The discussion was originally directed at the irony of a specific photo. That's only as personal and based on the individual as you perceive it to be. I don't perceive it to be as such but you do. I still get what you're saying eventhough I disagree in this context.

And I understand where you're coming from.

This revelation and reality is okay coming from you, a self-professed Democrat and liberal (I assume). But, when it comes from others, who have not professed their affiliations, it is considered judging.

Life ain't fair--that photo is ironic and poor folks need to try to sell flat screen TVs--if folks don't like that reality, it's okay because life ain't fair. LOL. Amen!

nor do I believe my tone is responsible for some how taking this thread down the road it went, somehow making people say assholish things.
I think your early comment about how people need to remove heads from anuses before they judge is by far the most assholish thing said on the whole thread -- in the attitude sense, not just the literal sense. Lots of people posting comments to the original article have said horrible (often racist) things about poor people, but no one on this thread has done that.

Damn straight, I'm judging, and I don't believe my head is anywhere near my butt. I'm judging everyone who spends beyond their means and expects others to help pay for the consequences. When that happens, I will offer both help and my thoughts about the situation. You can disagree with my thoughts, but telling me to get my head out of my butt is a personal insult. You ought to be able to focus on the substance of the disagreement instead.

We don't know the whole story about this one individual, but we know there are a lot of people out there, rich and poor, making stupid and careless financial choices that end up costing careful people money. (Wall Street, I'm looking at you.) I care about that. It IS my business when it costs me money.

Those of us from whichever party who support both government and charitable support for the needy ought to be concerned about publicity given to people with giant flat screens and XBoxes who can't pay for basic necessities. Why? Because it LOOKS terrible. Photos like this convince people to vote against government aid and withhold charity aid. So what's the story behind the picture? Is this woman typical of those who seek heating subsidies in Macon? Or is she exceptional, and the editors decided to use the picture to send a message to the contrary and undermine the subsidy program? That's what I'm more worried about. My guess, based on my own community work, is that this particular woman may well be irresponsible and wasteful, but that most of the recipients aren't, and thanks to the photo, they will all be tarred with the same brush. That's why I don't think it's a full response to say, "It's none of our business whether people taking government assistance have expensive luxuries in their home!" The response has to consider, knowing that lots of readers DO think that it's their business, why was this photo selected?

I'm sure that's the mentality of people in this situation. Everybody thinks they are middle class and that middle class people deserve a big screen tv and all the amenities. I'm not saying their right, but it's the mentality of Americans. You take the same people bitching about the unemployed and people on welfare and put them in that situation, and they'd do no better. Nobody saves money. We have unprecedented levels of credit card debt. I have a great job, make more than an average salary, but with my debt burden from school, mortgage, car loans, etc, it would take no time for me to burn through my considerable savings. I am just fortunate enough to have the advantage of job security due to an extreme shortage of radiologists in this country. I don't think that gives me the right to be smug and look down on those who aren't are fortunately situated or didn't put away money in savings when they could have. Hindsight, after all is 20/20.

Actually, saying that no one saves is quite a broad statement. I save every month b/c I see what happens when you don't. I have very little debt and what debt I do have I can pay off if I needed to immediately (0% interest credit card). I deal with people everyday that say they have absolutely no way of paying me yet have nicely manicured nails, a coach purse and an iphone. Sometimes after they tell me they will have to sign a promise to pay for services (which less than 1% come back and pay) they need to go get something to eat while"Fluffy" is getting treated-HELLO, you obviously have some money if you are going to dinner. If my dog were ill or I needed to pay for heat I would pawn whatever I needed-many people won't give it a second thought. I see people taking advantage of the system everyday.
BTW my TV is from 1992-works great!

aggieAXO 12-22-2010 02:19 AM

BTW AOII Angel do you work with the general public? or is it mainly through insurance/referral? Just curious.

And I stand by my earlier part of the post, too. You may have a different ideology, but I don't agree with independents who ride the fence. :D (Does a big grin make that feel better?)

