Detroit area here.
It went from gorgeous, sunny, and 100 degrees to hail storm from hell. We got golf ball sized hail and tree branches were raining from the sky. It only lasted about an hour, but it was definitely kind of scary. We also received a flash flood warning (second day in a row) until 9pm. Hopefully everything is okay now. |

Now this morning is a different story. Woke up at 4 and noticed the sky was unusually red. Then at 5am it was windy as hell. Then Mother Nature released the Kraken and all hell broke loose. I thought the hail was going to bust our skylights. I was a little scared. |
Again, no hail here, just thunder loud enough to shake the house, which was kind of cool to wake up to.
However, they just announced on the news that I-275 at Ford Rd has buckled due to the heat. I don't recall that happening ever before in this area. That's so freaky. |

My siblings and I ended up putting them in a hotel on Saturday- no reason two people in their 70s should be in a house without power in 100 degree heat for five days... |

I go to school in Springfield (southwest Ohio) and a lot of my friends/sisters live there year round. I know several of them are still without power. Hope things get straightened out soon!

After being a bridesmaid yesterday in 110 degree heat, I'd say the heat wave we are having is severe weather! I don't know how we made it but we did. Can't wait for a break and 80 degree weather. Never thought I'd ever say that.
|
It was the humidity that was the real kicker yesterday/last night. I went grocery shopping and my diet pepsi bottles had condensation on them just walking from the air conditioned store to the car. They had not been refrigerated! They were just from the shelf. It is already 88 degrees right now, at 9:46 am. Tomorrow though.. high of 80's. All next week too. It's going to feel great. But to get there, we're going to have some storms again.

Here's another report of road buckling in Michigan yesterday: "MDOT said the pavement was reading at 140 degrees and raised 1-foot off the ground due to the heat. Officials with MDOT said the cement under the asphalt got so hot that it heated up the freeway and they found weak spots at the seam of the road ultimately causing it to buckle."
I can't wait for the pot holes this winter! |

When it rains, it pours.
The good news - we are not in severe drought mode.
The bad news - FLOODING throughout the Houston area. More storms to come through this weekend. FLOODING! http://www.khou.com/weather/houston-...162330346.html |
bump

It is hotter in Michigan today than it is in Florida. We at least tied the record high for today and were just a couple degrees from the hottest day ever in Michigan. Ugh.
|
I'm pretty sure 75 south before 94 buckled. There was a large bump that I hit that wasn't there yesterday and I could see it was across the road.
|
Thank GOD for AC.
Yes, another midwesterner "I'm hot!" check-in. People always tell me "You're from California. You should be used to this!" What they don't realize is that where I'm from is 75 degrees in summer. Midwestern summers are FAR hotter. |
Just got home less than a half hour ago and it was still reading 95+ on the temp gauge in my car. This is crazy!
|
Wanna trade? I haven't seen the sun since June. It has been raining every single day, and it's just plain cold. I was wearing my winter coat and a scarf outside this week!
|
Mexico City is in the midst of a forty day, forty night rain. There's been a weeping rain-cloud displayed as its televised forecast every morning, for many days, when I watch the International Weather Report.

"WHILE NOT IMMEDIATELY LIKELY... IF A TORNADO IS SPOTTED... ACT QUICKLY AND MOVE TO A PLACE OF SAFETY IN A STURDY STRUCTURE..."
An excerpt from one of 6 severe weather warnings in my area (Massachusetts) an hour ago. Thanks, weather.com. I'm pretty sure I could figure out to run and hide myself if I saw a tornado coming at me. Yesterday it was reading 101 in my car on the way home from work, today the potential for tornadoes. So far just good cooling thunderstorms. :) |
Severe storms sweeping across the Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and a wee bit part of Michigan... rough night for some folks.

Lollapalooza in Grant Park (Chicago) was evacuated this afternoon due to the storms. Getting people out of there had to be like hearding cats...

They have some pictures of that evacuation on the above link. Looked nuts. We just got a little thunder. No big deal here. |
A huge tent at a festival collapsed due to a microburst. The tent had a few thousand people inside, no severe injuries fortunately.

We've been "enjoying" our usual summer weather: heat and humidity punctuated by the occasional thunderstorm.
CL&P's recent performance record (or lack thereof) has led us to buy a generator. Over the past couple of years, we've had several multi-day blackouts. (In one case, there was a severe thunderstorm just as we were about to leave for vacation. We were on just about the last plane that made it out of JFK. While our poor friends and neighbors coped, we were in Antigua getting our drunk on in blissful ignorance ... but I digress.) Now we just need to get an electrician in to install it. A couple of weeks ago, a microburst knocked out power overnight, and we tried to install the generator ourselves. We're lucky we didn't kill ourselves in the process. Note that, when we lose power, we lose EVERYTHING. We're on well water, so if the well pump has no power, you have what happens to be in your water tank, and that's it - no new water from the well. We have an electric stove, so without power, we can't cook except on the grill. We're on VOIP, so we lose our landline, and must rely on our cell phones (and heaven help us if they aren't charged). This evening, we were watching TV and deciding when to start cooking dinner when a thunderstorm rolled through and the lights started to flicker. We'd been planning to make an Indian curry on the stove and basmati rice in the microwave. We decided to prepare dinner early, while we still could! As it turns out, we didn't lose power (*knocks on wood*). Did I mention CL&P sucks big fat hairy balls the size of Cleveland? |
Hurricane Issac and his cones of uncertainity. Yikes!

My Mama is in the middle of those projections. Mobile County, AL.

Dr. Jeff Masters web site wunderground(dot)com with his take on Issac. This map can be scaled and scrolled.

Waiting and watching Isaac. We did the storm shopping. It seems as if all of south Louisiana is out buying storm supplies.
|
Glad we purchased bread and milk yesterday. Hope they narrow down landfall by tomorrow morning for people in coastal and/or coastal areas.

It looks as if Nicholls State University's Recruitment will be postponed for a while. I saw guys picking up recruitment signs around Thibodaux this afternoon.

Very good idea the way things are developing.

I am now really glad that Hypo didn't apply to and decide to attend Tulane. She's already having a rough transition. Being sheltered in place for a hurricane is a tough way to start your college career.
|
My niece and nephew aren't in school today behind this storm but since the Panhandle is out of the woods for the most part, they'll probably be in for the rest of the week. Seeing how happy my nephew is that school is out is hilarious.
I'm supposed to fly down there for Labor Day (my parents know but the kids don't); we'll see what happens. |
It is a lovely sunny and breezy morning in Baton Rouge. We have loaded up on junk food, picked out some movies and tested the generator. All we need to do now is turn over the patio furniture and bring in a few potted plants.
