of Love" and
"The Sweet Potato Queens Big-Ass Cookbook and Financial Planner"

The Sweet Potato Queens series has a highly Southern flavor but it is THE anti-"Southern Belle Primer." Just hilarious. :D

I also highly enjoyed Susan Jane Gilman's "Kiss My Tiara: How To Rule The World as a Smartmouth Goddess." With a title like that, what girl could resist??? ;)

The Sweet Potato Queens are precious! My aunt has those in the guest bedroom at her house and I can't ever sleep because I can't put them down!

texas*princess 06-05-2003 01:54 PM

Finally got another book to read! Running In Heels by Anne Maxed!

I don't know how I'm going to read everything on my Summer Read List!!! It is getting longer everyday!!!

I am definately going to check out the Sweet Potato Queens books.. they sound cute!

Kiss My Tiara was an awesome book!!!!

Jane Green, who wrote jemima j and mr. maybe, became one of my favorite authors when I was in school in London. Have you read Bookends by her yet?

mu_agd 06-05-2003 03:30 PM

yep that's about how long my list is... but i take advantage of my commute to and from work to read all of those books.

my dad said that my sister mailed to their house a box of books for me.. i can't wait to see what's in it! I'm like a little kid in a candy store when i enter barnes & nobles, or in this case, the book box!

I'm totally like that too!!!

LeslieAGD 06-06-2003 07:49 PM

Has anyone read the book "The Devil Wears Prada"?
I saw it in the bookstore and considered picking it up.

That book is on my summer reading list!

Right now I'm in the middle of Running In Heels, and it's cute.

Has anyone read the book The Room-mating Season ? It's about 4 roomies in New York in the 60's? It looks interesting, but I'm not sure if I want to read it or not?

CatStarESP4 06-12-2003 02:05 AM

I am currently reading Pentecost Alley by Anne Perry. I have read almost all of her Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mysteries. I am also writing a mystery myself.

xok85xo 06-12-2003 04:17 PM

finished jemima j, loved it..

also read 'cats meow'..ugh..i read it because i have a hard time putting something down once i've started it, but i didn't really care for it..believe me, i'm just as materialistic as the next person but the main character was just far too vapid, self absorbed, and naive to like.

AAgammagirl 06-17-2003 11:51 AM

hey everyone,
i just started reading "The Boy Next Door" by Meggin Cabot last night. it's hilarious. i can't put it down.
i got the title from "Live with Regis and Kelly", it's one of Kelly Ripa's book club picks. Check out her list. i've also read The Bachelor by Carly Phillips. it was good too.
Cya!

MoxieGrrl 06-17-2003 11:55 AM

I'm proud to say that for $4.99 I am the owner of Big Beautiful Doll aka The Anna Nicole Story. Hee! I'll let everyone know if it's good or not. :)

texas*princess 06-17-2003 12:37 PM

yay! all finished with Running In Heels! It was a cute book... although it seemed that everything that possibly *could* go wrong, actually did for poor Nat :p

My next book is going to be The Pledge by Rob Keen. I've heard it doesn't exactly portray GLO's in the best of light, but that it's a great book to read, so I'm going to check it out to see what it's like, and I think it will be a nice change from the books I'm normally reading.

:)

I finished it last week. It took me awhile to get into it, but once I did I really loved it. If you hate your boss it's a must read! The boss in the book is a real (*&*&^!

I believe it was on the NY Bestsellers so if you go to B&N You should be able to get it for 30-40% off which I did which cut the price down nicely!

dixiesong3131 06-17-2003 01:01 PM

I"m a slacker and didn't read the whole thread, so bear with me kids :)

"Jemima J" is one of my favorite books- I'm glad to see other GCers enjoying it. I didn't enjoy "Mr. Maybe" as much, but "Bookends" was real good.

I saw someone mention "On The Verge" earlier in the boards, making me want to know, does anyone read the Red Dress Ink Books? www.reddressink.com It's a publication company that has the contempary women's fiction similar to Jane Green, etc. Must reads from that collection are "Milkrun" by Sarah Mlynowski and "See Jane Date".

My aunt's favorite book is "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden- she bought it for me for Christmas, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. However, I bought it for a friend for her birthday and she read it in less than three days! What I have got through is great.

Right now I'm reading "Sushi For Beginners" by Keyes (can't remember her first name, sorry). It seems a little slow starting, but I also have the uncorrected proof(yeah working at the college bookstore), so maybe they cut some for publication.

Enjoy my fellow bookworms!

MoxieGrrl 06-17-2003 02:32 PM

dixiesong - I *love* all of those Red Dress Ink books! They're such fun reads!

texas*princess - The Pledge is one of my fav books ever. Let me know what you think about it!

Oh yeah, I'm also reading The Unquiet Mind. It's an autobiography of a psychiatrist with bipolar disorder. Very good read. I"m also reading Identifying Child Molesters: Preventing Child Sexual Abuse by Recognizing the Patterns of Offenders. Kind of an odd read, but I want to know a little about everything that might come up when I get my counseling license!

Eirene_DGP 06-17-2003 02:37 PM

Some of my most recent books are:
On the Street Where You Live- Mary Higgins Clark
The Whiteness of Whiteness- Jane Lazzarro
The Nanny Diaries-Emma Mclaughlin and Nicola Kraus

Being that my degree is in English...I love to read different types of books...Clark's book is murder mystery and it's excellent. Lazzarro's has to deal with race relations (makes you think), and the one by Mclaughlin and Kraus is a really funny book.