So since I don't buy into the mainstream political bull-shit/brainwashing I'm a fence-sitter? Sorry, but I vote for candidates, not political parties ;)

I think you're disagreeing with me just to disagree with me because you think I'm a evil GOP'er who wants to dismantle welfare. I'm not and I don't but as a member of the elite 52% of Americans that pay income taxes I have a right to question and criticize how my money is being spent.

And the wow comment was for the irony of the "life isn't fair" comment (given the article and subsequent posts) and how you criticize me for judging when you've done nothing but judge in this thread.

DrPhil 12-23-2010 09:32 AM

I hope AOII Angel is making a distinction between Independents and "Independents who ride the fence."

Just like I remind myself that all Democrats and Republicans are not brainwashed fools who believe that "choosing a side of the fence" is the solution to complex social issues. Only some Democrats and Republicans are brainwashed fools who blindly vote straight ticket because they think that party alliances substantively mean something beyond politics.

:D (That grin doesn't change the words but, instead of attempting condescension through smiley, it relaxes the tone since I assume none of us are "heated" over this discourse. It certainly isn't the first time we've had this conversation off and on the Internet, right? Such is the life of those who like to discuss REAL topics.)

Oh look, the article:

Actually a TV does have something to do with whether or not someone can afford heating. If someone can afford a $1500 TV then they could have afforded $1500 worth of heat.

It really does not matter if the TV was a gift or not. The TV is an asset. The woman can sell the TV and cancel her $50/month cable and make it through the winter with heat and no TV.

AGDee 12-31-2010 02:45 AM

Again, if any of you would pay $1500 for that TV, you're getting ripped off big time. You can get that size TV for $500 brand new and probably sell it used for $100. Let's see.. heat bill in the winter, per month= $300. So you can sell your TV and cancel your cable and pay for almost half of your heat bill for one month and 1/6th of your heat bill for the other months (with the savings from the cable). Then, when you get back on your feet, you can spend another $500 to buy another TV.

You honestly don't even know that she's at her own house. After all, if she doesn't have heat, would she be staying at her own place?

Sigh. You're right. Everyone who makes claim to need, truly needs, nobody makes bad financial decisions, and nobody should EVER live with the consequences of their decisions.

Is it really that far out there to think she might have never saved anything and had just blown all of her money on stupid trivial shit? That's a lot more believable to me than these suggestions of it not being her house or the TV was given to her by a charity. What charity would give a poor person a huge ass TV instead of clothing or food?

AGDee 12-31-2010 09:33 PM

Nobody is saying that nobody should ever live with the consequences of their decisions. However, a lot of people are making huge assumptions about someone they don't know based on a 3 minute clip on the TV news AND completely ignoring what the story is actually about. The woman is not complaining that she didn't receive assistance because they determined she wasn't in need. She is complaining that the process is that the first 218 people in line get assistance REGARDLESS of anything but when they got in line.

Don't you find that a little nuts? Wouldn't you think that everybody who needed assistance would apply and THEN they'd apply some formula to income/assets, etc. and THEN determine who got assistance based on that? Instead of focusing on that, all anybody cares about is that there is a big screen TV in the background in the news picture. (The article does say that she's in the one warm room in the house so yes, she is at her own house.)

I know too many people who have been out of work for more than a year, who had savings that they have now expended but who paid into these systems and gave to these charities for decades before hitting a rough spot. Most of you who are complaining haven't contributed even a fraction of what some of these people have paid in taxes since before you were born! A large number of people (not just in this board, but in general) are so quick to harshly judge others without having any clue what the circumstances are.

In the words of Harper Lee, via Atticus Finch: If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.

True. I bet the lady camped out for 2 days in front of WalMart to buy the TV and the X-box. She probaby has limited edition sneakers too.

The discussion has jumped around a bit but the bolded was brought up by me. I think it's unfair myself but as AOII Angel said, "Life isn't fair".

I contribute annually to The Heat and Warmth fund here in Detroit (THAW) and if I found out that this was how they were distributing the funds, I would probably reconsider donating to them.
